Le Tematik began in 2010 as an ensemble for salsa and Cuban singers touring New York’s Tri State area, but quickly became a first-call ensemble. Calixto Oviedo is a Latin Grammy-nominated artist who has performed with numerous internationally-known artists including Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. He mixes Afro Cuban music with New Orleans jazz in Cuban Jazz Train’s ensemble of musicians. Image on Left: Joshua Rashaad McFadden “Man and Young Man, 2015” JOSHUA RASHAAD MCFADDEN “After Selma” Exhibit PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTIST JOSHUA RASHAAD MCFADDEN presents the award-winning collection, “After Selma.” It is a photographic reconsideration of the 1965 civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala. McFadden holds an MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta. Citizen was the winner of the 2015 Forward Prize for Best Collection, the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, the NAACP Image Award, the PEN Open Book Award and the LA Times Book Award for poetry. His plays are read and performed around the world and his films Zoot Suit and La Bamba are classics of the American Latinx cinema. Valdez has won numerous awards and recognitions and in 2007 was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre. laverne.edu/lyceum 9 Exhibition on View Artist Talk & Reception 10 laverne.edu/lyceum SONYA CLARK Feb 21 at 6 PM SONYA CLARK is chair of the craft and material studies department at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Richmond, Va. She credits her maternal grandmother, a tailor, for her passion for the discipline, which focuses on ceramics, glass, wood, fiber and metal. Clark has exhibited her work in more than 300 museums and galleries globally. She won an Art Prize Grand Jurors co-prize in 2014 and a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, among other honors. Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said Herrera’s poems “contain Whitman-esque multitudes that champion voices, traditions and histories, as well as a cultural perspective” serving to illuminate our larger American identity. Herrera wrote 30 books, including collections of poetry, prose, and short stories. Influenced by Allen Ginsberg, Luis Valdez and the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, Herrera writes passionately about social issues. TIMOTHY DURKOVIC LOS ANGELES BASED PIANIST TIMOTHY DURKOVIC is a soloist and chamber musician. He has won awards at the Los Angeles Liszt Competition, the Carmel Music Society Competition and the San Diego Duo Piano Competition. He served on the faculties of Long Beach City College, Orange County High School of the Arts and the University of La Verne and has performed and arranged music for clients including Christina Aguilera and Dignity Health. A 50-year retrospective Joella Mahoney is University of La Verne professor of art emerita, who helped develop the art department in 1964. She is known for large scale landscapes in oil, with her main motif being the Colorado Plateau. Oct 27 DAVID PAGEL at 6 PM Critic and Curator Lecture Abraham Campus Center, Ballroom A Reception Following at Tall Wall Space ACB Building RADIUS ABSTRACTUS, Augusto Sandroni David Pagel is an art critic who writes regularly for the Los Angeles Times and is also an adjunct curator at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York. Augusto Sandroni’s work has been exhibited at Oceanside Museum of Art, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art and Moloney Fine Art, Los Angeles. She began experimenting with the fusion of Indian classical music and western styles in the 1990s when she performed as a veena soloist in Hamilton, N.Y. She also sang for the feature film ‘The Guru’ and played veena for the IMAX film ‘Everest.’ J. JASON LAZARUS Emblem and Artifice: Withered Symbols of the War J. Jason Lazarus’s portfolio of photographs involves symbolism from World War II. His chemigrams are printed on kodabromide paper that expired five days before the Hiroshima bombing. The brutal memories of trauma are imprinted onto these artifacts of the war. He is a University of Alaska adjunct lecturer. The script is adapted from Claudia Rankine’s text by Stephen Sachs. The reading will be directed Shirley Jo Finney, who has directed acclaimed productions of Citizen in Los Angeles and South Carolina. He is the author of 13 books, a guest commentator for NPR affiliates and a New York University adjunct faculty member. Nov 17 MODEL UNITED NATIONS at 12 PM SPEAKER OF THE YEAR Abraham Campus Center, Ballroom A Dr. Luis Ernesto Derbez is President of Universidad de las Américas Puebla in Mexico, and has served as Secretary of Economy and Secretary of Foreign Relations. Dr. Derbez has consulted or served as a board member for organizations such as Ford Motor Co., Bombardier and the Mexican Institute of Water Technology. Jan 30 - SARAH CUSIMANO MILES March 24 SOLOMON’S HOUSE Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography Sarah Cusimano Miles serves as assistant professor of photography at Jacksonville State University, Alabama. Her still-life portfolio, “Solomon’s House,” explores items from the Alabama collections repository. Rochelle’s performances include the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony for Barack Obama, Prince’s Welcome to America Tour, and numerous network television appearances. He has toured Europe with Esperanza Spaulding, James Torme, hip hop pioneer RZA, Eric Darius, and De La Soul. April 3 - TENSIONS AND TRADITIONS May 26 IN CONTEXT Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography SHAWN KIRCHNER AND SINGERS Top Los Angeles professional choral singers will perform a full range of music by Shawn Kirchner, a composer, arranger and performer whose choral works are performed throughout the world. He is the pianist, organist and composer-inresidence at the La Verne Church of the Brethren. April 6 at 5 PM Interfaith Chapel This exhibition, tentatively titled “Tensions and Traditions in Context,” will develop as an advanced collaborative curatorial project organized by students and visiting professor of photography Stacey McCarroll Cutshaw. KEVIN MOFFETT: FICTION WRITER Kevin Moffett’s collection, “Permanent Visitors,” won the John Simmons Short Fiction Award, among other honors. His stories and essays have appeared in various journals including The Best American Short Stories and McSweeney’s. He has received the Nelson Algren Award, the Pushcart Prize, and a literature fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts. EVENTS SPRING 2017 April 19 DR. Trotter’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently with “New Work” at a Ruth Bachofner Gallery in Santa Monica in 2016. April 26 BHUTTO-ISPAHANI LECTURE at 12 PM The University of La Verne’s annual Abraham Campus Center, Ballroom A-D Benazir Bhutto and Ahmed Ispahani International Lectureship was established by alumnus and Trustee Paul Moseley in 2007 and features renowned speakers with expertise in international issues. It honors the legacy, leadership and courage of Benazir Bhutto, the 11th prime minister of Pakistan, and her cousin, Dr. Ahmed Ispahani, Professor of Business Administration and Economics at the university.
