The consequences are brutal. Not only is the child constantly in hospital for painful treatments, which can have serious side effects, but their parents and family will also bear a heavy burden. Life needs to go on for the other family members, but how? Caring for a very sick child is allconsuming, but what are the financial consequences of a parent who is not working, what about the other siblings that need to be taken care of? The adjustment is huge for the whole family. The impact is equally severe for children if cancer strikes a parent. Understandably and out of necessity, the child’s needs will be relegated to the needs of the patient/parent. They have seen a loved one in pain, their world has collapsed and their daily routine totally disrupted. At any age, feelings of fear and anger, guilt and sadness are difficult to deal with but for a child, it can have devastating consequences and lead to psychological problems later in life. The Cancer League for Children The Swiss Cancer League provides advice and assistance both for children with cancer and for children whose father or mother is affected. It funds research to improve cancer treatments for children and educates families in cancer prevention, such as in protecting your child from smoking and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Psychosocial and Psycho-Oncological Support Cantonal cancer leagues provide support for parents of sick children. They show them not only how to help their child cope with the disease but also how to organize their lives and how to continue the child’s education despite the cancer. Some cantonal league professionals may accompany the afflicted child during treatment and convalescence. Some cantonal leagues also have specialist clinics for the children with pediatric specialists in psychooncology, who work directly with young patients or help those children with an afflicted parent, helping them to deal with their emotions. Not all cantonal cancer leagues offer the same services. The extent and nature of the services depend largely on the financial resources of the organization. To continue to provide the very best overall support for these afflicted children, we urgently need more funds. Social and Financial Support for Families Cancer can cause difficulties in both social and financial aspects, for example when a parent has to stop working to care for the sick child. Cantonal leagues can provide support by organizing and funding childcare or transport to the hospital or even by engaging a housekeeper. Activity Weeks Children who have a family member with cancer often have the feeling that they have been left to fend for themselves and to face their fears and concerns alone. Spending time with other children who are going through the same trauma can be a valuable experience. The Swiss Cancer League offers them activity weeks in which they can relax a little and make friends. Research Funding The Swiss Cancer League funds patient-oriented research projects that aim to help sick children. Some are designed to improve treatments; others focus on the psychosocial consequences of childhood cancer. Leukemia, one of the most common childhood cancers, is the subject of special attention. Cancer Prevention The Swiss Cancer League is very active in promoting cancer prevention, highlighting the dangers of both passive and active smoking, making recommendations on a healthy diet and disseminating information on how to protect your child from harmful ultraviolet radiation. The League has developed teaching materials designed to help young parents and expectant fathers and mothers understand the dangers of smoking on the child’s health. 17 16 FBT Avocats SA Geneva | Paris www.fbt.ch Your contact: Frédérique Bensahel fbensahel@fbt.ch T. +41 22 849 60 40 FBT Attorneys-at-law is a dynamic law firm with offices in Geneva and Paris. People have forgotten the power of song, since the technology swept through, and how it carries. Coming from parents who are songwriters, that’s my No. 1 thing, really.” Running Still - Winston’s third album released in 2011, following Hobo in 2009 and his 2006 debut Make Way - is the album to which his whole life has been leading. Winston was raised by his parents in their small East Anglia hotel, which he describes as “Fawlty Towers, but with a family” -- with two bars and a ballroom, hosting a constant stream of musical, theatrical and comedy performers. He says he was the “cheerful” one of the four children, responding to his father’s coercion to entertain. “He bribed me to learn how to juggle and ride unicycles and all that at eight years old!,” he says. “My brothers Tom and Jo had their own band, so I was watching them do their thing. At 10 years old both my sister and I got piano lessons and my musical world started to be developed.” His teenage dream was to be an actor, but music pulled at him, with a focus on writing - precociously, his first band, when he was 15, boasting a brass section as his love for all sorts of jazz intensified, complementing a pre-teen obsession with hip-hop, through which he learned to beat-box, as heard on “Speak to Me”, “Wild Ones” and “Hello Alone”. “I like to keep that element that sounds personal and intimate. If something’s produced by the body, it’s immediately more intimate.” At 16 he followed brother Tom to music studies in London amid a vast array of students, he being the youngest. The oldest? “An old Jamaican guy, 72, who was a terrible trumpeter!” he says. “For me it was like home, used to odd characters around the hotel. My complete goal at the time was to become the best jazz pianist in the world, which is a little high. But nonetheless, good to have that focus.” Ambition, then, was not a deficit. The campus also sported a dance school and Winston made contacts there and wrote music for some programs. He also, not much later, wrote a “little trio piece” for the London Symphony and “realized my calling was in composition as opposed to improvisation. That became everything to me.” Next came a three-year stint in Baxter, the band fronted by his brother Tom Baxter (Charlie, Tom and sister Vashti Anna all use their middle names as stage names), learning the ropes of the pop life. Approaching 21, though, he needed a break and traveled to India for a month alone, returning to London to concentrate on writing music for theater, but quickly sliding in to the dual role of performing music as well as composing for stage productions before his brother recruited him back, this time often giving Charlie the opening slots on his shows. It was while recording Baxter sessions at Real World Studios that Winston met Peter Gabriel and a bond formed. A publishing deal allowed Winston to record Make Way. The somewhat vagabondish life he’d been leading inspired “Like a Hobo,” and though he decided not to include it on the debut, it became a regular part of shows and grabbed hold of fans‘ imaginations. The song debuted at numberone in France on 11 April 2011 and stayed for eleven weeks in the top five. “The song seemed to generate this persona for me in people’s minds,” he says. “People would say, ‘How’s your hobo life.‘ I’m not really a hobo! It’s like a hobo, but it was about my core values. Thinking about things my parents told me that I keep close to my heart. Important not to put material values at the top of my list. Having few possessions was important to me, as a means for keeping loved ones closer.” At that time a girlfriend prodded him to get out of London, travel more. So he busked his way around Europe, getting gigs where he could, making friends along the way, ultimately landing in Paris, and everything came together: He fell in with drummer Medi (a singer-songwriter in his own right, with a Bergproduced album released in 2011) as well as a manager and label who took a very active role in building up his name. Even a month before his second album was released, he was startled to be recognized by two girls while waiting to get on a Eurostar train. When Hobo was released, it all took off. After the whirlwind of travel and performing that followed, those around him suggested he take a break. “But I’d heard of too many artists on their second album being stuck after a hit record, and I didn’t want to be in that position,” he says. Following up the breakthrough of his 2009 album, Hobo, a No. 1 smash in France and a huge hit throughout Europe and Canada, Running Still finds Winston and his richly talented band, the Oxymorons, in collaboration with producer Tony Berg (Michael Penn, Aimee Mann, Bruce Hornsby, Ozomatli) to reach new emotional and sonic colors. “My sole objective on the album was to be able to engage people’s feet first and slowly rise to the mind,” he says. “So by the time they get absorbed in the lyrics, they’re fully engaged but realize there’s something more going on.” Charlie is working on his next album currently, with a release date in the autumn of 2014. www.charliewinston.com 36 BIOGRAPHIES 2014 GENEVA GALA RAFFLE Dj Miss D Coming from the family of musicians, Miss D has been interested in music since a very young age and in 2009 she discovered her passion for DJ-ing. His newest works will be a continuation of his “Situated Knowledge” series. In this body of work, Kropf employs interference paint, which is capable of reflecting both an individual color and its complementary hue, depending on the setting and the spectator’s position. This highly technical pigment has no inherent color of its own, and as Kropf notes, looking at one of his paintings from the side “is almost like seeing an unprimed canvas.” The assertion that a work of art is defined by its context and the perspective of its viewer—a legacy of conceptual art—is integral to Kropf’s work; it also addresses the cultural practices surrounding how a painting is produced, exhibited, and photographed. Kropf’s work stubbornly resists photography: it is nearly impossible to communicate its appearance on film. The series title “Situated Knowledge” is derived from an essay by the American feminist scientist Donna Haraway, who tries to define a specifically feminist scientific perspective, and notes that the human brain privileges sight above all other senses, lending a sense of validation to any facts that can be perceived by sight. However, the appearance and meaning of Kropf’s paintings is entirely dependent on factors outside of his control: conditions of ambient light, time of day, and the viewer’s movement and “situated” point of view. This deliberate openness to chance and context is in the spirit of minimalist works like Robert Morris’s Mirror Cubes. Yet despite his many references to the history of art, Kropf also spreads his paint “like pastry” with an unassuming delight in the richness of his material. He emphasizes the pliable nature of the paint, spreading it across the canvas in a thick impasto of dynamic, ethereal scrolls. With their large scale, visual transformations, and conceptual foundation, Kropf’s paintings engage and challenge the viewer intellectually, physically and optically. Born in 1979 in Lausanne, Switzerland, Stéphane Kropf studied at the Ecole Cantonal d’Art de Lausanne, where he is currently Head of the Department of Visual Arts. His work has been exhibited at Musée d’art moderne et contemporain (MAMCO), Geneva; Galerie Am Lindenplatz, Vaduz; The Bathroom, Lyon; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and the Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard, Paris. Current solo exhibitions include Kropf’s first exhibition in the United States The Art of Looking Sideways, at Marc Jancou Gallery in New York , Double Crème, Château de Gruyères, and a yet-to-be-titled exhibition at Galerie Andrea Caratsch, Zurich, in December 2014. cordium.com Lionel Bovier, Independent Curator and Head of Books at JRP-Ringier, has contributed the this text. 45 A SALUTE TO OUR 2014 GLOBAL ANGELS 46 Jane Abitanta * Emily Chien Mona Aboelnaga Lindsey Clavel Founder and Principal Perceval Associates, Inc.
