Since 1990, the Performing Arts Series at Johnson County Community
College, or PAS, has presented an incredible array of concerts, shows and
events, right here in the heart of Johnson County, Kansas. From Broadway
to classical, there’s something for everyone! During our fantastic 25th
Anniversary year, we experienced the highest annual ticket sales achieved
to date! With new friends and returning patrons, we move ahead, as
wonderful news and celebrations continue.
This summer, we’ll renovate the performance halls. Yardley Hall and
Polsky Theatre, lobby, dressing rooms and Green Room will get new
carpet, paint and recovered seats. While this happens, make a gift to
the “Take A Seat” campaign! For a contribution of $650, you’ll receive
a personalized nameplate on the back of a theatre seat in Yardley Hall.
As always, the college supports our infrastructure, and we are asked to
raise funds and sell tickets to support programming, so money raised will
support future artist visits, right here in Johnson County! Help us reach
our goal of 1,000 named seats! More information on page 25.

Friends Package: $19-$28
Package: $20-$29
Individual: $23-$33
Named one of the top 10 performances in 2014 by The New York Times,
BASETRACK LIVE traces the lives of real-life characters of AJ and Melissa Czubai,
a young Marine and his wife. Follow their journey through his deployment to
Afghanistan and back home again, the birth of their child while he is overseas
and his injury that sends him home. This extraordinary work of documentary
theater is an ambitious collaboration between award-winning theatre company
En Garde Arts and corpsmen from the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines. BASETRACK
LIVE powerfully portrays the impact of war on veterans, and their families and
does not represent these characters as either heroes or victims — instead,
it shows a complicated and sensitive portrayal of how war affects us all.
A partnership with JCCC Veteran & Military Student Resource Center
“Brings the gritty, brutal truths alive
in ways that nothing I’ve read or
seen has succeeded in doing.”

WICHITA GRAND OPERA
LA BOHÈME
by Giacomo Puccini
An Opera in Four Acts
Sung in Italian with English supertitles
8 P.M. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15
Friends Package: $38-$46
Package: $40-$49
Individual: $45-$55
Hey, the opera that inspired the musical “Rent” has to be on your bucket list, right?
It is 1830 in Paris and the rent is due, but the money is not there. Puccini’s
unforgettable tale of love, youth and tragic loss returns in a classic production of
La Bohème, starring legendary baritone and Kansas-born Samuel Ramey. Young
Parisian lovers (Zvetelina Vassileva and Alexey Sayapin) appear in the bohemian
setting that brings the Latin Quarter to life and twists a tale of love that sparkles
with merriment and ends wracked with despair. Puccini’s magical music will
fascinate and move.

AN EVENING WITH GARRISON KEILLOR
8 P.M. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21
Friends Package: $40-$74
Package: $43-$79
Individual: $48-$88
America’s favorite author, storyteller, humorist and radio personality,
Garrison Keillor will retire from his iconic radio show, A Prairie Home
Companion in July, and he’ll hit the road, visiting venues all over
the country. Even when he talks about growing old, it seems Keillor
never grew up. Come hear him wax nostalgic about his home in
Lake Wobegon, Minnesota, and “late-life fatherhood.” With a
wonderful, dry sense of humor (and sometimes with music),
Keillor captivates audiences using his unique blend of comedy,
class, charisma and wisdom.
“He’s a big, tall guy and somehow
the persona of rumpled writer and
English major comes through even
in dark suit, brightened by a red tie,
red socks and red shoes — a hint of
unconventionality that winks at the
audience.”

Friends Package: $21
Package: $22
Individual: $25
We welcome Kansas City-based ensemble Bach Aria Soloists for a very special
program, created especially for the JCCC Performing Arts Series.
L’Histoire du soldat or The Soldier’s Tale is a theatrical work performed by two actors
and a dancer accompanied by a septet of instruments. The piece was conceived by Igor Stravinsky and Swiss writer C. F. Ramuz based on a Russian folk tale,
The Runaway Soldier and the Devil. During World War I, a young soldier trades his
violin to the devil in exchange for great wealth. Full of the wit and humor of Stravinsky,
rhythms are always shifting, the music incorporates elements of jazz, Viennese waltz
and ragtime. The violin is guttural and raw, the clarinet seems to have a will of its own
and the piano acts as a rhythm section, full of barroom “honky tonk.”
Bach Aria Soloists is the adventurous chamber music ensemble dedicated to presenting
the genius and relevance of Johann Sebastian Bach, his contemporaries and those he
inspired through performances, collaborations and BachReach education.

Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville transports audiences to the
exciting streets of 1920’s Paris and Le Jazz Hot. This much beloved
animated film is screened as composer Benoit Charest leads the
orchestra in a live performance of his original score for the film,
including his Academy Award-nominated best song.
Kidnapped by mysterious, square-shouldered henchmen, a Tour de
France cyclist named Champion is spirited across the ocean to the
teeming metropolis of Belleville. His near-sighted grandmother and
faithful dog follow his trail and are taken in by a trio of eccentric
jazz-era divas. The motley sleuths follow the clues to an underground
speakeasy, where they entertain the crowd. The chase is on!
“Extraordinary! …
A bracing blend
of silliness and
sophistication!
It’s comic, touching
and a visual knockout.”

DakhaBrakha is a world music quartet from Kiev, Ukraine.
The name DakhaBrakha is original, outstanding and authentic at
the same time; it means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language.
Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian
traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful
and uncompromising vocal range creates a tongue-in-cheek,
transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture.
“The group mixes everything from punk-pop to

CUISINE & CONFESSIONS

Friends Package: $29-$38
Package: $31-$40
Individual: $35-$45
Circus on a human scale, the Montreal-based circus company Les 7 doigts de la main
is known for placing the extraordinary element of circus in ordinary contexts.
Their newest creation, Cuisine & Confessions colorfully displays that life happens
in the kitchen and that storytelling can happen through food. In this show, the
audience’s most visceral senses are heightened by high-flying, eye-popping
acrobatics, elaborate choreography, and pulsating music coupled with visuals
of mixing batter, baking cookies and sprinkling oregano. The show reminds
us that each individual is composed of a unique set of ingredients and that
the kitchen is an iconic meeting point that spans generations and countries
throughout the world.
Friends Hospitality at 6:45 p.m.
“A remarkably familial, interactive
ensemble piece. The audience leaves
the theatre nibbling the banana bread,
happily sniffing the smells of baking
as they go, wanting to share Cuisine

Light 100 candles and celebrate the centennial birthdays of
greats Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Mongo Santamaria — all born in the glorious year of 1917.
Jazz 100 centers on the musical direction of Danilo Perez, former
pianist for Dizzy Gillespie, whose musical DNA also includes Monk
and Santamaria. An A-list band and the deep, resonating voice of
Lizz Wright will intertwine with those early strands of jazz history.
Also featured are Chris Potter (tenor sax), Avishai Cohen (trumpet),
Wycliffe Gordon (trombone), Ben Street (bass), Adam Cruz (drums)
and Roman Diaz (percussion).

The Performing Arts Series is thrilled to partner once again with the Heart of
America Shakespeare Festival for a script-in-hand performance of The Tempest,
by William Shakespeare. It is set on a remote island, where the sorcerer Prospero,
rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place
using illusion and skillful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous
tempest, to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of
Naples to the island. There, his machinations bring about revelations, redemption
and romance, with a cast of time-honored Shakespearean characters: heroes,
villains, a princess and a magician.
The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival is celebrating its 25th year and
is delighted to collaborate with JCCC’s Performing Arts Series as one of
its “25 for the 25th” — performances and events which are providing
Shakespeare all year — presentations in all arts disciplines and focused
on Shakespeare-inspired or -derived works.

Ragtime and opera join hands as conductor Rick Benjamin and his 11-piece
orchestra blend strings, woodwinds and brass to fill the evening with sounds of
a lively past creating “America’s Original Music.” Benjamin’s scores recreate the
syncopated sounds of early musical theatre, silent cinema and vintage dance.
Celebrate the legend! For generations, the name George M. Cohan has conjured
the rollicking magic that is Broadway. And this legend is real: as America’s
beloved tunesmith and original “Song and Dance Man,” Cohan actually was the
father of modern musical theater. This exciting PRO program, starring Colin
Pritchard, offers a stirring look at George M’s amazing life and music – Give My

all the rest. You’re A Grand Old Rag is a tap-dancing bravura performance that

you know about Bobby McFerrin, we suggest the
following: Go to YouTube, type in Bobby’s name,

An extraordinary and uniquely gifted pianist from Bali, Joey Alexander marks his recording debut with the release
of My Favorite Things, nominated as Best Instrumental Jazz
Album for the 2016 GRAMMY® Awards. Joey brings a delicate,
profound and soulful touch to his own interpretation of such
classics as Giant Steps, Over the Rainbow and of course,
My Favorite Things, showcasing his talents as an arranger,
composer and bandleader. Giant Steps earned a 2016
GRAMMY® nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo.
Joey taught himself to play piano by listening with his father
to classic jazz albums. His father soon recognized his son’s
gift and his ability to grasp complicated musical concepts.
Joey began attending jam sessions with senior musicians and
he flourished, as did his love of playing jazz. The world has
taken notice of this phenomenal and exciting pianist with the
astonishing technique and soulful sound.

“The shows that Johnson County Community College offers to younger students provide them with educational
programs that are interesting and involve the student in their own learning. They can see the learning potential
outside of the classrooms and find lifelong learning. The Math Maniac show was rigorous and interactive for the
students and they continued to talk about the show many days later. We will continue to look for opportunities
to visit your campus and to share with our students how achievable college is for them.”
