THE GOOD NEWS OF
EMMANUEL
OCTOBER 2015
Amy’s going to walk into our church this fall.
She’s a newcomer, but she may have visited last year too. Do
you remember her?
It’s mid September, the tables are set, the buffet table’s filled
with delicious food, and each table is filled with good friends who
are part of your congregation. Amy’s nervous, and more than a
little anxious as she arrives. Who will she talk to? Will anyone
want to talk to her? It’s her first time attending an event at your
church and she doesn’t know anybody.
It soon becomes clear that nobody knows her either. All the
people greet each other warmly, chat about their families, and let
Amy wander alone to find an open seat. The greeter says hello,
then returns to a focused discussion with her friend. As Amy
goes through the buffet line she greets the people nearby and
they reciprocate, but she is still unable to break into their
conversations—and no one invites her to. The knot in her
stomach tightens as a feeling of rejection begins to grow. She is
grateful when the speaker starts talking and contemplates
sneaking out the door. It seems obvious that no one will notice,
and certainly they won’t care. But she stays until the end, walks
to her car alone, closes the door, and then the tears begin to
flow…
Family Promise Update October 2015
Volunteer Training:
Mark Sexton, Family Promise of Brevard, Inc., Program
Services Coordinator, will be providing training for all Family
Promise Volunteers and anyone interested in joining our
volunteer staff on Saturday, October 17, 2015 from 12:30 –
2:30 pm in Corton Hall. There have been a series of changes
since we first began our ministry and we have many new
volunteers. Mark is the person who interviews the families and
assists them with entering the program. He is a wealth of
knowledge and will assist us with understanding the best way
to interact with the families we serve. A light snack will be
served. Please contact Nannette Bell or Virginia Drake if you
are able to attend. Our next host week is November 1 – 8,
2015.
IMPORTANT ALERT!
IF YOU ARE AN ADULT MALE AND YOU ATTEND
WORSHIP SERVICES ON SUNDAY,
YOU ARE SET FOR LIFE
Amy’s the outsider, the newcomer, and the unknown one at
your church this fall. Do you remember her?
AS A UNITED METHODIST MEN’S
This story you just read could have been written about us, but it
wasn’t. Did the people at the church gathering mean to make her
cry? Of course not. They were nice and well meaning and I’m
sure they would be more than a little perplexed to discover their
perfectly planned gathering made her cry. After all, they had
been friendly.

HELPING MEN GROW IN CHRIST,
SO OTHERS MAY KNOW CHRIST
But being friendly wasn’t enough.
Why? The problem was no one taught them how
to befriend. Being friendly can initiate a superficial “I’m fine”
kind of relationship, but what Amy (and you and I) desperately
need is the more vulnerable and intimate “let me tell you what
I’m struggling with” friendship.
CHRISTIAN OUTREACH
Christian Outreach will again be sponsoring our Trunk of
Treat event taking place on October 25, 2015. Sign up
forms are available to groups and individuals who wish
to display a car for this fun event. Each car will provide
start up candy and as an alternative, there is an
opportunity to hand out meaningful agape to each family
(adult). The instructions for making the agape have
been given to many of the previous years’ car hosts and
are available in the office. This is also an appeal to the
congregation for individually wrapped pieces of candy,
gum, etc. (no homemade items please) to assure there
is enough candy to pass out to our guests. Any
questions? Please ask Marianne!
Grab a folding chair (or 2)
Buy a couple of bags of candy
Get your ministry handout ready
Drive up to church and park
Open trunk
Open chair
Open your hand to share treats with neighborhood
kids
To befriend involves taking certain actions to invite a stranger
to become a friend. It means being willing to “live in the
trenches” of life together and accepting and loving others
right where they’re at. Amy didn’t cry because she felt the
people were unfriendly. She cried because she felt
unaccepted, unloved, and unknown.
1. Remember your Amy experiences. Everyone has been
the new person at some point. Remember what it feels like to
be an Amy. Consider ways to help newcomers feel more
accepted and welcomed.

Emmanuel is considering how we will go forward to replace the
failed water and sewer lines, and to make our restrooms
accessible to those who use walkers, canes or wheelchairs. This
is an expensive project. We are striving to raise the needed
money so we can welcome everyone to our church, regardless of
ability.
There is a $12,000 matching grant waiting for us to match first,
and then possibly $10,000+ needed beyond that matched
amount. Consider your part in making our church restrooms
accessible to all—maybe even to you or your loved ones. Join the
others who have already stepped up in bold ways to answer God

SIGNUPS
Come and join in
the fun.
Signup sheets for time that you can
meet and greet customers to our
patch will be available between
Sunday Services and during
unloading.
Did you know that demographically our
church is smack dab in the middle of the
poorest region of Brevard County? It is for
this reason that the Genesis Pantry was
one of 12 local churches chosen to receive
a wonderful gift of $1,250 from The United Way. What a
blessing and surprise!!
We are both very busy and very blessed. It is now the middle of
Sept. and, to this date, we have served 1618 adults and 949
children this year.
We are looking forward to our semi-annual food drive at Walmart
on Oct. 3rd. These food drives, along with your wonderful
donations, are what keeps the Genesis Pantry going.
God Bless you all and Thank You for all your support.

We had a
very
good
time
and
good food at
San Remo’s in September. We will
be going to Dustin’s Barbecue, on
Wickham Rd. on October 13.
Attendance has been low for the
last few months, maybe due to the
“Snowbirds” being up north. We
hope to have a larger attendance
this month and in the future.
Please call Evelyn Sansom before
Tuesday, October 12 so we can
have an accurate count. Thanks,
see you there!
