Some of the projects currently being funded include a new fleet of boats for the University’s Sailing Club, the development of student allotments and support for student mentoring. A special disbursement panel made up of donors, staff and students has been set up this year to decide which projects should be funded from the Annual Fund. Here are just a few of the projects that have been supported. ‘‘ I am delighted to be able to support the Excited about Science project. It is rather wonderful to be able both to help to improve the employability of Exeter students and also to encourage the next generation of scientists. The country needs more people with science skills and Exeter is playing a leading role in meeting this need. Under the scheme, pupils from local schools who have no family history of higher education but who show an aptitude for science, visit the School of Biosciences for a series of workshops. e project also provides key employability skills and work experience for undergraduate students interested in teaching and careers in science communication. ‘‘ Action After Stroke is an excellent initiative which not only provides professional development for our undergraduate and postgraduate students, but also provides a valuable contribution to the local community. The financial assistance from alumni and supporters has had a real impact in supporting the project. Dr Gary O'Donovan, Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Medicine (St Luke's) Action After Stroke Student Mentoring Donors are supporting the work of Action After Stroke, a rehabilitation group based at the St Luke’s campus. Volunteers, including students and staff, run sessions for stroke patients twice a week. Funding has been provided to buy new rehabilitation equipment and to allow 20 students to train with the British Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation (BACR). New students at the University’s Cornwall campus are being supported by a donor-funded mentoring project. First-year students will be mentored by a second or third-year student as part of the scheme. e scheme will help new students to settle into University life and provide invaluable employability skills for second and third-year students. University of Exeter cricket scholar Becky Williams says: ‘I think it is a superb opportunity for cricketers in the whole community and students here at the University. It will allow training all the year round.’ Meanwhile, schoolboy cricketer Harrison Folland, 15, a pupil at Blundell’s School, Tiverton, Devon, who plays for the Devon Under 15 team, adds: ‘It is a great new facility for training. It will really help cricketers like myself to improve their game.’ A number of alumni are supporting cricket at the University. Alumnus John Wakely (Economics 1978) is helping to fund a cricket coach. Although he played golf for the University, he played cricket for the Cullompton Cricket Club, as his parents had retired to Devon. He says: ‘I played with the club for several seasons and I recognise how important village cricket is for local communities. As a result, I was very pleased to see that the cricket centre serves not only the University but also the local community.’ Class of 1982 Two Anonymous Donors Mr William Arnold Mrs Patricia Avery (née Miller) n Mrs Rosemary Bates (née Versluys) Mr Malcolm Brown Mrs Ann Bush (née Wilson) Mrs Kim Cappleman (née Horsley) Mr Nicholas Cook Mrs Jennifer Coppin (née Scott) Mrs Kim Day (née Wyatt) Mr Nicholas Fisher Mr Christopher Flint Ms Elaine Fricker Mrs Julia Gaskell (née Malcolm) Mr David Gladwell Mr Mark Herniman n Mr David Holberton n Miss Jayne Hosmer Mr Michael Luckman Dr Robert Mann Ms Elizabeth McClean (née Radley) Mr Mark Northway Mrs Sarah Parfitt (née Shaddick) Miss Emma Price Ms Camilla Ray Mr Mark Rogers n Mr David Royds n Mr Tim Salmon Ms Deborah Setterfield Mr Russell Shearer Mrs Alison Smith (née Jones) Mrs Jane Still (née Jenkins) Mrs Melanie Threadgold (née James) n Mr David Webbe-Wood Class of 1983 Six Anonymous Donors Mrs Catherine Allies (née Sherry) Mr Tim Blaxall Mrs Hazel Bowman (née Ashmore) Mr Timothy Budd Mrs Deborah Castle (née Harris) Dr Roger Cockrell Mr Jeremy Cross Mrs Joanna Cutting (née Onstenk) Miss Clare Davy Mrs Liz Dolby (née Cross) Mr Richard Farr Mrs Linda Genower (née Treves) n Mr Paul Gibson Mr Arthur (d) and Mrs Elizabeth Gilbert (née Harland-Robinson) Mrs Jennifer Grinter (née Bullus) Mr David Hacon Mr Mark Hutchins Mr John Jervoise n Ms Nichola Morgan Mrs Fiona Morrison (née Barron) Mr David Neil Mr Robert Newcome Mr Ray O'Connell Mr Tim Pearson n Mr Mark Perrin Mrs Carey Ramsay (née Duffin) Ms Sophia Ruck (née Buchan) Mr Khalid Sattar Mr Richard Scott Class of 1984 Five Anonymous Donors Mr William and Mrs Katharine Barnes (née Fenn) Mr Malcolm Carradus n Mrs Lucinda Case (née Lee) Miss Fiona Coombe Mr Andrew Duguid Miss Julia Fletcher Mr Frank Gardner Mrs Jessica Gibby (née Bishop) The Sir Christopher Ondaatje Devon Cricket Centre provides world-class training facilities for cricket stars of the future. 11 Legacies make a difference Legacy helps support University Library e academic legacy of Professor Andrew Lang (Physics 1944) is continuing thanks to his bequest to the University of Exeter. Professor Lang sadly passed away on June 30, 2008. As Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Bristol, the academic had a distinguished career and pioneered studies in X-ray diffraction physics. He was an expert on crystal physics and was widely recognised for his development of the technique of X-ray topography. Professor Andrew Lang (Physics 1944) MSc, PhD, FRD 1924–2008 Professor Lang embarked on his academic career after he obtained a First-Class Honours degree in Physics at e University College of the South West of England, the predecessor to the University of Exeter, in 1944. He gained an MSc in 1947, a Cambridge PhD in 1953 and went on to work in industrial research in the UK and in the United States. In 1954 he was appointed as Assistant Professor of Physical Metallurgy at Harvard University and then moved to the University of Bristol to take up a Lectureship in Physics in 1960. Professor Lang spent the rest of his academic career at Bristol. roughout his life he was a strong supporter of many charities, including the University of Exeter. In his will, he made a bequest to support investment in the University Library amounting to £80,000. He said the reason he wanted to support the Library was that one of the most important lessons he learnt at University was how to study alone.
