KONI SHOCKS - SUSPENSION
KONI QUALITY AND TECHNOLOGY ARE
THE KEYS TO THE PERFORMANCE OF
YOUR CAR’S SUSPENSION
KONI shock absorbers have a reputation for high performance. In order to maintain that reputation, Koni relies on quality, in both technological design and manufacture, to assure their shocks achieve and maintain their performance. All through
the KONI manufacturing process is evidence of quality; produced from the finest
materials, surfaces are machined to the narrowest tolerances, strict quality-control
standards are incorporated in all production steps, at the end of the production line
every single damper is 100% dyno-tested to assure optimum performance.
TRUECHOICE builds KONI shocks for all types of racing cars.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT DAMPING...KONI’SANSWER IS
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
Shock absorbers are the heart of any
car’s suspension. They are often the most
neglected component when it comes to
performance tuning. KONI recognizes that
every vehicle has unique damping needs,
and for that reason they offer shocks with
three different technologies in order to offer
a system that is the perfect solution to an
individual racing application.
It is vital that the damping rate of the shock absorber be in harmony with the spring rate and unsprung mass of the vehicle
and then tuned to the current track conditions.
Every KONI is adjustable for ultimate performance benefits,
and the adjustability feature of Koni shocks makes this vital
tuning a simple procedure if a few simple guidelines are followed.
BUMP DAMPING
The bump damping controls the unsprung weight of the vehicle
(wheels, axles, hub carriers, etc.). It controls the upward movement of the suspension when hitting a bump in the track or
under braking. It should not be used to control the downward
movement of the vehicle when it encounters dips (this is a function of the spring). Also, bump damping should not be used to control roll or
bottoming. Generally, the ideal bump setting is achieved when
walking or side hop in a corner is at a minimum and traction
and ride feel the best.
REBOUND DAMPING
The primary function of rebound damping is to control or slow down the undesirable oscillations of the spring or torque tube. Rebound damping controls the transitional roll or lean
as the vehicle enters a corner.
It should not be used to try and contain the total roll of the vehicle, but it will control how
fast this roll occurs. Remember, spring rates, sway bars, roll centers and ride heights are
all determining factors in roll control.
Rebound adjustment is a very effective tool to optimize the car’s balance front to rear.
It should be noted that too much rebound control on either end of the vehicle will cause
an initial loss of lateral acceleration (cornering grip) resulting in too much understeer or
oversteer when entering the turn.
We hope you find these tips useful at the track. Remember, there is always plenty of
horsepower lurking in the chassis, and it does not necessarily come from the engine. See
more tuning tips on page 19.

SUSPENSION - KONI SHOCKS
NEW GENERATION
4-WAY ADJUSTABLE
KONI 2822
The four-way adjustable 2822 series is a unique KONI shock absorber, especially developed for the top end in motor racing. In developing this new product, Koni engineers
benefitted from many years of knowhow and experience in motor racing. Ever since
1954, Koni has held a prominent position in the racing world. Many victories and championships in Formula 1, IndyCar, Champcar, IRL and many other touring, sports and
formula car series have proven the success and confidence amongst the racing teams.
The New Generation 2822 series shock is based on the proven technology of the 2812
series two-way adjustable damper having been used by many race teams during the
many years of it’s existence.
DAMPER TYPE
The 2822 series shock is a double-walled, high-pressure gas, hydraulic shock absorber.
Specifically designed for competition purposes, it is fully adjustable while mounted on the
car. It contains two adjusters in bump (compression) and two in rebound (extension), both
having an independent low-speed, as well as high-speed adjustment. Its precision adjustment mechanism allows the maximum control possible over the damping forces generated.
LOW SPEED
On modern racing cars, the mean piston speeds the dampers are running at are very low. As a result, precise control over the damping forces at low speeds is very important. This in turn means that very small flows of oil have to be controlled. In many racing shock
designs, a needle valve is used to try and achieve this function. Such a simple mechanism
has many drawbacks. For KONI, repeatability, consistency and ease of use are a must
for any quality racing shock absorber. To achieve it, the 2822 series use superior and advanced adjustment cartridges that control the opening and closing of valve-loaded ports.
These two cartridges are contained in the piston, one for bump and one for rebound,
operating totally independent of each other. Both of these cartridges have eight position
adjustments available, generating a total of 64 predefined damping curves. Distinct stops
(clicks) assure that each port can be either open or closed. Thus, total repeatability of
performance is engineered into the damper, with no need for any type of calibration. A
unique feature is that the low-speed damping is created in two stages, one by predefined
bleed holes and the other by ports.
HIGH SPEED
With bigger movements occurring, such as driving over rumble strips, the high-speed
damping becomes important. The suspension needs to be able to move instead of becoming solid due to too much damping. Two cartridges fitted into the outer cylinder control the
high-speed damping and adjustment. They allow the damping to have an adjustable blow-off force. Also, these cartridges operate totally independent of each other and feature eight positions, all being predefined and having distinct stops.
The adjustment range of all four cartridges is wide and divided in equal steps. Figure 1 shows the adjustment steps in rebound with the low speed adjuster set to position one and
ad- high-speed adjuster set to position eight and adjusting the eight steps in low speed.
Due to the many configurations available, Length and Stroke information will be provided by a Truechoice Representative.

SUSPENSION - KONI SHOCKS
Forces in Bump and Rebound generated by piston area, not effected by
rod displacement
This is indeed a unique feature! Other shock absorber manufacturers make use of
the rod displacement to generate the bump forces. The oil flow in that case is always
smaller than the oil flow created by the piston ring area. Many of these type of shocks
take a larger diameter piston rod to get a greater and better-controllable flow. The
negative side effects of a larger rod, however, are not mentioned. To name a few:
•a greater travel of the floating piston (which divides the gas from the oil) and consequently causes a shorter life span.
8 repeatable positions in each adjuster with positive-lock detents
When setting up the suspension of the car, it is a must to have a clear knowledge of
which position is being used and what the results are. Having 20 or more clicks does
not help to get a clear view, especially when the outcome of each click differs each
time. KONI dampers, therefore, only have 8 very distinct positions, with positive-lock
detents designed to always give the same outcome per position.
No need for external
reservoir
Many damper configurations make use of a remote
reservoir a must as the
bump forces are adjusted by
choking the oil flow passing
through on its way to the
reservoir. External reservoirs
become superfluous, as only
the ring area creates all forces. Needless to say that this
makes the damper lighter
and results in a simple and
clean installation.
•bulky reservoirs to accommodate the greater flow of oil
•smaller ring area on the piston for proper rebound
•higher hydraulic pressures needed to reach an equivalent rebound force than with the use of smaller rods, or the need for bigger pistons.
KONI has designed the damper to avoid these negative side effects. The rod displacement has no effect whatsoever and all forces are generated by the best possible
oil flow.
Negligible phase lag
A large piston ring area, combined with a small diameter piston rod and high gas
pressure, gives negligible phase lag (hysteresis). Or, in simple terms, a negligible delay
in damping response time against damper movement. When using a remote reservoir
this phase lag only increases, as more oil can be compressed (and sometimes the tube
between the cylinder and remote reservoir is slightly flexing as well). KONI uses the
best possible combination to give as little phase lag as possible.
Low Speed damping in 2 stages (bleed holes and ports), no needle valves
Many manufacturers only
use the number or size of
bleed holes to adjust the
low speed damping. Several also do this through
a tapered-shaped needle.
Such a configuration is
not consistent enough
and very sensitive to tolerances and temperatures.
KONI uses fixed bleed
holes in combination
with valve-loaded ports.
Each port can even be
combined with a specific bleed hole diameter.
These ports are either
opened or closed when adjusting and thus ensure total repeatability and consistency
in each adjustment position.
Wide adjustment range in equal steps
Through the great flexibility and configuration of both the high-speed as well as
the low-speed adjustment cartridges, a wide adjustment in equal steps can be
designed. This wide range diminishes the necessity of having different shocks for
different tracks.
Adjustable spring platform
Adjustable spring platforms are a must to setup the correct ride height and/or spring
preload. KONI uses a trapezium-shaped
thread to have a bigger thread surface and
consequently a smaller load on the thread
and less force to adjust the platform. With
each full turn, the platform height changes
by 2 mm (0.08”).
Matches 2” and 2 1/4” springs
The lay out of the damper and the spring
platforms make it possible to fit 2” or 2
1/4” internal diameter springs. In case the
spring is being fitted on top of the housing,
like on the Dallara front dampers, the
spring diameter decreases to 1.4” ID.
Works in any position
Although the 2822 is a double-wall damper, the
Low Speed Adjustment
design is based on a pure high-pressure mono
tube layout, knowing that oil is separated from
gas by a floating piston, which enables the damper to be used in any position.
Light weight
Not only the absence of a remote reservoir, but also the choice of construction materials
makes it a lightweight damper. Compared to dampers with a remote reservoir, the difference in weight could be
as high as 30%.
Hard anodized parts
All the parts that are
either prone to easily
getting damaged or are
vital importance for durability, have been hard
anodized. Although more
expensive, anodizing
critical parts results in a
damper that lasts.
Factory assembled and calibrated adjustment cartridges
All shim stack assemblies, which determine
the final damping characteristics, are
factory assembled as well as calibrated,
to ensure the correct graph after assembly
of the damper. Although the assembly of
the damper is a job to be done by certified
personnel only, it makes the outcome of the
characteristic foolproof and the need for
calibration on a shock dyno is eliminated.
Low-speed adjustment in both
Bump and Rebound independently
The configuration of the damper enables
adjusting the rebound damping in low
High Speed Adjustment
speed without any impact whatsoever on
the bump characteristics and vice versa.
This makes suspension tests all the more clear and easy to get the optimum in handling.
High-speed adjustment in both Bump and Rebound independently
As with the low-speed damping, also the high-speed works totally independent in bump and
rebound, having all of the same advantages (see low-speed adjustment above).
Tailor made and individually tested
Race dampers do need
that extra bit more of attention and precision as they are being used under extreme
conditions and always required to give the optimum performance. Therefore, all
KONI race shocks are tailor-made to customer requirements and individually assembled and tested, thus living up to the expectations demanded of KONI shocks
over the last century.
Highest quality standards
All of the above, as well as the name and fame of KONI products, can only be secured
by using the highest quality standards available in the market of automotive shock absorber production. Standards such as ISO 9001, QS 9000, ISO 14001, Ford QS1 and
numerous quality certificates are met and kept within the KONI organization.

SUSPENSION - KONI SHOCKS
2812 MK II RACING DAMPER
Never a company to leave well enough alone, Koni introduced the latest
member of its 28 Series family of racing dampers, the 2812 MK II, after
sensing that it already had a good design in the original 2812 package.
Koni went looking for ways to make incremental improvements on the
original and three design areas were attacked — weight, friction, and precision. The results show the goal was met! Lighter weight materials were used
throughout the shock with durability maintained. The friction challenge was
met by using state-of-the-art composite materials in key internal components.
Precision was improved through splined, rather than keyed, mechanisms. In
all, a much-improved step forward from the already great 2812.

The 28 series damper achieves this by utilizing an advanced design cartridge that controls the opening and closing of valve loaded ports. Positive lock detents assure that that each port can only be open or closed.
The result is the cartridges will always accurately reproduce a set of eight
pre-determined damping curves. Various bump and rebound cartridges
are available, each with their own characteristics.
Drivers like the 28 series because they feel a real difference between
adjustment steps. Mechanics and race engineers appreciate the user
friendliness and apparent “simplicity” of the dampers that make them so
easy to work with.

In modern racing applications damper sensitivity, reliability, repeatability
and ease of use are a must. The design and operation of the 28 series
racing dampers is unique proof of Koni’s reputation as the leader in the
field of damper technology. The 2812 series are specifically designed for
these purposes and have proven track records in Formula One, Indy Car,
Sportscars, Vintage Cars and many others. They are specifically designed
for competition purposes and offer full adjustability while fitted to the car.
Their precision adjustment mechanisms allow for maximum control possible over the damping forces generated.
A pair of cartridges is housed in the main piston, one for bump, one
for rebound. Together they can modify any given basic valving in 64
different ways. By having all forces generated by the piston assembly, the
control of the damper over the suspension is instant and precise, decisive
and smooth. A separate bulky reservoir is not needed and the installation
can be kept simple, compact, lightweight and clean.

PDQ MOUNTING EYE - FOR THE 3012/11 SERIES
The PDQ eye is an alternate fixing device made for the 3012/11 range of damper. With the advent of the PDQ eye, it is no
longer necessary to remove the damper from the car to adjust bump damping. In this design, the piston rod does not thread
directly into the eye the way it normally does; rather it is threaded into a disk which is able to rotate freely within the body of
the eye. This option is available for all new 3012 dampers and can be retro fitted onto any existing 3012 already in service.
An essential add-on for quick bump adjustments. Ideal for short practice sessions to get the most out of the handling. Part # KONPDQ - $175.00 Each

KONI SPA1
TECHNOLOGY FOR
THE DRAG RACER
The KONI Drag Racing Shock Absorber
Series SPA1 has long been the mainstay on
the professional circuit due to their unique
technology in both single- and double-adjustable
damper technology.
KONI surpasses the old 90/10 theory.
The KONI SPA1 series of drag-racing-only shock
absorbers is a complete departure from the old
“90/10” theory which is no longer valid to the
modern drag racing competitor. The old thinking
was to have the vehicle’s front end rise quickly
and stay there to promote as much weight
transfer as possible to the rear wheels. This was
achieved by virtually no damper rebound forces
(10) and a great deal of bump force (90). The
theory was to hold the front suspension up to
maintain that “bite” to the rear tires. Problem
was, the high front end destroyed any attempt
at proper aerodynamics and E.T.’s suffered as
a result.
The KONI SPA1 series of drag racing shocks rewrite the old theory in several ways. First, there is
virtually no bump (compression) damping, allowing the front end to settle quicker and restoring
the proper nose-down attitude that is essential for
clean air flow over the car. Second, the rebound
(extension) forces are made velocity sensitive,
meaning the forces increase at a rate directly
proportionate to the shock’s piston speed.
On a dry surface with good hookup, the amount
of lift generated by initial launch is very sudden
and quite violent. The velocity sensitive KONI
SPA1 reacts instantly to dampen this lift, avoiding
bogging caused by too much weight transfer. It is
all accomplished by good shock design, proper
tuning and KONI’s fresh look at old theories.
In another condition, a slick surface would
provide less lift and tire shock, so the SPA1 then
allows more movement of the front end since the
lack of initial traction does not lift the chassis as
violently. This gentle impulse does not activate
the higher speed circuit of the SPA1 valving, and
allows more front to rear weight transfer resulting
in better bite. SPA1 drag shocks have five settings
that enable you to tune your chassis for the best
front to rear weight transfer.
For KONI rear SPA1 shocks the new technology
has brought about a big difference. The rear
shock now has nearly zero bump (compression)
damping, but the rebound damping is now
digressive. This means they are designed to degress, or “blow off,” at high piston speeds. This
prevents the possibility of grossly over-dampening
the rear suspension on initial launch which would
pick up the rear wheels causing a loss of traction.
The rear SPA1 KONI will “blow off” and then
allow proper unwinding of the rear suspension.
ELECTRIC DRAG SHOCK ABSORBER
Electric Adjustable Coil Over Shock
A driver-activated remote switch instantly increases or decreases rebound damping forces. Connection is made via a microprocessor to an electric servo motor, built into the piston rod. The adjustable
spring platform accepts, a 2 1/4” I.D. spring, or when used with the nylon adapters accepts a 2 1/2”
spring. It is supplied with a 2 5/32” (1 9/16” for 8216-2027) thick bump rubber.

Since racing dampers are usually required to limit the travel of the
suspension, all Koni racing dampers come supplied with a speciallydesigned cellular polyurethane bump stop. This provides safe and
controlled bottoming of the suspension as well as preventing internal
damage within the damper from metal-to-metal contact. Between races
it is good practice to inspect the bump rubbers. If they show signs of
deterioration, they should be replaced.

TRUECHOICE is an authorized KONI
racing distributor and service center. Our
KONI factory-trained technicians are
able to provide a wide range of services,
including:
Dyno Testing
We operate a shock absorber dynamometer to
measure and evaluate a number of performance
parameters. The only way you can gauge the
condition of your shock absorbers is to dyno test.
Spring Testing Service
A TRUECHOICE KONI shock service technician will place
your shock on our KONI Shock dynamometer, testing the
bump and rebound. The machine plots out the shock’s
response on a graph (above) to have a visual record of the
shock’s performance. This graph is of a 2812 double-adjustable shock and illustrates the range of adjustment in both
bump and rebound.
All springs should be tested on a regular basis to
check their integrity. TRUECHOICE will perform
this service using our modern testing equipment.
Service
KONI Shock Absorbers, in most cases, are fully
rebuildable. Like any component with moving
parts, there is a maintenance factor involved.
All shock absorbers should be checked and
serviced if necessary on a regular basis to
ensure optimum performance throughout an
event. TRUECHOICE stocks all of the necessary
parts and equipment to keep your KONI Shock
Absorbers in winning condition.
Revalve Service
It is vital that the damping rate of the shock
absorber be in harmony with the spring rate and
unsprung mass of the vehicle on whatever track
you are racing. TRUECHOICE will recommend
settings and revalve your shock absorbers to suit
all applications (not available on all series of
shock absorbers).
Suspension Engineering Services
Shock absorbers are the heart of any race car’s suspension system! Truechoice/KONI Racing Services
is an engineering service designed to help assist you in getting the most out of your investment in
KONI racing shock absorbers.
We can tailor a special program to encompass race car setup, testing and analysis. KONI racing

PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION KITS
Combining technology from the
world’s leading manufacturers of
suspension components, along with
years of racing-bred suspension
knowledge, Truechoice has
developed a Suspension Solution
for all phases of street, sport and
competition driving. What racing
background? How about the hot
GrandAm Koni Challenge Series as
our ultimate proving ground, and a
host of happy winners contesting
many SCCA and vintage race car
competitions, with cars utilizing
Truechoice, Koni shock and Eibach
spring technology. We do stand by
our performance record!
There are many considerations to evaluate when choosing
a performance package for a street-based car. To help
your decision of how radical a suspension modification
you should make based upon what type of driving and
or racing you will be performing, Truechoice Suspension
Solutions are broken down into different phases. Each
phase is based on the best components for that level of
performance and acts as a starting point from which you
can build into the next phase if desired.
Standard Koni Sport shocks are backed by Koni’s Factory warranty. In most
cases, Koni Sport shocks can be rebuilt and revalved at Truechoice. Our
factory-trained technicians and suspension specialists have the knowledge
and the expertise to ensure that you arrive at the best solution for the level of
performance you are seeking for your car.
Koni Sport Shocks are designed for aggressive driving while continuing to
offer driving comfort. The Koni Sport Shocks are manufactured to act as an
upgrade unit for many stock applications. All of the Koni Sport Shocks offer
adjustability in rebound and some models offer adjustability in both bump
compression and rebound.
Eibach Pro-Kit and Sportline performance springs are designed to improve the
looks and handling of production cars. Pro-Kit springs are designed to lower
cars anywhere from .75” to 1.5”, to provide the ultimate balance of comfort
and handling. Sportline springs offer an increased drop from 1.5” to 2”,
or as low as you can safely go on a street car, adding an aggressive level
of ride comfort and handling. For more information on Eibach Pro-Kits and
Sportline springs, see the Eibach product pages in this catalog.

SUGGESTED ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE FOR ROAD COURSE USE
ADJUSTING THE BUMP DAMPING CONTROL
Bump damping controls the unsprung weight of the vehicle (wheels, axles, etc.) It controls the upward
movement of the suspension as when hitting a bump in the track. It should not be used to control downward
movement of the vehicle when it encounters dips. Also, it should not be used to control roll or bottoming.
Depending on the vehicle, the ideal bump setting can occur at any point within the adjustment range. This setting will be reached when “side-hop” or “walking” in a bumpy turn is minimal and the ride is not uncomfortably
harsh. At any point other than this ideal setting, the ‘side-hopping’ condition will be more pronounced and the
ride may be too harsh.
STEP 1: Set all four dampers on minimum bump and minimum rebound settings.
STEP 2: Drive one or two laps to get the feel of the car. NOTE: When driving the car during the bump adjustment
phase, disregard body lean or roll and concentrate solely on how the car feels over bumps. Also, try to notice if
the car “walks” or “side-hops” on a rough turn.
STEP 3: Increase bump adjustment clockwise 3 clicks on all four dampers. Drive the car one or two laps. Repeat
Step 3 until a point is reached where the car starts to feel hard over bumpy surfaces.
STEP 4: Back off the bump adjustment two clicks. The bump control is now set. NOTE: The back off point will
probably be reached sooner on one end of the vehicle than the other. If this occurs, keep increasing the bump on
the soft end until it, too, feels hard. Then back it off 2 clicks. The bump control is now set.
ADJUSTING THE REBOUND DAMPING CONTROL
Once you have found what you feel to be the best bump setting on all four wheels, you are now ready to proceed
with adjusting the rebound. The primary function of rebound damping is to control or slow down the undesirable oscillations of the spring or torque tube. The rebound damping controls the transitional roll (lean) as when
entering a turn.
It should be noted that too much rebound on either end of the vehicle will cause an initial loss of lateral acceleration (cornering power) at that end which will cause the vehicle to oversteer or understeer excessively when entering a turn. It does not limit the total amount of roll; it does limit how fast this total roll angle is achieved. How much
the vehicle actually leans is determined by other things such as spring rate, sway bars, roll center heights, etc.
Too much rebound control in relation to spring rate will cause a condition known as “jacking down.” This is a
condition where, after hitting a bump and compressing the spring, the damper does not allow the spring to return
to a neutral position before the next bump is encountered. This repeats with each subsequent bump until the car
is actually lowered onto the bump stops. Contact with the bump stops causes a drastic increase in roll stiffness. If
this condition occurs on the front, the car will understeer; if it occurs on the rear, the car will oversteer.
STEP 1: With the rebound set on full soft and the bump control set from your testing, drive the car one or two laps.
Paying attention to how the car rolls when entering a turn.
STEP 2: Increase rebound damping three sweeps on all four dampers and drive the car one or two laps. Repeat
Step 2 until the car enters the turns smoothly (no drastic attitude changes) and without leaning excessively. Any
increase in the rebound stiffness beyond this point is unnecessary and may in fact be detrimental.
EXCEPTION: It may be desirable to have a car that assumes an oversteering or understeering attitude when entering a turn. This preference, of course, will vary from one driver to another depending on individual driving style.
ROAD RACING/AUTOCROSS SHOCK ADJUSTMENT TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE
The following is a guide to try to fix handling problems AFTER the car’s
initial setup has already been found.
FRONT: REBOUND
Setting is too firm - Can cause the car to “jack down” which can cause
the driver to think the car is too firm in compression. Can also cause
a lack in grip from the tire not separating from the chassis fast enough
and cause the car to understeer. Setting is too soft - Though a soft rebound setting will allow better compliance with the road, the car may
feel floaty or excessively oscillate after hitting bumps.
FRONT: COMPRESSION
Setting is too firm - Can cause the car to feel skittish and lose grip over
rough sections of pavement. Can cause outside tire to be loaded too
quickly. The car won’t stabilize in a turn. Setting is to Soft - Can cause
a corner entry understeer. Can possibly cause excessive suspension
movement.
REAR: REBOUND
Setting is too firm - Can cause a snap over steer on corner entry from
rear tires losing contact on bumps. Can also cause the car to “jack
down” in the rear and lose grip. Setting is too soft - Can cause a corner entry oversteer and corner exit oversteer. Vehicle may feel floaty
or excessively oscillate after hitting bumps.
REAR: COMPRESSION
Setting is too firm - Can cause the car to have a snap oversteer, especially on mid-corner bumps. Car won’t feel stable in turn and skittish on
rough pavement. Setting is too soft - Can cause corner exit understeer
and possible excessive suspension movement.
SHOCK ADJUSTMENT
TROUBLE SHOOTING
GUIDE NOTES:
1.When changing to firmer springs, the
shocks usually need to be set firmer for rebound and softer for compression damping
2. On rainy or slick tracks, softening the
compression damping will help to delay initial loading on the tire which increases grip.
This is a guide for Shock Setup only.
Other factors such as the spring
rates, sway bars, alignement and
tire pressures will also have an affect on thr handling of the vehicle.
SPHERICAL BEARINGMOUNTING AND
CAMBER PLATE GUIDE
For applications that use an upper
spherical bearing mount or camber plate, please check the following points for adequate clearance
through the entire range of suspension travel.
• Make certain that the mounting hardware does not contact the outer bearing
race or the housing that retains the bearing. The mounting hardware includes any
nut, washer or spacers that are used to
locate the mounting pin in the bearing.
• Make certain that the retaining clip for
the bearing does not contact the piston rod
shoulder or mounting hardware.

8041RACE Series
Bolt-in Applications
The RACE series dampers are designed as a bolt-in application for those
running either in high performance driving events, road racing or autocross.
They are externally adjustable in rebound damping and can be adjusted on
the car. They are designed to work with the extreme high-performance spring
rates up to 1000 lbs. with coil-over sleeve setups. These shocks come with
factory style perches but will also work with Koni coil-over sleeve systems
seen elsewhere in this catalog.
Also, these shocks have been shortened to give additional travel in the
suspension to work with the lowered ride heights. This gives the dampers
additional travel and keeps the car from bottoming out. The measurement
given in the table below is the amount the shocks are made compared with
the factory length dampers.

PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION KITS
KONI Threaded Suspension Kits include four KONI Sport-valved struts and/or shocks featuring threaded,
adjustable, lower spring perches (where applicable) and progressive rate, lowering springs designed for performance street driving. The kits are engineered in a joint effort with KONI divisions in Holland, Germany, and
North America. Testing of the kits was done on the famed, high-speed German Autobahns.
These kits were designed to give the vehicle a preferred ride height of 1.5” to 2.0” below stock, but the
threading range allows the owner to make the ride height considerably higher or lower. Additionally, the
car can be run low in the summer and then raised for winter driving. It is always recommended that the kits
be installed with bump rubbers because the threaded range of perch adjustment may allow the vehicle to sit
low enough (for show or display purposes) to risk bottoming the shock’s internal parts without them. Also,
care should be taken in setting ride height so as to not allow oversized rims and tires to rub on the car’s inner
fender, etc.

Suspension Worksheet
In order to determine a basic spring setup, two important
inputs are required: WHEEL RATE and SUSPENSION
FREQUENCY.
Step 3: Suspension Frequency
In order to determine WHEEL RATE and SUSPENSION
FREQUENCY, you must first determine MOTION RATIO.
A different formula is needed for the type of suspension your
race vehicle utilizes, A-arm or Beam axle. See Step 1. Please
take into consideration the ANGLE CORRECTION FACTOR
(shown in step 1) in your computation.
Suspension Frequency
SF Suspension Frequency (cpm)
WRWheel Rate (lbs./in.)
SprungVehicle corner weight
Weightless unsprung weight
WHEEL RATE is the actual rate of a spring acting at the tire
contact patch. This value is measured in lbs./in., just as spring
rate is determined by using the formula below. See Step 2.
SUSPENSION FREQUENCY refers to the number of
ciliations or “cycles” of the suspension over a fixed time period
when a load is applied to a vehicle. See step 3.
Step 1: Motion Ratio
A-arm Suspension (See Diagram 1)
MRMotion Ration

Diagram 1 (A-arm Suspension)
The motion Ratio is a lever arm effect of the control arm acting on the
spring. If the spring is mounted at an angle, the reduced motion of the
spring must also be taken into account.

The motion Ratio of a live axle setup is shown here. Over twowheel bumps, the motion ratio is 1:1. Over single-wheel bumps and
during body roll, the motion ratio is as shown in Step 1. The motion
ratio is only used for calculating roll resistance, not for suspension
frequencies.

Let’s start with suspension coils on
the winning car at every Indianapolis
500—since 1964. Beyond that,
champions of Formula One, CART,
IRL, NASCAR, Endurance Sports
Cars, Off-Road, Grass Roots Oval
Track (dirt and asphalt), along with a
wide variety of others, have benefited
from the proven Performance Advantage found in every Hyperco product.
With today’s racing environment
more demanding than ever before, no
one component can be less than perfect. The demands on suspension coils
have reached a peak with today’s
modern suspension technology. Hyperco is the one manufacturer, known
around the world, as the company
that devotes the necessary resources
and the one-to-one customer service
needed to produce the optimum
suspension coils that will meet the
highest demands of today’s winning
race teams.
Properly engineered and manufactured suspension coils will not lose free length or installed height under normal racing conditions.
At Hyperco, our focus is always on innovation. Always researching. Always developing. Testing new ways to improve
performance. In fact, we’re not just coiling springs, we’re engineering suspension coils, along with other components that
ultimately offer racers our Performance Advantage.
While other companies offer springs as a part of their expanding product line, Hyperco’s focus is on high performance
suspension coils. We recognize that the balance and the handling of any race car must be at its optimum for winning
results. That’s why we’re dedicated to being the source, world wide, for high performance suspension coils. Customers can
be assured we are not distracted by other products; trying to be all things to all people. Our team of specialists continually work to realize a component that is at its absolute state-of-the-art potential for every application and environment. We
continue to combine the finest engineers and craftsmen with the latest manufacturing technology in the industry. We utilize
the latest in design and performance simulation software, along with multi axis rate and load testing equipment to measure
overall dynamic performance.
What’s more, Hyperco manufactures from materials that are not found in a mill’s standard inventory. This allows our
engineers to design suspension coils to optimum specifications with the largest variety of wire diameters available today.
We also manufacture from a wide variety of materials including ultra high tensile chrome silicon, micro alloys, titanium,
alloy steels and stainless. Multiple magnaflux inspections, before and after coiling, are used to ensure the wire is free from
surface imperfections which, undetected, could lead to spring failure.
Collectively, this combination of professionals and resources affords Hyperco a versatile, innovative facility and, most
importantly, it’s earned us the ability to offer the racing world consistent performance, exclusive technological advancements and reliability. What’s more, from coil-over and conventionals to specialty and custom, Hyperco also works with
race teams one-to-one, to develop custom and proprietary products. As a result, more and more teams are benefiting from
the Performance Advantage found only with Hyperco suspension coils.
That’s why Hyperco is the world wide leader in high performance suspension coils and related components.
