REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2012-2013 |5 Richard Venn Ted Sokolsky Strengthening our Community The Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto, UJA Federation’s planned giving and endowment arm, is a unique and transformative centre that acts as a true catalyst for change. In doing so it helps support and grow one of the world’s great Diaspora communities. By mobilizing and educating donors and other community leaders about complex quality of life issues in Jewish Toronto, Israel and across the Jewish world, and providing them with creative and inspiring ways to become involved, the Jewish Foundation continues to change the world. A STRONG FOUNDATION An endowment fund at the Jewish Foundation provides donors with all the flexibility, involvement, and recognition of a private foundation while alleviating the stress that goes with financial stewardship responsibilities. Foundation donors are better able to focus their energies on creating positive change while Foundation professionals offer knowledge and support that like our community, is second to none. Regardless of the vehicle donors choose to reach out to those in need; be it through lifetime gifts or deferred giving programs, donors are given the unique and rewarding opportunity to write a chapter in the ongoing and inspiring story that is Jewish Toronto. On behalf of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, we thank each of you – our generous, compassionate and visionary donors and partners, for your ongoing commitment to tikkun olam and for helping make Jewish Toronto a flourishing and vibrant Jewish community for generations to come. As a community, we can create these perpetual resources in order to have the means to support social services, health, welfare, and education throughout the Jewish community here and in Israel. Don leads by example. In addition to his work with the Jewish Foundation, Don Bennett is a dedicated UJA annual for the rosenthals, giving is a family affair campaign volunteer. Any mishluach is accommodated. We are certain our children and future generations will do as we do because it is in our blood. We are all survivors!” Societies Have Shown Us So Much For well over a hundred years, Toronto’s Jewish community has been strengthened by our Societies. These Mutual Benefit Societies helped, and continue to help make Toronto a place where Jews can f lourish and prosper – a place that is one of the most vibrant, growing Diaspora Jewish communities in the world. Societies are part of our history, our present and our future and are devoted to tzedakah and acts of kindness. Paula and Joseph z”l Krakowsky both grew up in Chenstochova, Poland, and Philip Platt of the Kieltzer Sick Benefits Society on the Bridge of Hope at the Lipa Green Centre We thank the following societies for establishing endowment funds. After surviving the horrors of the Holocaust with almost no family, but a lot of optimism and fond memories of their parents’ kind gestures, they married and moved to Germany to start a family of their own. With their son Harry, they moved to Israel and then eventually to Canada where they settled and welcomed a daughter, Rosalind Reznick. As strangers in a new country, with no extended family or friends, the Chenstochover Aid Society welcomed the Krakowsky family with open arms. The Society’s membership, comprised of survivors and children of survivors and their children, work together to maintain a link with the past, in order to ensure continued existence of the Society in the future. The Society became a family, and a family affair, with weddings and bar mitzvahs with all in attendance. REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2012-2013 | 29 B ’n ai Tz ed ek d o ll ar s@ w o rk B’NAI TZEDEK TEEN PHILANTHR PY Our Mission: Our Vision: Engage Jewish teens in a lifelong relationship with tzedakah and tikkun olam (repairing the world) and help cultivate future leaders within the Jewish community. Laurie Davis PU TT IN G TH E M IT Z VA H Chair IN TO “Seeing how my children’s participation in B’nai Tzedek has helped shape each of them into caring, community-minded young adults – I was inspired to join the B’nai Tzedek leadership team. This program is so important because it introduces the next generation, our children, to the values and rewards of tzedakah and giving back to the community.” B A R B AT AN D To give teens the power to make a difference through tzedakah and deepen their commitment to social action. M IT Z VA H Through B’nai Tzedek, teenagers are able to establish a charitable fund in their own name with a minimum donation of $1,000. Our teen philanthropists learn about projects that need funding and then decide how they want to distribute their charitable dollars. By exposing teens to this outstanding learning process, they become actively involved in philanthropy and feel good about their role in improving the world. B’nai Tzedek is one more gift you can give to your children — it’s the gift of giving. Nearly 300 youngsters between the ages of 6-13 at the Zipori Elementary school are benefitting from a recently renovated basketball court, thanks to Gabe Yallen’s Tzedakah Fund. Kids are playing basketball throughout the school day and additional age groups use the court after school hours and on the weekend. why they got involved... “I am happy to help people who are less fortunate than I because it is important to give back to the world. I want to help kids learn with the use of a computer or tablet.” Seth Damiani “I have learned from my parents the importance of being charitable and always helping those in need, particularly in the Jewish Community in Toronto and in Israel. My Fund is my commitment to perform tikkun olam each year.” Hannah Goodman Kellie and Lauren are at J-SERVE 2013: the Jewish day of youth service as volunteer participants representing B’nai Tzedek. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Kellie and Lauren Grammer Kellie and Lauren joined the B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy program in 2007 at the time of their bat mitzvahs, and remained involved throughout their teen years. They served as teen chairs of “I’m a huge sports fan. I like to watch lots of different sports, especially B’nai Tzedek from 2011-2013. As leaders, they encouraged others give kids in Bat Yam, Israel, a chance to enjoy shooting hoops like me. Bat Yam to university, we thank Kellie and Lauren for their dedication and football (Go Steelers!), and I really love playing basketball. I’d like to help to participate, get involved and make a difference. As they head off has a large population of underprivileged children, many of them Ethiopian hard work. Jews, who gain so much from playing basketball.” Gabe Yallen 30 | JEWISH FOUNDATION OF GREATER TORONTO For more information about the B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy program, please contact Angela D’Aversa at 416-631-5833, bnaitzedek@ujafed.org or visit www.bnaitzedek.ca.
