Weave a sophisticated necklace
using peyote and pearls
The elegant look of fine pearl jewelry is applied here to a peyote
necklace. A band of metallic beads works well with pearls — the two
blend together in a feminine and elegant way. The Mabe pearl makes
a sophisticated centerpiece, but this technique can easily be adjusted
to other styles of cabochons, such as the face above.

These earrings are a revision of my very first project in
metal clay. I have a fairly large area of raspberry brambles
in my yard which I harvest daily for about a month every
summer. At the height of the season, we always have a
party we call “Raspberry Fest.” I fancy myself a bit of a
gourmet, and so there are raspberries included in every
course of the meal. Wearing these earrings has become a
part of my annual tradition.

ALTERNATIVE: The grape cluster’s stem was a real piece of twig covered in slip. (If you fire
combustible materials inside of metal clay, it is best to use a kiln and have adequate ventilation.)
The leaf was created separately and a piece of fine silver wire was embedded in the back of the leaf
with paste slip. After both pieces were fired and finished, the wire was soldered to the twig piece. The
grapes were sculpted on and glazed in a method similar to the other fruits.

Polymer Clay
Celtic Magic
Polymer clay isn’t really clay, although it can be worked in similar
ways. It comes in dozens of colors and can be cured right in your
home oven at temperatures under 300 F. Although it is not toxic,
some people dislike the smell of baking clay. If so, you can bake
the clay in a covered roasting pan you will not be using for food.
These are often found for a few dollars at thrift and resale shops.
Materials
• Polymer clay in a dark color
• Filigree findings or texture
tool
• Needle or T-pin
• Head pins
• Various beads
• Mica powder
• spray sealer (optional)
• Waxed paper
• Pasta machine (optional)
• Cardstock for baking
surface
• Oven
1. Roll a piece of clay between your
palms until it forms a ball (a, b).
. Flatten the ball slightly, and place it between two filigree findings or two pieces
of waxed paper (c, d).
. Apply even pressure on the clay, creating a round disk about 1⁄4-in. or 5 mm.
thick. Be sure the clay does not ooze
through the filigree, as it will be hard
to remove (e). If you flattened the clay
between pieces of waxed paper, peel
the clay off the paper and add texture
with a needle, button, sandpaper, plant
leaf or rubber stamp. If you flattened the
clay between pieces of filigree, peel it off
carefully. Either way, try to keep the clay
from losing the disk shape.
4. Allow the disk to “rest” for several
minutes so it can stiffen a little. If you
want to highlight the texture, rub a bit of
mica powder such as Pearl Ex over the
bead. It looks best if you only contact the
surface, keeping the mica away from the
depressions in the clay (f, g).
5. Hold the disk gently so it does not
distort, and pierce it from the side with a
needle (h).
7. Lay the disk on a sheet of thick
cardstock. Place the cardstock and clay
charm into the preheated oven. Bake for
the amount of time recommended by the
manufacturer, and allow the charm to
cool in the oven.
8. When your charm is cool, push a head
pin through the hole, adding other beads
if you wish (i).
9. Following the directions under “Bead
Dangles,” finish your charm and add a
jump ring.
