SAITM holds International Research
Symposium on Engineering Advancements
Continuing in its bold march towards
becoming one of the esteemed higher
educational institutes in Engineering in
the Asian region, South Asian Institute
of Technology and Medicine (SAITM)
faculty of Engineering has concluded a
highly successful Research
Symposium on Engineering
Advancements (SAITM RSEA 2012) recently at SAITM Auditorium,
Malabe. Following its ground breaking historical inaugural Research
symposium (SAITM RSEA 2011) in May last year, this year’s event
signifies the continuation of a very important event to be held annually.
Focused on bringing together the research community in Engineering,
Industries, Academics, Engineering professionals and students into a
forum which would provide unique opportunity for all stakeholders
involved in furthering their knowledge base, not to mention the
invaluable exposure the students as young undergraduates would get.
The event, with presentations covering areas of Electrical, Electronics
and communications, Mechatronics and Automation, water and
Environment, Geotechnical and Soil Mechanics, Computer Science and
ICT, Structural and transportation, Town Planning, urban management,
Technology based education and project Management consisted of
over 40 research papers from Sri Lanka and abroad, all of which were
technically reviewed through a panel consisting of prominent
academics in Engineering. A significant feature is the substantial
number of papers presented by researchers from state universities in
Sri Lanka auguring well for the public – private partnership in
engineering advancements into the future.
The keynote addresses were made by Prof. Matthew Dailey, School of
Engineering and Technology, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT),
Thailand – a prominent scholar and academic in Robotics and by Prof. (
Mrs.) Chintha Jayasinghe, department of Civil Engineering, University of
Moratuwa – a scholar and academic who has been into numerous
research projects in Civil Engineering and who is also the Director,
Postgraduate studies at University of Moratuwa.
The expert panel consisted of three highly acclaimed and well known
academics, Prof. P.B.R. Dissanayake (University of Peradeniya), Prof.
E.M.N. Ekanayake (University of Peradeniya) and Dr. Cyril Kariyawasam
(University of Ruhuna).
An extensive poster presentation was made by the undergraduates of
SAITM to showcase the projects and products they were developing at
the venue running concurrently with the presentation of proceedings. As
an integral part of the programme, a technical tour had been organized
where the participants were taken through a guided tour of the Colombo
Port Expansion Project where the participants were exposed to the latest
development work at South Asia’s premier port courtesy of Sri Lanka
Ports Authority.
Considering the impact the first research symposium had on the
undergraduates of SAITM faculty of Engineering with many embarking
on research projects and participating at local and foreign conferences
and symposiums, the faculty is taking steps to continue the event at an
annual basis which would give a tremendous boost to the students to
strengthen their research capabilities, molding themselves into
complete engineering professionals.
The event is also encouraged to the hilt by AIT, which is the university to
which SAITM faculty of Engineering BSC degree programmes are
affiliated and which is also the degree awarding institute, world famous
for its research activities and post graduate programmes.
SAITM RSEA 2012 was sponsored by Maga Construction Ltd,
Consultant Engineers and Contractors (CEC) Ltd, in the platinum
category, Bank of Ceylon, Nawaloka Constructions in the Gold category.

SAITM Mechatronics Engineering students visit
Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) Workshop
SAITM FoE - Sports Highlights
Outstanding Achievements of Students
S ahan
Rathnayake from batch_3 (2011/2012)
As an integral part of their degree course, Mechatronics students of
Mechatronics Engineering represented Sri Lanka
Badminton Mens Singles, in Universal Peace Games held
in Seoul, Korea in March 2012 and won the Bronze medal.
Batch 2 participated in an industrial visit to Sri Lanka Railways (SLR).
SLR is a government department functioning under the Ministry of
Transport and is the only rail transport organization in the country. The
students were taken through the main repairing bays allowing them to
see the operations of the locomotive and carriage repairing, iron
moulding unit to experience how moulding is done, machine shop to see
the CNC and other types of machines and were given an insight to
quarrying, supply chains and peripheral services which would help them
good stead in linking theoretical knowledge they gain at lectures to
practical use at industry. SAITM appreciates the support received from
Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) for this field visit.
Sahan Rathnayake
Nuwan
Hettiarachchi from batch_2 (2010/2011)
Mechatronics Engineering won a gold medal in the
Badminton Mens Singles event and a bronze medal in the
team event at the UMiSF international badminton
tournament held at University of Moratuwa, representing
SAITM in 2011. Nuwan is currently a national pool player.
