Hutto Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors & Staff 3 4 About Hutto Welcome Situated in the booming Central Texas area, Hutto is a small town located near all the conveniences you seek. Located on the SH130 corridor and less than 30 minutes away from downtown Austin, Hutto is an integral part of the growing Austin Metro area. Hutto is a unique city comprised of a friendly and diverse population. Our safe and stable community is a great place for you and your family. We welcome you to join us whether you are visiting us, or if you are looking for a place to call home. The History of Hutto The History of Hutto is extensive and varied and includes tales of slaves, Native Americans and hippos. Originally, Hutto was settled in 1854 by 17 year old slave, Addam Orgain. It is said that when Addam’s owner, John Henry Orgain, moved to Central Texas in the early 1850’s, Addam was forced to travel with him. He was then ordered to look after the ranching interests of the Orgain family. After emancipation in 1865, Addam chose to stay and continue to work for the Orgain’s. In 1880 he bought five acres of land from his former owner and built a home for his new family, which now included wife Eveline, and sons Adam, Jr. and Benjamin. In 1876 James Emory Hutto, a cattleman, sold 50 acres of land to the Texas Land Company of New York for a town site, reserving a 5 acre grant of property out of the sale for a railroad right of way. By the end of this year, Hutto had certainly been established as a town with a railroad depot, a post office, a general store and a lumber business. In 1877, Hutto was appointed as postmaster, and quickly became one of the wealthiest cattle ranchers in Williamson County. In 1911 Hutto was established as an incorporated city, in part due to its growth. A more detailed and extensive history of the town can be found on the City’s website (www.huttotx.gov), as well as in various publications. 5 What’s with all the Hippos? If you have been in Hutto for any period of time, the question “what’s with all the Hippos?” has probably crossed your mind. Hutto ISD is the only school in the nation with a mascot of the Hippo. As such, it has become a tradition and an identifying trademark for the whole city. The legend of the Hippo and the Hippo mascot is a source of great pride for the community. This can be seen throughout the town where unique and identifiable Hippos are found in front of businesses, city offices, and even private homes. It is a rare street where there is not at least one Hippo in residence. The Legend of the Hippo The story goes, in 1915 a circus train stopped in Hutto to take on passengers, attend to business, and refuel the steam locomotive. During this stop the circus workers were attending to the care of the animals. It was during this time that the Circus’ hippopotamus escaped and made its way to Cottonwood Creek, promptly settling into the muddy waters that so closely resembled a natural habitat. This caused great panic for the circus workers as the animal would not budge, but was great entertainment for the locals as they watched on in amusement. It is said the Depot Agent, Hal Farley, Jr., telegraphed the neighboring towns of Taylor and Round Rock, “Stop trains. Hippo loose in Hutto”. After much effort the hippo was prodded from the mud and was reloaded back onto the train car. Soon afterward the Hutto School adopted the hippopotamus as its mascot, and, as early as 1923, the hippo appeared on official Hutto High School graduation announcements. 6 Residential Subdivisions 1 Brushy Creek Meadows HOA—Yes Community Pool—Yes Community Playground—Yes Active Builder: N/A 2 Carol Meadows HOA—No Community Pool—No Community Playground—No Active Builder: N/A 3 4 Clarks Crossing HOA—No Community Pool—No Community Playground—No Active Builder: N/A Country Estates HOA—No Community Pool—No Community Playground—No Active Builder: N/A 5 Country Estates II HOA—No Community Pool—No Community Playground—No Active Builder: N/A 6 Creek Bend HOA—Yes Community Pool—Yes Community Playground—Yes Active Builder: Centex Homes Builder Contact: 866.217.9036 7 Creekside Estates HOA—No Community Pool—No Community Playground—No Active Builder: N/A 8 Emory Farms HOA—Yes Community Pool—No Community Playground—Yes Active Builder: Gehan Homes Builder Contact: 512.330.9366 9 Glenwood HOA—Yes Community Pool—Yes Community Playground—Yes Subdivision Website: www.glenwoodhoa.net Active Builder: N/A 14 Legends of Hutto HOA—Yes Community Pool—No Community Playground—Yes Subdivision Website: www.legendsofhuttohoa.com Active Buidler: Lexor Homes Builder Contact: 512.846.1088 / 512.791.9481 15 Riverwalk HOA—Yes Community Pool—Yes Community Playground—No Active Builder: DR Horton Builder Contact: 512.759.2435 10 Hutto Highlands HOA—Yes Community Pool—No 16 Community Playground—No Active Builder: Scott Custom Homes Builder Contact: 512.746.2760 11 Hutto Town Square HOA—Yes Community Pool—Yes Community Playground—Yes Subdivision Website: www.huttotownsquare.com Active Builder: N/A 12 Lakeside Estates HOA—Yes Community Pool—Yes Community Playground—Yes Active Builder: N/A 13 Huttoparke HOA—Yes Community Pool—Yes Community Playground—Yes Subdivision Website: www.huttoparkehoa.com Active Builder: N/A Strum Park HOA—No Community Pool—No Community Playground—No Active Builder: N/A 17 The Cottonwood HOA—No Community Pool—No Community Playground—No Active Builder: N/A 18 The Enclave at Brushy Creek HOA—Yes Community Pool—No Community Playground—No Active Builder: N/A 19 The Park at Brushy Creek HOA—Yes Community Pool—Yes Community Playground—Yes Subdivision Website: parkatbrushycreek-hoa.com Active Buidler: N/A 7 LIT T LE EL RP PU MW LE LN DR BL AN R CO D BOS QUE RIO GRA ND E PECO S D R BRA Z OS N LN PEAR LAN D s DEL BY WILLOW B ROO A R LD UG LN LA DYB MITCH ELL DR BOW IE LN MAN CT LIG HTF OOT CT MUS SEL S LO CT CT AND ROS CT HER SEE CT LOS OYA CT GA RR ETT N CT DAY MO BAL LEN TINE CT CT 9 CL OUD RD T DR OL LN SW IND N COM AL RU CR 197 L B RO OK DR 0 0.15 0.3 0.6 Miles 0.9 1.2 UGH LN LN FISH BA LAVAC A LOOP STO NY KAT ES WAY sin g Cree k Be nd RIV E PA RBE SS D MINNO W PAS S PEBB LE PATH WO LD DR DR FLAT R OCK FOR SYTH N ST WAY LOO P ESTATE CV SECR ETAR IAT RIDG E LN DERBY DAY AVE CR 138 ST.
