Scott ‘62 1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Spring 2008 Dear Friends, As we progress through the new year following another successful Fall semester, challenges and opportunities remain for Xavier University and the City of New Orleans as well. I remain optimistic about our future! In a city that was severely impacted following Hurricane Katrina, familiar things provide an essential source of optimism and encouragement. It is in this context that faculty and staff continue to work diligently to keep Xavier strong. If the enrollment figure is a good measure, we are making strides in our recovery and emerging as a beacon of hope for rebuilding New Orleans. Most encouraging is the fact that applications received for admission into the next Freshman class at Xavier are substantially higher than last year at this time. Still, there is much work to be done toward the goal of developing key strategies for future successes at Xavier: We are entering the second phase of our campus strategic planning process. When completed, we believe, this important tool will help us significantly define appropriate courses to follow over the next five to ten years. Our newly launched Freshman Initiative, designed to improve the campus experience (as well as retention) among new students, is now underway. This current freshman class is the first test-case of the new initiative, but some eight months deep into the program the consensus seems to be that it is already achieving some of its desired goals. We continue to increase our financial stability and revitalize our campus, thanks to the generous support of our alumni and individual donors as well as substantial gifts from corporations and foundations. These investments have been vital to our successful recovery efforts. To our many supporters, we are extremely grateful. This Spring, our campus will witness an important groundbreaking ceremony for a major expansion of the College of Pharmacy building, a long awaited dream that could finally be fulfilled thanks in large part to the generosity of the nation of Qatar following Hurricane Katrina. We look forward to the implementation of Xavier’s goals and objectives in 2008 as the second phase of recovery commences. The entire university community has been engaged and continues to be involved in our ongoing plans for a prosperous future. Norman C. Francis President XG Spring 2008 2 Au Courant Cu rrent Events, News and O ther Happenings at Xavier Growth Leads to Creation of Division of Business Besides enjoying a national reputation as a school where students attend to major in the sciences and health related fields, one of the fastest growing areas at Xavier has been in Business. That growth has resulted in the creation recently of a new Division of Business, to replace what had been an academic department inside the university’s College of Arts & Sciences. Nationally accredited, with more than 250 students enrolled as majors, the Business Department is only the second academic division in the College of Arts and Sciences (the other being the Division of Education.) Three Join XU Board, Moorehead Chair The university’s governing Board of Trustees has new leadership with the election of a new chair and the addition of three new members. The newly elected chair is Dr. Myron Moorehead, local surgeon and director of the Women’s Laser Institute in Kenner, LA, and a board member since 2004. He takes over the leadership reins from Carroll Suggs, who had served in that capacity the past three years. The three newest members of the board, selected for their first three-year terms, are Sister Doris Blum, S.B.S.‘55, James Garner and Janice Frielot Wilkins ‘67. 50 YEARS AND COUNTING Dr. Norman C. Francis and First Lady Blanche Francis enjoy the festivities during a special campus reception celebrating the former’s longtime service to the University in a variety of administrative positions, including the last 39 as president. Xavier No.1 in Physics The latest report from the American Institute of Physics (AIP) on physics enrollments and degrees confirms that Xavier is first in the nation in awarding physics BS degrees to African Americans. The report, which covers the latest available three-year period (2003-05), shows Xavier with an annual average of 10 bachelor’s degrees. Benedict College (South Carolina) and Dillard are tied for second with an average of seven. All of the schools finishing in the Top 10 are either an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) or a predominately black college or university. Xavier Receives Low-Interest Federal Loans The University’s recovery efforts got a major boost when the U.S. Department of Education announced that Xavier would share in nearly $400 million in federal low-interest loans to the four Historically Black Colleges and Universities impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Xavier’s share of the award was $165 million. XU President Norman Francis said the loans will have longterm benefits for the university, noting that the funds will greatly impact XG Spring 2008 3 Current Events, News and O ther Happenings at Xavier Xavier’s future renovation and construction projects. The HBCU Capital Financing Program, which is financing the four loans, is a 10-year-old program designed to provide access to low-cost funds to help schools finance or refinance the repair, renovation and construction of classrooms, laboratories, libraries, dormitories, instructional equipment or research facilities. XU Gets Nod in 2008 “Best Colleges” Guides The university has once again received the endorsement of two prominent, annual college rating publications. Xavier was singled out as one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education by The Princeton Review, in the 2008 edition of its annual guide, “The Best 366 Colleges.” The university also garnered inclusion in U.S. News and World Report as one of “America’s Best Colleges” in the 2008 edition of its widely-read and popular annual college guide. Xavier was ranked 36th on the publication’s list of the “Best Universities - Master’s” from the southern region of the United States. XU Ranks High in Diverse Issues Report A special report by Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine once again provides documentation of Xavier’s success in a number of academic disciplines. In its annual “Top 100 Undergraduate Degree Producers” issue, the magazine shows XU once again ranking first in the nation in the number of African American students earning baccalaureate degrees in two areas, the biological and biomedical sciences, as well as the physical sciences. Xavier is far ahead of the pack in both categories, graduating 165 students in the biological and biomedical sciences - more than twice that of second-place Howard University - and another 48 students in the physical sciences - more than 50 per cent higher than runner-up Florida A&M. 21 Damaged Properties Razed Xavier has demolished 18 of the 22 buildings that sustained 50 percent or more structural damage as a result of Hurricane Katrina flood waters. It took nearly two years to get permission from the city to do so - and only after discussing the University’s plans with neighborhood groups. All but one structure were in the area bounded by South Clark St., Drexel Dr., Pine St. and Howard Ave. Some of the buildings will be replaced, while other areas will serve as green space and preparation for future campus growth. The other building, which is across the Washington Ave. canal, was torn down to allow for more parking. XU Students Show Support at “Jena 6” Rally Nearly 200 Xavier students traveled more than five hours to Jena, La., where they joined the tens of thousands of other peaceful marchers from across the country who converged on the small Louisiana town for a rally protesting what they considered excessive charges filed against six African American Jena High School students XG Spring 2008 4 DEMOLITION MAN Workers take down the old Campus Security building on the corner of Pine and Drexel Drive - one of 18 heavily hurricane-damaged buildings the University demolished. Some of the buildings will be replaced, while other now-empty areas will be utilized for parking or to provide campus green space. Current Events, News and O ther Happenings at Xavier for beating a white classmate last December. The three busloads of Xavier students who made the trip said their presence at the rally was important because the case of the teens - commonly referred to as the “Jena 6” - highlights what they consider to be unequal treatment African Americans receive from the criminal justice system. “It was good to see that many African Americans show up in one place and be as peaceful as it was,” said Jovanne Patterson, a senior biology/ pre-med major from Kansas City, MO and president of the campus chapter of the NAACP, which along with the Student Government Association served as organizers of the bus trip.“It made a really good statement.” SOLIDARITY IN JENA Some of the nearly 200 XU students who traveled to Jena, La., to take part in a huge September 20 rally to demand justice for the “Jena 6” students, huddle together during the long bus ride. Safety First: A Campus Priority As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and welfare of students, faculty and staff, the University recently unveiled two more safety measures designed to alert the campus community and the proper campus authorities in the event of any emergencies that may occur. First up is the Emergency Alert Notification System (EMANS), a mass notification device that can send a warning alarm to some 87 units that have been installed at key locations around the campus. The University has also installed five “Code Blue” outdoor telephone stations around campus. These mechanisms allow pedestrian students or other campus visitors who may be in danger to use these call boxes to communicate an emergency directly to campus police and be visible on camera while a unit is dispatched to the scene. The two newest emergency communication tools are meant to supplement those already in place including the E2 Campus text-messaging system, which has been active since March 2007. Math Gets Grant to Study Developmental Programs The Mathematics Department has been awarded a three-year, $800,000 grant from the Louisiana State Board of Regents to redesign and evaluate the developmental mathematics program. The Department’s focus on Developmental Mathematics is aimed at improving retention of students in science and math disciplines. The grant will significantly enhance the complex set of instructional assessment and pedagogical tools that are necessary to address the needs of students who lack adequate background in mathematics to enroll in a college credit course. Carnegie Commits Millions to XU, New Orleans CARNEGIE GRANT Vartan Gregorian, President of Carnegie Corporation of New York, chats with Meagan Minor, the reigning Miss Xavier and a PharmD. major from Baton Rouge, La. following an education forum hosted by the University during which he announced $12 million in grants - including $4 million for Xavier - in support of higher education in New Orleans. Xavier has received a $4 million grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York as part of a much larger $12 million commitment to higher education in New Orleans. Carnegie President Vartan Gregorian, speaking at an education forum hosted by the University, said the corporation’s investment in the city’s intellectual infrastructure - e.g., its institutions of higher education and K-12 teacher pool - is intended to underscore the importance of education to the city’s economic revitalization. The $4 million grant will allow Xavier to recruit new and retain current faculty while also ensuring the availability of adequate student financial assistance. XG XG Spring 2008 5 Improving the Freshman Experience FFirst i r s t YYear e a r SStudents t u d e n t s BBenefit e n e f i t ffrom ro m UUniversity’s n i v e r s i t y New Approach S everal months prior to the start of the Fall 2007 semester, the Enjoying their freshman experience are: (front, L-R) Jennifer Pellittieri, Tamorah Hawthorne and Chanel Perry; (back row) Roialle Edwards, Miranda Raiford and Diandria Lafayette. University launched an important initiative aimed at improving the first-year college experience of its new freshmen. It was designed with three key objectives in mind: to provide new students with the skills and support they need to be successful college students, to enhance their academic and professional development, and to help them understand their role and mission as Xavier students. The expectation was that such an effort would translate into an easier transition from high school to college for the students themselves, and, as a result, improve the University’s overall retention and graduation rates. Since the 662 members of the freshman class of ’07 are the first test-case of the new initiative, any real analysis of the program’s true effectiveness will have to wait until the end of the spring semester, and to a greater extent, when the class begins graduating in 2011. But some eight months deep into the program, the consensus seems to be that the initiative is indeed achieving some of its desired goals, although some fine-tuning may still be in order. Such an assessment comes as no surprise to those entrusted with making the program work. “We knew going into this initiative that we would be dealing with a work in progress, that it would take time to evolve into what we were really looking for,” said Dr. Ken Boutte, dean of the University’s new Freshman Studies program. “But even at this juncture we can definitely see that we are moving in the right direction.” XG Spring 2008 6 Since being named dean last July, Boutte, himself a ’76 XU grad, has been working closely with academic departments and other campus offices to develop a unique freshman year experience. The result was the introduction of a new summer reading component and changes to the University’s traditional freshman orientation week and the first-year curriculum. A pair of alumni parents are proud to have their roommate daughters follow them to their alma mater: (L to R) John Bovastro ‘88, India Keys, Felice Sanders Keys ‘86 & ‘89, and Janice Knight-Cooper ‘86 & ‘96, Lauren Cooper, Brent Cooper ‘84. Improving the freshman experience The first Xavier academic requirement now facing incoming freshmen is a summer reading assignment: The Paradox of Choice, a best-selling book focusing on the concept of making the right choices. “These are young adults, many of whom will be making independent choices without parental guidance or influence for the first time in their lives,” said Boutte, explaining the book selection. “There is, of course, a proper method for making correct choices and this book provides a catalyst for discussion.” “Faculty and staff who are regularly engaged with the freshmen have made efforts to incorporate that theme into their respective disciplines and activities,” he added. “It has been gratifying to see the number of faculty who stepped up to the plate during this development process.” In an effort to get the new students (and their parents) quickly acclimated to college life, the New Student Orientation program, held the week before the start of fall semester classes, has been expanded to ten days and now includes a three-day parent segment. “It’s important for the students to have fun during orientation, but what we are most interested in is ensuring they are properly transitioned to Xavier and New Orleans,” said Kawana Coulon, coordinator of orientation and leadership programs. She noted that her staff and the fifteen student leaders of the Peer Dean Planning Committee worked hard to not only get the freshmen up-to-speed in a hurry, but also to keep their parents informed. “We recognize that parents are an integral part of a student’s success,” said Coulon. “Parents were very engaged during the three days they were here and many commented that they left feeling comfortable with their son or daughter’s decision.” Informational sessions introduce new students to essential University policies and procedures, while counseling workshops address a wide variety of personal and social issues. In addition, students are schooled in some fundamental skills which the University deems essential to a successful first year in college, such as time management, test-taking skills and knowing how to read a syllabus. Current Xavier students – part of the Peer Deans group – welcome newcomers to campus. “Some students come to Xavier having never seen a syllabus, while others have no concept of time management,” said Boutte. “We don’t want them to be shocked on their first day of class.” This fall’s freshman class also spent a lot more of orientation interacting with the faculty and staff of their respective academic departments than had any of their predecessors. “In reviewing previous years, it became quite apparent that orientation was lacking in some academic aspects,” said Boutte, noting, for example, that in the past students had spent just one hour with their departments. That provided little time for any meaningful student evaluation, counseling and scheduling. XG Spring 2008 Nevertheless, the social aspect was not ignored either – a fact not lost on the freshmen themselves. 7 Improving the freshman experience Tamorah Hawthorne, a biology/pre-med major from Arlington, TX (Mansfield Summit High), and the newest in a long line of family members to attend Xavier, enjoyed her orientation experience, noting that it not only provided her with some insight into the ins-and-outs of college life, but also gave her a chance to meet her new classmates. “I especially enjoyed the group activities,” she said. “Breaking us down into smaller groups made it easier to get to know people and make new friends.” Chanel Perry, a biology/pre-med major from Memphis, TN (East High School), who got an early start on her XU career and her chemistry requirements by participating in the Howard Hughes Summer Program, agreed. “I thought the flag groups were one of the best aspects of orientation,” she said. “My group leaders really made me feel at home and made everything much more fun.” Dr. Kenneth Boutte, dean of Freshman Studies, patiently answers questions from parents and students. The special attention that the freshmen received that first week didn’t stop when classes began. In addition to an extensive monitoring and mentoring process which has been implemented to track the progress of each freshman, the first-year experience now includes a non-credit fall Freshman Seminar course (FRSM 1000) which is an integral part of every freshman schedule. More than just an orientation course, the new one-hour a week seminar course covers a wide variety of topics developed by teams of faculty and integrated into the entire academic experience. Important study, time-management and test-taking skills are re-emphasized, while students are also invited to investigate ways to improve their own physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Like most of the freshmen, Miranda Raiford, a chemistry/pre-pharmacy major from New Orleans (Cabrini High), found the seminars very helpful. “I thought they did a good job of making sure we understood the academic policies and procedures that were important to know,” she said. “The sessions on time management and study skills were also eye-opening.” “Most freshmen are very lacking in time management skills,” agreed Perry. “During the seminars we discussed ways to manage your time and still have enough time to have fun or free time. I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned to my own lifestyle.” Hawthorne pointed out that the seminars provide a good refresher course for many of the concepts covered during that hectic first week on campus. “There was so much going on during orientation that I couldn’t absorb it all,” she said. The seminar course also introduces a long line of guest speakers, who share their real-life knowledge of the skills and behaviors that breed academic and professional success. Many freshmen found particular value in this aspect of the seminars. “I enjoyed hearing about the personal experiences of the guest speakers,” said Jennifer Pellittieri, a chemistry/pre-pharmacy major from New Orleans (Mount Carmel Academy). “It was good to hear someone else talk about some of the things we’re experiencing and other things we could expect, and see how they handled them.” XG Spring 2008 8 Last, but not least, the seminars offer newcomers an opportunity to become familiar with Xavier’s history and mission. Making new friends. Improving the freshman experience “It pains me to say that there are seniors on this campus today who think Xavier’s colors are black and gold, and others who don’t know what the initials ‘S.B.S.’ stand for,” said Boutte. “I think it is important students understand our history and appreciate the unique culture that exists here – in other words, what it means to be a Xavierite.” Boutte said he has a cadre of students whom he has “tapped” from time to time to get their opinions on their freshman year experience. He said their comments have been invaluable in helping school officials evaluate the successes and failures of the program. An official survey of the entire freshman class is also being undertaken. “What we are finding is that students seem to have more knowledge about basic university procedures, have picked up some college survival skills, and have shown marked improvement in time management and note-taking than in the past,” he said. Freshmen are taking a follow-up seminar non-credit class (FRSM 1100) this spring that will complete the freshman cycle. While the fall seminar was more lectureoriented and informative in content, the spring seminar is more interactive. Freshman Milo Barry from Baltimore, Md, gets check-in instructions from Richard Sanchez. On to the next activity. During the spring seminar, students will be responsible for creating and developing a course portfolio. Journal entries and themes will be components of the portfolio, allowing students to have more opportunity to improve their writing skills. A service-learning component is also planned. “The first spring semester can be the best of times and the worst of times for freshmen,” said Boutte. “Those who have done well academically in the fall are starting to feel confident about themselves, while those who did not are having second thoughts about their choice of majors and are looking for some guidance. ”One of the major differences in the new 1100 course is that there will be 16 sections offered, with no more than 40 students in each class. During the fall, there were only three sections with more than 200 students in each. All courses will be taught by College of Arts and Science faculty, with a total of 18 faculty members and 10 staff actively involved in the design and delivery of the seminars. L ooking further down the line, Boutte and the Freshman Planning Committee are busy addressing another issue that confronts freshmen: remedial courses, e.g., non-credit developmental courses for students who are not academically prepared for the rigors of college-level courses, particularly in such core areas as English and mathematics. One idea on the table is offering students an opportunity to fulfill their developmental course requirements during the summer before they tackle the full course load of the fall semester. That scenario might include implementation of a summer freshman orientation program. On the other hand, the English Department has already presented a proposal to the Academic Council for a special course that would bridge the gap between non-credit “developmental” courses and lower-level credit courses. The Mathematics Department is studying similar approaches. XG Spring 2008 “This could ultimately eliminate the need for developmental courses,” said Boutte. “It would naturally require a little more time and effort on the student’s part, but it would give them a chance to earn credit towards graduation.”XG 9 Faculty SPOTLIGHT Forever Faithful: Sister Grace Mary Flickinger, SBS D uring her many trips around the country, Sister Grace Mary Flickinger, SBS, is often asked by representatives from other colleges and universities just what it would take to get her to join their faculty. Her answer is always the same: “You’d have to move Xavier here.” And that’s just the answer one would expect, for no matter where Flickinger finds herself – teaching in the classroom, cheering at a basketball game, participating in a national academic or athletics conference, or just kneeling in silent prayer – Xavier is always foremost on her mind. It is safe to say that anyone who has met her during her 40 years as a professor (and often times chair) of biology and academic coordinator of athletics, is painfully aware of her devotion to the University. She unabashedly evokes the Xavier name and its accomplishments to anyone within earshot: prospective students, fellow educators, athletics administrators, or representatives from national organizations and foundations. But it is among her current and former students, whom she has pushed relentlessly over the years to greater academic and athletic achievements, that she is most appreciated. Flickinger admits that when she first arrived at XU in 1968 (after teaching high school for some 13 years) she was intimidated by the prospect of “teaching all those smart college students.” But her confidence got a quick boost when she realized the students were just as afraid of her as she was of them. Mutual respect has been the mantra ever since. Flickinger said that while students have changed over the years, the changes are only on the surface. Fundamentally, she says, they are still the same. “Twenty years ago students would get quiet when a teacher walked in the room and they stood up to ask questions,” she recalled. “That doesn’t happen any more – and they dress quite differently – but for the most part Xavier students are respectful, want to learn, and have a great social sense, which has always been the hallmark of XU students.” “There is a special spirit among Xavier students, and our alumni carry it with them wherever they go,” she said. XG Spring 2008 10 Sister Grace Mary Flickinger shares some memories with Dr. Ernest Jackson ‘75 and Dr. Sabrina Echols-Elliott ’92 during Alumni Homecoming. “There is a special spirit among Xavier students, and our alumni carry it with them wherever they go.” —Sister Grace Mary Flickinger, SBS Sister Grace Mary Flickinger , SBS XU administrators and other representatives, who meet with alumni across the country, said that invariably someone will ask about Sister Grace Mary. Sears-Roebuck Foundation’s Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award. Her impact goes far beyond the classroom, however. “I get messages from alums more than you might imagine, and I get excited when I hear the good things they have accomplished. I brag on them all the time.” Much sought after for her collective college teaching experience and knowledge, she has been active in the SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) reaffirmation process for schools around the country. In fact, she’ll be making her ninth such accreditation review visit this spring. During her long tenure, Flickinger, who now teaches embryology and biology honors courses, has seen Xavier experience astonishing growth, particularly the sciences and in her own biology department. She recalls that there was one senior biology major when she first arrived on campus; when seven freshmen joined the department the next year the faculty was flabbergasted. Flickinger rightly gives much of the credit for that growth to pre-med advisor Dr. JW Carmichael and the Summer Science Academy programs that he pioneered in the early 1980s. Designed primarily as a vehicle to better prepare high school students for college work, the programs had the welcome side effect of spurring tremendous interest in the sciences. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, the biology department had a record enrollment of 1,100. Now, with the overall student population hovering at about 75 percent of its pre-Katrina numbers, biology remains the largest single department with about 700 biology majors. Flickinger’s own role in science education here at Xavier was recognized in 1990 when she was named recipient of the “It’s helpful to have someone who knows what SACS review teams are looking for when it comes time for Xavier to undergo its own accreditation process,” she said. “It also gives us some insight into what other schools are doing and compare ourselves. In comparison, more often than not we come out looking pretty good.” Equally impressive is her contribution to the university’s athletic program. Spurred by a lifelong interest in sports, her involvement began simply enough in the early ‘80s when she developed a card system to keep track of the academic progress of athletes for then athletics director Denny Alexander. That led to her becoming Xavier’s academic coordinator/faculty athletic representative and an active role in the leadership of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In 1988, when the NAIA changed its governance structure, Flickinger was selected to the influential Council of Faculty Athletic Representatives. In 1998 she was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame for meritorious service and in 2005 the organization presented her the prestigious Wally Schwartz Faculty Athletics Representative of the Year Award. She is still deeply involved, currently serving on NAIA’s National Coordinating Committee. F lickinger, who says she will retire when her teaching days at the University are over, confides that she thought that time had come prematurely in August 2005 when she rode out Hurricane Katrina in the Convent and saw first-hand the blow that Xavier had suffered. “I did a lot of praying for Xavier and for Dr. (Norman) Francis over the next few months, because I knew the task facing them was great,” she said. “Xavier’s recovery since then has been truly remarkable. I see plenty of good days ahead – and I plan to be here to enjoy them.” XG XG Spring 2008 Student-athletes Mark Stewart and Alfred Williams give Flickinger their undivided attention after a Gold Rush basketball game. 11 Student SPOTLIGHT Shaun Dumas Undaunted by Life’s Obstacles By Ed Cassiere G reat victories are part of Shaun Dumas’ relatively young life, but so are tragic losses. By his 22nd birthday in October, he had grieved over two of the most talked-about events of this millennium. During Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, his family’s house in New Orleans experienced catastrophic flooding, and Dumas lost nearly all his possessions. Then less than 15 months later, his oldest brother, Joseph, was killed at age 25 while serving in the U.S. Army during the Iraq War. But Dumas, a business management major and the starting point guard on the Gold Rush’s nationally ranked basketball team, is handling life as he does on the court. He’s pressing forward quickly, watching for openings and making good things happen. “I had a lot of doubts about Xavier coming back. I almost left for good.” Dumas is inspired by his brother every time he enters The Barn, Xavier’s 70-year-old gymnasium. “I get this feeling that I don’t want to let my brother down,” Dumas said. “The feeling takes place when I’m on the court. I always play like my brother’s watching me, and he’ll beat me up if I don’t play good.” By that measure, Dumas hasn’t even been bruised. He has excelled in his first three seasons of Xavier basketball, ranking among the national leaders in steals and assists. He was named the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2004-05, selected Louisiana Small College Player of the Year as a sophomore, and earned both All-Conference and NAIA All-American honors as well. During that stretch, the Gold Rush have reached the NAIA National Tournament for a record three years in a row. “Shaun is a special young man,” Xavier Coach Dannton Jackson said. “He has experienced tremendous hardships away from basketball, but even if you spent a lot of time with him, you’d never know it. He’s done an admirable job of handling everything that’s been thrown at him, and it’s made him an even better person.” “Wakeup call” has been used frequently to describe Hurricane Katrina, the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Dumas got a wakeup call, and he answered it. As a result you’ll find Dumas at City Cathedral Church on Wednesday nights, where he and Xavier teammate Ryan DeRousselle serve as leaders in Life Group, a youth organization which offers Bible study and peer counseling for ages 18-25. “The youth were on fire for God over there,” is what Dumas said he discovered after accepting DeRousselle’s invitation to attend a service at City Cathedral. “I did not go to church regularly before the storm. God has been so good to me, to all of us. I decided it was time to stop playing with God and give Him all of me. I asked to be rebaptized at City Cathedral. I wanted to start a new life of living for Christ.” XG Spring 2008 12 Owen McManus Jr., City Cathedral’s pastor, said Dumas “has personally discipled 10-12 people in the last year. Shaun is very passionate and very excited about spreading his faith. He’s taken his responsibilities very seriously.” Shawn Dumas dribbles around a defender. Dumas outside his damaged New Orleans home. For more proof of Dumas’ change of heart, look no farther than his Nissan Maxima. Gone are his rap and hip-hop CDs. Contemporary Christian artists drive him these days. “It’s good music,” Dumas said. “I enjoy it. The music has good messages.” The Dumas family house, on Music Street in New Orleans’ Gentilly neighborhood, took on as much as 12 feet of water during the flooding which followed Hurricane Katrina. “My dad said the water settled at eight feet,” Dumas said. “We had water in the house for three weeks.” Dumas never imagined it could be that bad. The thought of home contained so many pleasant memories, such as shooting hoops in his front yard until 2 a.m. during the summer, or walking three minutes to a convenience store to enjoy a hot sausage or shrimp po-boy – “Lettuce and mayo, no tomatoes,” Dumas insists. The flooding washed away his many athletic awards. His first car, a 2001 Nissan Sentra, a gift from an uncle, did not survive either. Dumas and his parents evacuated New Orleans in advance of the hurricane, but the forecasters’ predictions made little impact on him. “I packed one pair of underwear, one pair of shoes and three shirts,” he said. “My parents packed a little more. I thought it was another scare. I thought (the hurricane) would curve like it always does. I just looked at it as a road trip. It really was a road trip.” Dumas’ parents, Claude and Bernadine, eventually relocated to Donaldsonville, La., about 65 miles west of New Orleans, and bought a house. Claude commutes to New Orleans for his supervisor’s job with the city’s sewerage and water board. Bernadine commutes to Baton Rouge, about 40 miles northwest of Donaldsonville, to her job as a medical transcriptionist. They’re still paying the mortgage on their New Orleans home, but Shaun says they aren’t moving back. “I had a lot of doubts about Xavier coming back,” Dumas said.“I almost left for good. I was going to see Coach Jackson one day to get him to sign my release papers, but coach and A.J. (teammate Alfred Williams) talked me out of it. A.J. and (teammate) Mark (Stewart) were coming back, and Coach Jackson could’ve easily left, but he stayed. So I felt a sense of commitment.” Dumas intends to receive a Xavier diploma, play professionally -- he attracted rave reviews in August at the adidas Basketball Experience when he competed against peers from the United States and abroad -- and return to New Orleans to start his own sporting goods business. The latter choice, he says, is easy. Doubts no longer exist. “The city needs a boost for the economy,” Dumas said. “Katrina really knocked a lot of air out of us, you know. Plus I could be close to my church.” Dumas has experienced his share of ups and downs during his Xavier tenure, but he’s looking ahead and staying positive. “As bad as I had it, I know someone had it 10 times worse than me,” he said. “If I feel sorry for myself, I’d be letting my past get the best of me. Nothing ever stays the same. You either get better or worse. “Losing my brother was harder to accept than the hurricane. Material things are replaceable. Lives are not. After my brother died I didn’t think about the hurricane any more. I knew complaining wasn’t going to bring anything back. I just sucked it up and continued to press forward.” XG XG Spring 2008 “I hope we can fix the house and my parents will give the house to me and my brother Eric,” Dumas said. As a result of the hurricane, Xavier canceled intercollegiate athletics for the 2005-06 academic year. And though the school successfully reopened in January 2006, Dumas wrestled with doubt. A few NCAA Division I schools contacted Dumas and expressed interest in him transferring. The offers were tempting. 13 Alumni SPOTLIGHT Pharmacist Lands on Her Feet in the Big Apple A s you might expect, native New Orleanian Ruth Campbell “Cookie” Jean ’72 doesn’t have any fond memories of Hurricane Katrina. As the on-duty pharmacy manager for the crisis activation team at University Hospital on that fateful August day, she rode out the storm and then suffered through the brutal heat, darkness, confusion and sense of isolation all too common in the hellish days that followed the levee breaks. In fact, the images of patients just struggling to stay alive, and her fellow health care specialists trying to maintain their professionalism and their own sanity, still haunt her today. Her personal life was not spared either. Her home in the Bayou St. John area took on some eight feet of water, and she soon found herself laid off from the job she had held for 30 years. Yet Jean is also one of those New Orleanians who has landed on her feet, albeit in another town and another venue. And to a good degree, it was her Xavier education that helped make it happen. Today Jean is serving as pharmacy manager at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, one of the largest and most comprehensive university hospitals in the world. The home to leading specialists in every field of medicine, privately-owned New YorkPresbyterian is composed of two renowned medical centers (Columbia University Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical Center) and affiliated with two Ivy League medical institutions (Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and Weill Medical College of Cornell University). She lives with her husband Nelson ‘72 in a 116th St. apartment located in the heart of New York City, just blocks from famous Central Park and close to one of her twin daughters, Dr. Patrice Jean ‘93, who just recently gave birth to the newest of her four grandchildren. All things considered, life is good. “New Yorkers were extremely nice and very supportive when we were struggling to get our lives back together right after Katrina,” said Jean, who was originally evacuated to San Antonio (Texas) with other University Hospital employees some five days after the storm and eventually found her way to her daughter’s home in the Big Apple. “Now that we have settled in here, we are quite happy.” It was a Xavier connection – and her pharmacy degree and experience – that made the transition much smoother than one might expect. When it became obvious that returning to New Orleans was not an option – University Hospital was not coming back anytime soon – she started looking for a job in the New York area. XG Spring 2008 14 She was astonished to see the number of openings for pharmacists in the city, and was even more so when she stumbled upon another Xavier grad, Vickie Ferdinand Powell ’80.The two had never met before, but Powell, site director for NY-Presbyterian, was impressed enough with Jean’s credentials to offer her immediate employment which, oddly enough, entailed doing pretty much the same job she had done for years in New Orleans, albeit on a slightly larger scale. Ruth “Cookie” Jean ‘72 Jean said the relative ease with which she was able to find employment in New York illustrates something she has been preaching to young people for years – that pharmacy is truly a great profession. Ruth “Cookie” Jean Lacking a license to practice pharmacy in New York, Jean was able to call upon other connections she had made while serving as one of the first African American females on the Louisiana State Board of Pharmacy to get the NY licensing process fast-tracked. She was thus able to start working right away. Now as pharmacy manager at Presbyterian, she supervises a staff of more than 200 and provides the pharmaceutical needs of more than 1,500 patients. She also directly monitors the hospital’s controlled substances and IV preparation programs. “I am fortunate to be working in such a dynamic medical center,” said Jean, pointing out that Presbyterian, as a private medical center, unlike the public hospital she worked for in New Orleans, has access to more resources and is not shy about spending money on healthcare facilities, research and staff development. “This is a pretty awesome place.” Considering her original evacuation destination was Atlanta, Ga., where her other daughter, Dr. Raynice Jean-Sigur ‘93 resides, things have indeed worked out for the best. At the time, Raynice was already hosting some 28 other evacuees, including some Xavier students. “We obviously weren’t going there,” laughed Jean. Thank God for twins! Jean said the relative ease with which she was able to find employment in New York illustrates something she has been preaching to young people for years – that pharmacy is truly a great profession. “I tell them that you can always find a job,” said Jean, who was instrumental in helping arrange the first-ever pharmacy rotation location for Xavier students (when University Hospital was still known as Hotel Dieu) and also served as an adjunct professor at the University. “Even more importantly, a pharmacy degree opens up a diverse array of career fields. Pharmacists can choose among their interests, be it in hospital or clinical care, retail dispensing, sales, management and academics.” Despite her relocation to the north, Jean stays in close touch with her hometown and her alma mater. She is a regular visitor to the city, keeping tabs on the slow but steady rebuilding of the home she hopes one day to return to. Ruth Jean ’72 (third from left) with members of her New York Presbyterian Hospital pharmacy staff. Her love for Xavier has not waned either. Although she is no longer able to actively volunteer to help with the university’s fundraising events such as the annual Phon-a-thon, she has religiously maintained her financial support. She and Nelson are charter members of the Xavier 500 Alumni Leadership Initiative, a unique group of individuals who have pledged at least $10,000 to their alma mater over a five-year period to provide for student scholarships. XG Spring 2008 “Xavier remains very special to my whole family,” said Jean, pointing out that her husband, their two children and her husband’s mother and father are all Xavier graduates. XG 15 Honor Roll of Donors From the Vice President for Institutional Advancement I am indeed honored, humbled, and delighted to serve Xavier University of Louisiana as its new Vice President for Institutional Advancement. Under the steady and confident leadership of Dr. Norman C. Francis, Xavier remains committed to ensuring that students are afforded the opportunity to earn a quality education in a nurturing environment – an environment that, thanks to the countless number of dedicated faculty, staff, alumni and friends, continues to prepare students for life’s challenges. And having survived and rebuilt the entire Xavier campus following the devastating destruction of Hurricane Katrina, the Xavier community is both well-tested and uniquely qualified to overcome challenges. In this, the Spring 2008 issue of Xavier Gold, we are resuming our annual practice of highlighting those supporters and donors who made a financial contribution to Xavier University. The gifts highlighted on the following pages are from our post-Katrina recovery period and total more than $23.6 million. Every gift, regardless of its size or designation, has had a tremendous impact on our recovery efforts! Your donation helps keep the dream alive for another generation of Xavierites. Our recovery has positioned Xavier to continue to be the beacon of hope and opportunity that so many of our students, parents, and business partners have come to expect. Xavier’s return to excellence is a remarkable tribute to our University leadership, to our professional faculty and staff, to our volunteers, and to the pride that our alumni and donors have for this University. We know now more than ever that people love and believe in Xavier and where it is headed. The donor honor roll, which begins on page 19, includes contributions that were received during the post-Katrina period from September 1, 2005 to December 31, 2006. While we have chosen to highlight this particular 16-month timeframe for many reasons, the most compelling reason is that these are the donors who responded to our immediate needs during the critical rebuilding phase post-Katrina. Their generosity allowed the University to repair and renovate every single building on campus and to reopen and resume classes four months following the storm. These individuals, alumni, foundations, organizations, and corporations were truly our first responders, and we are privileged to be able to publicly show our thanks and sincerest appreciation. XG Spring 2008 16 Our donors are, without question, truly amazing. Many were current New Orleanians and Xavierites who were victims of Katrina themselves, yet they continued to support the university even in the midst of being displaced to cities throughout Dr. Kenneth St. Charles chats with a student on campus. Honor Roll of Donors the United States. Still others were first time Xavier donors who had never even stepped foot on the Xavier campus, yet their belief in our educational mission spurred their philanthropic support and unwavering generosity. And we received overwhelming support from foundations and corporations who had supported Xavier in past years. They were compelled to seek us out to offer their financial assistance because they knew that the Xavier we all have come to love was too important to not return. H.E. Nassar Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, Qatar Ambassador to the U.S., meets with a host of Xavier students during a follow-up visit to the campus. Qatar has donated $12.5 million dollars to XU to expand the College of Pharmacy and another $5 million for student scholarships. Our donors are, without question, truly amazing.... We know now more than ever that people love and believe in Xavier and where it is headed. D The generous acts of kindness shown to Xavier of course were not only financial. Colleges and universities throughout the country enrolled our displaced students to ensure that these young people would not be forced to interrupt their academic pursuits. Additionally, nearly 50 Universities raised funds, donated equipment and resources, and provided our faculty with research opportunities which proved priceless and immeasurable. Whatever their reason for choosing to financially support us, it is our donors and friends who are the real heroes in the recovery miracle that is Xavier University. And it is our students who are the ultimate beneficiaries. On behalf of President Francis, my VP colleagues, our devoted Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, the Xavier faculty and staff, and our students, we want to thank each of you for your generosity, prayers, and continued support during these past two years. Without you, Xavier simply could not continue to be the highly respected university that it has become. XG At Xavier since 2005, St. Charles previously served the university as Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives. Before that, he served seven years as the Area Development Director for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) New Orleans office, where he was responsible for raising more than $19 million during his tenure there. St. Charles also served as Senior Development Officer at Loyola University, Alumni Affairs Director at St. Augustine High School and positions in human resources and finance at Entergy Corporation. A New Orleans native, St. Charles is a graduate of St. Augustine High School and holds a bachelors degree from Loyola, and an MBA and Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of New Orleans. He is a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve. He is married to the former Lori Robinson and has two teenage daughters, Taylor and Kennedy, who attend Xavier University Preparatory High School. XG Spring 2008 R. KENNETH ST. CHARLES has been serving as Vice President for Institutional Advancement since his promotion to the post by President Norman Francis in June 2007. St. Charles is responsible for overseeing the university’s fundraising activities through the offices of Advancement Services, Alumni Relations, Campaigns, Development, and University and Media Relations. “Xavier is extremely fortunate to have Dr. St. Charles in this role,” said Francis. “He brings to this position years of experience specifically related to the institutional advancement area. The national search confirmed the significant value Xavier gains in his appointment.” 17 Class Giving Summary September 1, 2005 through December 31, 2006 XG Spring 2008 18 Class Year # of Donors 1933 1935 1936 1937 1938 1939 1940 1941 1942 1943 1944 1945 1946 1947 1948 1949 1950 1951 1952 1953 1954 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 Other Grand Total 1 1 4 3 2 3 10 7 7 8 10 10 10 20 17 17 23 47 33 29 23 34 49 44 29 37 31 38 26 25 18 22 17 20 34 32 33 44 38 32 29 36 29 28 32 28 32 27 32 25 32 31 34 34 41 36 39 32 29 47 25 50 51 33 36 25 28 41 41 22 36 1 5 30 1,965 Contributions 300 1,000 3,500 2,200 500 1,550 1,080 2,550 4,350 5,599 1,800 2,450 11,539 18,250 7,188 29,750 8,485 36,245 122,752 96,578 29,425 50,856 50,805 28,325 11,985 28,689 23,233 32,500 24,627 17,500 2,635 8,025 18,219 10,097 17,229 28,914 9,965 21,950 12,560 11,250 12,281 18,125 9,132 16,366 7,220 16,750 10,116 7,080 5,530 16,644 9,697 8,255 9,058 28,944 10,289 3,690 6,582 9,930 4,434 9,795 3,400 9,585 12,619 5,909 9,970 3,975 2,845 4,050 5,991 4,697 5,270 200 250 17,268 $1,101,402 Class % 5% 2% 7% 5% 3% 3% 10% 6% 6% 8% 15% 14% 16% 19% 18% 13% 13% 26% 22% 19% 17% 21% 29% 21% 17% 20% 24% 26% 20% 19% 17% 21% 17% 15% 22% 19% 16% 19% 15% 13% 13% 12% 12% 9% 13% 10% 12% 11% 12% 9% 12% 13% 11% 14% 11% 12% 11% 9% 7% 9% 6% 9% 8% 8% 7% 5% 5% 6% 7% 4% 8% 0% 2% n/a 11% Honor Roll of Donors Honor Roll of Donors The following report recognizes donors who made gifts to Xavier during the post-Katrina period from September 1, 2005 to December 31, 2006. Stroger, Jr. JOHN STROGER JR. ’52 was honored as the university’s top alumni at the annual Alumni Homecoming Gala, just two months before he died at age 78 following a lengthy illness. Stroger, who had recently retired as president of the Board of Commissioners of Illinois’ Cook County (Chicago), was unable to attend the event due to illness, but his daughter, Yonnie Lynn Clark, accepted the 2007 Victor H. Labat Alumnus of the Year award for him on his behalf. A powerful Democratic political figure in Chicago for decades, Stroger rose to the level of chief executive of one of the most significant counties in the nation, a multi-city area with a larger population and bigger budget than 35 states. He presided over a workforce of 23,000. The billion dollar Cook County hospital was named in his honor. Stroger was recognized for his extraordinary dedication and service to his alma mater. He served as both a member and chair of the University’s Board of Trustees. He gave of his time and resources to the many endeavors of the Chicago Alumni Chapter. A faithful financial supporter of the university, he and his wife Yonnie were charter members of the Xavier 500 Alumni Leadership Initiative, a select group of individuals who have committed $10,000 or more over a five-year period to support student scholarships. This past year, at the request of his family, his John H. Stroger Jr. Charitable Foundation contributed $500,000 to establish the John H. Stroger, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund for deserving Xavier students. XG Spring 2008 40 The annual Homecoming Gala drew a sell-out crowd of more than 460 attendees to the University Center Ballroom. Class Agents for the 14 special five-year reunion classes presented the university with gifts totaling $620,693. The Class of ’52 led the way with 21 individual donors contributing $392,275. She has, however, taken that devotion even one step further – physically recruiting prospective new students on the streets of Harlem, N.Y. The scene was the 2007 National Historic Black College Fair and Expo in August, where Crawford and a cadre of other Xavierites she enlisted talked up the university and handed out assorted recruiting materials to more than 200 student prospects and high school guidance counselors, eventually collecting more than 100 information request forms which she promptly forwarded to the Admissions Office. RECRUITING FOR XU: Terlenda Crawford ‘07 mans the Prospective students and Xavier recruiting booth she set up with Veronica Mitchell counselors weren’t the only ‘46 at the Black College Fair in Harlem, N.Y. ones to flock to the table. Keila Simons ’05 saw the table and happily volunteered her services. Two current XU students at home for the summer – junior history major Antoine Flateau and his sister Maria, a senior business major, also came over to help. Crawford also found a willing ally in Veronica Mitchell ’46, whose contact info she found while flipping through a copy of Xavier Gold magazine. Euphoric that a young alumnus was interested in recruiting for dear old XU, Mitchell herself became a prominent member of the booth staff. Another local alum, Maryse Holly ’06, found Crawford’s appeal on the internet and joined in on the effort as well. Crawford, who spent this past summer in New Orleans working as a sixth grade teacher for St. Peter Claver Elementary School’s Summer Witness Program, also taught piano at Xavier. She took advantage of her frequent visits to the campus to drop in on virtually every academic department, as well as Admissions, the Counseling/ Wellness Center, Institutional-Advancement and Student Services, to gather pamphlets and other informational materials about XU to distribute at the fair. In the end she had gathered so much stuff – more than 70 pounds of materials – that it cost her $80 out of her own pocket to ship it home. Armed with that, as well as a tent, an official XU banner, and the photo scrapbook and additional banners she and her younger sister put together, Crawford’s display made quite a splash at this year’s fair – much to the chagrin of competing colleges like Howard University and FAMU. “I enjoyed my time at the College Fair and hope to experience recruiting again,” said Crawford, who is now a pursuing her master’s degree at Michigan State University. Alumni recruiting is a trend that seems to be catching on. Crawford recently heard from a fellow mass communication grad, Holly Clay ’07, who participated with the local Alumni Chapter in a Black College Fair in Atlanta, Ga., and who reported a similar enthusiastic response from prospective students. Crawford’s display made quite a splash at this year’s fair. XG Spring 2008 41 alumni News Coca-Cola Company Elects Alexis M. Scott (’62) probably did not need the honorary degree that Xavier awarded him May, 12, 2007 at Commencement, less than four months before his unfortunate demise. But Xavier would have been remiss to deny this gentle artistic giant his honorary degree while he was still alive to appreciate it. All of us were touched deeply by Scott’s powerful art reflecting the dignity, strength and grace of Africans and African Americans. For more than four decades we were able to observe the passion and energy he brought into the studio and those Xavier classrooms filled with aspiring young artists. And, we witnessed his exceptional insight into the human condition. John Scott’s enormous lifetime body of work, created in almost every conceivable medium, rightfully earned him a national reputation as one of America’s most highly-acclaimed contemporary artists. His vibrantly colored, multi-layered prints and kinetic sculptures did much to heighten our awareness of the influence of African and Caribbean music and dance to our distinctly local traditions. His large-scale, three-dimensional works brighten the landscape and buildings of New Orleans and six other major U.S. cities, while his more poignant paintings, prints and sculptures are prominently displayed in both public museums and private art collections throughout the country. Often honored and celebrated, he was bestowed “Genius” status when the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship recognized him for his extraordinary originality and exceptional creativity. But we at Xavier already knew the greatness of our gentle giant, and how fortunate we were to have him here for so long. John Scott mentored generations of fine young artists, many of whom are professionally active as both artists and instructors today. He also inspired an appreciation of art in hundreds of non-art majors who only glimpsed his brilliance. But above all he instilled in all his students an appreciation of life and a deeper respect for their God. This was a man who prescribed to a simple creed – “Pass It On!” He acknowledged the debt he owed those upon whose shoulders he himself climbed, and he acted upon the obligation he felt to share his knowledge and blessings with others. It was a philosophy he demonstrated every day of his life. On Sept. 1, 2007 John T. Scott died following his lengthy and heroic battle to recover from his dual lung transplant surgeries. Truly, he will be missed. XG XG Spring 2008 50 The John T.
