FALL ISSUE 2012 My Three Things by Colin Kenneally Here are some absolutely cools things that you would not see in a normal person’s bag of important items. So, now, let’s get started with my first item. The first item in my bag is my baseball. This ball is important to me because I love baseball. Seventy-‐four major ball players signed this ball and they’re very good. These players are from Cotuit, Cape Cod. Cotuit is one of my favorite places to go! My nana has a house there, so I can go to all the games because they play in Cotuit, Cape Cod. My second item is my picture of my family with a bottle-‐ nosed dolphin. This picture was taken when we were in Atlantis, Bahamas. It was taken when I was nine. The dolphin’s name was Cacique. She could do flips, 360s, and punt a football. I liked the dolphin. She was genuinely nice. I wish I had a pet dolphin! My third item is my gator head. It is from Gatorland, Florida. This gator head is important to me because I love reptiles! This gator head belongs to an American alligator. In Florida, we got to see many gators, about 1,000. I liked going to the tops of lookout towers to look for gators. And those are my three favorite things. Hopefully you will be able to collect these items in your lifetime! Bears, Bears, Bears by Allie Murphy Bears, Bears, Bears Big Bears Small Bears Skinny, Hungry, Angry Bears Calm, Heavy, Light Bears Those are just a few. Climbing Bears Sleeping Bears Standing, Playing, Powerful Bears Smart, Curious, Funny Bears Chubby Bears Skinny Bears Happy Bears And don’t forget Scratching Bears Last of all Best of all I like Baby Bears! HAUNTED HOUSE FOR SALE by Amanda Rubin Happy Halloween! If you buy my house, you will never feel alone! It is a nice house but it is cold, misty, and dark. The house has ten flights of stairs. It is filled with cobwebs and dust. It sometimes says, “Boo! Eeek! Ha! Ha! Ha!” You don’t want to be worried to get to sleep. If you love Halloween, this is the house for you. This is how much it is: four thousand dollars and one cent! This house is not that scary. It is to die for! This is what it looks like on the inside. It has ten bedrooms, ten bathrooms, five kitchens and thirty closets. On the outside, it is purple, green, orange, blue, yellow, pink, and black. Trees and grass are painted on it. I hope you’d like to buy my house. You get a lot of privacy because it is far in the woods and no one can see you. Have a spooky Halloween! 1 Bears, Bears, Bears by Derek Bennett Bears, Bears, Bears, Grizzly Bears Polar Bears Eating, giant, clawing bears Sprinting, walking, swimming bears Those are just a few Teddy bears Sleeping bears Itchy, climbing, hunting bears Black, Brown, Albino bears Energized bears Hungry bears Smart bears And don’t forget baby bears Last of all Best of all I like hibernating bears! HAUNTED HOUSE FOR SALE by Andrew Aylmer Would you like to buy my spirited house in the woods? You’ll have fun going to sleep if you survive! You will like it if you like horrifying things. Don’t open the closet door on the tenth floor on the right. There is free electricity. Just ask politely… if you dare! Get ready for a scare! There are zombies, ghosts, mummies, and werewolves. Red is a favorite color throughout the house. There is a vampire in the bathroom on the third floor. There are pirates that come out at midnight. There are spiders that will make your eyeballs pop out! All of the armor in the basement comes to life on November fifteenth every year. You might want to lock the basement door. It thunders every night. But you can hardly call it haunted. HAUNTED HOUSE FOR SALE by Maya Gearin-‐Viga Are you looking for a new, spirited mansion? Well, I’ve got the house for you! It’s in Duxbury, MA, 02332. My house is so cozy you’ll never feel alone! The furnishings are to die for! Red is a very popular color in this house. If you love Halloween, then this is the house for you! The backyard is huge and has enough stone to make a pool! This house has ten flights of stairs, perfect for big families and sleepovers. This house is four thousand twenty-‐five dollars and twenty cents. The beds are so glorious, they’re terrifying. There are twenty rooms, ten floors, and a flat screen T.V. Did I tell you that Taylor Swift used to live here? She loved it so much that she left some of her things here. I am not lying at all. So, now, do you want to buy it? If so, call me now. 2 My Three Things by Lauryn Burnes There are such great, awesome, amazing things in my life and it was so very hard to only choose three to tell you about. In the end, I narrowed it down to three things….well, what am I waiting for, here they are! The first thing is my stuffed cat, Prayline. She is soft and fluffy like a cloud. Prayline is striped with two colors. One is black, like when you are in a dark cave with no lights. The other color is grey, like clouds on a rainy day. She has a bendy tail and a purple collar that says Prayline. It looks just like the font I used. Prayline’s nose is like a rose. She is soooooo cute! Can you imagine her? I brought her to show you how much I love, love, love, love cats. I have had two cats in my life. One named Haley (pronounced hail-‐ey) and one named Lizzy. Lizzy is a tiger cat and Haley is a black cat. We rescued Haley as a kitten. He was wild and it was the coldest winter ever and there he was, with his mom and brother. Haley and his brother were the only two of the litter who survived the harsh weather. My mom caught them and gave his brother and mom to her friend. She kept Haley for us. Haley was very shy and always hid. He was a cute kitten though, a tiny, black, fluff ball. Soon, Haley got used to us and then we decided to get another cat from a shelter. That cat was Lizzy. She got used to us much faster. They are both dead now, but I still love them and miss them. That was my first thing, two more to go. Don’t worry though, they won’t be this long! My second thing is a ROCK! Now you might say, “What’s so special about a rock?” Well, many things are special about this particular rock. It is from the best place in the world, Fenwick Island in Delaware. Most people ask, “Where in the world is that?” I always answer, “Why, it’s a perfect island off Delaware.” My family owns a beach house there. When you are there it seems like all your worries melt away, and are replaced by a lullaby of the huge waves and the feel of the soothing, almost rockless sand. It’s heaven! My rough rock has Fenwick Island written on its beige surface. Fenwick Island is the best place in the world, you should go soon! Okay, this is a lot longer than expected, but hey only one more thing to go. My last, but not least, is my beautiful dance necklace. It has two bright silver beads, two lilac, purple beads and one big bead in the middle that has two pink point shoes. My necklace is gorgeous! My friend gave it to me for my birthday. I brought it to show you that I love to dance. Well, there you have it, my favorite activity, place, and animal. I have enjoyed telling you my three things, but now the big question is, what are your three things? Three Things about Me by Dominic King It was a little difficult to find three of my favorite things. I chose my quad, my car, and my family. My quad is small. However, it is quick. I did not say it was fast or reliable but you can get away quickly. I have been riding with my dad since I was two. This was my first quad and it has a lot of stickers. I have been in a lot of accidents, but my quad is still in good shape. The second thing in my bag is my car. Well, I like cars … real cars, and I like to help my dad fix cars. The car that I brought in is a limo. It is made out of wood and is painted black. I made it for Cub Scouts and my father helped me with carving it. I made this car to race for a Cub Scout event. The last thing in my bag is a picture of my family. The picture shows my family at a camping trip. In the picture, is my father, Jay, my mother ,Victoria, my Aunt Sam (short for Samantha), my sister, Isabel, my pet dog, Chewy, my cousins, Colin, Scotty, Jackie, Kenzie, and me. They are all tall or will be tall, I think, because most of the people in my family are tall. My grandfather, whom I call Papa, was at the camp, but is not in the picture. They are all very nice. Well, that is it, bye! My Three Things by Harry Papp Hi, I’m Harry Papp and these are my three things! First things first, I’m going to talk about my dirt bike glove. I have a Honda CRF 70. It is basically a smaller dirt bike, but it’s fuel powered. My family and I always go dirt biking across the street from Keene Street Field. I love dirt biking! 3 My second thing is my stuffed tuna. The yellow-‐fin tuna is one of my favorite fish of the ocean. I love fishing. We go almost every weekend. I love catching bluefish. I think they are the most fun and exciting to catch. My third, and last, thing is my Wolf Scout handkerchief. I got it in my second year of scouting. Now, I’m in my fourth year and I’m a Weebleow One. I love helping everyone. Well, I guess that’s it! Bye. I’m Harry Papp and those are…My Three Things. See yah! Autumn by Charles Schomp I see the different red, orange, and brown colored leaves. I see a giant leaf pile. I see the sun setting earlier and the days getting shorter. I see jack-‐o-‐lanterns glowing at peoples' houses. I hear the leaves crackling under my feet. I hear the yells from people jumping in leaf piles. I hear the kids yelling trick-‐or-‐treat. I hear the roar of the crowd at the football game. I feel a rake in my hand. I feel the cold air on my face. I feel a pumpkin-‐carving tool in my hand. I feel the slimy pumpkin guts. I taste the divine, sweet apple cider. I taste the hot turkey on my plate. I taste the sugary candy in my Halloween bag. I taste the warm bread rolls at Thanksgiving. I smell turkey roasting in the oven. I smell the fresh cut grass. I smell the decaying leaves. I smell the smoky fire. Fall by Molly Duvall Fall is full of sports and activities. On the soccer field, I see the sweat dripping down the hard, fast, hot, red-‐ faced players. I hear tons of fans cheering for my team. I smell the hot chocolate that the parents are slurping in the cold stands. I feel the cold breeze hitting my face as I save a shot. Football is exciting to watch. At football games, I hear the big crowd screaming and cheering for Duxbury. I see the big, strong football players' faces covered with eye black. I feel the freezing cold bleachers vibrating because of the fans' stomping. Halloween is a fun activity in fall. I smell the jack-‐o-‐lanterns getting carved and it makes me hungry for pumpkin pie. On Halloween, I see spooky ghosts and scary costumes and yummy candy. 4 The Day I Went to Disney World by Miles Sampson The day I went to Disney World was my best day ever! It was a whole week. Our vacation was during April vacation, 2012. It was in Orlando, Florida. I went with my family. It started out on a plane. When we landed, we took Disney’s Magical Express to our hotel. For the afternoon/evening/night, we stayed at the hotel. The next day, we went to the park. The park was the Magic Kingdom. The first ride I went on was Splash Mountain. Then I did some more rides, like Space Mountain and pretty much everything! We went to the other parks, too. The Disney parks were called Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT. My top five rides are: #5) Splash Mountain. I like it because you go around, and it’s nice and peaceful, but then there’re signs that say “Keep out” and “Go back”. You start going up and up. Then you drop down and make a big splash. #4) Tower of Terror. I like it because it’s the Twilight Zone and you are in an elevator and it says Tower of Terror and you start falling. #3) Expedition Everest. I like it because you go backwards and you see a yeti. Then the track turns and you do a huge drop. #2) Space Mountain. I like it because it really looks like you’re in space and it’s shaky. The drops are fun, too. #1) Rock n’ Roller Coaster. I like it because it’s in the dark. You go upside down three times and in 2.8 seconds you go 60 MPH. After we went to all four parks for seven days, we left and went on the plane. Finally, we were home. We had not been home for seven days. We still missed Disney, though! When I Split My Head by Liam McGrail My worst day was when I was going to a friend’s birthday and I was getting changed. While Mom was tickling me, I lost my balance. I fell down on the sharp, wood part of my bed. I hit the back of my head and I was crying and looking for blood. I had to go to the hospital. I had to drive for a while and go to the emergency room. I wasn’t crying anymore, but it hurt badly when I had to get three stitches. Then when they were done, I got a sticker. When I got my stitches out, it wasn’t bad and didn’t hurt at all. That was a bad time, and I don’t know if it will happen again. The Best Day Ever by Elizabeth Delia It was a beautiful day. It was my birthday, and I was excited because I was going to the American Girl doll store! When I got in the car with my sisters, Sophia and Francesca, and my mom, we got Skittles. I also took my American Girl doll and my iPod. It was a long car ride, but when we got there, I was excited because we could go in the store. When we were walking in the store, my mom asked me what outfits I wanted. I said to wait until we got in the store. When we got in the store, I decided I wanted a doll, and so we went upstairs to look at them while my mom made an appointment for my other doll’s hair at the hair salon. She went to the salon to do it. I wanted the spider. It was cool and they showed me how to do the hairdo. When it was time for lunch, the waiter gave me a seat for my American Girl doll. He also told us we could have a smoothie that tasted like cake. I got mac n’cheese. It was not so terrific. There was not enough cheese. After we were done, we went downstairs. I saw the doll I wanted. She had black hair and brown eyes. I said I wanted her, so we asked the lady what number she was. She said, “Number forty,” so we went upstairs and got her out of the case. When we bought her, my mom said, “Keep her in the box.” On the way home, I said, “What should I name her?” My mom said, “September,” and I loved it! And that was her name. I had the best day ever! My Best Day Ever! by Mikaela Carpenter It was on October 22, 2010. It was at Shrikes, Fashion for Girls. It’s in Connecticut. My mom, sister, and friends were there. Here are the names of some of my friends: Annika, Lilly, Kristin, Colleen, Ali, Ciara, Gouri, Kathleen, Sophie, and Caroline. After everyone got there, we got our nails and hair done. 5 We got our nails painted zebra and polka dot. The hairstyles were wavy, curly, and cool ways of pigtails. After that, we went on a really fun Mickey Mouse ride. It was red and went around in circles. Then we got make-‐up done. What they did was blush, mascara, and eye shadow. Then we had cake. It was a chocolate cupcake cake with butterfly rings on top. Next, we put on fancy clothes and put on a fashion show. The clothes were dresses with ribbons and lace. We took a group picture. Last and finally, we passed out goodie bags, balloons, pictures of the fashion show, and regular pictures that they took. In the goodie bags, were choker necklaces, friendship bracelets, and a few pieces of candy like a Jolly Rancher, a lollipop, 3 Musketeers, and Snickers. On the chokers were butterflies. They said, “Dream, Peace and Love”. They were cool. After everyone left, we cleaned up the extra goodie bags and cake, plates, spoons, and all utensils. Then I opened presents. A few things I got were Legos, an art set, and a new book. I got lots more! It was my best day ever. Haunted House for Sale by Lauren Burton This is my spirited house. It’s at the end of Scare Lane where the grass never grows and the birds never sing, except for the eerie caws of the crows. That’s where my house is. It’s quite a lovely house that won’t let you get bored at all, because of all the activity going on. Your neighbors are quite friendly, but they barely go near the house because the house is very old and (not to scare you) sometimes they see mist coming out of the cracked windows. First thing when you walk in the house, your eyes might play tricks on you, like you might see things move when you wake up early in the morning. I’m not so sure, but you might hear spooky things at night. If you have a dog and if the dog barks, you go downstairs, and then you look around and you don’t see anything inside or outside. Well, that’s normal. If you have complaints about the house, I think you should sell it like I did, because I’m getting tired of all the spirits. That’s really all the terrifying things about my house, but you get used to it. One time a day, somebody will come into the living room and ask if you want anything to eat or drink. This mansion is a little misty, but it is really spooktacular. You should buy this super amazing, gigantic, big, nice, cool, cold, great, lively, spirited house! You will never have sad moments! Haunted House for Sale by Addison Thawley This is a house I am looking forward to selling. It may be dusty and need some cleaning. You will have a free cat. Don’t be scared if you hear any creaking. It’s probably your parents. The front door needs a pencil to open. There is always a guardian at the door. There’s an owl that lives in the woods. He keeps the mice away. You will have good dreams! You will never feel alone or be scared. On Halloween, it’s ready for you. I’ll let you in on a little secret – the house is free and has really comfortable furniture. The house is a mansion. There is an airplane in the yard and it works! Your house is near the woods. The address is 245 East Street. The phone number is 783-‐9012. The house is across the street from a farm. Happy moving! The Pick of the Patch by Charlotte Mallegol I am a pumpkin in a pumpkin patch. I so desperately want to become a Jack-‐O-‐Lantern this Halloween. I am a lovely sunset orange color. I have a long stem that makes me easy to pick up. I am nice and round, so I am just perfect for carving. I have absolutely no bruises, so I can be carved very easily, and you will not break your knife carving me! I have a flat bottom so, when you put me outside, I won’t get blown over by wind or rain! I am extremely smooth and shiny, so I will glow the brightest! I think I would look amazing with a scary face since I am great at protecting houses from ghouls and monsters! I will scare them silly! I can growl, groan, and scream until every last one of them is gone! I can also glow as bright as the sun! Your house will be the brightest on the street! I also last an incredibly long time! I won’t rot for weeks on end! You would be wrong to not pick me this Halloween. I am a very brave pumpkin. I will glow through the toughest of storms! I am also very good for a laugh! I will roll around and make silly faces until you are laughing your pants off! I love amazing people with my beauty and brilliant sunset orange skin! I am an eager and willing pumpkin who deserves more than a dreary old pumpkin patch! 7 If you want a pumpkin with superb taste and crunchy seeds, then I am the pumpkin for you. My seeds are perfectly salty and crunchy, so they will be ideal for making pumpkin seeds. Also, if you want a pumpkin just right for pumpkin pie, then look no further. I have creamy and delicious insides that will make your heart skip a beat with the first bite. As you can see, I am the best pumpkin you can get this Halloween. The Pick of the Patch by Serena Jones I am an ambitious pumpkin. Last year, I sat in this ancient pumpkin patch and watched all my friends being taken away and becoming scary jack-‐o-‐lanterns for Halloween. But that is all going to change this year! Who could resist me? Let me tell you about my appearance. I am a brilliant shade of spray tan orange and your friends will be marveling at my beauty. I have very few, to no, bumps on my body, and I will surely be the most dazzling pumpkin in your whole neighborhood. I am broad and wide, but still perfect for a jack-‐o-‐lantern. I would be perfect, if you need a scary jack-‐ o-‐ lantern. You will be in awe of my magnificent talents. I have an exquisite and radiant voice. That is not all. I am also a graceful and elegant dancer. Another one of my magnificent talents is, if you carve me the right way, I can be as scary as Freddie Cougar. If you don’t want a scary pumpkin, then pass me by and have a disastrous Halloween. My best talent is I am extremely clever. This is helpful because, if you need help with your homework, I am the pumpkin to call. I have quite a transparent personality. I am corky, which is very entertaining to be around. Do you like an outgoing pumpkin? Well, pick me for sure because all the other pumpkins are as dull as the sky on a stormy day. I, on the other hand, am as outgoing as they come. I can also be scary because I know just when to jump out and scare people out of their wits. I can also be very strange, but you know what they say, “Weird is good.” Right? Now, I will tell you about my mouth-‐watering, delectable, savory taste. I have the perfect amount of sweet taste, so your teeth will not rot. You won’t get that kind of taste with any store-‐bought pumpkin. While you are eating me, make sure to keep some napkins close by because I am juicy! Once the Halloween spirit has dried away, you can bake me into a warm, home-‐baked, delicious pumpkin pie! Well, in conclusion, you’ll have a great, long lasting Halloween if you pick me. Come on, you can’t pass up this opportunity! The Important Thing… by Jack Cosgrove The important thing about Jack is that he is good at video games. He likes to read books. He likes Legos. He helps his dad. But the important thing about Jack is that he is good at video games! The Important Thing… by Colin O’Neil The important thing about Colin is that he’s good at baseball. He likes to swim. He loves animals. He loves basketball. But the important thing about Colin is that he is good at baseball. 8 A Place I Went… by Emmett Griffin This summer was one of the best summers ever because I went to sleep-‐away camp for two weeks! At camp, I loved the waterfront where you can go canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, platoon jumping, swimming, fishing, and go on the water trampoline. I felt excited and nervous every day. At camp, I could feel the fresh, tender breeze. The food was awesome. For breakfast, they had pancakes, waffles, bacon, eggs, cereal, scones, bagels, bread, and much more! At night when I was in bed, I could hear the loud tree frogs. That was my camp. A Place I went… by Berit Cederland This summer could not have been better because I went to Cape Cod. As I got into the car, I felt hot and sticky and I was worried about the long car ride. When we finally got to Cape Cod, we got out of the car and checked into the motel. Next we put on our bathing suits and headed to the bay. I was so excited because this is where my dad was coming into for his 38-‐mile paddle-‐boarding race. My friends and I played in the water until we saw our dads getting closer to shore. After about a half an hour, our dads came in. We all headed to a big party. Everyone had a great time. The Pick of the Patch by Charlotte Roest I have grown inside this pumpkin patch, and I’m the symbol of Halloween with my oval-‐shaped body. My curvy bumps are attractive. I sit on the porch all day long, and all night sometimes, without moving. I’m not the perfect shape but I am still great for Halloween! I am a very fast roller because of my shape. I am very easy to carve. I am very good at looking scary with my evil grin. Candles inside me make me glow on Halloween night. I love to scare kids all night long. I am very excited on Halloween night to scare people with my evil grin. During the day, I am friendly to people with my orange smile on my happy face. On Halloween night, I love to watch all the trick-‐or-‐treaters in their funny costumes. After Halloween, I could be pumpkin pie with your Christmas dinner, or I could be pumpkin muffins. Be sure to remove and toast my pumpkin seeds. They are very tasty. Please pick me and take me home! The Pick of the Patch by Tony Coppola Hi, I’m Joe the pumpkin. I am a blue pumpkin. I am as solid as a rock and really beautiful. I am a light pumpkin, although I am solid. I am the lightest and the biggest pumpkin in the patch. I have a very sturdy stem and I can tower over every pumpkin in the patch. I am the best looking pumpkin on the EARTH! I am really talented. I can be stable. I can scare people on Halloween night without falling over! I glow in the dark so you will not need candles. I tower over all the other pumpkins so you can brag. You can eat me after Halloween. You would be able to make enough pumpkin bread for all of your friends! I am a really peppy pumpkin. I am friendly but I can scare someone easily. I am sturdy so you do not have to worry about my being kicked over Halloween night. I am really creepy, so be aware that some people may run away. I can also be super silly. 9 When you carve me, you will discover that my seeds are giant and tasty. I do not need to be salted because I am already salted. I am the best pumpkin, if you want to make pumpkin bread. I am delicious baked because I am so fresh. I hope you pick the best pumpkin – ME! The Painter by Matthew Festa Chapter One There was a painter named Gus. On Monday, he was painting a picture of a magic land and the wind started. Then Gus got sucked in. Gus was asleep for two hours. Then Gus finally woke up. Chapter Two-‐ “Jack and Dan the Wolves” When Gus was awake, he went fishing. That night, he ate the fish he caught. Then two wolves came. They weren't ordinary wolves, but they were nice wolves so they came up to Gus and said hi. They told him where all of the best food was. So Gus went with them. Chapter Three-‐ “Evan the Hawk” On their journey, the wolves told Gus about Evan the Hawk. As they were walking, they found Evan the Hawk and he flew with them. When they got there, they picked some apples and pears-‐ also tomatoes. Chapter Four-‐ “Maddie the Elephant” When they were about to leave, they saw an elephant. Gus asked the elephant if they could have a ride, and the elephant said yes. Chapter Five-‐ “Alex the Monkey” As they were riding, they met Alex the Monkey. Alex had lots of bananas, so Gus asked Alex if he could have some. Alex said yes. Chapter Six-‐ “Sophie the Bunny” After Gus got the bananas, he met a bunny with water. He asked the bunny where she got the water and the bunny told him. Then they got the water and left. Chapter Seven-‐ “Grace the Parrot” When they were halfway back, they met a parrot. The parrot was in a tree with coconuts and he gave them some. Finally, they got home and ate the bananas and coconuts. They drank the water. Chapter Eight-‐ “The Pony” When it got cold, a pony came and took him to a portal where he met a lizard which he took home. Chapter Nine-‐ “Home” When Gus got home, he put the lizard in a cage. That day was the craziest day for Gus. The End 10 The Stone War by Ian Trefrey Once there was an ancient, stone army. The leader was made out of an indestructible stone. He was a statue and his army, too. Then someone put ancient stone liquid on the leader and it made him and his army come back to life. The leader was about one hundred feet tall and the army members were about five feet tall. Everyone in Raze City was scared of the stone army. Everyone ran as fast as they could to the landing ship. They got on it, flew away from Raze City, and went to Florum City. A week later, the stone army came with their leader, the Stone Warrior. They went to the tallest building in Florum City. One person saw a hat which looked like a black hat with white twigs. He threw it on the ground and an evil spirit got it. The evil spirit knew what it was for, which was to control the stone army. The evil spirit’s name was Overlord. Overlord was unseeable with the hat, and the hat was unseeable, too. The army was pushed off the tallest building in Florum. The army died and was never seen again, but Overlord is making another army. To Be Continued. Dancing by Kelly Burke I love to dance all ‘round the room. I am always in tune. When dancing, I love spinning. When dancing, there’s no winning. Leaping, always moving and grooving. I feel like a butterfly flying through the air. I can dance anywhere. Standing on the points of my feet, Dancing to the beat. I’ve been a dancer all my life. I will always be a dancer. The Win by Matty Maguire We’re losing by two. The crowd is yelling boo. We take it up court, As we make the pass short. I move around one. It is so much fun. I take the shot. It is like putting a carrot into a pot. It goes in. We win. The crowd yells yeah, As we say hooray! 11 Skiing by Brooke Chandler Hey, they call me BC And I can ski, ski, ski. And I can race Upon your face. Hey, you can ski. Fall by Argent Lojko Fall is one of my favorite seasons. In fall, you can listen to the cool Halloween sounds and see leaves fall from the sky. You can eat pumpkin seeds and pumpkin pie. You can smell the pumpkins, and you can feel the leaves. That’s why I love fall. Fall by Nolan Roche Fall is a very fantastic season. When I play football in the fall, I can feel when the player tackles me. Sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesn’t. In the fall, I taste and smell the delicious turkey on my Thanksgiving plate. I can see the leaves fall down from the trees. Last but not least, I can hear the wonderful birds say, “Tweep, tweep.” I love the fall. Fall by Maeve Fahey Fall is an amazing season of the year. I can smell the scent of the natural fall air. I can taste the delicious pumpkin bread that I eat. I can feel the beautiful fall breeze around me. I can see the fall leaves changing color. I love to hear the happy kids playing in fall. Fall is my favorite season. Fall by Caroline Weldon Fall is the most wonderful time of the year! Early fall contains Halloween! Seeing the unique costumes is my favorite part! In fall, I feel the cool breeze stroking my face in a gentle way. Crunch, crunch is what I hear running through the leaves. Leaves changing color are beautiful to me. Later, fall contains a thankful holiday, Thanksgiving! Smelling the turkey is what I do for hours because my mom always hosts Thanksgiving. My favorite part of fall is tasting the warm apple cider. Fall is loved in many different ways! 12 My Fall Poem by Jillian Berry Leaves are falling all around, Sound of pine cones crunching on the ground. Piles of leaves to jump in! On the couch near the fire, as warm As can be, Fall is coming, Can’t you see? Fall by Arianna Parker Fall is jumping in leaves, And wearing long sleeves, Feeling the nice fall breeze, And having to cough and sneeze, Eating pumpkin pie, While watching the leaves fly by. Halloween is getting near, Give a scare because it’s right here. Thanksgiving is getting near so give a cheer. I’m so sad that fall is flying by ‘cause I’ll miss the pumpkin pie! I love fall! The Little Puppy – (a spelling story) by Carli Kennedy and Elizabeth Clancy One dark, foggy evening, a little puppy was wandering through the forest looking for a home. Her name was Brownie. She was a chocolate lab. She was two months old. She got separated from her mother when her home was burned down. She still had her tiny red collar on. She had no idea that something was about to happen… She looked and saw eyes were staring at her from all directions. Worried, she ran away with fear. Before she could get away, a BIG shadow appeared in front of her. She felt like her heart was beating a thousand times a minute! Still searching for her mother, she was tired and hungry. It was getting really dark and she found a warm, cozy place to sleep. It was a hole in a tree trunk. When she woke up, she realized she had slept in an apple tree. There were apples everywhere for her to eat! She was starving! She gobbled up the apples. Soon, she was full. Dark clouds rolled in and covered the sun. Quickly she ran for shelter, but it was just a light shower. When the clouds were gone, she met a little robin named Twitter. He loved to twitter. Brownie and Twitter became best friends, but two months later it was November, and Twitter had to fly south for the winter. Brownie was all alone again. Suddenly, there was a rustle of leaves. Brownie moved slowly toward the sound. Then a dog that looked just like her, but bigger, jumped out of its hiding place. It was her mother! Instantly, she jumped with joy to see her mother, and they played all day. Then they went to their new home. 13 CANDY CORN by Nora Buell I love candy corn It’s my life since I was born It’s the treat that warms my mouth It’s the treat I can’t resist It’s number one on my candy list Halloween, my lucky day Because I get the candy corn way It’s like magic in my mouth HALLOWEEN by Jackson Marconi & Ben Mazanec Halloween’s so scary It makes you hairy. I saw some bats in the air And they all were holding a flare I saw a costume as a ghost pumpkin And then it made me run over to dunkin. So they ask me do you want a piece of steak I said no its Halloween so don’t bake for goodness sake. My Three Things by Charlie Ballerene The luxurious hotel is on the coast of Florida. It is fun to go on vacation if you go with family or friends, but it is just as fun to go by yourself. One fun thing about vacations is that you can walk or drive around and learn about where you are, and you can see all of the astonishing sights. My favorite places to go are Florida and New Hampshire. I like to go to Florida because my grandpa, cousins, and great grandma live there. I like to go to New Hampshire because my favorite hotel, the Mountain View Grand, is there. I love to take vacations! The black round puck went top corner last night. One good thing about hockey is that you get really cool uniforms. Also, you can get a hockey stick that is heavy or light or whatever you like. An interesting fact is that I made the A team two years in a row. The organization I play in is Duxbury Youth Hockey. I brought in this puck because it was the puck I played with in the championship I was in. I love hockey! The bright red crayon drew a thin line on the paper. My favorite things to draw are designs that look like tree roots. My favorite color is any shade of green. I usually draw for fun. I also like to draw dogs. I like to draw dogs because they are my favorite animal. I love to draw! 14 My Three Things by Charlotte Diamond I found a pretty white sand dollar sitting on the water’s edge one afternoon. It was at the beach. It reminds me of our beach house on Saquish. Some mornings we would go on a walk to find sea glass and we would actually find some sand dollars, too! I love finding sand dollars with my cousins, but it can be hard to find them. If they are brown, I won’t take them because they are still alive. They have to be white (bleached) to be dead. If we are not finding sand dollars, we are on the raft in the water. If the water is too cold, we will play tag on the beach. It’s always so enjoyable! We’re there all summer, so we have a lot of excitement! This item represents the friendship between my cousin, Sydney, and me. She is also nine. I love my cousin and all my family with all my heart! We are very close cousins. The locket has a picture of us when we were in preschool. It means a lot to me! The last and most important of my three things is family! It is a picture of my sisters, my dog, and me. We are a family of six plus one psycho dog! My mom’s name is Kristen and she is too busy being a mom to have a job, but my dad, David, is a vet. I have three sisters and a dog named Dobbie. The twins, Samantha and Alexandra, are thirteen. Isabel is twelve, Dobbie is six months, and I am nine. We all love each other very much! Those are my three things! My Three Things by Carly McDermott This is a glass dachshund my aunt gave me for my birthday when I was seven. This dachshund reminds me of my best friend, Iris. The first time I met her was in June, 2007, and she is a dog. Also, this dachshund reminds me of the time I got my dog. There were two dachshunds to choose from, so I picked the tiny dog which is now my dog who is so cute because she has a wet nose and a long skinny body. Now, she is in our family. Speaking of family, this is a photo of my family in Orlando, Florida. This picture was taken in Disney World. In Disney World, I loved riding roller coasters such as the Rocking Roller Coaster, Space Mountain, and Splash Mountain. I also liked spending time with my family. In this picture are my mom, my dad, Grandma, Grandpa, my eleven-‐year-‐old sister, Kate, my four-‐year-‐old brother, Gus, and me! All the people I love are in this picture. Also, I could not be happier in this picture. Another thing I love is gymnastics, and these special red, six inch ribbons remind me of gymnastics. I go to Gymnastics with Flair. Gymnastics is the only place I feel comfortable. No one can take gymnastics away from me, not even my parents. Every time I fall down, I just say, “Keep trying!” and “Do not give up!” and something ends up pulling me right back up. I just love the feeling of flipping on the floor. I will do gymnastics until my hands fall off. Without gymnastics, I would not be the person I am today. My Three Things by Will Leese The long, thin snowboard soared though the air on Lakeville Valley Mountain. When I snowboard, the equipment I use are a big, puffy jacket and warm, snowboard boots. When I go down the mountain, I feel the wind in my face and it feels like I’m flying. I love to snowboard because all of that stuff. In the summer, I like going to the beach. I like the way the ocean breeze hits my face and how the sand feels in between my toes, and I love collecting seashells. The seashells feel smooth and have big swirls at the top. They have an opening on the side where you can hear the ocean and the crashing waves. On rainy days, I play with my yoyo. I have a green yoyo that I like to use a lot. I can do three tricks with it: around the world, walk the dog, and sleeping dog. My friend taught me how to do all the tricks. The type of yoyo I have is a Duncan Butterfly. It is made to do tricks. 15 Monster Wanted by Rebecca DiVirgilio One morning I woke up and looked around. “My monster is gone,” I finally noticed. I ran around my room looking everywhere, but I couldn’t find her. Then I went downstairs and into the kitchen to find disaster! I looked through every drawer in the whole room, but I still couldn’t find her. Then I remembered she told me that her favorite number was one million because she wanted to steal one million pieces of Starburst candy. Then I thought the one place I could find her was the candy store, so I grabbed a granola bar and went. On my way, I thought that I might need some help, so I took a quick turn and rode to my friend’s house. I told her that my monster was gone and she said she’d help me. We got on our way again, off to the candy store. On the way, she asked me to describe what my monster looked like. She is about the size of a folder, but she is shaped like a gumdrop. She is neon yellow and has light blue eyes. She has two arms and legs that are green, and on her back is her name, Dots, in blue. Lastly, she has a nice orange smile. When we got to the candy store, I ran down the hallway, looking in every aisle I went by. Then I came to the last aisle and looked up. I saw that all of the boxes of Starburst were gone and, at the last moment, I saw a flash of neon yellow go around the corner. My friend and I ran after her and reached her just before she got outside. Then she calmed down and dropped the boxes of Starburst. While we put them away, she sat nicely and waited. I said thanks to my friend and walked home with her. Monster Wanted by Bennett Fraser Mr. Fluffy is the type of monster that loves to steal candy from children. He’s about three feet tall, and loves to hide in bushes. He’s neon orange and is the shape of a square. Every year on Halloween, he hides in bushes and scares children so he can get their candy. If you see him walking around, you will probably see all sorts of delicious candy matted in his orange fur. He also loves the number, 100, because on Halloween he wants to collect 100 pieces of candy or more. He has bright yellow eyes that work like a flashlight so he can spy on kids and see what candy they have in their baskets. His legs and arms are very skinny, and instead of fingernails and toenails he has candy corn. When children come home from trick or treating their parents say, “Where is all your candy?” and the kids say, “A monster took it all!” A Poem by Friend Weiler & Ethan Smith Bruins Fair, Amazing Scoring, Assisting, Skating Massachusetts, Montreal, Canada Tripping, Checking, Losing Cheap, Dirty Canadiens 16 A Poem by Alia and Arden Young Pink Bright, Cheerful Painting, Partying, Coloring Strawberry, Rose, Blueberry, Water Swimming, Morning, Drawing Dark, Light Blue A Poem by Mary Macaluso and Abby Hewitt Hawaii Hot, sunny, Steaming, Soothing, Refreshing, Palm trees, Oceans, Icicles, Mountains, Freezing, Skiing, Snowing, Cold, Icy, Alaska A Poem by Maggie Strauss and Anya Teehan Sun Hot, bright Burning, shining, blazing Warm daylight, cool darkness Waxing, waning, orbiting Dull, dusty Moon I Am by Molly Stapleton I am a girl who loves to laugh and has lots of energy I wonder where I’ll live in ten years I hear the crickets in my backyard at night I see a wonderful future as I live my life I want to go on a trip outside of America I am a girl who loves to laugh and has lots of energy I pretend I’m not hurt when I am I feel the wind blow through my hair as I run down the basketball court I touch the fur of my puppy as she comes up to cuddle I worry about my brothers I cry when a family member gets hurt 17 I am a girl who loves to laugh and who has lots of energy I understand that it’s good to try new things I say nothing is impossible I dream of being a famous dancer I try to never give up I hope I accomplish all of my goals I am a girl who loves to laugh and has lots of energy I am Molly Stapleton I Am by Weston Patrick Moran I am a boy with many dreams and I’m very kind I wonder if there is another universe with more people like us I hear the sound of my laughing when I’m having fun I want to be an actor when I’m older I am a boy with many dreams and I’m very kind I pretend I am okay when really I’m sad I feel the pencil lead when I am sketching and drawing I touch the keyboard when typing a story on the computer I worry when I can’t find something that is special to me I cry when my grandparents are leaving to go back home to Ohio I am a boy with many dreams and I’m very kind I understand that school is very important I say, “Be Yourself Because Everyone Is Taken.” I dream that one day I will have a family of my own I try to do my best everywhere I go I hope I have a bright future I am a boy with many dreams and I’m very kind I am Weston Patrick Moran 18 Water Cycle Story by Grace Zimmer It all started fifteen years ago when I was lying, lonely, on the surface of the big sea. I swayed back and forth with the sun pounding its rays on me. All of a sudden, I was feeling a little dizzy and thought I was flying. I looked down and saw myself miles above the great ocean. I also saw my friends, John and Molly, quickly rise. I wondered what was happening. Then I thought, “Oh, yes, it’s evaporation time.” Above me, I saw Molly and John join all the other water droplets to form all sorts of puffy white clouds. I started rising rapidly. Then all of a sudden, I stopped. I was now in a cloud. What part of the water cycle was this? “Oh, wait, it’s condensation,” I moaned. “BOOM! CRASH! BOOM!” I heard. Then I saw a vibrant flash of lightning. “Oh, no, precipitation! Not again!” I shouted. Finally, I dropped from the cloud after Molly and John. I flew through the air, tumbling down, round and round! PLOP! “Where am I?” I thought. I looked around and saw myself sitting on the surface of the great big sea! “Here goes collection again!” I groaned. “Not again!” I said. Leaf letter by Annabelle Walsh Dear Leaves, I want you to stay on the trees because you are beautiful, and without you, when someone is hot, they will have no shade to stand under. Also, it is very hard work raking you into piles and piles of leaves, and it especially hurts our backs sometimes to rake you guys. So please take my advice and please, please stay on the trees! Sincerely, Annabelle Walsh MONSTER WANTED by Ava Corey A couple days ago, in Italy, a monster escaped! The guard had mysteriously disappeared. The monster had unlocked the cage and simply walked out. No one has seen him since. His name is Frankie. His body shape is a circle, about the size of your palm. His body color is green. On the outline of his body is a darker green than the green inside. His arms are located on the sides of his body. He has four legs that are located at the bottom of his body. Each leg has a little green ball at the tip of it. It is the same with the arms, little green balls at the tip of each. His legs are also green. A little lower than the center of the body is a black line which is his mouth. A little higher than the center of the body is his eye, which is about the size of your thumb, but square. His eye is red and in the center of his eye is a dark red pupil. That is everything you need to know about Frankie. REWARD: $10,000. Please find Frankie!! Monster Wanted by Lily Watts 19 Oh no!! The monster, Perky, has escaped from her owner’s house. The fence was open and Perky noticed it and sprinted out. The fence was NEVER open. This happened in 1999, in the state of Texas. Perky is green, purple, blue, pink, and red. If you see those colors running down the street, check to see if it is Perky. Perky the monster’s eyes are as blue as a blue moon. There are only two of them like a human. They are in the middle of her face. Perky’s lips are so red they shimmer like glitter. There is one pair of them right under her eyes. Perky’s hair is very dark purple. Perky’s face is green as grass, and it is a perfect circle. Perky has a lot of wrinkles on her face because she is 6,000 years old. Perky has a red shirt and on the back there is a pink number 27. Perky is hairy and very fluffy. She sounds like a baby getting tickled by a feather. Her body shape is a triangle. Perky’s arms are in the middle of her body, and her legs are on the bottom of her body. Her legs are rectangular and are covered in dark blue. Perky is about two feet tall. Make sure, if you see a monster running down the street, to check to see if it is Perky. 20
