Alash are masters of Tuvan throat singing, a
remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches
at the same time. What distinguishes this gifted
quartet from earlier generations of Tuvan throat
singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences
into their traditional music. One can find complex
harmonies, western instruments and contemporary
song forms in Alash’s music, but its overall sound
and spirit is decidedly Tuvan. The tiny republic
of Tuva sits at the southern edge of Siberia with
Mongolia to its south and has been part of the

cultural ties with Mongolia. Passed down through

In the last few years, guitarist Martin Simpson has been
busier, more successful and more visible than ever before
in his long career. His 2007 release Prodigal Son was
nominated for 5 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, winning Album
of the Year. 2009 saw the release of a new CD, True Stories,

written and at times most unusual in form, telling true
stories and dealing with themes of love, loss, home and
much more.
Soul deep Brit James Hunter joins us with songs from latest

put him on the map and turned him into a major breakout
success of that year, receiving huge critical acclaim and
opening for Etta James, Boz Scaggs and Aretha Franklin.
British jazz trombonist Chris Barber celebrated his 61st
year as a bandleader in 2010. Chris formed his first Barber
New Orleans Band in 1949 at the age of nineteen. Over
the years, Chris Barber’s Jazz Band evolved into the Chris
Barber Jazz and Blues Band, a richly-textured eight-piece
group, blending brass, reeds, and electric guitar into a
unique and unmistakable mix of blues and jazz. Having

Highly successful songwriter and instigator of The Beautiful

album in July 2010. Entitled The Life Of Birds, the album
is a modern folk concept album, featuring collaborations

Whitby, where Rotheray’s country instincts blend naturally
with the folkier leanings of his collaborators.

Rachel Harrington is a roots musician whose unique
artistry captures the deep link between country and soul.
From the crossroads of gospel, folk and bluegrass, her
songs tell personal and mythical stories from the American

album Celilo Falls with tales of bar-room brawls, starlit
weepers, the longings of lost love and family sorrow.
Classical strings meet some boho gypsy jazz, an acoustic

English. After her last two sell-out performance here at

One of few jazz groups to bridge the gap between crossover
appeal and serious jazz credentials, saxophonist Adam
Waldmann’s Kairos Quartet brings a modern twist to the
classic quartet format. Blurring the boundaries between
accessible, tune-led music with heavy grooves and
improvising of the highest order, this is a band whose time
has come. Their debut album Kairos Moment sparkled with
melodic gems, focusing on tight group interplay and strong
compositions, tempered with deep respect for the folk,
world music and funk traditions.
Storm Warning blend contemporary blues, rock and jazz
to create their trademark slick and classy sound. They
write superb original songs and play interesting covers
featuring the amazing guitar work of Bob Moore. Although
Storm Warning have their own distinctive sound they are
