At our recent Principal Conference we listened to some inspirational speakers, one of whom was Michelle
Scott, The Commissioner for Children and Young People. Ms Scott instigated the ‘Thinker in Residence”
program in 2011 whereby an international thinker of repute is employed to challenge our thinking and
awareness of childhood issues. In 2011, Paul Collard, from the UK, was employed and in 2012 Dr Stuart
Shanker, an expert in self- regulation, from Ontario, was selected as the ‘thinker’.
One and a half million is spent on child health in Canada. His topic this year was “How can we, as adults ,
monitor our behaviours, emotions and moods”. This topic was related to the needs of the children in our
society.
Shanker’s thinking forums were filmed and are available on the website.

We really do need to do MORE in the area of supporting our young. With a 30% increase in the birth
growth here in Perth within the last decade we need more agencies to support all aspects of the early
years. We also need to educate people, that young children are not little adults, but developing individuals
across a range of domains; the cognitive and intellectual, the physical, the social emotional, the spiritual
and the creative- just to name a few. Here at our school we aim to provide a range of experiences to
support the development of the whole child.
Bishop Don Sproxton’s Visit- It was an honour, last Friday, to have Bishop Don visit our school. He was
extremely impressed by the performance of the Year One boy and girl choir and the welcome he received
from our students, staff and parents. Bishop Don visited our Year Five and Six students and enjoyed a
conversation with both classes. We were very excited, when Bishop Don mentioned that he would be
delighted to be invited to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation in 2013. Father Joseph and I will ensure
we follow up on the invitation!

Performing Arts Festival- This term, the Catholic Education of WA celebrates the Arts through the
Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival. The festival began with a Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral last
Thursday. I was delighted to attend this special service with Prea Cunningham, MayHa Chau, Elyssa Hunt
and Tiana Gilbert from Year Six. We met our new Archbishop and enjoyed a morning tea with students
and principals from Catholic schools across WA.
Welcome- This week we welcome Emily Charlton to Kindy and Liam Tonev to Year One. We are delighted
to have both families at our school and look forward to them being a part of our great community.

COURAGE
Cross Country- This Friday, our students will compete in the Regional Cross Country at Mawson Park. I wish all our students the best of luck. I
know they are well prepared and will give their personal best and represent our school with pride. Our wonderful P&F will be working hard at the
Sausage Sizzle. Thank you to everyone involved. The money raised will benefit all the children in our wonderful school. I look forward to cheering
the team on and hope to see you there.
Joint Interagency Truancy Reduction Initiative—Beginning this term, all government and non-government schools are working together, with
the State Government and the police, to help reduce truancy from school and increase safety in our communities.
What does this mean for Padbury Catholic Primary School?
The initiative states, that any children located by police, during school hours, outside school grounds, who are unaccompanied by an adult and
do not have a leave pass, will be returned to their enrolled school.
This does not affect children accompanied by their parents who may be attending appointments, such as a doctor or dentist .
If your child is collected by police and returned to school, a staff member from the school will call to inform you and will send a Parental
Information Slip to you. Parents will be given the location where their child was found and the details of the police officer who returned them.
There will be a police contact number for parents if there are any concerns. This initiative will assist schools and police in reducing truancy and
ensuring that all children are safe and adequately cared for. Should you require a leave pass for your child, one can be obtained from the
office.

TERM THREE SCHOOL FEE ACCOUNTS
Term Three School Fee Accounts have been sent home today. This account is the FINAL account for the year,
unless families have a weekly, fortnightly or monthly payment plan in place. We would appreciate ALL fee accounts
to be finalised by the end of Term 3, 28th September. If you have any concerns with regards to your school fees,
please contact Mrs Hutcheson or Mrs Davis.
ART EXHIBITION
This exhibition of children’s artwork, from Kindy to Year Six, will be held in our very own art gallery (the converted
hall).
Just like other gallery openings, the children’s original artwork will be framed, mounted and labelled allowing parents
to browse and view the mini-masterpieces. Our aim is to make this event one of the highlights of the school year and
one in which the children will be happy and proud to participate.

SWIMMING LESSONS
Swimming lessons for all students will commence this term. Students in Years One and Two will commence their
lessons on Monday 20th August. Students in Years Three to Six will commence their lessons on Monday 17th
September.
Notices for Year One and Two went home last week. Please return your signed forms as soon as possible to the
class teachers or Mr Hignett. Remember that:

LAP VOLUNTEERS MEETING
All LAP volunteers are invited to attend a meeting in the Enrichment Room on Tuesday 7th August at 2.15pm.
DAFFODIL DAY—24th August
A note has been given today where orders for daffodils can be made in advance. Daffodils cost $7 per
bunch. Cheques must be made payable to The Cancer Council. 4W will be selling Dougal gardening
bears and volleyballs as well as other Daffodil Day merchandise as soon as it is delivered to the
school. Merchandise will be available from the school office or 4W (room 7) from 8:30am till 3:30pm.

daffodils. Thank you.
WHEELCHAIR FOR KIDS
We have a large wheelie bin situated near Mr DeLuca’s shed for the collection of aluminium cans to raise much
needed funds for Brother Olly Picket and his wonderful team in making special wheelchairs. This is a great cause and
your support is very much appreciated. If at all possible, the bin will hold many more cans if they are squashed down.
Ask your kids to do this, they will love it!
DONATIONS FOR BALI
Madison Hughes (3SL) and Sophie (2S) are going to Bali in September and would love to collect toys for the Kindy
and pre primary schools in Bali. Any donations would be very much appreciated by the children. Please just drop any
donations to the classrooms or contact Laura on 0417998155.

Come and register and join our City to Surf team.

link. It will ask you if you would like to join a team. Do a
search for Padbury Catholic School. There is no password, so all you will need to do is fill in your details and pay the
registration. The cost is $37.00 for adults and $22.00 per student if you are doing the 4km run or walk.
Currently our school team has a total of 25 people. Our team is growing and we need your support to make a
massive Padbury Catholic team.

Regional Cross Country Sausage Sizzle will be held at Mawson Park this Friday, 3rd August. Padbury Catholic are
again hosting a sausage sizzle for the event. The following roster has been made, however if you are able to assist

The National Trust of Australia (WA) invites you to learn more about the life of wartime Prime Minister John Curtin and his
family. One of only three homes of former Australian Prime Ministers open to the public, Curtin Family Home was lived in by
members of the family for over 75 years.

The Reading Hour on the 25th of August
Sharing a book with your child for 10 minutes a day, an hour a week is our aim for The Reading Hour on the 25 August 2012. We know
it’s not always possible for parents to share a book at bedtime with their children, but if you can manage 10 minutes most nights, your
child will have the best chance of becoming a good reader, with all the social and educational benefits that brings. Most of our brain
development happens between birth and three years of age, so it’s not enough to assume that your children will learn to read when they
get to school. Parents need to share stories and rhymes right from day one – and a good way of finding out more is to join story times,
