Old English Maius. Latin Maius "of Maia" Latin Maius mensis "month of Maia" Maius has always had 31 days. Maia (meaning "the great one") is the Italic goddess of spring, the daughter of Faunus, and wife of Vulcan. A History of the Months and the Meanings of their Names www.crowl.org/lawrence/time/months.html The month of May entered English from the Old French in the 1000s. In Old English, the month of May and “mother may I” could not be confused because there was another name for the month of May. Sadly, we lost the Old English word for the fifth month of the year: þrimilce. It literally meant “three milkings” because it was the only month of the year when cows could be milked three times per day. May’s confusion with may (the verb) is a small linguistic coincidence, not a meaningful overlap. The verb may came from the Old English word magan meaning “to be able.” May is here and plans are sure to be filled with outdoor activities, graduations, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. It is a busy month for many as school gets out, kids activities ramp up, and the weather supposedly gets and stays nice; verdict to be determined on that one. May is also a month of 3 quilt gardens getting ready for summer. Sprucing up, planting, cleaning, and making sure that every last detail is in place before the opening of the Quilt Garden Tour beginning Memorial Day. I said only 3 gardens because that is how many we have in Nappanee. It is great to see Dutch Village, Coppes Commons, and the Nappanee Center have a garden. Especially this year with our Bicentennial year on hand, the flowers will be more of a yellow, white, and blue throughout the tour. Did you know that the Elkhart County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau is in charge of overseeing the quilt gardens? They oversee all 19 gardens and 21 murals as well. Dianna, Sonya, Janice, and Terry are doing a great job of promoting Nappanee. The dollars they spend on marketing the Quilt Garden Tour hopefully come back to Nappanee through tourism and dollars spent here. The Nappanee Center’s team of volunteers is gearing up and soon you will see a flurry of activity hustling and bustling around the center making sure that each plant is paced in its proper spot and perfectly aligned. I invite you to come and join in the fun mid to late May as the group is always looking for volunteers. Stop by and see the progress starting May 13th or so. Well, I am off to enjoy the smell of money, aka dirt being turned over as we plant the gardens and fields. Remember that farm equipment is on the roads all times of the day and to be on the lookout for any farm equipment.
