News
At Robinsons we are excited that books seem to be back in vogue... they appeared to
be the gift of choice this Christmas – and what a great gift they are!
In particular, our Blind Date with a Book initiative was extremely
popular in December – and we congratulate all Golden Ticket winners.
Pictured is Audra, cashing in her $100 winning ticket at our Greensborough store.
In February we welcome Andy Griffiths to our new Highpoint store. If
you have never attended an event with Andy Griffiths – then put this
in your diary – as he is a legend! Andy is a local to the Highpoint area
and he has kindly offered an extended session and will be there for a couple of hours
meeting, greeting, entertaining fans and signing books.
We hope everyone is keeping to their New Years resolutions – if not – you can get back
on track with a motivational book from Robinsons – you can learn a language, quit
smoking, explore mindfulness, go vegan or paleo... there is something at Robinsons to
help everyone achieve their goals. And for now GOOD READING!

USEFUL
Debra Oswald
Sullivan Moss is useless. Once a charming underachiever,
he’s now such a loser that he can’t even commit suicide
properly. Waking up in hospital after falling the wrong way on
a rooftop, he comes to a decision. He shouldn’t waste perfectly good organs just because they’re attached to his head.
After a life of regrets, Sully wants to do one useful thing: he
wants to donate a kidney to a stranger. As he scrambles
over the hurdles to become a donor, Sully almost accidentally forges a new life for himself. Sober and employed, he makes new friends, not least
radio producer Natalie and her son Louis, and begins to patch things up with old
ones, like his ex-best mate Tim. Suddenly, everyone wants a piece of him. But altruism is not as easy as it seems. Just when he thinks he’s got himself together, Sully
discovers that he’s most at risk of falling apart. From the creator of Offspring comes
a smart, moving and wry portrait of one man’s desire to give something of himself.

and Sour and Banana’s in Pyjamas.
Reviews
LAURINDA
Alice Pung
Laurinda is a brilliant coming of age novel by Australian
author Alice Pung. The novel follows the story of Lucy Lam,
who is accepted on an “equal opportunity” scholarship to
the prestigious Melbourne girls academy, Laurinda. For the
first time in her life. Lucy is surrounded by privilege, wealth
and opportunity. However things are not as they seem at
Laurinda. Beneath the immaculate surface lurks an awful truth. The Cabinet, as
they are known, a trio of girls from the wealthiest families quietly run the politics
of the school from behind the scenes. From targeting weaker students, to bullying
teachers, the Cabinet see it as their duty to keep the Laurinda spirit alive, even if it
means hurting others in the process. After the Cabinet take Lucy under their wing,
Lucy has to make some important decisions about who she is and what she stands
for. Superbly written, Laurinda is a passionate novel about identity, diversity and
discovering who you really are.

CHAPTER & VERSE: NEW ORDER,
JOY DIVISION & ME
Bernard Sumner
The steady trickle of books & films covering independent
Manchester music in the ‘70s and ‘80s has begun to crystallise.
In fact, it could fill several plays with the amount of drama,
comedy, tragedy & farce. Bernard Sumner, ¼ of Joy Division
& New Order, throws his two bits on the table & like his playing, his writing is droll
& understated. Especially compelling is his portrait of his family life. From there,
the gut-wrenching kitchen sink drama of Joy Division - which the band outside of
Ian Curtis were almost wilfully oblivious to at the time, collapses into New Order,
and becomes the greatest unintentional reinvention in 20th century music. A series
of happy accidents like ‘Blue Monday’ emerge - the best selling 12” single of all
time, which lost money on each copy sold because of its elaborate packaging.
I’d recommend this book as a worthy companion/counterpoint to Deborah Curtis’
‘Touching from a Distance’ & Peter Hook’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’.

THE DISREPUTABLE HISTORY OF
FRANKIE LANDAU-BANKS
E. Lockhart
When Frankie Landau-Banks is excluded from her boyfriend’s
all-male secret society, she sets out to beat them at their own
game - by coming up with the best pranks ever. A fun and
entertaining read that follows the loveable Frankie on her
journey from mildly geeky girl to criminal mastermind. Ultimately empowering, this
is a wonderful new book from one of the best voices in YA fiction.

HOW TO BE A PARISIAN
Mas, Diwan, De Maigret, & Berest
Oh mon dieu! This book is the epitome of all things French! If
you’ve ever dreamt of settling yourself down into the Parisian
lifestyle of fashion, romance, and certain ‘snobbisms’, then you
simply can’t go past this book. From explanations on why the
‘Parisian pout’ is such an iconic look, to a recipe on how to create
the perfect French Chocolate Fondant; this gorgeously written and
photographed book is one you can flick through at your leisure, most suitably with
a glass of wine or at least some chocolate or cheese. Although some of the ideas
found in this book come across as a little less progressive than I’d like, the majority of
it is filled with romantic ideas, stunning photography, and by the end of it, an overall
feeling of knowledge of what Parisian life is really like. I would recommend this book
for all lovers of Parisian lifestyle and also anyone who enjoyed the picturesque layout
of Alexa Chung’s book ‘IT’. Shannon
GIRL ONLINE
Zoe Sugg (Zoella)
This book is possibly the sweetest Young Adult fiction I’ve ever
had the pleasure to read. For anyone with a love of the online
world, extremely cute settings and characters, and stories of
first love; don’t go past this book. Written by the popular Youtube
personality ‘Zoella’, this is a story that not only describes the
online world with its extreme positive and negative attributes with
incredible accuracy, but also delves into issues such as anxiety, discrimination, and
bullying. With writing that sweeps you up into teenage blogger Penny’s world, this
book is a romantic and lovely story of a shy and reserved person finally finding the
strength to open themselves to adventure, love, and self-confidence.

THE FIRST BAD MAN
Miranda July
Subtle polymath Miranda July returns from the art & film worlds
with her 2nd book, a debut novel. Her first was a collection of
hilarious, strange, sometimes menacing short stories that was
my favourite read of 2007. This book explores themes she’s
explored before – fluidity of gender, power, normality – but, as
always, without any hint of dogma or elitism, which makes her
writing always fresh & her plot twists always surprising. I read this in about 4 hours
without moving an inch. It is absolutely one of those can’t-put-down books. I’d highly
recommend to fans of Lena Dunham, Amy Poehler, Virginia Woolf, Mikhail Bulgakov,
and mainly any adult who likes fiction that pushes the genre forward – onto the ‘sea
of possibilities’.

Among the deadly femme
fatales, ruthless jungle
queens, devious secret
agents, double-dealing

have been overlooked in the annals of history, but,
like their superheroine counterparts in Divas,
Dames & Daredevils, their influence, on popular
culture and the archenemies that thrill us today,
is unmistakable.
