N.H. Audubon Needs Your Help on Statewide Bird Survey!
Last fall, backyard bird-watchers were
worried that something had happened to the
birds because their feeders were unusually
quiet. Now that winter has settled, in New
Hampshire Audubon wants to know if your
birds are back. Are your bird feeders quiet or
busy? Let NH Audubon know by taking part
in the annual NH Backyard Winter Bird
Survey on February 13th and 14th. Biologists
need assistance from citizens all over the
Granite State to get a clearer picture of what’s
really happening with our feeder birds this
winter.
Anyone can participate in the Backyard
Winter Bird Survey by counting the birds in
their own backyard on the survey weekend
and sending the results on a special reporting
form to NH Audubon. To receive a copy of
the reporting form and complete instructions
on how to participate, send a self-addressed,
stamped, long envelope to: New Hampshire
Audubon/Winter Bird Survey, 84 Silk Farm
Rd, Concord, NH 03301-8200. Forms are
also available at NH Audubon centers in
Auburn, Concord and Manchester, or you
can find them on the NH Audubon web site,
along with more information about the survey at www.nhaudubon.org under the
Birding page.
Data from the Backyard Winter Bird
Survey is used to track changes in the distribution and abundance of many species. Each
year about 1,300 observers across the state
count the birds coming to their feeders. “The
survey will show us if the fall reports of quiet
feeders is reflected in actual data this winter,”
said Survey Coordinator/Biologist Rebecca
Suomala. Fall is an unpredictable time to
evaluate bird populations at feeders because
bird movements are affected by migration,
weather and food supplies. The mid-winter
survey provides a more stable measure from
which to compare years. “But the strength of
the survey is in long term trends,” says
Suomala. “We now have more than twenty
years of data and over the long term, natural
year-to-year fluctuations smooth out so we
can see what’s happening to bird populations
as a whole.”
Reports of a lack of birds are just as valuable as reports of many birds. “If everyone
reported only when they have a lot of birds,
we wouldn’t be able to see the declines,” says
Suomala. “Feeders may be quiet this winter,
but we want to know that.” The most important thing is to participate each year regardless of how many or how few birds you have.
This provides a consistent long-term set of
data that shows both the ups and downs.
All NH residents are encouraged to take
part. For more info about the Backyard
Winter Bird Survey, please call NH
Audubon at 224-9909 or go to the web site at
www.nhaudubon.org and click on Birding.
Note: There are two surveys this February.
NH Audubon’s Backyard Winter Bird Survey that
takes place in New Hampshire only, and the Great
Backyard Bird Count, a nation-wide web-based
survey on February 12-15. Details are at
www.birdsource.org/gbbc/.

Winter In New Hampshire • February 2010
Winter is nearing an end and by late
February, daytime temperatures in
southern New Hampshire may be warm
enough to be considered maple sugaring
weather. The native Americans regarded the first full moon of early spring to
be the start of the maple season and time
to tap the sugar maples. This year that
Maple Moonfalls on February 28th.
Unlike the native Americans, few
New Hampshire maple producers set up
camp in the maple orchards and stay for
the duration of the six-week season.
And unlike those early sugar makers, we
no longer pour the sap into hollowed
logs and boil it by dropping in red hot
stones. The natives also made all of their
harvest into sugar, which could be
stored and transported easier than liquid syrup.
plastic syrup jugs. Even with these
changes, the basic idea of turning
maple sap into syrup or sugar remains
the same, remove most of the water.
With new innovations such as reverse
osmosis machines and energy saving
steam hoods, many producers are able
to remove some of the water before the
sap reaches the evaporator, thus reducing boiling time and conserving fuel.
Some use vacuum on their plastic tubing to substantially increase sap flow.
When you pass by a sugar house
this spring and see steam billowing
from the cupola atop the roof, stop for
a visit. Maple producers enjoy discussing their work, they will tell you
what modern equipment they use and
will demonstrate how this food product is made.
February is the start of the maple syrup season
Today’s maple producers have
added a modern twist to an ancient tradition. They now boil their sap in large
stainless steel evaporator pans and package most of their finished product in

Inexpensive fun at a New Hampshire Sugar House
(Story courtesy of NHMaple Producers)
There are many low-cost outdoor winter
activities families can enjoy such as sledding,
ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing, to name a few.But when
the snow and ice begin to melt and patches of
mud grow larger, those outdoor activities
become limited.
During February and March, one free
excursion the whole family will enjoy is visiting a sugar house. Here you can tour a maple
orchard, learn how the process has evolved
over hundreds of years.
Maple producers will gladly explain the
sugaring process and answer any questions
you may have. They will probably even offer
you a freesample of fresh, warm maple syrup.
Its sweet, heavenly taste will surely make you
smile.
Sugar houses all across New Hampshire

The New England Pond Hockey Classic
is an adult pond hockey tournament which
will take place on Lake Winnipesaukee in
Meredith during February the 5th-7th. This
4v4 round robin tournament will draw teams
from all over New England. With its five divisions, the NEPHC provides an opportunity
for every hockey player the chance to experience hockey as it used to be played. The visitors to Meredith during tournament weekend
will truly feel like they have traveled back in
time as they pull into the village with its
charming character, old New England architecture situated upon a frozen lake littered
with pond hockey rinks.
“We couldn’t be happier to call Lake
Winnipesaukee and Meredith home” said
Scott Crowder, Founder of Ekal Excursions
LLC and Tournament Director of the New
England Pond Hockey Classic. “This location offers everything we need to put on a
great event, from the hotels to the restaurants,
shops, surrounding mountains and of course

Head to Loon
to...GOLF??
CASAFundraiser
Loon Mountain and the Court Appointed Special Advocates
(CASA) of New Hampshire will celebrate their ten-year partnership
with a return to snow golf on Frida y, February 5th. Snow golf is just
what it sounds like: golf played on snow. Loon will transform its Blue
Ox trail into an 18-hole golf course, and participants will ski, snowboard or snowshoe the course. The event will be a double-flight, ninehole “shot-gun” style scramble format. Prizes will even be award for the
“closest to the pin” and “longest drive.”
Over the past ten years, the CASA Snow Fest at Loon has raised
more than $100,000. Loon first hosted a snow golf event in 2000 as
part of the inaugural CASA Snow Fest winter fundraiser. “Over the
years, the event has taken on different looks, but the mission, purpose
and spirit has never changed,” said CASA Executive Director, Marcia
Sink. “The funds we have raised have helped CASA serve more of the
states children who need a strong advocate by their side.”
The Snow Fest isn’t just about raising money for a good cause. The
day is also an opportunity to celebrate the more than 300 volunteers
who give of themselves throughout the year to CASA. Over the past
ten years, Loon Mountain has offered a day of complimentary skiing
and snowboarding, along with other activities for CASA volunteers
and their family. “These are men and women who are in the trenches
with our kids in the program day-in and day-out,” continued Sink. “For
many kids, these CASA volunteers are their life-line. We are so grateful that Loon not only offers its hospitality with a site for the Snow
Fest, but also is so gracious with the Volunteer Appreciation Day.”
Participants of the CASA Snow Fest include both businesses and
individuals. Some are involved in the court system and work with
CASA daily. Others are
families who have been
helped by CASA. And still
others are business owners
who are looking to support
their community and have
seen how CASA has made a
difference. The Rowley
Agency of Concord has
been a proud supporter of
this event since the beginning. “We know that the
CASA program works. This
organization is breaking the
cycle of child abuse in New
Hampshire,” said Rowley
Agency’s Bill VerPlanck.
“We hope other businesses,
large or small, will join as a
sponsor and enjoy a great
day at Loon Mountain”

February 2010 • Winter In New Hampshire
Okay, so you’re not a skier, but all your
friends and family members are. Consider
getting your winter thrills with snowmobiling, one of the more popular winter
activities in New Hampshire.
The Lincoln-Woodstock region
of the White Mountains stands at
the crossroads of NH’s vast trail system and attracts novices and experts
alike because of its excellent
groomed trails and scenery that’s as
thrilling as the ride. Within the
Lincoln-Woodstock town boundaries are 75 miles of groomed trails,
plus two excellent downhill ski
resorts, a wide variety of accommodation and dining options, and
miles of cross country and snowshoeing trails.
It’s an easy place to customize a winter adventure getaway.
Snowmobiling is an excellent way to see
the remote back country and enjoy rare views
of the vast White Mountain National Forest.
Most trails in the Lincoln-Woodstock area
traverse scenic bridges over frozen streams,
skirt along flat railroad beds bordered by picturesque ponds, and some even lead up a
mountain or two. One of the most popular
rides is on the Franconia Notch bike trail,
which leads to the Cannon Mountain Ski
Area—an excellent place for a hot chocolate
stop. Mount Sully and Russell Peak are popular area rides for experienced snowmobiles.
Three rental outfitters in Lincoln-

from Florida are not uncommon. Whether
from the Sun Belt or city terrain, visitors are
provided a safe and comfortable experience
along with their winter thrills and chills. All
outfitter guides keep their groups small, give
complete safety and handling instructions
before venturing out, and make sure visiting
riders are properly dressed (snowsuits and
boots are available for rent). They also moni-

snowmobiling with expert guides who can
handle the machines and terrain. Alpine
Adventures offers half-day, full-day and
overnight tours, including a “Sunset Tour”
that features a ride home in the moonlight.
Outback Kayak rents hourly for $49, and the
machines at Pemi Valley Excursions feature
double seats, plus hand and thumb warmers.
Helmets are provided and required by all outfitters, and all the snowmobiles are top of the
line.
Snowmobile outfitters are accustomed to
helping the first-time snowmobiler. Groups
tor terrain conditions for safety, and they
know the best, hidden scenic vistas. Riders
may travel singly or in pairs. Rental fees for a
double snowmobile are slightly higher.
Several Lincoln-Woodstock hotels,
motels and inns are right on the trails. Some
offer package deals for snowmobilers. The
area also features numerous condominium
and townhouse rental opportunities with
lodgings to house small or large groups in a
comfortable home-away-from home setting.

day on the trails. Look for parking at the
Whale’s Tale Waterpark and at the Flume
within Franconia Notch State Park.
Nestled in the heart of the White Mountains,
in picturesque Waterville Valley Resort the
Black Bear Lodge is a well appointed all suite
hotel with one bedroom condominiums.
Comfortably sleeping 4-6, each unit features a
fully-equipped kitchen, dining/living area, full
bath and separate bedroom.
The lodge also offers an indoor /outdoor pool,
sauna, steam room, and whirlpool, a children's

Winter In New Hampshire • February 2010
This “heated” Chili Fest taking place on
Saturday, February 20 in the Eastern Slope
Inn Resort in No. Conway from 11 AM to 2
PM, combines tough competition, top secret
recipes and family fun. The public is invited
to sample their way through this
belly filling event for $5/person
including six chili taste tickets,
coffee and desserts from The Met
and homemade ice cream from
Cold Stone Creamery. This year’s
cook-off will also feature added
competitions, a live band and
karaoke with Sound-FX for an
exciting day sure to warm you up
this winter.
The Mt. Washington Valley
Chamber of Commerce invites all
restaurant or professional chefs to
participate in the 7th Annual
Chilly Chili Cook-Off. Participants will
compete for cash prizes and trophies, along
with the opportunity to feature their winning
chilly recipes at an upcoming Chamber
After-Hours and on the Mt. Washington
Valley Chamber of Commerce’s homepage.
$100 will be awarded to the 1st place winners
for best chili in both the judges and people’s
choice categories. Awards will be given to the
2nd place winner of the people’s choice category, and the winner of “Best Presentation.”
The chili entries can be of any variety; red or
green, vegetarian or beef, spicy or mild. The
chili, in addition to being judged by the public for the people’s choice vote, will be judged
by local celebrities including American
cups and napkins. Power can be provided if
needed to keep the chili warm during the
competition. All chili entries should be prepared ahead of time and brought ready to
serve during the competition. If a business or
individual chef would like to participate but is unable to staff their table,
the Chamber will work to provide a
server for them.
New to this year’s competition is
the “The Corn Bread Cook-Off
Extravaganza,” where participants can
show off their baking skills and
guarded family recipes for a chance to
be named “Best Cornbread in the Mt.
Washington Valley.” All corn bread
entries must be ready to serve during
the competition for a chance to win a
prize.
In addition to the chili and corn
bread entries, this year’s competition is getting a little funky and festive with the “Crazy
Hat Contest.” A prize will be awarded for the
most unique headpiece, so participants are
encouraged to dig through their closets for a
funky hat revival, or make their own unique
or outrageous headpiece.

Annual Chilly Chili Cook-Off or to register,
