Paul Dillon, Drug and Alcohol Research
Covers current and practically important issues
concerning alcohol, drugs and young people.
Binge drinking and schoolies are key topics. It
will include advice on how professionals can
effectively communicate with young people and help them
to successfully negotiate the peer-pressure, misinformation,
advertising, role models and other social/cultural forces,
preventing them from making sensible choices.
Sexualisation in the Media & its Impact on Wellbeing
Melinda Tankard Reist,
Author and Activist
Current scientific opinion tells us that
sexualised imagery can have a negative effect
on the mental wellbeing of young people,
including pre-schoolers and tweens. Examine why our children
are living in an increasingly sexualised and commercialised
environment, what sort of pressures they are facing, and where
these pressures come from. Most importantly find out what
teaching, health and welfare professionals can do to inform
and protect this vulnerable new generation.
Promoting Positive Parent/Child Relationships
Jo Lamble, Clinical Psychologist,
Relationship Expert Channel 9
Good parent/child relationships have a very
powerful protective effect on mental health.
Parents are often confused about their role and
how to stay connected with their child through all ages of their
upbringing. Teachers, health professionals and all those who
work with young people can play an important role in helping
parents and kids establish and maintain their relationship.
Practical Resilience Strategies
HOTELS
Many young people suffer from depression and
anxiety. In addition to education about how
to detect and manage this problem we also
need to look at ways of preventing it. Learn
how “resilience skills” can become the basis of a strategy for
the prevention of depression and related problems that can
be implemented in schools and other environments that are
sensitive to the developmental needs of young people and the
professionals that care for them.

Strategies to Keep Kids Safe Online
”
Susan McLean, Cybersafety Expert
Young people now have access to technologies
whose power exceeds their level of maturity,
often resulting in cyberbullying. This presentation will feature the latest research. A
special focus on what professionals and their
organisations can do to increase safety, reduce litigation and
enhance “cyberwellness”.
Mental Health Red Flags
Dr John Irvine, Psychologist and Teacher
Sometimes unusual behaviour, even just being
“difficult” can be a sign of more serious
underlying problems such as depression,
psychosis, substance abuse or some other
issue that needs more than just patience and
understanding. This presentation outlines common mental
health early warning signs and what to do.
Bullyblocking Skills
Evelyn Field, Psychologist,
Author of Bullyblocking
The prevalence of bullying in Australia appears
to be worsening. This presentation defines
bullying, examines the characteristics of the
bully and the victim the short, medium and long
term impacts. The relationship between bullying and school
violence will be explored. It concludes with what schools,
teachers, health and welfare professionals and parents can do.
Encouraging Self-Regulation in Teenagers
Michael Hawton, Psychologist & Teacher
Learning self-regulation skills is an important
part of growing into an adult; it is one of the
challenges of maturity. Parents can play an
important role in helping teenagers towards
maturity. P.A.S.T.A for Teenagers™ is a method
that provides parents with a way to confront a teenager’s
difficult behaviour, without turning it into WWlll.
Depression Proofing Schools
Dan Haesler, Teacher
Depression Proofing Schools highlights what
schools need to consider in order to deliver
an education that truly meets the needs of
the 21st Century child. Citing the work of
leading thinkers in education and wellbeing,
Dan explores what role education could play in avoiding the
predicted Depression Epidemic of 2030.
