Episcopal Charities Annual Report 2011 15 Years Serving New Yorkers Westside Campaign Against Hunger, Christ & St. Stephen’s, Manhattan Mission Statement Episcopal Charities, the outreach arm of the Diocese of New York, provides funding and support to parish-based programs serving children and adults in need on a non-sectarian basis. Dear Friends, Among the many pleasures I have experienced as Bishop of New York has been witnessing the growth and impact of Episcopal Charities. Today, Episcopal Charities is helping 90 parish-based programs to meet basic human needs and broaden the horizons of young people. With 300,000 people being served each year, these programs are touching more lives than ever before, addressing current challenges and building brighter futures. Since its founding 15 years ago, the organization has granted more than $10 million to parish programs… an impressive total. Yet, Episcopal Charities is far more than a funder. It offers hands-on support to programs seeking ways to better serve their neighborhoods and towns. Its quarterly workshops not only inform, but they also promote a sense of common purpose to parishes throughout the diocese. In short, Episcopal Charities is at the center of something good that benefits program recipients, volunteers and parishioners, as well as the wonderful donors who make Episcopal Charities’ work possible. Thank you for your interest in Episcopal Charities and its efforts to provide vital help, and longed-for hope, to people in need throughout our Diocese. I encourage you to offer it your ongoing support, knowing that Episcopal Charities will be a strong steward of your generosity. Faithfully, The Rt. Rev. Mark S. Sisk Bishop of New York 2 • Dear Friends, In the 15 years since Episcopal Charities’ incorporation, we have had the privilege of partnering with parishes throughout the Diocese of New York to serve the most vulnerable members of our communities. Our Basic Human Needs programs feed the hungry, house the homeless and provide companionship for the elderly. Our Youth Opportunity programs provide arts and academic-enrichment programs for area students and have enabled thousands of at-risk children and teens to enjoy summer recreation. In 2011, our number of programs grew to 90 and we provided nearly $700,000 to worthy programs serving neighbors in need. But as we reflect upon Episcopal Charities’ accomplishments, we are reminded that ours is a young organization poised to reach new levels of service through initiatives being launched in 2012: • Capacity Building Grants – We will make one-time, targeted grants to help programs have a greater impact in their communities. Grants might include funding for capital improvements, planning, training or other strategic uses designed to increase service levels. C. Douglas Mercer II President Enlistment of Episcopal Service Corps Interns – ESC is a national program that provides young adults with year-long service opportunities. While developing organizational and leadership skills, the interns will help us expand our reach, working “on the ground” with all of our programs and providing in-depth capacity-building service to several targeted programs. • Episcopal Charities’ Consultant Corps – The Consultant Corps will bring the skills and knowledge of seasoned professionals (retired and otherwise) from the business world to the aid of our programs. Each volunteer can look forward to a meaningful experience based on his or her individual interests, talents and availabilities. Our outstanding Board and talented staff continually seek to increase our capacity and that of our programs. And, thanks to the participation of our caring donors, we can look forward to reaching ever-greater numbers of individuals, families and communities in the years ahead. On behalf of Episcopal Charities and all those it serves, we thank you for your friendship and loyal support. Sincerely, Mary Beth Sasso Executive Director 3 Helping Neighbors in Need In 2012, Episcopal Charities proudly serves 90 programs throughout the Diocese of New York. Initiatives to support these critical programs include the following: Basic Human Needs Grants—Fortyseven outreach programs will receive a total of $444,500 in support in 2012. An average grant is $9,479. Cognizant of the impact that the struggling economy continues to have on those most in need, Episcopal Charities supports programs that provide services that address life’s necessities. They include the following emphases: addiction/ recovery, aging/elder care, English as a second language, adult literacy and immigrant services, feeding, HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and community reintegration and re-entry assistance for the formerly incarcerated. Youth Opportunity Grants—In 20122013, 32 programs will receive $265,000 in grants averaging $8,281 each. Areas of work include programs focusing on after school activity, performing arts and entertainment, social justice, teen parenting and summer camps. All Our Children Grants—The All Our Children initiative strengthens public schools through partnerships between schools and Episcopal parishes. The program provides $5,000 annual grants to support 17 partnerships, which match a congregation’s interests and gifts with the needs of local public school children. The initiative is funded by Trinity Wall Street, and administered by Episcopal Charities. Sustainability Institute Workshops— Episcopal Charities offers a series of trainings for its grantees, aiming to help programs achieve maximum operational success and sustainability. Workshop leaders guide participants through the singular challenges and opportunities of faith-based outreach ministry, tackling issues like volunteerism, fundraising, nutrition and measuring afterschool program outcomes. For more information on our granting programs, eligibility and the application process, please visit the “Our Grants” section of our website: http://episcopalcharities-newyork.org/. We funded 90 programs and touched the lives of well over 300,000 New Yorkers in need. Whether providing a meal, a listening ear or a safe place after school, our parishbased programs extend a hand of friendship and help to our neighbors, regardless of their religious affiliation. • Adding a new granting program, All Our Children, with the financial support of Trinity Wall Street. • Assisting programs through our Sustainability Institute workshops and one-on-one operational support from staff and volunteers. • Strengthening Episcopal Charities office staff to increase fundraising capacity and program support. • Hosting a highly successful 2011 Tribute Dinner netting more than $750,000, allowing us not only to increase funding in 2012, but also to start important new grant-making initiatives. Highlights of 2011 include: • Granting $697,000 to parish-based programs to meet human need. • Completing the Collaborative Grant program, a three-year effort to seed the creation of programs in specific areas of work. Joe was in the throes of his addiction to drugs and alcohol when he first came to eat at the Soup Kitchen at the Church of the Holy Apostles many years ago. The staff members there assisted him with counseling and referrals, as they do for thousands who come through their doors. Recently Holy Apostles received a letter from Joe, now living in Maryland, along with a donation. He said, “The Soup Kitchen helped me to get through one of the darkest points of my journey. The staff and volunteers were always friendly, welcoming and helpful. I have been clean and sober since July 11, 2006. I am back in school to study engineering, and my grades are excellent. Without the assistance you provided, who knows if I would have made it through the trying times I had when living in New York? You have my undying gratitude.” Church of the Holy Apostles, Manhattan Soup Kitchen 5 2011 Basic Human Needs Grants Parish Program Name $ Grant Manhattan Ascension Michael Fender Food Pantry 8,700 Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine Cathedral Community Cares 22,100 Christ & St. Stephen’s Brown Bag Program 8,200 Christ & St. Stephen’s West Side Campaign Against Hunger 10,800 Epiphany Wednesday Night Homeless Feeding 5,600 Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen 21,100 Holy Trinity Saturday Neighborhood Supper 3,500 Holy Trinity Senior Lunch 1,100 Holyrood Friday Food Fest 3,100 St. Bartholomew's Crossroads Community Services 16,800 St. Luke in the Fields The PLWA Project 16,600 St. Mary's, West Harlem Food Pantry & Soup Kitchen 8,700 St. Matthew and St. Timothy Sunday Meals 2,600 St. Michael's Outreach 4,900 St. Peter’s Food Pantry 8,200 Bronx Haitian Congregation of the ESL & Computer Literacy 12,300 Good Samaritan St. Edmund's Food Pantry 4,500 St. Margaret's Feeding Ministry 7,100 St. Peter’s Love Food Programs 9,400 Staten Island St. John’s Canterbury House Activity Center 6,400 Region II (includes Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties) Christ, Suffern Feeding Ministries 9,400 Grace, Nyack Rockland Parent-Child Center Family Connections 18,300 Grace, White Plains Community Center Soup Kitchen 12,300 San Andres, Yonkers Food Pantry 10,700 St. James, North Salem Brewster Community Food Pantry 11,600 St. John's, Getty Square, Yonkers Fessenden Supportive Housing 11,600 St. Mark’s, Mt. At first there were obvious occurrences: I made new friends, I learned about theater, I didn’t freeze with nerves when my first solo came along… I gained confidence. But now that I’m here, mentally debating which stories to tell and which ones not to, I’m realizing that the ways I’ve been affected by this program are countless. Yeah, I have friends now. I’m outgoing, opinionated, confident, daring… the list goes on. But forget the adjectives—let’s mention the verbs. I create. I learn. I think. I feel. I dream. I understand. I dance. I express. I laugh. I live. I love. I do. I am. I speak.” Christ Church, Bronxville Young at Arts youth program participant 8 Annual Tribute Dinner On Tuesday, November 29, Episcopal Charities held its annual Tribute Dinner at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan and welcomed 525 guests. The dinner raised more than $900,000 to support the 90 programs of Episcopal Charities. Episcopal Charities was pleased to honor Dennis M. Nally, Chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers International, and The Rt. Rev. Herbert and Mary Sudman Donovan. The Dinner Chairs were Gary Giglio of Goldman, Sachs & Co. and John H. Sargent of Morgan Stanley. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Adam Johnson of Bloomberg Television. “This dinner is not about celebrating individual accomplishments. Rather, it’s about our collective efforts in serving our communities and our fellow men and women. That is why the efforts of Episcopal Charities are so important. Through Episcopal Charities we can help others help themselves, giving them the hope that somebody out there really cares— and that tomorrow is a new day.” Dennis M. Young Alex & Michelle Zagasewski Stanley & Joyce Zulewski Ways to Help Episcopal Charities depends upon the support of those who have a place in their hearts for the less fortunate. You can show your love for others through: • A personal donation. Every gift matters and is truly appreciated. • Event attendance. All special-event proceeds are used to support service programs. • Corporate giving. Many corporations help support Episcopal Charities through matching gift programs, event attendance and employee-recommended grants. • Including Episcopal Charities of the Diocese of New York in your will. You can help neighbors in need for many years to come by including Episcopal Charities in your estate planning. • Volunteering. You can make a difference by lending your time and talents to an Episcopal Charities program in your area. To learn more, contact Episcopal Charities at (212) 316-7575 or visit our website: www.episcopalcharitiesnewyork.org. Thank you! Tragic circumstances are what prompted Ruth to seek help. Two years ago, her younger son (and sole support) took a fatal fall at a construction site. This left 79-year-old Ruth alone to fend for herself and her older son, who is in his mid-forties and has a debilitating physical impairment. By this spring, her savings depleted and with little to spend on food, Ruth looked for help and found it through St. Mark’s, which serves the community as part of the Mt. Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry. By the next month, Ruth and her son were enrolled in the pantry’s home-delivery service. It was the first time that she had ever sought emergency assistance of any kind, and it was difficult initially for her to acknowledge her position. When asked recently how she feels about receiving pantry services, Ruth replied with tearful gratitude, “How do you think I feel? We’re eating again!” St. Mark’s, Mount Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry 27 Board of directors Officers C. Douglas Mercer II, President Ridgeway Partners, LLC W.
