BOX 5001, CONCORDVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA 19331 (610) 459-8100 • (PA Only) 1-800-441-2064 www.glenmillsschool.org Class of 2015 honored at Educational Awards Ceremony Students representing the Glen Mills Schools Class of 2015 were recognized at the Educational Awards Ceremony on June 25th in front of a large audience consisting of the student body, members of the Board of Managers, special guests, proud family members, and others. Curtis Johnson, the long-time President of the Glen Mills Schools Board of Managers, welcomed the guests and congratulated the award recipients. Jim Chobany, the Director of Education at the Glen Mills Schools, explained the purpose of the ceremony. “We’re gathered here for a special reason, to celebrate our students’ achievements,” Chobany said. Daniel Reyes, the Valedictorian of the Class of 2015 at the Glen Mills Schools, congratu- lated his classmates and wished them well in the future as they pursue their dreams. He also thanked Glen Mills for its support. “Glen Mills has been incredibly beneficial to me,” Reyes explained. “When I first came here, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do but I knew I had a lot of things to work on and that’s where Glen Mills came in.” Reyes will continue his academic career at East Stroudsburg University. During the ceremony, students were lauded for their accomplishments in 29 different areas, including their academic and Career and Technical Education classrooms. Many of those accomplishments, various facets of student life, and special events during the 2014- 2015 school year were captured in a dynamic video that was shown during the ceremony. Students and staff members in the Video Productions program at the Glen Mills Schools produced the segment. As well as recognizing student accomplishments, outstanding staff members were also honored for their contributions to student achievement at the Glen Mills Schools and received various Teacher of the Year awards. Additionally, members of the Bulls For Life Club, a unique alumni group consisting of successful former Glen Mills students, were also at the ceremony to support the Class of 2015. Furthermore, inductees into the Wall of Fame were introduced. Dr. Randy Ireson, the Executive Director of the Glen Mills Schools, closed the ceremony by congratulating the award recipients as they move onto their next challenge. Reyes is a leader on campus and serves his peers by being a well-respected executive. Reyes recorded a 22.5, the highest ACT score on campus this academic year, and has also earned a GED. Career and Technical Education wise, Reyes is a hard-working student in the Masonry program and has acquired a Level 100 and a Level 200 certificate. Reyes was a captain on the powerlifting team. “He was a leader amongst the strongest students on campus,” Chobany said. The Glen Mills golf, basketball, and swimming teams earned league Sportsmanship Awards on May 27th at the Del Val Athletic Association Sportsmanship Luncheon at the Towne House Restaurant in Media. The teams received their awards for demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship throughout their seasons. “Sportsmanship means a lot to us as coaches at Glen Mills and we try to instill those values into our student/athletes,” Glen Mills golf coach and assistant athletic director Steve Natalie said. “These awards really are a reflection of the values all of our coaches teach their teams.” Glen Mills students William Fulkerson (golf), Cole Decatur (golf), Tyrique Lyons (basketball), Nathaniel Pittman (swimming), and David Tingle (swimming) represented their teams while Milton Jones from the Glen Mills track team won the school’s overall Agnes Mag Patterson Award. To exemplify the importance of the award, Chester High baseball coach Mark Bennett told the student/athletes in attendance how he received a sportsmanship award when he was a student/athlete at Chester High School in 1987 and how much it means to him now that his baseball team received the same honor this season. Khaje Andrews High School Diploma Flavjo Latollari High School Diploma Kyree Newton High School Diploma Ervon Schultz High School Diploma Jones and Lathan represent Glen Mills in 39th annual Hero Bowl Glen Mills football players Milton Jones (#70) and Najae Lathan (#62) had an opportunity to play in the Hero Bowl, an all-star game played to benefit the children of fallen firefighters, police officers, and emergency personnel. Glen Mills student/athletes Milton Jones and Najae Lathan represented the Battling Bulls on the West team in the recent 39th annual Hero Bowl at Cardinal O’Hara High School. The game, which features standout senior football players from Delaware County, is played to help the children of firefighters, police officers, and emergency personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Proceeds from the game benefit the Hero Scholarship Fund of Delaware County. Despite being on the wrong side of a 37-6 defeat, Lathan appreciated the fact he was selected to play in the game. “I’m just grateful to have been able to play in a game like this,” Lathan said. “This is obviously for a great cause.” 3 Class of 2015 June 25, 2015 4 Scholarship Tournament Special Thanks! New scholarships to assist Glen Mills students Seuell receives National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Scholarship Dylan Seuell, a proud member of the Glen Mills Schools Class of 2015, is the first recipient of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Scholarship. This scholarship award stems from an award that Glen Mills Athletic Director Pete Forjohn received from the organization in March. The veteran A.D. received the honor in recognition of “meritorious service, leadership, and special contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local and state level.” Seuell was a member of the football, wrestling, and powerlifting teams at the Glen Mills Schools and plans to further his education in welding technology. Lassiter receives Timothy McNeal Memorial Scholarship Glen Mills Schools Class of 2015 member and campus president Kassim Lassiter received the Timothy McNeal Memorial Scholarship at the Educational Awards Ceremony on June 25th. Lassiter plans to attend the Community College of Philadelphia as he continues to move his life in a positive direction. News 13th annual Golf Course at Glen Mills Student Scholarship Invitational supports educational dreams “This was for a wonderful cause,” Chris Cassini said after his round at the award winning Golf Course at Glen Mills on June 1st. “It’s really nice to have the chance to support the students and the school.” Cassini and over 150 other golfers enjoyed a great day on the links and despite the cloudy skies, helped make the future brighter for the Glen Mills Schools Class of 2015. A shining example of how the tournament supports the educational goals of Glen Mills students, Bloomsburg University student and former Battling Bull Tywan Faust was on hand to personally thank the players June 25, 2015 12 and sponsors for their support. Faust, a member of the Glen Mills Class of 2010, will enter his senior year at Bloomsburg University in the fall as he continues to study criminal justice and metaphysics. “My thank you comes from the heart,” Faust told the group of supporters. “I thank my donors for giving me opportunity.” Faust also congratulated and challenged the Class of 2015 as they move into their futures. “As a recipient, I know that these scholarships are not just given to you,” Faust said. “I know you’ve earned them. Don’t make this the last thing you will earn.” Of course, the students are the real winners but there was golf to be played and the team of Doug Proctor, Steve Forgue, Harvey Nauss, and Clint Alexander posted an 11 under par 60 on the Bobby Weed designed layout. Their winning score bettered three groups who shot 61s. Dr. Randy Ireson, the Executive Director of the Glen Mills Schools, personally thanked those that supported the event, which raised thousands of scholarship dollars. “Many of us are blessed but it’s always better to be a blessing to somebody else,” Golf Course at Glen Mills general manager Paul Stuhlmiller said. “And that’s why so many of you return year after year and support our students. This Lincoln Hall student has excelled in the Masonry program and has earned his Level 100, 200, and 300 certificates in the program. Jenny Armitage, who is the President of the club, was recognized at the ceremony. Reyes plans to use the scholarship to help pay for his expenses as he continues his higher education at East Stroudsburg University this fall where he intends to study sports management. “I am thankful for those who are helping me pursue a college degree,” Reyes said. Leggett garners Director’s Lifetime Scholarship June 25, 2015 6 Montell Leggett, who was the Valedictorian in the Glen Mills Schools Class of 2014, received the Director’s Lifetime Scholarship. Jim Chobany, the Director of Education at the Glen Mills Schools, presented Leggett with the award at the Educational Awards Ceremony on June 25th. Leggett, who received the award last year as well, will use his scholarship to help him meet his further education expenses at West Virginia Wesleyan University. Leggett will be entering his sophomore year there this fall. Leggett recently returned to campus during the recent Mother’s Day Celebration and thanked Glen Mills for their continued support. “I owe Glen Mills an awful lot and I am thankful for the support,” Leggett said. Daniel Reyes Class of 2015 Valedictorian Andrews garners Alex Casillas Memorial Scholarship Glen Mills student Khaje Andrews received the Alex Casillas Memorial Scholarship Award at the Educational Awards Ceremony on June 25th. Andrews, a fine all-around student at the Glen Mills Schools, will be a freshman at Lincoln University in the fall. The scholarship is in memory of Casillas, who was an outstanding Glen Mills student who graduated in 1991 and moved on to attend West Chester University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. After graduating from West Chester, he returned to teach at Glen Mills. However, Casillas passed away in a tragic motorcycle accident in May of 2001 but his memory lives on at Glen Mills. “Alex was an inspiration and positive role model to staff and students,” Jim Chobany, the Director of Education at the Glen Mills Schools, said. Class of 2014 Valedictorian Montell Leggett Mattus claims Academic Achievement Award Fillmore Hall student Colton Mattus was recognized at the Educational Awards Ceremony on June 25th for earning the Academic Achievement Award. This hard-working student has earned his GED and has acquired the skills necessary to receive Level 100 and 200 certificates in the Welding program. Khaje Andrews *Information is deemed accurate as of press time. “Turning Dreams Into Reality” News Jennings helping students with their heavy lifting Hayes Hall staff member Ishea Jennings began her career at the Glen Mills Schools as a counselor/teacher in 2013 and has enjoyed working with the student body ever since. "Our students entering Glen Mills have the weight of the world against them,” Jennings said. “I have the great opportu- nity to lift the weight and give them a fighting chance for a better future.” Jennings is helping give those students a fighting chance after the Chester, Pa native graduated from the Christian Academy before attending Geneva College and playing basketball for the Golden Tor- June 25, 2015 11 nadoes. As well as taking care of her duties in the Hayes Hall classroom, Jennings enjoys being an assistant golf coach on the championship Glen Mills team and enjoys photography as well. Students recognized for completing Audubon Society Velazquez earns First program Aid/CPR/AED Student of the Stemming from a grant from These students were recognized the Educational Awards Quarter honors the National Audubon Society and the Glen Mills Schools’ Ceremony on June 25th: partnership with the Chester Ridley Crum Watersheds Association, ten students have earned certificates of completion for participating in the Glen Mills Schools Audubon program. During this 10 week program of study, students learned bird identification and feeding, purple martin banding and house care, and the study of wetlands and rain gardens. Students to take advantage of Glen Mills Scholarship Select members of the Glen Mills Class of 2015 will be utilizing the Glen Mills Scholarship, which was established in 1981, as they continue to pursue higher education. To date, 1,140 students have earned the scholarship. “Through the sacrifice and dedication of the staff at the Glen Mills Schools, this scholarship assists the student in paying for tuition, room and board, and books,” Jim Chobany, the Director of Education at the Glen Mills Schools, said. NBA veteran Wali Jones leads Youth Development/ Positive Peer Leadership workshop As part of the continuing Character and Leadership Development Program, former Philadelphia 76er and Baltimore Bullet Wali Jones conducted a recent Youth Development/Positive Peer Leadership workshop on campus. The program began with a classroom session that focused on positive decision making, goal setting, problem solving, and more. After that, Jones hosted a basketball clinic in the Hayes Hall Recreation Center. After much hard work and effort, 37 Glen Mills students recently fulfilled the requirements to earn their GED and were recognized at the Educational Awards Ceremony on June 25th. Congratulations! ALMA MATER News Wood, Casewell, McCleaft, Cattolico, Plank, Lux, Rose, and Nicholas earn Teacher of the Year awards June 25, 2015 For their outstanding service to the students of the Glen Mills Schools, Edward Wood, Nate Casewell, James McCleaft, Nicholas Cattolico, Duane Plank, Lenny Lux, Steve Rose, and Jermaine Nicholas were recognized at the Educational Awards Ceremony for earning various Teacher of the Year awards. Wood is the Apprentice Program Teacher of the Year. He began his career at Glen Mills in 2003 and keeps the electrical systems maintained on campus. He is also a black belt in karate. Casewell and McCleaft are the A.M. Teachers of the Year. Casewell graduated from Lock Haven University with a degree in criminal justice and started working at the Glen Mills Schools is 2006. Casewell also coaches swimming and was also a soccer coach for the Battling Bulls. In the classroom, Casewell is responsible for academic instruction in all subjects and is involved in many classroom projects. McCleaft, meanwhile, is a Wesley College graduate and was an academic All-American in lacrosse. Before beginning his career at Glen Mills, McCleaft was an English teacher in Poland and coached Team Poland in the 2010 World Lacrosse games. While specializing in history, McCleaft teaches all subjects in Fillmore Hall. He is also a soccer coach for the Battling Bulls. Cattolico is the PM Teacher of the Year. After being a four year lineman for the University of Delaware, the PM Bulls Club Amador receives Johnny Releford Omega Boys Club Scholarship Glen Mills student Loel Amador earned the Johnny Releford Omega Boys Club Scholarship and was recognized at the recent Educational Awards Ceremony. Californian Jack Jaqua has been a long-time supporter of the scholarship, which is given in memory of Johnny Releford, an outstanding former Glen Mills student. Amador recently earned his GED and plans to enroll at Solano College in California to further his education. Congratulations! Advisor earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and has been working at Glen Mills since January of 2014. He is a worthy role model for Glen Mills students. Photography Lab instructor Plank is the Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year. An Antonelli Institute of Art and Photography graduate, Plank is a dedicated Glen Mills veteran and serves as the head tennis coach. He is the longest tenured head coach at the school as he has been leading the program since 1997. Lux is the Alternative Education Teacher of the Year. The Kings College graduate has been helping young men since he started his career at the Glen Mills Schools in May of 2001 and has also coached the bowl- ing and tennis teams. In the classroom, he is responsible for teaching high school students and has coordinated the Lexia Reading Program. The Specialized Teacher of the Year is Steve Rose, a Delaware State University graduate. As an Academic All-American for the Hornets, Rose earned his bachelor’s degree and began his career here in 1990 and currently helps lead the GED program. He has also coached the powerlifting team for 24 years. Jermaine Nicholas is the Community Management Services Teacher of the Year. The IUP graduate played professional football for the Johnstown Riverhawks and helps discharged students continue to move their lives forward. Mayes earns William Glendenning Scholarship Mayes is enrolled at Lackawanna College Glen Mills Class of 2014 member Na-Shawn Mayes received the Dr. William Glendenning Memorial Scholarship at the Educational Awards Ceremony on June 25th. Dr. Glendenning is a former member of the Board of Managers at the Glen Mills Schools. Mayes, a former Tyler 5 student, will be entering his sophomore year at Lackawanna College this fall. Smith receives R.I. Richardson Foundation Scholarship Koliso and Coates also continue to receive support from the Foundation. Quinzell Smith 7 “The R.I. Richardson Foundation has been dedicated to providing educational and workforce development opportunities to disadvantaged young men for the past 54 years,” Jim Chobany, the Director of Education at the Glen Mills Schools, said at the recent Educatinal Awards Ceremony. “The Foundation’s Scholarship program provides assistance to young men who display leadership skills, a commitment to community service, and a desire to go to college or gain technical training.” Chobany thanked the Foundation’s Executive Director Mike Sunday for the generous contribution to our students’ futures. Quinzell Smith, who plans to enroll at the Community College of Philadelphia, is this year’s recipient of the $1,000 scholarship. Meanwhile, former Glen Mills students Dontae Coates (Philadelphia Technician Training Institute) and Mahdi Koliso (St. Cloud State University will use the scholarship as they continue their academic careers. News Reyes, Koliso, and Faust receive Student Endowment Fund scholarships Class of 2015 Valedictorian Daniel Reyes is the latest Glen Mills student to benefit from the Student Endowment Scholarship. Additionally, former Glen Mills students Mahdi Koliso and Tywan Faust are continuing their educations with the assistance of the Student Endowment Fund Scholarship. Koliso is entering his senior year of study at St. Cloud June 25, 2015 State University in Minnesota while Faust is furthering his education at Bloomsburg University. He is entering his senior year at Bloomsburg and also returned to Glen Mills to thank the supporters of the annual Golf Course at Glen Mills Student Scholarship Invitational. 8 Maleapi receives Paul W. Morgan, MD, and Jane Vensel Scholarship Daniel Reyes Former Glen Mills student Joshua Maleapi received the Paul W. Morgan, MD, and Jane Vensel Scholarship at the recent Educational Awards Ceremony. He is entering his sophomore year at Sierra College in Rocklin, California. Cheyney University student Reed receives Earl Downing Memorial Scholarship Former Glen Mills student Darrell Reed is this year’s recipient of the Earl Downing Memorial Scholarship. He was recognized at the Educational Awards Ceremony on June 25th. He will be entering his sophomore year at Cheyney University. Petit-Frere claims James M. Hunke Memorial Scholarship Beloved Petit-Frere, a fine all-around student at the Glen Mills Schools, received the James M. Hunke Memorial Scholarship at the Educational Awards Ceremony of June 26th. This scholarship is one of the Director’s Lifetime Scholarships that contributes $1,000 towards a student’s pursuit of higher education. This former Van Buren Hall student will be entering his sophomore year at Lincoln Technical Institute. News Banks, Dean, Love, Gardner, Mellen, and Blanchard earn Bulls For Life Club Wall of Fame recognition Proud former Glen Mills students and Bulls For Life Club members Ken Banks, Killraine Dean, Dalton Love, Lloyd Gardner, Bill Mellen, and Charles Blanchard were honored for earning Wall of Fame status at the recent Educational Awards Ceremony. The Bulls For Life Club is comprised of former students who have pursued a positive lifestyle and achieved success after leaving Glen Mills. They serve as positive role models for current Glen Mills students. Banks was a Glen Mills student from 1979-1981 and captained the football, basketball, and track teams while being a positive leader on campus. Banks was the first Glen Mills June 25, 2015 student to attend college and returned to campus to begin his career. He served as a supervisor at Glen Mills for 20 years and was also the head football coach from 1992-2002. Dean was a unit executive and has taken his leadership skills and positive outlook to his wealth management and banking career. The West Chester University graduate is a frequent contributor to campus events and played on the 1991 Glen Mills football team. Love, meanwhile, was a Glen Mills student from 19901992 and was the Bulls Club President while playing on the football, basketball, and baseball teams. An active member of the Bulls For Life Club, Love’s professional employment has included Glen Mills, the Greyhound bus company, and the American Cancer Treatment Center. Gardner, a former campus executive, was on the Glen Mills track and field and powerlifting teams before serving in the Marine Corps for 12 years. He is currently employed with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and is an active member of the Bulls For Life Club. Mellen was a member of the Bulls Club while he was a student here and was the MVP of the Del Val championship baseball team. Blanchard, meanwhile, is a proud former Glen Mills student and has really taken to his role as a positive role model for our students. He is an entrepreneur and is involved in many fields of business, including bail bonds, real estate, and barbershops and salons. He also has donated money to support the Glen Mills Scholarship. “We celebrate their successes and hope that our current students will follow in their footsteps to a positive future,” Director of Education Jim Chobany said. Right: Wall of Fame member Ken Banks Concordville Chadds Ford Rotary Scholarship goes to Berry Hayes Hall student Olen Berry picked up the $750 Strive Scholarship from the Concordville Chadds Ford Rotary Club. Berry is in the Building Trades and Automotive Technology programs at the Glen Mills Schools and has earned the reputation of being a hard worker. This attribute will certainly serve him well as he continues his eduction at WYO Tech. “I’m looking foward to furthering my education and this scholarship will certainly help in many ways,” Berry said, “Turning Dreams Into Reality” Dr. Randy Ireson, the Executive Director of the Glen Mills Schools, presents head varsity basketball coach Tony Bacon with the Glen Mills Coach of the Year Award. Bacon guided the Battling Bulls to a state playoff appearance and taught life lessons along the way. 9 Dr. Ireson congratulates Dylan Seuell for earning the Student/Athlete Award at the recent Springs Sports Ceremony. Seuell is an accomplished welding student and was also a standout on the Glen Mills powerlifting team.
