Skiing, snowboarding and Nordic skiing are what usually come to mind when winter sports are mentioned. Both Cannon Mountain and Loon Mountain offer exciting opportunities for winter fun, and both are close by. Parking isn’t an issue – leave your vehicle at the resort, and catch the shuttle to Loon. But the fun doesn’t stop there! Loon also offers SnowTubing for those who don’t ski but who want to enjoy sliding down the mountain – great for the little ones as well! Tube rentals are required. Loon’s Adventure Center also offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails and rentals. Guided snowshoe tours are also available for the snowshoer and cross country skier. Ice skating rent- als are also available. Zipline rides are available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Winter hiking and snowshoeing trails are readily available, for every skill level. Snowshoeing is a great family sport, offering great exercise and “together” time. There are many trails that are great for both younger hiker or snowshoer and adults either trying it for the first time or getting back into it. Winter hiking can be challenging, so there are some trails best left for the experienced winter hiker. New Hampshire has a great trail system for snowmobile enthusiasts. Lincoln offers a great base for day trips or as a stopover on a longe r rid e. Don’t have your own machine? No problem – rentals are available. Moose and wildlife watching, either on your own or with a guided tour with Pemi Valley Excursions, are usu- ally best at dawn and dusk. If you’re on your own, and you spot a moose, pull over carefully to safely watch them from inside your car – they are wild animals, and can be unpredictable. They’re also huge, so enjoy them at a distance; you’ll be safe and the moose will probably stay around longer. If you want to venture further afield you could drive over the Kanc to North Conway’s outlet shopping. Santa’s Village, located in Jefferson, opens weekends during the holiday season. Your little ones will enjoy a visit to the North Pole for the rides (yes, there are rides – weather permitting!) and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Remember to dress warmly!
