For starters, there are still hearings on three pairs who are either suspected of cheating or have confessed to doing so. The hearings, to be conducted by the European Bridge League, are scheduled for April and May. Leading up to those hearings and beyond, Rona will be traveling the world to try to recruit the 124 member countries of the WBF to join the war on unethical behavior at the bridge table. The plans include revealing new methods for safeguarding the game. One of his first trips will be to South America, where he will conduct a seminar on methods now in development to prevent, detect and prove wrongdoing at the bridge table. For example, Rona foresees a time when every playing card will have a chip embedded to allow for a complete record of every play. Every bid and play will be captured on video. The WBF and many national bridge organizations have for years used only “symmetrical” playing cards, designed to look the same no matter how they are positioned. What the WBF and national bridge organizations need the most to combat unethical behavior is evidence, Rona says. Except for health-related equipment and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and turned off. 1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending or receiving electronic signals must not be visible during the session. 1.11.3 This policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders and kibitzers with the exception of those persons designated by the ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play. 1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. Her husband will join her in the Bronze LM ranks. Toby McEvoy struck gold on Sunday. He came to Reno needing 4.69 points and mined 5.37 in the Gold Rush Swiss. West rebid 2NT and West bid 3♣, Alerted by West, who then bid 3NT. When asked the meaning of the Alert, West said it was a natural bid but her partner might have meant something different. The opponent, Fred Weidman of Oakland NJ, said a natural bid didn’t need an Alert. Said West: “Well, I Alerted in case I shouldn’t have.” I strongly recommend getting into the habit of counting your cards after you take them from the board. If you find that you have too many or too few cards, you can take care of the issue efficiently by calling the director. He or she usually will go to the table where the board had just been played and make a search. If the card is found, no problem. If the missing card isn’t found and hand records are in use, the director can determine which card you are missing and get that card from another board or deck. All is well. If you fail to count the cards and later find that one is missing, the director may be able to find it, but you might end up with a penalty. Say the opponents were playing 4♥ and you thought you started with two low clubs. Say declarer plays three rounds of clubs and you ruff. When you notice near the end that you are short What can go wrong? If the director finds your missing card and it’s a club, you have revoked. Because you, not your partner, won the trick on which you revoked, if your side won any subsequent tricks, you owe the opponents two tricks. Even if your side didn’t win the revoke trick or your partner won it instead of you, if your side won any tricks after that, you will forfeit a trick to the opponents. On occasion, you will forfeit even more tricks, but that’s a discussion for another day. Another aspect of duplicate that can seem tricky at first is the use of bidding boxes. I remember when bidding boxes were introduced at the club in Memphis many years ago. Some of the players objected to them, but it wasn’t long before everyone realized how much the devices improved the game. With the bidding cards on the table until the auction is over, there is no need to ask for a review. The game is quieter. No longer do you hear an excited player almost shout a bid of 7NT or make a loud penalty double. Care and attention are needed, however, in the use of the bidding boxes. It is not unusual for a person to intend to take a particular card from the bidding box but accidentally pick a different card. If the bidder notices the mistake before his partner has called, the bid can be changed. This is different from selecting a card, putting it down and then changing your mind. In This contract should be played identically at either form of scoring. The danger is that West has the outstanding three trumps, and after you ruff the ♥K at trick two and lead the ♠K, West will win, get an encouraging diamond discard from East and underlead his likely ♦A to East’s king. Now a third heart from East promotes West’s ♠10 to the setting trick. The answer is to discard the ♦8 at trick two. Now West cannot get East in for a heart play to promote his ♠10. You wind up living happily ever after, losing two hearts and a spade rather than one heart, one diamond and two spades! Tomorrow: More duplicate practices Kailee Betts from Reno was part of a small group from Reno Youth Bridge who came to play on Saturday. Unfortunately, it was a group of five, and the game turned out to be a one-table affair, leaving someone without a seat. Next door, the Gold Rush was getting underway, there was an inconvenient half table and Bruce Thornburgh, in town from Boise ID, still needed a partner. Bruce and Kailee joined forces. They so enjoyed playing the first session that, although they were obligated only for the one session, they returned after the break to play the second set. Two of Kailee’s RYB friends were so inspired by Kailee that, instead of leaving after the first session, they made it two, too. I met people from all the parts of the United States and also from many other parts of the world. I made connections. This is amazing.” Yes, it is. Anyone who wishes to report such activity can visit the home page (www.worldbridge.org) and click on the link to the High-Level Players Commission. Rona pledges that all reports will be investigated and taken seriously, especially those that are accompanied by evidence. “If you think someone is cheating, Rona says, “it is your duty to provide information, not rumors.” One of Rona’s goals as WBF chief is to work toward enhancing technological resources to make the game more secure. At the world championships in Chennai, India, last fall, 12 of the tables in the main teams event were surrounded by cameras recording every bid and play. In this year’s big tournament – the World Bridge Games in Wroclaw, Poland – 24 tables will be monitored. “Step by step,” Rona says, “we will arrive at more technology. We are the coordinators.” The WBF is committed to cleaning up the game, but Rona views the landscape realistically. “We can’t believe we are living in paradise. Humans are corruptible and it is dreaming to believe that at a certain moment all cheaters will disappear.” That’s not to say that those who are caught breaking the rules will not be dealt with harshly, Rona says, but prosecutions must be based on evidence. While he is dealing with the cheating issue, Rona is also focusing on the 2016 World Youth Teams Championships in Salsomaggiore, Italy, scheduled for Aug. 3 to 13. Rona believes a record turnout is possible this year. For information about that tournament, visit the WBF website. Once that competition is completed, the World Bridge Games in Wroclaw will be the WBF president’s focus. The tournament was once known as the World Bridge Olympiad. Each member country of the WBF can send four teams, one each to play in the Open, Women’s, Seniors and Mixed Teams (a new event). The tournament also features National Pairs Championships: Open, Women’s, Seniors and Mixed. Note: there are no transnational events in Wroclaw. All pairs and teams must be made up of players from the same country. Wroclaw, the largest city in western Poland, is easy to reach for most travelers from North America, says Rona. For 2016, the city has been designated by the European Union as the European Capital of Culture. During the year, the city organizes a series of cultural events with a strong European dimension. “There will be a lot of activities in Wroclaw,” says Rona. Please be scent-sitive! Some people have an extreme sensitivity to fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances. Because duplicate bridge requires players to be in close proximity to each other, individuals who suffer from fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem. The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue the consideration it deserves. Please, if you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions. Monday, March 14, 2016 Daily Bulletin Vanderbilt Kn The premier event of the Spring North American Championships is the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams. The history of the prestigious contest stretches back to 1928 when the man who invented contract bridge, Harold S. Vanderbilt, put the trophy bearing his name into play. The winners list is a who’s who of bridge, a parade of the titans of the game. As part of the ACBL’s ongoing archiving project, photos of some of the winners are included with this history. The Vanderbilt Trophy The Vanderbilt Trophy for the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams was donated in 1928 by Harold S. Vanderbilt, who won the event in 1932 and 1940. The Vanderbilt was contested annually in New York – as a separate championship – until 1958 when it became part of the Spring North American Championships. Vanderbilt winners receive replicas of the trophy – a practice initiated by Vanderbilt from the first running of the event and perpetuated by a $100,000 trust fund administered by ACBL under the terms of Vanderbilt’s will. On display at ACBL Headquarters in Horn Lake MS are the Vanderbilt Trophy, as well as replicas donated by the families of Caroline Taylor, who won the Vanderbilt in 1928, and Helen Sobel Smith, a Vanderbilt winner in 1944 and 1945. If, as happens, your ♦Q wins and a diamond to the 10 loses to the king, a heart will come back. Do you finesse or go up with the ace? Your guess is as good as mine. If you rise with the ace you are relying on diamonds to break – there is no clubheart squeeze if they don’t. If diamonds behave, you are home if clubs break or, as in this case, the squeeze works. Also note that if East had ♦K J 8 x and no ♥K in a 2=4=4=3 pattern, he should rise with the ♦K at trick two and shift to a heart. If he doesn’t, declarer might conceivably come home with the aid of some good card reading. So maybe diamonds are a favorite to break? P.S. Our expert declarer won the ♠Q at trick one to lead a diamond to the 10, preferring a 50% line to the 75% line. Sigh. Their 58.73% game in the second final session was enough to keep them in first. The win was the 14th NABC+ win for Greco. Hampson has 19. They have won 13 NABC+ events as partners. The two have also won a world championship together – the 2010 Rosenblum Cup in Philadelphia. Hampson was a member of the winning squad in the 2001 World Transnational Open Teams in Paris. The winners did have a scare in the Platinum Pairs. Unless otherwise noted: The three-flight events (two-session) are divided: A/X (Unlimited/5000) separate from B/C (2500/1500) and the Gold Rush (750/300). Two-flight events are divided A/X/Y (Unlimited/5000/3000), B/C/D (2500/1500/500) if no Gold Rush; A/B/C (Unlimited/2500/1500), Gold Rush 750/500/200. Stratified events: A (Unlimited), B (750–2500) and C (0–750). In B flights, no single player may be over 2500. In Gold Rush events, no single player may be over 750. 299er and lower events are stratified at the discretion of the director. BOL , UPPER CASE = NABC+ events. UPPER CASE = NABC events. *Members whose dues payment is current and Life Masters whose service fee payment is current. International Fund In NABC+ events, $1.50 (per person, per session) of each entry fee will be allocated to the ACBL International Fund. These funds are used to underwrite part of the expenses of ACBL players who participate in international competition.
