‘I Think I’ll…’
The first time we ever heard of Far
Rockaway in New York was in Nashville, TN and in an unusual manner.
WSM All-Night host Ralph Emery
ask us to answer the phones while
he was clearing the Associated Press
wire.The phone rang several times and
they were from all parts of the nation.
One was from a cab driver in Boston,
MA and wanted to hear a song by
Bill Anderson. But the most unusual
came from a lady who described herself as a resident of Far Rockaway,
NY. The hour was midnight, central
time, and she was saying, “Sir, I’m so
depressed. I think I’ll kill myself tonight.” That was stunning and no
amount of conversation of our part helped ease her concern. Ralph said she had done
that on another occasion and the two us never heard any more from this mystery lady.
And then the story broke two weeks ago when the storm called Sandy roared thru the
eastern part of the United States, including Far Rockaway, NY. A renewable thought
indeed!
• Sandra Wilson of Toccoa keeps us informed with Allen’s United Methodist Church
news through the church program and this landmark must be growing leaps and bounds
and is even multi-color on the bulletin.
My, the changes that have taken place since we joined that church at the age of seven
– 71 years ago.

Airman Jones was assigned to the induction center,
where he advised new recruits about their government benefits, especially their GI insurance.
It wasn’t long before Captain Smith noticed that Airman Jones was having a staggeringly high successrate, selling insurance to nearly 100% of the recruits
he advised.
Rather than ask about this, the Captain stood in the
back of the room and listened to Jones’ sales pitch.
Jones explained the basics of GI Insurance to the new recruits, and then said,
“If you have GI Insurance and go into battle and are killed, the government
has to pay $200,000 to your beneficiaries. If you don’t have GI insurance, and
you go into battle and get killed, the government only has to pay a maximum
of $6000.”
“Now,” he concluded, “which group do you think they are going to send into
battle first?”
