Camembert `Big Day Out`
Vincentia Vibe - The voice of our school Term 4 Week 3A 21/10/2015 Camembert ‘Big Day Out’ Last month Vincentia High students entered their Camembert Cheese for judging at the Camembert ‘Big Day Out’ in Blacktown. Here is what the students had to say about the day: Over the past couple of months, Vincentia High School has participated in Camembert cheese making which included making and presenting our cheese to be tasted by professionals. The process of making the cheese was long and tiring, but worth the effort. Making the cheese itself took almost four hours and we also got the chance to take it home for the night. Flipping the cheese twice a day was a priority. Taking the cheese to Sydney was a great learning experience for our team. We now know what we did wrong and what went wrong and we have learnt a lot for next year. Even though we came third out of six schools, our cheese was up to the standard for a silver medal at the Easter Show! Well done to Shoalhaven High School for coming first and second with their cheese. We would like to give a big thank you to the organisers of the day and especially for the fun activities. We would like to give a very big thank you to Mr Glenday and Ms Boyce for dealing with us on the long trip to Sydney. Congratulations to Year 8 student Lucy Graham on the success of her Life Skills Expo held last Wednesday 14 October in the school hall. During Term 3 Lucy has been a participant in the Youth Frontiers Mentoring program coordinated by Linda Hawkins from Shoalhaven Workplace Learning. This program is aimed at giving Year 8 and 9 students across the state an opportunity to build life skills and self-confidence by working collaboratively with a mentor on community projects. Students received a minimum of 30 hours mentoring from volunteers who have an interest in helping youth make a difference in their local community. Lucy Graham hosted the Expo to showcase the resources available in our community to support young people in making decisions about their future and to “Give Young People a Voice”. Lucy was mentored by Lorraine Fraser-Walsh, Ali Taylor and Jacqui Copeland and would like to thank them very much for their guidance and support. The day was organised into two sessions that consisted of guest speakers and 9 stalls offering a variety of information and give-aways. The most popular stall was the pop up cinema where students could watch a short film titled ‘Bullying’ while eating a homemade cookie with a smiley face on it. Robbie Collins from UOW Shoalhaven Campus presented a slide show titled ‘My Future, My Opportunities’. Ms Gilbert talked about the importance of getting 8 hours sleep, having a healthy diet, making a study plan and creating your own space free from distraction to study for 1 hour a day. Fiona Liam from the YWCA presented ‘Why Communication is Important for Healthy Relationships’ and included tips on how to be assertive and express your feelings in a way that doesn’t hurt others. Gemma Hart from Bay and Basin Community Resources gave a brief history on bullying. Keith Robinson from Bendigo Bank talked about budgeting and gave tips on how to create a budget and stick to it. Darrin Marshall from the Bay and Basin Leisure Centre gave a talk about exercise, health and wellbeing. The day was a huge success and Lucy said that she learnt so much about what goes on behind the scenes and the amount of organising involved in putting together an event for the community. Lucy would like to thank all of the people who supported her with the Expo and hope that the Year 8 students took something positive away from the day. Celebrating our school spirit! Last Wednesday Lucy showcased her skills and qualities in planning, organising and running the Year 8 Expo that addressed many issues being faced in a teenagers world. The Expo was fantastic, empowering students to think of their future, beyond school. We congratulate Lucy on her awesome effort and organisation skills. These values can be shown in many ways within the school community. It is these actions of our students we, as a school, are proud of and wish to acknowledge. Each week a student/s from the school, in any year, will receive a FREE movie ticket to the Huskisson Theatre as recognition of their Vincentia High School spirit. Congratulations to our winners!
