Welcome to the Dibleys Houseplant Catalogue
Once again it gives me great pleasure to
bring you our latest catalogue.
We have had another successful year at
the major flower shows; our 23rd
Chelsea Gold Medal with two plants
voted into the top twenty new plants to
be exhibited at the show.
The big event for us this coming year is
to host the Royal Horticultural Society’s
Streptocarpus trial. As well as many of
our own varieties there will be plants
entered by other breeders. All these
plants will be on view in our
streptocarpus glasshouse from July
onwards; a visit to us should be of great
interest to all keen growers.
pots in which to display your plants;
these are ideal containers for specimen
plants and can be left for long periods
between watering.
Our flowering plants by post are proving
very popular, making beautiful gifts or an
instant plant for your own collection. We
only list a small range of potted plants in
the catalogue which are available by
post, but if you want a specific variety
which is not listed please contact us to
see if we have it available.
Have a successful growing season.
When visiting the Nursery why not
extend your visit with a walk around our
lovely 10 acre garden.
There are of course some exciting new
Streptocarpus that we have bred that we
think you will like (page 4), including a
new double blue flowering variety. There
are also some Achimenes (pages 20-23)
that are excellent new additions to our
wide range.
In the sundries section (page 34) you will
find an exciting selection of self-watering

CARE OF STREPTOCARPUS
Knowing their geographical distribution helps in understanding their care, they come
from the wooded areas in mountains, so they do not want full sunshine, but they do
want a bright position. Too much sun burns the leaves and fades the flowers. Keep
them in a shaded greenhouse or indoors in an East or West window.
Overwatering, in particular regular overwatering, will cause harm to the
root system. The first symptom of overwatering is exactly the same as
underwatering i.e., the plant will wilt. So make sure the compost is actually dry
in between watering. Please remember every plant is a separate individual and
should be treated as such.
Carol Klein admiring ‘Sweet Melys’ in front of our Gold Medal display at Chelsea
Flower Show 2012
Streptocarpus need a high potash feed and the most convenient way is to insert a
Dibleys Streptocarpus Fertiliser Tablet each month.
In winter, water less often, do not feed and keep the plants in a place free from frost.
In March or April gradually start watering more often and commence feeding. The
winter flowering Crystal varieties need feed throughout the year. Plants should be
potted into a slightly larger pot each spring.
Do not over-pot; you will get more flower by keeping the plant on the pot
bound side. Using half or three quarter depth pots is a good idea. (see pots
on page 37).
Given this treatment you will be rewarded by a continuous display of flowers from
about May until well into winter. You will also find the flowers are good for cutting.
Full care of Streptocarpus is covered in our book, see page 35.

warm water is not necessary to get the rhizomes
to sprout. They come originally from Central and
South America.
Supplied as rhizomes or plants as available.
RHIZOMATOUS/CORM
GESNERIADS
All the plants in this section grow from small
rhizomes. In the spring plant the rhizomes
about 2 cm below the surface of a good soilfree potting compost. The rhizomes produce
shoots very quickly (2-4 weeks). At the end of
the growing season leave the compost to dry
out. Keep the rhizomes dry and frost free for
the winter before planting again into fresh
compost in the spring.
The xAchimenantha, Kohleria and some
Achimenes grow best with some support.

RHIZOMATOUS/CORM GESNERIADS
All the plants in this section grow from small rhizomes or corms. In the spring plant the rhizomes about 2 cm below the surface, and the corms on the surface of a good soil-free potting compost.

planting again into fresh compost in the spring. Kohlerias grow best with some support.

BEGONIAS
We are again increasing the range of Begonias we list. Begonias require similar conditions to Streptocarpus. It is a genus of several thousand
species and hybrids with a wide range of types and habits. We are not offering the tuberous varieties grown solely for their large flowers, but a
range of beautiful species and hybrids which deserve to be more widely known. Many have showy flowers as well as attractive foliage.
They will withstand a wide range of light levels but avoid excessive sun or shade. The temperature should be kept to a minimum of 10˚C (50˚F) .
The compost should be moist but do not over-water. Feed regularly during the growing season with a well balanced fertiliser. For ease of description
we have divided our range into four groups. Those marked NEW are new introductions into our catalogue.
