HOSPITALS DUBLIN MATER MISERICORDIAE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL Eccles Street, Dublin 7. 01 8032000 01 8032404 www.mater.ie The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is the main charitable voluntary general hospital serving Dublin’s north inner city. It is a university teaching hospital providing acute and tertiary specialist services. The population of its local catchment area is approximately 185,000. The hospital was established in 1861 under the auspices of Sr. Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy. At full capacity it has approximately 600 beds (at full capacity) including day beds. Annually approximately 18,000 patients are admitted, including 12,000 emergencies, approximately 49,000 patients attend for day cases and 50,000 attend the Emergency Department. Outpatient attendances exceed 215,000 It is the National Centre for: Cardiac Surgery, Heart And Lung Transplantation, Spinal Injuries Centre, Pulmonary Hypertension, Extra Corporeal Life Support, National Isolation Unit and Bone Anchored Hearing Aid, The Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) service. Other specialties include but are not limited to cardiology, ophthalmology, haematology / oncology, nephrology, urology, infectious diseases, psychiatry, ear nose and throat, rheumatology, diabetes and endocrinology, neurology and stroke care, a multidisciplinary breast care centre, respiratory medicine, vascular surgery, interventional radiology, emergency and intensive care medicine, plastic surgery, general and colo-rectal surgery, orthopaedics, medicine for the elderly, pain and palliative care medicine. In 2012 the new state-of-the-art Whitty Building opened in phases. The first phase saw the opening of a new Outpatients Department, Catering Department and Gastrointestinal Outpatients. The first ward in the hospital with 100% single room provision, titled St. Vincent's Haematology / Oncology ward, on level 7, opened at the end of November 2012. A 444-space basement car park opened in January 2013, followed swiftly by the relocation of our Emergency Department. On February 17th 2013, the Radiology Department relocated. Twelve new Operating Theatres, an Intensive Care Unit and eighty single en suite rooms will open shortly. This exciting development provides for modern buildings and equipment for existing services at the Mater and will provide significant additional capacity to service growing patient needs. St. Paul’s Hospital, Beaumont, established in 1970 in association with the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, serves families in North Dublin and county with children with autism. This well established, exciting and expanding specialist service reaches out to families from its main campus in Beaumont and through Community Houses. In addition to medical and nursing training and its link with the post graduate colleges and faculties it has significant teaching and research commitments in association with the largest university in Ireland, University College Dublin. The teaching and research commitments range from diagnostic radiology, oncology, cardiology and other clinical specialties to healthcare informatics.
