The Formation of the Southern Appalachians
& Its Influence on the Botanicals We Now Enjoy
in the Mountains of Western North Carolina
The southern Appalachians were formed some 300 million years ago when the ancestral African continent
collided with the ancestral North American continent. For tens of millions of years the African continent
pushed under and upward on the North American continent forming what we now know as the southern
Appalachians. Experts estimate that these mountains originally exceeded 20,000 feet in elevation, perhaps
some peaks higher than the very highest we know on earth at present. Over time the mountains have
eroded. Today in western North Carolina there are 43 peaks over 6000 feet and 82 peaks between 5000
& 6000 feet in elevation.
Specific to the botanicals of this area today. At elevations ranging from 1500 feet to elevations in excess of
5500 feet you will encounter at least 5 different natural plant communities. Some plants live in only one
of the communities while others are common to several of them. There is about 3 degrees of temperature
change per 1000 feet of elevation change which greatly influences the uniqueness of each plant community.
The 5 plant communities are as follows:
•Cove Hardwood Forest Community (ranges from 1500 - 4500 feet elevation)
•Oak-Hickory Forest Community (below 3500 feet elevation)
•Mountain Bald Community (ranges from 3500 - 5500 feet elevation)
•Northern Hardwood Forest Community (ranges from 3500 - 5500 feet elevation)
•Spruce Fir Forest Community (above 5500 feet elevation)
The Spruce Fir Forest Community Makes it Christmas in July
The Spruce Fir Forest Communites of western North Carolina are actually very similar to the Spruce
Fir Forests of southeastern Canada. Fossil evidence suggests the plants here are relics of the last ice age.
Gradually, the growth of various species of plants advanced southward from Canada ahead of the glaciers.
When the glaciers retreated about 15,000 years ago, some of the cold adapted plants were left isolated on
the cool mountain summits of the southern Appalachians, forming biological islands.
I love being outdoors and I so much enjoy the beauty of western North Carolina. It has truly been an
inspiration for my natural & gentle pet bathing recipes. One of my favorite outdoor activities is road
cycling. I have a lot of riding experience, including some racing in Europe when I was younger. Now I just
enjoy riding the incredibly challenging topography here for fun & fitness. I have also come to love day
hiking in the mountains that are now my home. Along the way I’m able to see & distinguish the various
botanical communities. And although I’m able to recognize & appreciate the uniqueness of each of the
botanical communities, for me personally, the Spruce Fir Forest Community is “King”.
A very favorite day for me would be to bicycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway from about the north side of
Asheville, through the Craggy Gardens area, to the entrance to Mt. Mitchell State Park and then finish the
ride with the ascent to the summit at Mt. Mitchell (Mt. Mitchell is the highest point in the eastern United
States at 6684 feet of elevation, its parking area at 6,578 feet). At approximately 3-4 miles from the turn off
to Mt. Mitchell State Park, as you complete the climb out of Balsam Gap, there is an absolutely fabulous
and breathtaking alpine venue where, even if it’s July, you’re able to smell Christmas Trees. Once at Mt.
Mitchell’s summit, a hike through the Spruce Fir Forest over to Mt. Craig (the second highest point in the
eastern United States at 6643 feet in elevation). It’s nothing short of incredible and it always reminds me to
keep my focus on the natural & gentle style pet bathing products.
On a clear day the view from Mt. Mitchell’s summit is quite spectacular. However at more than 1-1/4 miles
in altitude even summertime bad weather can be quite dramatic & forboding and these conditions mild by
comparison to those of winter. How specialized the botanicals of this community must be in order to sustain
& flourish.

Docs’s Medicated Remoisturizing Rinse 14:1 Concentrate
Doc’s Medicated Remoisturizing Rinse will provide soothing relief to bacterial & fungal
infections of the skin and offers appreciable residual time for added relief & healing.
The special formulation also helps to re-moisturize existing dry skin conditions as well as
dryness inherently caused by medicated shampoo ingredients used to remove oily scaling
or dry scaling. Clean, non-medicinal aroma. May be used safely on cats or dogs.
Doc’s Medicated Shampoo 14:1 Concentrate
Doc’s Medicated Shampoo addresses three of the four primary external sources of
itchiness. It removes oily scaling & dry scaling and it also soothes & helps heal itchy,
irritated skin due to bacterial & fungal infections. Unlike tar shampoo, Doc’s Medicated
Shampoo may be used safely on cats as well as dogs and it has a very clean, nonmedicinal aroma. The fourth external cause of itchiness is fleas & insects. This condition
is addressed by using the Smoky Mountains Naturals non-pesticidal flea products, either
the Especial Greene Solution or the Especial Greene Shampoo.
Especial Greene Solution 64:1 Concentrate
and Especial Greene Shampoo 3:1 Concentrate
Extremely fast and effective formulations that will help to relieve and eliminate
scratching, itching and further trauma due to insect bites, especially fleas, ticks & lice
as well as other skin irritations. They are completely pesticide free and 100% non-toxic.
May be used safely on kittens, puppies, nursing animals, in the presence of flea control
products, during animal worming and as often as desired. Especial Greene Shampoo has
a mild cleansing base that leaves the fur soft & shiny and is very gentle on both the pet’s
skin and the bather’s hands. Especial Greene Solution is a highly concentrated version of

High Meadow Eucalyptus 10:1 Concentrate
A deep cleansing, degreasing shampoo that exhibits excellent deodorizing qualities helping to naturally alleviate “doggie” odor and the stench of urine.
It even helps quite well with skunk odor. Naturally occurring eucalyptus aroma, no added fragrance. The recipe is 100% pesticide free and even contains
a small quantity of the main ingredient used in the Especial Greene Solution & the Especial Greene Shampoo. Authentic Eucalyptus Oil, which is
naturally acidic & therefore beneficial to fungal conditions, combined with authentic Tea Tree Oil that provides soothing relief to bitten, irritated skin.

sweet vanilla notes combined with muted orangey, woody tones. Freshen the coat

Zymox Medicated Shampoo & Medicated Rinse
A two part medicated skin product that is antibacterial & antifungal. Both
the shampoo & rinse contain the protein based Three Point Enzyme System
(Lactoferrin, Lactoperoxidase, Lysozyme) which is also found and produced
in milk. This system attacks and provides a protective barrier against minor
skin inflammations and surface irritations due to bacterial and fungal
microorganisms. Zymoz Medicated Shampoo & Zymox Medicated Rinse also
contain vitamin D3 for added itch & inflammation relief. Shampoo base is
gentle and non-drying. Both the shampoo & rinse may be used safely on pets
