Hard Candy Custom™ is being extended to become an entire genre of styling options – to become more of a lifestyle statement than just a paint job. Your customers will be able to purchase HCC-inspired Parts & Accessories and HCCinspired General Merchandise items that complement their motorcycles and allow them to create a truly unique HCC influenced ride. Big, bold funky colors. Radical paint schemes and graphics. Total bling appeal. This is the emerging trend found in custom bike shops around the globe. But this design style isn’t new – it’s roots date back to the customs of the 60s and 70s. And this trend has great relevance for the Harley-Davidson® brand whose unique vision has always been to create a truly retro-inspired style. From the introduction of the Super Glide® model, the first factory custom, through the launch of H-D1™ customization, Harley has led way in offering a custom experience for its customers. The introduction of Hard Candy Big Red Flake paint on the Seventy-Two™ at mid-year was the next logical step. This ability to offer a custom-look, large metal flake paint direct from the factory further set Harley-Davidson apart from the competition. Two additional colors have been added to the Hard Candy Custom™ (HCC) paint offering. Hard Candy Lucky Green Flake and Hard Candy Coloma Gold will be available for 2013, with five models featuring at least one HCC paint color option; Street Bob,® Blackline,® Softail® Deluxe, Seventy-Two™ and the Forty-Eight.™ For 2013, HCC-inspired accessories will include custom paints, seats, bags and handlebar options. General Merchandise shirts, tees, caps and helmets will feature blocks of color, the HCC logo and graphics inspired by the paint scheme of the motorcycles. The potential for your dealerships is huge. Hard Candy Custom™ is sure to have broad appeal with customers looking for the next, head-turning element in custom cool. And the blinged-out paint, retro-look and custom components Harley-Davidson offers as part of HCC, will allow customers to make a bold lifestyle statement, not available from other brands. 2013 Model Year Highlights H-D1™ is Customization H-D1™ is all the things we do around customization and personalization that make the Harley-Davidson experience unique and truly one-of-a-kind. Beyond factory customization, H-D1 encompasses all the processes, products and people that deliver the Custom Of One experience to the consumer. By bringing all of these personalization tools together into one place, with one name, more consumers will be motivated to start building their one-of-a-kind H-D® bike. H-D1™ customization is also the key to relevance for the next generation of riders. The riders of this generation are more independent and demanding than any generation that has come before. Harley-Davidson is the only motorcycle in the world that can meet these customization demands, and inspire them to build their Custom of One. What Does H-D1™ Include? •• -D1™ FIT SHOP H Rebranding Fit Shop as part of H-D1 increases its visibility to attract more interest on your sales floor. Two kit options – Fat Boy® and Sportster® – allow you to demonstrate how any H-D® model can be customized to fit nearly any body, and allow consumers to “try” motorcycles fitted with seats, handlebars and suspension before they purchase. •• -D1 GENUINE PARTS & ACCESSORIES H The popular Custom Seat and Custom Paint programs and the Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories catalogs have been rebranded to incorporate the H-D1 look and feel. Together they offer customers more options than any other competitor for personalizing their Custom of One. •• -D1 CONSULTATION H Many new riders, and even current customers, say they’re overwhelmed by the customization options available to them. Encourage your employees to become familiar with what is offered as part of the H-D1 program. Routinely offer H-D1 consultations to consumers. The more staff members with expertise in helping customers personalize their H-D® motorcycle, whether it is new or used, the bigger the impact on the dealership. •• NLINE H-D1™ BIKE BUILDER O The online H-D1™ Bike Builder allows customers and prospects to visualize their custom ideas online at www.harleydavidson.com/hd1bikebuilder. By adding parts, components and custom options, consumers can build a motorcycle that fits their own unique style and personality. All current H-D® models are now incorporated into the Bike Builder. 2013 Model Year Highlights H-D1™ Customer Designed Factory Customization H-D1™ FACTORY CUSTOMIZATION Factory customization is Harley-Davidson’s “made to order” program. It allows consumers to begin creating their personalized H-D® motorcycle – even before it reaches the showroom floor. And new for 2013, is the addition of the Dyna® Street Bob® model to this program. Starting with either a base Sportster® 1200 Custom model or Dyna® Street Bob® model, customers can design their bike online using the H-D1™ Bike Builder, then work with your dealership to include additional customization before having you place their complete order. What Does H-D1™ Factory Customization Include? Factory Customization The equipment and systems shown below are available as factory-installed options as part of H-D1™ Factory Customization. Additionally, the factory customized Street Bob® model includes an automatic upgrade to the Twin Cam 103™ engine. This program opens up opportunities with new customer segments and creates a unique path for customers to build the bike of their dreams. It will also eliminate waste by forgoing unwanted parts, requires no additional inventory to manage, and avoids dealer transfers of these Sportster® and Dyna® models. Harley-Davidson is often catergorized by competitors as “old school,” because the look of H-D® motorcycles has not changed much over the years. It’s true, big V-Twin engines and exposed components are a mainstay of Harley style. Their clean, nostaglic lines pay homage to the Bobbers, Baggers and custom Cruisers of time past, but their styling is deceptively simple. While competitive models may showcase their technology in visible components, Harley-Davidson has designed their high-tech components into the bike. Hidden wires power all the latest components without impacting the overall style or the integrity of the motorcycles. Technology The focus for Harley-Davidson has always been the “ride,” not the technology – what is best for the rider and how these innovations can fit into the design of the motorcycle. The features described below illustrate how Harley technology is truly the intersection between innovation and Style, Fit, Function and Performance. Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) – Results in a cleaner look for the handlebar area by eliminating the cable connection from the throttle body. Engine Idle Temperature Management Strategy (EITMS) – Designed to reduce excess engine heat. The Rear Cylinder Cut-Out System shuts off fueling to provide limited cooling of the rear cylinder, useful when a motorcycle is at prolonged idle. Available on Big Twin engines. Isolated Drive System – Improves rider comfort and ride quality by dampening mechanical noise and vibration. As a result, the motorcycle feels more refined, and is quieter while accelerating, shifting and cruising. Featured on Touring models. Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) – Results in a more efficient burn by metering the fuel/air ratio to provide the best distribution within the cylinder. Standard on all H-D® models. Lessened Clutch Effort – The V-Rod® family features a unique “Assist & Slip Clutch.” It reduces clutch friction, requiring less clutch lever effort by the rider, and provides smooth, high-power handling in turns or whenever you downshift. Tires – No other company works alongside tire manufacturers to develop tires specifically suited to enhance their motorcycle handling and performance. Dunlop® has created Dunlop® Harley-Davidson® Series tires, featured on all Softail,® Touring, Trike, CVO™ and Dyna® Fat Bob® and Switchback models. And Michelin® Scorcher® tires come standard on V-Rod,® Sportster® and select Dyna® models. 6-speed Cruise Drive® Transmission – Available on all Big Twin engines. Carbon Fiber Final Drive Belts – Increased belt strength and longevity with less belt twist and flex. Standard on all models. Self-canceling turn signals – Standard on all H-D® models. 2013 Model Year Highlights What Makes a Harley® Motorcycle a Harley? ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM OPTION ELECTRONIC CRUISE CONTROL ENGINES Harley-Davidson’s independent ABS is designed to help maintain control during braking events, especially those that happen in less than optimum conditions. Engineering and styling worked together to insure superb functionality without compromising the unique Harley-Davidson style. Cruise control is available as an optional upgrade on all Touring and CVO™ models not already equipped with this feature. It offers riders increased comfort during long haul rides. At the heart of every Harley-Davidson® motorcycle is the iconic V-Twin engine. HARLEY-DAVIDSON ® SMART SECURITY SYSTEM The H-D® Smart Security System is a factory-installed option that utilizes a next-generation, hands-free security fob and proximity-based system. The System senses when the fob is near the motorcycle to deactivate the security features. ABS and the H-D® Smart Security System are also available in a bundled Security Package option on many 2013 models. H-D® ABS Honda® ABS ABS is offered on all Harley-Davidson® V-Rod,® Touring, CVO,™ Softail® and Dyna® models. During an ABS event, the rider may feel a pulsing in the hand and/or foot levers and hear a grinding from the motorcycle. Additionally, the rider may hear a clicking sound from the tires. These are part of the normal operation of the anti-lock braking system during an ABS event. Screamin’ Eagle® Twin Cam 110™ Engine Featured exclusively in CVO™ models •• 1802 cc air-cooled engine/ 6-speed Cruise Drive® transmission Twin Cam 103™ and 103B™ Engine Twin Cam 103™ engine featured on all Touring (including Police and Fire/ Rescue), Trike and Dyna® Switchback, Fat Bob® and Wide Glide® models. Finishes Paint All Harley-Davidson® finishes—whether paint, chrome, brushed or blacked – go through a rigorous development and testing process to meet specific styling and quality measures. These tests measure resistance to environment and impact, check for finish thickness and adhesion, and ensure that the final surface-finish quality and color are uniform across all products. The look of a motorcycle is greatly influenced by the paint color. Harley-Davidson offers their paints in five different finishes – gloss, pearl, sunglo and denim and the all-new Hard Candy Custom.™ Only if a finish passes these tests is it used on HarleyDavidson® production bikes. •• unglo paints use a transparent, tinted topcoat over S a metallic base coat. This topcoat adds depth and richness while allowing the metallic pigments to show through with brilliant clarity. •• enim paints use a denim, or matte, topcoat instead D of a gloss style. This diffuses the light without impacting the color, giving it a “flat” look. lossy finishes are hand buffed, releasing a G gleaming shine. •• Pearl paints use metal flake in a translucent topcoat over a solid basecoat. These flakes diffuse the light that passes through, creating sparkle, luster and iridescence. •• Chrome Harley-Davidson is able to produce the brightest and most durable chrome in the industry by carefully specifying materials, industry leading practices, and discipline in execution. This process begins with polishing of the component to near-mirror smoothness. Next, the component goes through surface activation in preparation for plating. During plating a combination of layers is applied, guaranteeing the best overall surface for both appearance and durability. It begins with a thin plated deposit to assure that the finish adheres consistently to the component. Additional plated layers of nickel (ductile nickel/bright nickel/porous nickel) follow. The most demanding components are then plated with copper and polished before receiving the final chrome finish. •• ard Candy Custom™ paint is a new, unique finish H that combines extra-large, color-stained metal flakes with a seven-pass paint process to produce a radical brilliance on the bike. The size of the flake and the depth of the clear coat allow a high degree of variation in how the metal flake gathers and disperses in the paint. This gives subtle differences to each HCC paint job, which gives each bike a custom feel. To achieve the quality and durability of these finishes, Harley-Davidson uses an industry leading paint process. An industrial grade pretreatment cleans and etches the metal to accept the primer. Next comes an automotive-quality PPG cathodic epoxy e-coat to aid in rust protection. Finally, various thermal-set, acrylic or cross-linked polyurethane cosmetic paint layers are applied, depending on the artwork being replicated in production. Denim and glossy finishes get an additional layer of 3-mil powder or liquid thermal-set acrylic or crosslinked polyurethane clear coat. This coating is thicker than the 1 to 1.5-mil industry average. It protects the paint color better, is smoother to the touch, and provides better resistance against wear and scratches. 2013 Model Year Highlights Riding is All About Choices Style. Fit. Function. Performance. These are the four key factors to be considered in selecting a motorcycle. sTYLE Styling is what initially attracts a customer to a particular motorcycle. Tires, rims, fenders, headlamp, front forks and rake, handlebar design, frame style, fuel tank shape, console, paint, finishes, chrome, seat height, shocks, fenders and exhaust all contribute to the motorcyle’s overall visual esthetic. Harley-Davidson is constantly looking at the leading edge of style and fashion to create a motorcycle that will be popular in the future. We offer a variety of different motorcycle styles – from drag-inspired models to classic old school “looks,” like the stripped-down “bobber” style of the 50’s, the raked-out, chromed-out, easy-rider chopper look of the ‘60s, and the dressed-out design of the ‘48 panhead – all true to the heritage of the H-D brand. FIT Performance Fit is how a bike’s features affect your customers’ reach and ride positions. It is determined by the “magic triangle” – the relationship between the seat, handlebar and the feet location on footpegs, footboards and foot controls. Every Harley-Davidson® motorcycle places the rider in one of five specific riding positions: Profiling/Aggressive Profiling/ Cruising/Touring/Standard. These positions determine the magic triangle “fit,” and can dramatically change how a motorcycle feels to ride. A motorcycle’s performance is determined first and foremost by the powertrain. On a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle, this is the V-Twin, Twin-Cam engine. The balance of torque and horsepower generated by these engines, coupled with the smooth shifting transmissions, provides the ultimate riding experience. Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) and the Engine Idle Temperature Management Strategy (EITMS) on some models also contribute to the quality of the ride. Model-specific information found in various dealership sales tools identifies the riding position of each HarleyDavidson® motorcycle, and understanding these positions will give you a head start in narrowing down the right bikes to fit your customers. Braking is equally important. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is offered on V-Rod,® Dyna,® Softail® and Touring Harley-Davidson models, providing greater rider control and confidence. Tire, lean angle and the front-end rake also contribute to performance. Function Each H-D® model has specific Style, Fit, Function and Performance features detailed on the individual model overview pages. Understanding these features is necessary to successfully match customers with the right Harley-Davidson® motorcycle and ensure their ultimate satisfaction. Any features that affect ownership and support the rider’s comfort and convenience can be considered its function. These include how easy it is to care for the bike, how it handles at highway speeds and maneuvers in parking lots, and how long a rider can go between fill-ups. Controls, from ignition to braking, gauges, windshield (if equipped), and on-bike storage (saddlebags and luggage rack options) all contribute to motorcycle function. 2013 Model Year Highlights Motorcycle Colors and Striping 1 model colors CODE striping model colors CODE striping CODE Vivid Black Black Denim Ember Red Sunglo 010 016 514 — — — — — — XL 883N Black Denim Big Blue Pearl Candy Orange 016 512 595 — — — — — — VRSCF Vivid Black Candy Orange White Hot Denim Midnight Pearl/ Brilliant Silver Pearl 010 595 013 — — — — — — XL 883R* Vivid Black Brilliant Silver Pearl 010 075 — — — — XR1200X™* — — — Vivid Black Candy Orange 010 595 — — — — XL 1200C Vivid Black Big Blue Pearl Ember Red Sunglo Candy Orange/Beer Bottle — — — — Med.
