I can tell you now that the three pending High Court suits against the Club have been amicably settled – without huge financial losses or adverse publicity to any party. We have seen and learned how partisan policies lead to dissent and division. It is now time to move on and expend our energies on more meaningful responsibilities. A new horizon is looming on the swimming front with the arrival of our new Swim Director, Barry Prime who has been tasked with invigorating the somewhat stale air in our swimming section. A former Olympian, Barry comes with impeccable qualifications, and the distinction of having groomed several Olympic and world swimming champions. We are privileged to have Barry on our side in the next four years leading up to the London Olympics. He just might help our swim mothers realise their dream of sending their children to the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympics – maybe even the 2012 London Olympics! I would also like to introduce to you our new Senior (HR) Manager, Christopher Lim, and our new Chief Security Manager, Cyril Sta Maria. I take this opportunity to welcome them onboard and wish them a pleasant and meaningful tenure with the Club. The changing demographics of our Club membership has rendered imperative the need to beef up our sporting and social activities and expand our F&B services. At the dialogue session held recently, I had the opportunity to present an upgrading conceptual plan to gauge Members’ response. The initial reaction from the Members present were mostly positive. The final upgrading plan for the Club will be presented to Members when design and cost submissions are ready. Finally, let me say that capital expenditure should rightly come from the Development Fund, which in the past had been expanded to cover the operating deficit. It is in the interest of every Member that the Club’s operating expenses should not tax the development fund. The first 100-day Finance Report Card shows a trend of reduced operating deficit against the budgeted operating deficit. However, this deficit figure could easily escalate if subsidies are not contained and gradually reduced for all services and activities of the Club. Revenue on the other hand should increase with moderate adjustments to food and beverage prices and higher earnings from Banquet sales. This is going to be a year of Change. The effects of the changes will be evident only in the third and fourth quarter of this financial year. Nonetheless, our efforts must be consistently applied throughout the year if we are to bring about the desired results. Special Projects Manager KATHLEEN CHIA kathleenc@sswimclub.org.sg Swim Director BARRY PRIME barryp@sswimclub.org.sg Freddie Koh President OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 01 02 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 Management Committee President’s address at the Thank You & Welcome Dinner “Office bearers have the obligation to run a good race – and ensure a smooth changeover when the time comes.” Every established institution will have traditions of its own which have been developed over many years. One cherished tradition of the Singapore Swimming Club is the Thank You & Welcome Dinner, held every year to express our appreciation to members who have served in the outgoing Committees, and at the same time to welcome those serving in the newly formed Committees. This is likened to the passing of the Baton in a relay race. One member of the team passes on the Baton to the next as smoothly as he can. The goal is for the team to cross the finishing line ahead of its competitors. A relay team may not have all four fastest runners, but the timely passing of the Baton without hitches can make the difference whether the team wins a medal or not. We are all in this relay race; every year one set of members will be passing the baton to the next set. As office bearers we have the obligation not only to run our leg of the race to the best of our ability, but also to ensure a smooth changeover when the time comes. A poor changeover means the next runner has to put in extra effort to make up for the lost distance. A good team is not one made up of all star runners, but one that works harmoniously together. A team torn apart by discord and disunity will only produce disappointing results. The last thing a coach would expect is for a team member to drop the Baton on purpose simply because he has had a poor first leg. Members of the various Committees, I urge you in the coming year to keep in mind that the Club needs you to run your leg in this relay as best you can, then pass on the baton graciously and efficiently. Remember the honours come after – and not before or during – the race. The absence of all the 7 outgoing MC members at tonight’s function is unfortunate. I leave it to you to make your own judgment and draw your own conclusions. Over the years, we have developed our own set of core values anchored on our branding as a Family Club. We want to create an atmosphere where members can come together to relax and participate in various sporting and social activities. Harmony, Unity, openness and sociability are some of the core values we want to embrace in our Club. As Committee members entrusted to fulfill the responsibilities given to us, let us do our job without fear or favour, with the sole objective to make ours a Premier Club. We may not reach the pinnacle of success during our tenure, but when the time comes for us to pass on the baton, we want to look back and say we did our best, and we ran a good leg. This evening belongs to you - enjoy the dinner! Ordinary members, like coaches, are tasked with the responsibility of selecting the best team for the competition. 30 August Members Dialogue Session About 85 Members attended the session held at the Ballroom on 30 August, 2008 at 4 pm. The purpose of the Dialogue was to dispense the latest Club information and obtain feedback from Members. President, Freddie Koh took the opportunity to introduce to members present, three new key staff who had just joined the management team – Christopher Lim, Senior Manager (HR), Barry Prime, Swim Director and Cyril Santa Maria, Chief Security Manager. President also gave brief updates of the three High Court Cases, the Club’s current Financial position, the F&B By Kathleen Chia operating deficit and the Club’s Vision for the future development of the Club. After the President’s presentation, Members participated in the Q&A session. Several members complimented the President and the Management Committee for the initiative taken in cost control measures and F & B pricing policy. They also wished to see the Club’s future development plan take into account potential revenue from rentals of retail space. The Club should provide space for public access but segregated from the Club grounds. The session ended at 6.15pm. Safety Hump The open space in front of the car-park entrance sees heavy criss-crossing of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. We have constructed a road hump to deter cars from speeding. We urge both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution while coursing through this area. OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 07 Management Committee Thank you & Welcome Dinner – 1 August Let’s work together By Kajal Parikh The dinner saw members of the outgoing committees and those in the newly set committees coming together for a night of mingling. the same time urged the new office bearers to work to bring the club to a higher level. This was followed by a slide presentation showing the outgoing and incoming committee members. In the President’s speech, Mr. Freddie Koh thanked outgoing committee members for their service rendered during the past year, and at Elizabeth Ang, our new solo keyboardist entertained for the night as members mingled around the buffet dinner. 08 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 – 9 August Carnival y a D l na Natio l By Kaja Parikh The red faces seen all over the Club were not those of people blushing. They were our national colours the kids and their parents painted on themselves with pride. It was the Club’s National Day Carnival. Over at the cabanas, both children and adults were kept entertained with telematches, little performances and a slew of entertainment items. The belly dancing and drumming act was such a hit! The Atrium was the other magnet drawing the crowds with its colourful bazaar stalls. The 3 piece strolling band and a juggler added to the celebratory fervour. As things simmered down at sunset, members sat back to relax in front of the big screen to enjoy the telecast of the National Day Parade beamed live from Marina Bay! What a way to enjoy our Nation’s Birthday. OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 09 News Bytes SOCIAL Singapore Flyer and Captain Explorer Adventure Tour – 23 August Hitting a new high! by Mohd Nazri The rains could not dampen the spirits of the 40 members who set out on this adventure tour. The first part of the outing was the “Duck Tour”. The half hour ride on land and another half hour on water allowed us to take in attractions like the Esplanade, City Hall, Boat Quay, Victoria Theater, the old Parliament House and the Singapore Recreation Club. We even crossed the Benjamin Shears Bridge and passed the Merlion at One Fullerton. Of course not to be missed, the Singapore Flyer – the biggest Ferris wheel in Asia. From the top we had a bird’s eye view of the city & CBD area, and also Kallang Stadium & the Marina Bay Golf Course. After that we stopped over at Lau Pa Sat for dinner before proceeding back to the club. Elvis Night – 20 August Elvis is Alive! By Mohd Nazri The king was in the Club. That was reason enough to pretty up D’Tanjong. Only one piece of practical arrangement was allowed for - the lounge furniture had to make way for the long tables with upright chairs, for dinner. Dinner was either the Beef Wagon Set or Roasted Pork Set which was pre-ordered. By 6pm, members had started to 10 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 stream in for dinner, and the bandhit the first notes at 9pm. That was all the prompting members needed to invade the dance floor. Then as everyone was on a high, “Elvis” made his grand entrance to wolf-whistles. He was resplendent in his gleaming white suit as he performed many of his classic hits. After performing, everyone was back on the dance floor all the way till midnight. SOCIAL News Bytes 13 September The Lantern Fest! By Kajal Parikh Long before the event started at 7pm, there was already a long queue of kids and their parents claiming the goodie bags. These were given to the first 80 kids! Others were sampling mooncakes, pomelo and Chinese tea! Throughout the event, families gathered to take part in the games and activities taking place at various corners. Everyone was delighted to see Chang-Er, the fairy legend to give away prizes to the participants. Then as the skies dimmed, the kids brought out their colourful lanterns for a precession around the pool. Oh what a sight they made! OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 11 News Bytes SOCIAL Soap-making Workshop – 26 July Some clean fun By Kajal Parikh The Open Terrace was all abuzz that Saturday afternoon, with kids and their parents. But there was nothing to worry about. They were just having some clean fun – making aromatic soaps. With the help of instructors, the 14 kids made their soaps in all kinds of shapes and sizes. There were stars and Kids Day Out – 30 August A morning at the Gallop Stables By Kajal Parikh The kids could hardly contain their excitement while waiting for the bus at the Club lobby. Most had their parents with them; a few even had their grandparents tagging along. The bus arrived on cue at half past nine, and they were off to Gallop Stable in Pasir Ris. There, the kids had a great time taking pony rides and feeding the miniature horses. How time flies when you’re having fun! Before they knew it, it was time to take the return trip to the Club, where lunch was waiting for them. 12 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 crescents. The more adventurous made theirs in the shape of mini milk bottles, even jig-saw puzzles. The kids had fun choosing the colours and fragrances to use. Some took pains to choose matching colours; others threw in all the colours of the rainbow. News Bytes SWIMMING 21 - 23 August 109th Swimming Open Championship By Sonia Kaur About 90 of our swimmers took part in the championship, with some non-swimming Members joining in the fun. The highlight of the event was the special freestyle relay with eight teams, each led by MC members, President Freddie Koh, Vice-President Michael Ngu, Shaul Hassan, William Kwok and Gary Oon, and three other members, Ng Chee Soon, Raymond Lim and Tay Teng Hong. Freddie Koh’s team took the first spot, followed by Shaul Hassan’s and Raymond Lim’s team in that order. OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 13 News Bytes SWIMMING 3rd ASEAN Invitational Midget Meet 2008 – 6 - 7 September Missed by a hair’s breadth! By Sonia Kaur This third meet in the Asean Midget series took off on with much pomp. 390 young swimmers from Singapore and the Asean region came down for the inaugural meet 2006; in 2007 the figure dipped to 338. This time round we had a bumper 421 young swimmers from Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam competing for honours in the pool. Unfortunately the swimmers from the other countries that came down last year were not able to make it this year. It was a proud moment for the swimmers as they marched past the crowds cheering from the galleries. Among the crowd seated at the grand stand were guest-of-honor Jeffery Leow, President of Singapore Swimming Association; SSC President Freddie Koh and Organizing Committee Chairman, Loreen Teo. The first event of the meet kicked off at 9.30am signaling the start of intense rivalry among the competing teams. At the end of the first day of competition, ACE Swim Club was in the lead with 204 Points. Following closely was SSC with 191 and Chinese Swimming Club lagging further with 133. If the rivalry on the first day of competition was hot, the second day featuring all relays, was scorching. As the day progressed the weaker teams fell by the wayside, and it became apparent that we were seeing a two-horse race to the finish between SSC and ACE Swim Club. SSC inched closer to the leader, and at the end of the day we missed the Championship title by just one point. In the Individual events, SSC did well to pick up 4 Gold, 5 Silver and 4 Bronze medals. The toast of SSC must be Tatsuya Okamoto, 7, took home 2 Gold medals. In the Relay events, we claimed 3 Golds, courtesy of our 120m Medley Relay, Girls 5 & Under, Freestyle Relay Boys 5 & under and Girls 5 yrs and under freestyle relay. In addition to that we also won 5 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. The farewell lunch included a showtime segment during which PCA Stingray and San Pablo Mantas Swimming Team put up dance performances. We also had a magic show. Tokens of Appreciation were given to the team managers of all the Clubs that took part. Then came the crowning moment for ACE Swim Club as they received the Champions Trophy. 14 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 News Bytes SWIMMING BEST PERFORMERS: 5 Yrs & Under Boys Nguyen Bao Khuong – Kydong Swimming Club – 2 Golds and 1 record Girls Erika Nicole Burgos – BETTA Splendens Swimming Club – 2 Golds 6yrs Old Boys Nguyen Gia Minh – Kydong Swimming Club – 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 record Girls Chan Zi Yi – Swimfast Aquatic Club – 2 Gold and 2 records 7yrs old Boys Okamoto Tatsuya – Singapore Swimming Club – 2 Golds Girls Mah Starry – Swimfast Aquatic Club – 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 record 8 yrs old Boys Koo Long Hai Dylan – Chinese Swimming Club – 2 Golds MEDALS TALLY Champions : ACE Swim Club Runner-up : Singapore Swimming Club 3rd Position : Chinese Swimming Club 4th Position : Swimfast Aquatic Club 5th Position : Singapore Island Country Club 6th Position : The Grassroots Aquatic Club 7th Position : Aquatic Masters Swim Club 8th Position : Singapore Orchid Country Club 9th Position : Kydong Swimming Club 10th Position : Nguyen Binh Khiem Swim Club – 396 pts – 395 pts – 295 pts – 275.50 pts – 261.50 pts – 138 pts – 125 pts – 109 pts – 106 pts – 84 pts Girls Hoong En Qi – Swimfast Aquatic Club – 2 Golds OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 15 News Bytes SWIMMING 58th Midget Meet – 10 August Outstanding Midgets Several awards were presented to outstanding swimmers during the prize presentation ceremony. News Bytes BADMINTON Annual Badminton Open Championship – 12 - 26 August Close fights in Badminton Finals The thrills and spills were there even if only four age categories got off the ground. The Ladies Singles, Men Singles Open/Veteran, Ladies Doubles were scrapped due to poor response. In the Men’s Doubles Open Category Finals, Yeo Ah Seng / Chong Soon Onn were up against Victor Sim / Susanto Halim. Their supporters who came to watch this match were not disappointed. Yeo & Chong took the first set 2118. In the tit-for-tat, Sim & Susanto took the next set at 21-19. In the rubber, Sim & Susanto took an early 8-point lead, but it was Yeo & Chong who found their fifth gear to close the gap and win the set and match at 21-17. The Men’s Veterans 40-years Finals pitted Gary Oon / Om Prakash against Eugene Ang / Tan Chee Khiam. Though Ang & Tan lost their first set they more than made up for it by winning the match 16-21/21-17/21-17. The Men’s Veterans 50 years Finals was a grudge match between Jeffrey Heng / Patrick Tan and Francis Lim / Chris Lee. Lim & Lee had lost to Heng & Tan in the preliminaries and were determined not to let history repeat itself. Lim & Lee did, indeed, win the match 21-19/21-10. The Mixed Doubles event looked like a family outing. It was played in the league format, with three pairs ending up with the same aggregate of 6 points each. Following a countback however, the father-daughter team of Lee Ah Ngo & Jamie Lee took the top position followed by the husband wife team of Victor Sim & Natalie Sim. Vincent Especkerman interviews the three new key personnel who recently joined the Club. Christopher Lim SENIOR MANAGER, HUMAN RESOURCE After returning from New Zealand with an Honours degree in Clinical Psychology and a Professional Diploma in Management, Christopher started his career at the Currency Board, heading the Human Resource Department. He later worked at various MNCs and local conglomerates, including a decade at Suntec City where, as a pioneer, he helped set up the organization from scratch - from the piling stage to the vibrant “mini-city” we now see. Before joining SSC, he was a full-time HR consultant at NKF. Christopher has over 30 years of HR and general admin experience and over the years, has gained something of a reputation as a fire-fighter. So how does he feel about that? “I have no complaints since I enjoy doing such work” he said. Cyril Sta Maria CHIEF SECURITY MANAGER Cyril worked in the Singapore Police Force for 26 years and retired in 1991 with the rank of Senior Police Inspector. During his tenure in the Force, he worked in various departments including Operational, Training and Crime Investigations. He even had a stint in Security Branch during which he escorted the former Prime Minister Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. Cyril was conferred The Efficiency Medal in 1985 by the late President Wee Kim Wee. After retiring from the Police Force he worked for the Furama Group and Accor Hotel Group for 17 years as Security Manager. “Security plays an important part in today’s world especially after 9/11 and other recent incidents” said Cyril. “We must never take things for granted and become complacent. We have to be vigilant at all times and try to anticipate what lies ahead of us,” he added. Cyril’s experience in the Police Force and the Commercial Sector will certainly come in handy as he takes on the responsibility of security in the Club. INTERVIEW WITH BARRY PRIME Barry Prime SWIM DIRECTOR SPLASH: How are you settling in at SSC? BARRY: Considering I have just moved from my home in Australia and left some of my very best friends behind, I think I am settling into Singapore in a gentle and positive way. So far, everyone has been very welcoming indeed, and I sincerely hope this will continue. I am still soaking in the culture and gleaning as much information as I can to understand the protocols and values that Singapore Swimming Club stands for. Seeing so many young and eager faces in the Club I am genuinely excited about the prospect of having a role to play in developing their swimming and personal potentials. SPLASH: Where has your coaching career taken you? BARRY: My career has allowed me to work with some of the very best athletes, coaches, sports scientists and sports administrators in the world. 24 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 Interview INTERVIEW WITH BARRY PRIME I have been very fortunate to work with some of the best programmes in Great Britain and Australia including the Australian Institute of Sport. I understand the sport of swimming in these two countries very well indeed from development to elite, including fitness and health. Swimming has also allowed me to travel the world these past 40 years to international swimming competitions, training camps and coaching conferences to gain the experience necessary to develop swimming programmes and athletes to their true potential all the way to international success. Only recently I had the opportunity to visit North Korea to share with their leading sports coaches some of my ideas and philosophies on sports, and swimming in particular. There I gained first-hand experienced of its culture and people. SPLASH: What’s your job scope like at the Club? BARRY: I have been tasked with working with the Swimming Sub-Committee of SSC to develop the Club’s swimming programme of training and education to enable our swimmers to achieve their full potential. This, however, is possible only with the total support of the Club’s Management Committee, the Swimming Sub-Committee, a highly motivated swimming staff, parents and the swimmers themselves. My philosophy is for each swimmer to enjoy the sport for what it is. Each individual swimmer should be given the opportunity at a young age to develop his all-round swimming skills and technique on all strokes as a base for his long-term development. De-emphasising on specialisation at the early stage of their development and emphasizing individual medley instead will make the programme more interesting for them and make them more versatile as competitive swimmers. The most versatile swimmer in the world today is, of course, Michael Phelps. I would like the athletes to set their own goals with the guidance of their coaches, who will follow through with the necessary training and education to help them achieve their desired goals. There will also be team goals set by the coaches. These team goals will be realistic and set within each athlete’s capability. Once done, each swimmer is expected to play his part in helping to achieve the team goal. And we want to achieve all this in a happy and enjoyable environment where young people are required to exercise discipline, and at the same time be allowed to express their creativity and talents in the pool. SPLASH: I suppose you have it all planned …? BARRY: My style is not to come in and change everything overnight. Over time, however, you will see subtle changes being introduced to the swimming programme for the benefit of our swimming community. SPLASH: You’ve coached extensively in Australia and Britain. How different is the coaching culture in Asia compared to western countries? BARRY: The main difference I have observed to date is that Great Britain and Australia take a long term view in the development of each individual athlete taking into account the individual’s education requirements. In Asia – generally - young people are pushed and pressured from a very young age and trained like senior athletes rather than young developing athletes. This is not so much a criticism as an observation in the difference in culture. Of course the former model has evolved over many years as these two countries began to realise the importance of sport to their culture and the benefit it has for the health, fitness and well being of its people. You can have all the money in the world, but there are not many things that can bring a nation together the way sporting success can. The feel good factor when the nation wins on the international stage is something money cannot buy. SPLASH: What’s the draw for you in choosing to work in Singapore? BARRY: This is my first coaching job in Asia although I have been to Hong Kong and Beijing for competitions with Australian Swimming Teams for the World Short Course Championships and World Cup events. The new environment challenges me to bring out the very best of my creative ability as a coach and leader, plus it gives me the opportunity to experience how the different cultural groups live so harmoniously together in this country. What needs developing is the psychology and self-belief that with proper balance and planning, it is possible for it to be successful in sport as much as in education and business. SPLASH: What are your immediate and long-term plans for the Club? BARRY: My immediate aim is to meet and greet as many members as possible whilst also trying to understand the culture and psychology of the swimmers, coaches, parents and Singaporeans in general. I will need some time to understand the internal workings of the Club and the Swimming Department and the swimming programme currently in use. Only after I fully understand the workings of the current programme will I venture to make recommendations for change. My long-term plan is to design a programme that develops the potential of our swimmers covering all levels from learn to swim, junior development, youth development, elite development and health and fitness in general. This Club has the facilities needed to groom swimmers to international levels. But success will come only through ongoing education for swimmers, parents and coaches and when we all learn to pull together as a team. This will be easier as the new programme kicks in and gains momentum in the Club. Athlete development pathways need to be designed to allow each individual to achieve his aims at various points in the continuum of his sporting career. I would also like to develop a culture of swimming for the love of being in the water and for general fitness where success is not measured by the number of medals won. SPLASH: What’s the next big goal in your coaching career? BARRY: I would like to be the catalyst for Singapore swimmers to win medals at major international swimming competitions. To achieve this aim, though, we will need a major shift in thinking and a finer balance between sport and education; otherwise it will be possible only at the junior level as is the case at the present time. This country is capable of great things in sport once it puts its mind to it, just as it has done so in business. I’m counting on that! Singapore has great talent, discipline and good work ethics which are conducive to success in sports.
