Tamanduá Bandeira (Giant Anteater)
Tamanduá Bandeira (Giant Anteater)
Designed by Hugo Alves Akitaya
Brazil
The anteater is a mammal from South
and Central America savannas. It feeds on ants
and termites, using his long tongue covered with
sticky saliva to trap them. The anteater has five
fingers on each hand, and three of which have
longer claws for digging and self defense. Because of these claws, it walks on its knuckles.
The Giant Anteater is a symbol of brazilian savanna. It is threatened by the savanna burns
and car accidents on highways.
The design of this model was helped by
the software TreeMaker develloped by Robert
Lang.
1. Begin with a square, colored side
up. Fold and unfold along the
diagonal.
4. Fold the left edge to the two
pinches made at step 3. Pinch
only the bottom and unfold.
2. Make a pinch in the middle
along the other diagonal.
5. Fold and unfold. The mark
shoud be paralell to the edge
and must contain the interception
between the bottom edge and the
mark made at step 4.
3. Make 2 pinches folding the
right edge to the downward
digonal using the mark made
at step 2.
6. Devide the upper edge in two.
7. Fold the bottom right corner
to the crease made at atep 6.
Unfold.
8. Fold the upper right corner to
the crease made at step 7.
Unfold.
9. Bring the bottom left corner to
the right edge and the left edge to
the mark made at step 6. Pinch
the upper part.
10. Devide the left edge in two.
11. Fold the upper right corner
to the mark made at step 10.
Pinch the bottom.
12. Fold the upper right corner
to the mark made at step 11.
Unfold.
13. Mountain fold connecting the
marks made at step 5 and 8.
14. Use the diagonal as a
symmetry line to fold step 13 on
the other side.
15. Fold along the crease. The
result will not lie flat.
16. Valley fold aligning with the
edge behind.
19. Repeat steps 15-18 on the
other side.
22. Valley fold bringing the
intersection of the mark made
at step 21 and the bottom edge
to the right edge. Unfold. Repeat
symmetrically.
17. Unfold step 15.
18. Valley fold aligning with the
left edge of the paper folded at
step 16. Unfold.
20. Mountain fold the left edge
to the symmetry line.
21. Valley fold parallel with paper
edge. Connet the intersection
made at step 20 with the left edge.
Repeat steps 20-21 on the other
side.
23. Valley fold bisecting the
angle until the mark made at
step 12. Unfold.
24. Valley fold connecting the
intersection just made and the
mark and the step 9 mark.
Unfold.
25. Make the creases of steps 23
to 24 using the diagonal as the
symmetry line.
28. Mountain fold trough the
diagonal.
31. Valley fold bringin the crease
made at step 18 to the axis of the
model.
26. Valley fold passing through the
intersection of the creases made
at steps 23 and 24. Repeat on the
other side.
29. Squash fold along the
existing creases.
32. Reverse fold the edge to
the axis.
27. Fold and unfold bissecting
the angle.
30. In progress. The two points
marked by the circles will lie
along the axis of the model.
33. Unsink left side. It is easier to
unfold part of the model.
34. Squash fold.
35. Petal fold along the existing
creases.
36. Swing two flaps over to the
left.
37. Asymmetric squash fold
aligning the point marked with
the circle with the axis.
38. Swing three flaps over to the
right.
39. Repeat steps 36 - 38 on the
other side.
40. Flip the model over.
41. Valley fold bringing the
edge to the vertex below.
Unfold.
42. Squash fold using the existing
creases. From now on the model
will be zoomed 150%.
44. Reverse fold bisecting the
angle.
45. Valley fold marking the angle
bisector. Unfold.
46. Pull where indicated unfolding
step 42.
47. Rabbit-ear fold using the
crease made at step 45.
48. Swing one flap left.
49. Repeat step 47 on this side.
50. Squash fold using the
creases made at step 42.
43. Fold and unfold along the
axis.
51. Petal fold .
52. Swing a flap to the left folding
as a spread sink.
53. Valley fold the flap back.
55. Reverse fold.
56. Reverse fold.
58. Turn the model over.
59. Swing three flaps left.
54. Valley fold the bisector
swinging the bottom part of
the flap to the left.
57. Repeat steps 52-56 on the
other side.
60. Pull the flaps left unfolding
the squash fold made at step 29.
61. Reverse fold.
64. Repeat 61 - 63 behind.
67. Spread sink.
62. Rabbit-ear fold along
existing creases.
65. Squash fold along creases
made at step 29.
68. Valley fold the flap to the
right.
63. Pleat aligning two edges.
66. Petal fold. From now on
the model will be zoomed
150% again.
69. Repeat steps 67-68 on the
other side. Flip over.
72. Next steps will focus on the
circle.
70. Fold down one flap.
71. Valley fold the tip up.
73. Valley fold down opening
the flaps in the middle.
76. Valley fold bringing one
flap down.
74. Swivel fold valley folding
the edges to the axis.
77. Pull one flap up.
75. Valley fold paralell to the
edges. Next step will zoom out.
78. Valley fold in the axis.
