Nutritional Practice
Session 9
Information contained in this seminar series
should not be construed as a claim or
representation that any procedure or
product mentioned constitutes a specific
cure, palliative or ameliorative, for any
condition.
Having completed our review of the Symptoms Survey, we will move
into a powerful clinical tool. Purification. Removing toxins, poor food
choices, and encouraging healthy changes is the bedrock of truly
encouraging a more sustainable lifestyle for our patients.
Remember it is the habits of the patient that cause the
cascade of ill health as it is also the habits that support
good health.
Exercise “can be as good as pills” for
people with conditions such as heart
disease.
• Physical activity rivaled some heart
drugs and outperformed stroke
medicine
• Finding suggest exercise should be
added to prescriptions
BMJ –BBC News, Oct. 1, 2013
Lifestyle Changes Could Significantly Decrease Chronic Disease
“More than one billion adults worldwide are overweight, and at least 300
million of these are clinically obese. Up to 80% of cases of coronary
heart disease, 90% of type-2 diabetes cases, and one-third of cancers
can be avoided by changing to a healthier diet, increasing physical
activity and stopping smoking.”

Who needs it?
Environmental Toxins: Poisonous
substances that come from outside of
the body and can be lumped into two
categories:
•Chemicals
•Metals
Chemicals, Pollutants & Pesticides in Umbilical Cord Blood –
EWG 2005
•287 chemicals detected in umbilical cord blood of newborns
• Pesticides, consumer product ingredients, waste materials from burning
coal, gasoline and garbage
• Example: 8 perfluoro chemicals used as stain and oil repellants in fast food
packaging, clothes and textiles (including Teflon chemical PFOA)
• Dozens of widely used brominated flame retardants
• 180 of the 287 chemicals found are known to cause
cancer in humans or animals
• 217 are toxic to the brain & nervous system
• 208 shown to cause birth defects or abnormal
development in animal tests
CDC’s Fourth National Report on Human
Exposure to Environmental Chemicals
Tested 212 chemicals and found ALL to be in
blood and urine of most Americans!
Six chemicals in particular,
found in virtually every
person, were identified by
the CDC as probable
health hazards!
Fatigue
Depression
Headaches
Muscle aches
Cognitive problems such as
brain fog and poor memory
Neurological issues such as
balance problems and
tremors
Symptoms of heavy metal
toxicity include:
Irritability,
Headache
Lethargy,
Fatigue,
Weakness
Abdominal pain,
Tremors,
Kidney distress,
Elevated liver enzymes
Health conditions and
diseases associated with
excessive toxic burden
include:
Allergies & asthma
Diabetes
Obesity
Chemical sensitivity (any adverse
physical, mental or emotional reaction
to the presence of a chemical smell)
Fibromyalgia
Fertility problems & birth
defects
Parkinsonism
Bone marrow cancers such as
lymphoma, leukemia and
multiple myeloma
Chronic infections
Autoimmune diseases such as
lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
“The detoxification system is the main means
by which lipid-soluble toxins are removed from
the body.
By far, the majority of
toxins and drugs are
lipid-soluble
therefore, to be efficiently and safely removed
via urine must be converted to a non-toxic
water-soluble molecule during metabolism.”
Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients > Oct. 2002
Cleanse is:
•Mostly devoid of protein
•Use of laxatives – dehydration
•Too high in sugar due to pure juice usage
“Diets restricted in calories, … as well as those
having low quality protein or high sugar content, can
affect the component enzymes, cytochrome P-450
and the cytochrome P-450 reductase, … In addition,
deficiencies of specific vitamins (riboflavin, ascorbic
acid, and vitamins A and E) and minerals (iron,
copper, zinc, and magnesium) affect the components
and activities of the system.”
Fed Proc. 1986 Feb;45(2):142-8.

Cytochrome P450 system
A ‘Superfamily’ of Enzymes (more than 18,000) that
catalyzes reactions (usually with H+ or O2) to metabolize
thousands of endogenous and exogenous chemicals
•
•
•
•
Some CYPs metabolize only one (or a very few) substrates,
such as CYP19 (aromatase), while others may metabolize
multiple substrates.
Cytochrome P450 enzymes are present in most tissues of the
body (not just the Liver) and are bound in the membrane of
cellular organelles like the mitochondria or Endoplasmic
Reticulum.
CYPs play important roles in hormone synthesis and
breakdown. This directly influences the Endocrine System
Cytochrome P450 enzymes also function to metabolize
potentially toxic compounds, including drugs and products of
endogenous metabolism such as bilirubin, principally in
the liver.
Think of it
as putting things
in the kitchen trash
•
Important Takeaway – Metabolites formed by Phase
1are often more toxic than the initial substrate
(toxin)
Conjugation Reactions – The phase 1 (CYP450)
metabolites are conjugated with charged
molecules that facilitate removal from the cell
such as glutathione (GSH), sulfur, glycine,
or glucuronic acid.

The Standard Process scientists, in collaboration with researchers at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, designed a study to explore how consumption of Spanish black
radish (SBR) affects detoxification in a whole animal model (mice). This study evaluated
three steps of detoxification:
1.
How Spanish black radish in the diet influences Phase I and II gene expression
Liver tissue from the mice that in the SBR-consuming group, four of the nine detoxification
enzymes tested showed a statistical significant increase, compared to zero in the control diet.
2.
How fast a toxin is cleared from the blood
Researchers evaluated how quickly the toxin was cleared from the blood. They report that at the
sixth hour, concentrations of the toxin DMBA were 47 % lower in the blood of mice consuming the
SBR compared to the control mice.
3.
If bone marrow stem cells are protected by dietary inclusion of Spanish black radish
The authors report that at six hours post-treatment, the bone marrow stem cells of the SBR group
were less affected by either the high or low dose of DMBA. And total cell counts at 48 hours had
rebounded significantly in the SBR group compared to the control mice, suggesting a faster
recovery from the toxin exposure.

Functions of Insoluble Fiber
•
move bulk through the
intestines
•
control and balance the pH
(acidity) in the intestines
Benefits of Insoluble Fiber
•
promote regular bowel
movement and
prevent constipation
•
remove waste through
colon in less time
•
Help keep an optimal pH
in intestines
Functions of Soluble Fiber
 bind with fatty acids
 prolong stomach emptying
time so that sugar is
released and absorbed
more slowly
Benefits of Soluble Fiber
 lower total cholesterol and
LDL cholesterol
 regulate blood sugar
Gastro-Fiber and Whole Food
Fiber have a mix of both Insoluble
and soluble fiber!
2 heaping scoops = Serving
Augment smoothies with a ½ serving (1 scoop)
1 Jug of Whey Pro Complete is 25 Servings
Adding 1 jug of Whey Pro would augment SP Complete for
50 shakes
Will help with satiety and building muscle tissue!
Contains colostrum and inulin for GI-based
immune support – this is great for the
patient who has sensitivities and needs gut
lining healing and immune support.


If a protein mix needs flavors, sugars/sweeteners
and colorings to make it palatable is it really made
to Nourish? Is it a whole food?
SP Complete and Whey Pro are both without added
flavors because we want the patient to appreciate
the food they’re consuming.
That is one of the points of the Purification Program, to
help people learn to make, taste and enjoy real whole
food.
Purification is a good time to ensure the patient
is getting high quality Omega fatty acids.
• Decrease inflammation
• Proper hormone production
• Phase III support
• Sweet taste suppression
• Reduction of sweet cravings and
appetite
• Support blood sugar balance
• Improve insulin sensitivity over
time
• Support weight reduction
Great support for the hypoglycemic, pre-diabetic
type patients!
AF Betafood/Betafood


One strategy to help patients go gracefully into the
Purification Program is to have them start one week ahead
with a small bottle of Betafood at 2 per meal. This
improves bile flow, lubricating the bowel and readies the
body for a change in eating habits.
May be helpful to a patient who is already experiencing
fat digestion issues to continue with a low dosage of 1 per
meal through the program.




LivCo – Excellent Herbal Liver support and
protector
LivTon – Herbal support for bile production and
liver support
Zypan – Betaine HCL and pancreatic enzymes
Multizyme – pancreatic enzymes
Enzycore – L-glutamine for gut lining healing and
pancreatic enzymes
Digest – Herbal support for digestion
Dermatrophin PMG – Epithelia support and
healing
Cholacol – for patient who no longer have a gall
bladder


Lymphatic massage
 Can increase lymph flow by
20%
 Increase removal of infectious
debris
Massage to improve bowel
function
 Abdominal massage can help
stimulate peristalsis, decrease
colonic transit time and
increases the frequency of
bowel movements
 Can be taught to patient to
do at home.

Caution!
Prolonged or very deep
tissue work may add to
the toxic load by
inducing mild muscle
trauma.
 While beneficial, it may
be wise to avoid during
the purification
program.

INFRARED SAUNA








BATHING (HYDROTHERAPY)
Will induce sweating – releasing waste material from skin
Increase oxygenation of tissue
Increase circulation
Reduce pain and improve joint mobility
Gently increase pulse

Great way to help deconditioned to prep for exercise.

Relax bronchial tubes – decrease symptoms of asthma and
bronchitis
Great cycle to follow

15 mins in sauna

Cool shower/rinse

Repeat 3-6 times (no more than 2 hours total)

Caution!

Start slow 3-5 mins then add 1-2 per session

Keep temperatures in the 135-170˚ range

Keep hydrated with lots of water!
Traditional Sauna

Great too.

Tends to be on the hotter end of the range

Tends to be hot to start instead of gradually heating up

Better to the already conditioned

Similar benefits (see infrared sauna)





Use bath filter for water (avoid
chlorinated/bromated/floridated
water)
Water temperature is best
between 98-100˚
Soak for 10-15 mins
Shower/rinse with cool water
Can repeat 2-3 times
Caution



Too hot of water can burn the skin
and excite the nervous system
Keep hydrated with lots of water!
Avoid soaps and detergents.
Can add essential oils to sauna or bath. Sea salts and Epsom salts can be added to bath.
Only use 100% essential oils and salts free from additional additives.
Remember these are just here to augment the purification process!

Coherent breathing calms the nervous system, increases focus and reduces
stress. It is basically breathing at a rate of five breaths per minute. A
simple and uncomplicated way of approximating five breaths per minute
is to count to five inhaling and count to five exhaling. Try to breath with
the lips closed, through the nose, directed to the tummy (instead of the
chest). (can start with inhale to 2, exhale to 2 and build up to count of 5).

Wake-up breathing wakes up the mind and body and can also ‘brighten
mood.’ Begin with a long, slow inhale, followed by a quick, powerful
exhale generated from the lower belly. Once comfortable with the
contraction, up the pace to one inhale-exhale (all through the nose) every
one to two seconds, for a total of 10 breaths.
Many breathing styles and techniques are beneficial. The main focus is to get
people to breathe instead of holding their breath. Getting a person to focus
on their breathing will help. Do a breathing exercise for 5mins 2 times per day
for one week is a good start. There are also some focused breathing apps that
may help (BreathtoRelax, Breathzone)
Why do we hold our breath? Fight or flight!


Mild to moderate exercise is encouraged!
Walk, jog, short hike, dance, leisurely bike ride, light
weights, yoga, Pilates, light calisthenics, etc.







Moves lymph
Stimulates release of waste materials from cells
Improves circulation (blood, nutrients)
Improves bowel function
Improves oxygenation of tissues
Helps to maintain appropriate blood sugar levels
It will induce sweating – a natural ‘detox’ action of the body
PLUS







Produces ‘happy’ hormones
Maintains or improves flexibility
Maintains or improves strength
Maintains or improves bone formation
Maintains or improves lung function
Maintains or improves cardiovascular function
And on, and on, and on…
Caution
Intense exercise (sprint,
long runs, heavy
weight training, long
bike ride) is great –
but not during the
purification process.
If the patient must
maintain an intense
exercise program,
alterations will need to
be made to support
the level of activity!

Purification program is a good time to decrease or stop
use of media/technology.




3 weeks of not reading the news
3 weeks of not reading social media
3 weeks of not using E-readers
Not everyone can avoid all media or electronics.

Can they choose one or two to stop for the 21 days?
 A great option is to get them to stop watching TV, E-reader,
Computer/Tablet in bed and/or turn it off 1 hour before bed.
 This will improve their quality of sleep!
 Instead they can use this time to do breathing exercises, read a
paper book, take a slow stroll around the block, take a warm (not
hot) bath or shower, etc.
A great source for materials and information regarding the
Purification Program.
“It is highly dishonorable for a reasonable soul to live
in so divinely built a mansion as the body she resides
in -altogether unacquainted with the exquisite
structure of it.” -Robert Boyle (1627-91)
