We recognized our retiring board members, Phyllis Green, Marilee Taylor, Amy Bakken and Shirley Finley. The 2015 slate of board members were elected unanimously, and include new members Rebecca Hannah, Lashelle Evans and Dennis Young. Incumbent Wanda Askelson was elected for another term on the Aase Haugen Senior Services Board, and both Tracy Dostal and Paul Hexom were re-elected to the Aase Haugen Foundation Board. We appreciate the guidance of our Corporate Member Congregation delegates in electing leaders to ensure Aase Haugen’s success! New Maintenance Supervisor In late January, we received the resignation notice of our Maintenance Supervisor of Aase Haugen Homes, Dennis Quam, whose last day was Feb. 6. We are proud to introduce our new Maintenance Supervisor, Jason White, who took the job as of March 30th. Jason has been a part-time employee of Aase Haugen Senior Services for over a year now, working on Floor Care at the Aase Haugen Homes facility in the evenings. Welcome Jason to his new role, we are happy to have him on our team! 2 The Aase Haugen Herald is published quarterly in the interest of its many friends & family by Aase Haugen Senior Services, Inc. 4 Ohio St., Decorah, Iowa 52101. Aase Haugen Senior Services is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, faith-based corporation & Continuing Care Retirement Community. Aase Haugen Senior Services, Inc., under the auspices of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America & governed by the leadership of 23 local corporate congregations, was founded to provide a ministry of Christian service to fulfill the physical, spiritual & social needs of the residents. The entire staff recognizes the value of personal dignity & individual rights as they endeavor to furnish quality care & services based on love & compassion for those residents who must depend on others to care for them. In accordance with Federal Law & the U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of age, race, color, sex, religion, national origin , marital or family status or disability. We are an Equal Opportunity Provider/ Employer. CCDI Unit—a Better Way to Care for Dementia Residents Over the past 100 years, Aase Haugen has always been a leader and innovator of care for seniors. Following in that tradition, the Aase Haugen Board and Staff leadership have been busy planning an expansion of services to the community. Over the past two years, we have been very busy establishing new systems and processes to improve the quality of our services. This has included almost every single department and all major processes. In assessing our changes and our services with all our new processes in place, discussions were held regarding a glaringly obvious gap in our services for residents experiencing dementia symptoms and diseases. Currently, we only have Memory Care Assisted Living, which residents must leave once they fail to meet strict criteria for residence as they progress through the disease process. From cozy Memory Care with 8 tenants, residents then are placed in the nursing facility, where they may have as many as 25 neighbors and many more distractions and bustling activity, which may create a higher level of agitation. We are very fortunate that our Director of Nursing, Brenda Johnson, RN, BSN, has much experience with what is known as a CCDI Unit; Chronic, Confusing Dementing Illness Unit. With her expertise and leadership, and many planning sessions with the Board of Directors, we will be establishing our own CCDI by early this fall. A CCDI unit provides a quiet, secure unit, smaller in size with all activities geared toward the abilities of its residents. All staff who apply to work in the CCDI unit will have hours of specialized training in working with resident with Dementia, so the care provided will be calming, friendly and tailored to each resident. With less stress and more activities CCDI residents can be successful in—a full day of guided activities and interactions—they will get the care and support they need in a calm, relaxed environment. Rivers Neighborhood is the site of the CCDI unit, with 12 rooms for more independent residents and 11 rooms for those more advanced in the disease process. Construction will be starting soon, but will be minimal, so we can have a major impact for our residents for very little capital investment. Many thanks to our forwardthinking leaders who are always looking to provide the best possible care for our residents, even when it’s Winter fun leads to Spring We packed winter so full of fun, that it just zoomed by! At least we hope it felt that way with fast-paced games of Euchre(r): Jenanne Vikre, Pearl Schmitt, Arlene Houlihan, John Reckward and Dale Barth; our Mardi Gras Party (above): Marjorie and Allen Fossey; with doughnut holes, hurricane cocktails, masks and beads, and as host of the Feb. 16th Quilt of Valor event honoring several Decorah residents who are World War II veterans. Among those receiving quilts were Aase Haugen Homes residents and Assisted Living tenants Ernest Corson, Lester Duff, John Malek, Lyle Sacquitne, Don Symonds, Kenneth Nesset, and Richard Dinger. Not pictured are Nels Folkedahl and Keith Crabtree. The Quilts of Valor are made by local groups and private individuals for veterans to honor their service during wartime. 3 AHH Leadership Mission, Vision & Values Board of Directors, Officers President:, Steve Langland Vice-president: Ken Larson Secretary: Wanda Askelson Treasurer: Jim Ulring Members Wanda Askelson, Glenwood Lutheran Joyce Epperly, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Lashelle Evans, Lutheran Church Rebecca Hannah, Glenwood Lutheran Church Steve Langland, Highland Lutheran Ken Larson, Hauge Lutheran Kari Rude, First Lutheran Ron Taylor, United Methodist James Ulring, First Lutheran Dennis Young, Decorah Lutheran Church Our Mission: Aase Haugen Senior Services is an ecumenical adult community providing a continuum of care in a Christian environmentwhich nurtures the body, mind & soul, leading to healing & hope for all we serve. At the original Aase Haugen Home on the farm, ti wasn’t unusual for residents, their families and staff to all sit down together for a meal on a special holiday. Everyone contributed to the feast and shared the wonder of the day together. We certainly captured that same family feeling this year! Many thanks to all the families who brought desserts and more to make the event extra special! Our next major centennial event will be our Golf Tournament on May 18th at Oneota Country Club. Geared to raise funds as much as awareness, this event offers 18 holes of golf, a golf cart for the first 18 teams, a wonderful lunch and many opportunities for prizes and fun! Each hole will have a bit of history on many of the “Hole-in-one” moments that have made Aase Haugen what it is today. Registration is open, so call Rose Beardmore today at (563)382-3603 to register yourself or your team. A day of fun is only $70 per person. Fees include cart, lunch and green fees. If you can’t make it out to the cemetery due to the rough terrain, please join us at the reception for the viewing of the service! Tuesday, June 30th, mark you calendars and be ready to celebrate at the original Aase Haugen Home on South Bear Road. March Theodora Cormontan Concert The March concerts in celebration of Aase Haugen Senior Services’ centennial were a pair of wonderful performances with music that evokes a bright hope and deep sentiment with a trill of the piano or crescendo of the voice. During the concert, Michael and Bonnie Jorgensen not only performed, but shared the adventurous and at times tragic story of Theodora and her sister Eivinda. Theodora was one of few highly educated women before immigrating to America. Through the years she saw grand success as an instructor and composer, then fell on a train landing and was seriously injured, interrupting her bright career. Moving with her family, she saw times of plenty, but was ultimately left with nothing as she and Eivinda entered their sunset years. Through a twist of intertwined fate, the sisters arrived at Aase Haugen Home, where they were cared for and became a part of the Aase Haugen family. Rev. Otto Schmidt’s wife accepted the gift of Theodora’s compositions, and handed them down through the generations of their own family until they arrived at and were brought alive once more by the musically gifted Jorgensens (pictured above.) What a wonderful story to highlight our years of service! 7 Nonprofit Org.
