But, once again, life intervened in the form of Mikaella and Micah. Of course, Milton and Chavonne needed a family car, so they bought a Dodge SRT Magnum station wagon (see PentaGram Oct. 2012). But all the while, his ‘Cuda project was dormant in the garage and churning in the back of his mind. Finally, in 2005 it Black ... Fish Statistics show that only 20% of the people who take a car apart put that same car back together. Are you one of the 20%? Milton is, and he did it twice. To the same car. Ever since Club member Milton Karahadian can remember, his dad and his two uncles had Mopars, including a few Chrysler lettered 300’s. And with an upbringing like that, well, Milton had no chance to be anything but a Mopar enthusiast himself. During his teenage years in Santa Rosa CA in 1978, Milton owned a ‘70 GTX that he bought for $500. It became the interest of a guy with a ‘70 340 4-speed ‘Cuda. Both cars were rollers with missing engines, drivetrains and otherwise in pieces. The guy had to have the GTX, and Milton decided to trade for the ‘Cuda. After high school, Milton found an engine at a wrecking yard for the E-Body: a running Gen-1 Hemi out of a 55 DeSoto. With help from a pal, Milton figured out how to drop it into the ‘Cuda’s engine bay and make it run at the local strip. Milton also had a motorcycle he had crashed and broke his leg. While limping around with his cast, a guy offered to trade a 440-6 Pack motor and Hemi 4-speed four speed for what was left of the bike. Milton took that as a sign regarding the wisdom of riding a motorcycle and took that trade, too. Milton now owned a proper engine and transmission for his ‘Cuda. But, as often’s the case, his E-body project stalled when life sort of got in the way with college, an extended stay in a foreign land, and the start of his career here in San Diego in 2000. But his desire to complete his ‘Cuda was never dampened, and four years later Milton transported the car from Santa Rosa to his San Diego garage. It was about that time that Milton and his wife, Chavonne, were married. Over the next several years, Milton developed his ideas for what he The only hint that Milton’s ‘70 ‘Cuda is not stock are some minor de-badging, oversize Centerline wheels and low-profile Nitto tires. Also, the Dana 60 rear axle now carries rear disk brakes. Left: leather Legendary interior installed by Armando. Milton departed from stock with white-faced gauges. Right: the 440 is stroked to 512 c.i. and sports Vintage Air and a touch of tasteful aftermarket bling. was time to launch Project Black Fish, so named because that’s the color Milton intended the car to be painted. And Chavonne was right there, diving underneath to grind and chip off the 38-year old undercoating, among other tasks. Milton decided that the 440 needed to be stroked to 512 c.i. and the ‘Cuda needed to have certain components such as a Shaker hood, a Rim-Blow steering wheel, and a Pistol Grip shifter that are iconic to the Mopar E-Body. Except for large Centerline wheels with grippy Nitto tires, Black Fish would appear outwardly stock, including the interior. The engine bay and suspension would be treated to modern appearance and performance upgrades, however. The Black Fish is Milton’s first complete Mopar make-over, and yeah, it took a while. Lots of sleep was lost sweating the details. It probably cost more than he figured, too. Milton acknowledges that he couldn’t have done it without his friends Mike Mattern and Steve Williams and of course, Chavonne, daughter Mikaella and son Micah, on grinders to remove paint and undercoat, and sandpaper & buffers on the new paint. But that’s the way projects of this scale go. On Black Fish, Milton removed every nut and bolt, and replaced them with better bolts and nuts. Now, he says, he’s nuts. And as you can see, the result is worth it.
