FROM THE PRESIDENT
December 2013 edition

The Grand Sport
Hi all,
So the festivities are just around the corner. Amazing!!!
Really looking forward to seeing you at our Awards Recognition and Christmas Party. For those that have never been,
it's a time to dust off the cobwebs from the gowns and tuxedo's that have not seen the light of day for a year or longer. Of course cocktail dress and suits are also in order if that is your preferred attire. Whatever your desire I know you
will all look great!
If you haven't already booked your seat at the table you had better contact our wonderful VP, Mike Kochanowsky, in
a hurry. He has been working hard to make this an event to remember and it is filling up fast and we may need to
turn you away if you leave it too late as we have limited seating. Remember to put on your dancing shoes to shake
your bootie to the sounds of the "Green Onions".
Before our party is the Kidz Harbor Event - Saturday, 7th December. We will meet for lunch, then caravan to Kidz Harbor to give these deserving kids a ride in our Corvette's, something that most of them will remember for a life time.
Trust me; doing this event makes you feel good. Also remember to reach into your heart and make a donation to Kidz
Harbor. This organization does not receive any federal or state aid and relies on the charity of people like you. Checks
should be made payable to Kidz Harbor and sent to Denise Munoz preferably before the 7th December. They will use
these donations to buy the kids gifts for Christmas.
Information on both events are found on the SJCC Website.
After these two events, things will quiet down for the end of the year and will kick off with our Annual Chili Cook Off.
But more on that in the next newsletter.
Want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and happy moments with your families.
Remember there will not be a club meeting in December.
See you soon and Save the Wave and thanks for being a member of the best Corvette Club in town.

Big changes in the used car market.
USA TODAY
As new-car buyers flood showrooms, used car prices are hitting a four-year low, according to an analysis released Wednesday.
Prices may go even lower next year as more new-car buyers trade in their jalopies and more used cars with expiring leases show
up on lots.
The average used car sold for $15,617 at a franchised dealership in the third quarter, the lowest since the same quarter in 2009,
when they averaged $14,808, according to the analysis by car-pricing website Edmunds.com. Prices have been easing for most
of the year, and the third-quarter average was down 2.8% from the second quarter and 0.9% from the same quarter last year.
Another used-car price watcher, Tom Kontos of Adesa Analytical Services, noted a tiny uptick in wholesale prices in October, but
says the overall trend is down.
Why prices are dropping:
• New-car sales. Auto dealers' new-car sales are on track to exceed 15 million. While not quite up to the boom years of a decade ago, the bonanza has meant a flood of trade-ins. To move them out, dealers have cut prices. "New cars automatically bring
some used cars out of the woodwork," says Kontos.
• Off-lease cars. By 2010, cheap lease deals abounded, and dealers were eager to get those new cars into the hands of recession-weary drivers who were hesitant or just couldn't make the purchase price payments. Those leased cars are coming back to
be sold as used cars.
"There was a big rise in leases," says Richard Arca, senior pricing manager for Edmunds.com. Now, "we're seeing the result."
• Better economy. Even drivers who held out during the recession, keeping their old cars running, now are ready to throw in
the towel and buy a newer, used car. Lower unemployment rates and an overall better economy make it easier to buy a used
car, plus auto loan rates are still low, and lenders are lending.
Arca cautions, however, that used-car prices still aren't as low as they dipped a decade ago. Prices of some late-model used cars
still are so close to the price of a new car that it might make more sense to buy new, he says.
Kontos notes, too, that there hasn't been "a dramatic decline in used-car prices or a flood of used cars on the market" because
of the gradual nature of the recovery.
Look for more declines he says.
"The used-car market, in terms of pricing, is poised for further softening," Kontos says, He predicts even more cars will be pouring into the used-car market, making them all cheaper.
Best Regards,
Paul Fisher

FROM THE EDITOR
December 2013 edition

The Grand Sport
Happy Holidays!
Another year over (well almost!) hard to believe. The time goes by so fast doesn’t it?
I’d like to take a minute to thank everyone for all the help you have given me over the past two years. I could not have done
this job without all your help. This is the greatest corvette club ever!!
That said, this is my last newsletter, I am going to take a break and be a P.O.M. for a while. It has been a very hard year and I
think it is time just relax. I do know that I am handing the reins of the Grand Sport over to very capable hands. Linda Lee will
be your new editor and I just know she is going to do a fantastic job! Please give her all the support, help and cooperation that
you all have given to me over the past years. Linda if they give you a hard time just let me know, I still have a few secrets that
might just work!
I hope you were able to join us for this months activity, the Fall Foliage Run, and the Veteran’s Day Parade...both were a great
time. If you weren’t able to attend, you missed some great fun!
Join us for any or all, of our upcoming activities, the Christmas Party is coming up, that is always a great time. Also, the Kidz
Harbor and then into the new year, the Bandit Run and the Chili Cookoff, just to name a few. Always fun with good food and
lots of opportunities for fast cars. Lots of choices, lots of fun….Check out the calendar!
The pictures that are used in the Grand Sport are downloaded from Shutterfly. If you want to see more pictures of the fun had
by all, go to Shutterfly and check out all the pictures that have been loaded on there! Don’t stop at looking at the pictures, join
us at the events, take your own pictures then put them on Shutterfly for all to see. We need more folks taking pictures and
posting them!!
As always, I would remind everyone that the Grand Sport is the clubs newsletter and I encourage everyone to step up and be
heard. If you attend an event, please feel free to share your experience by writing up a short account of the event and sending
it to me. You don’t have to be a writer to send something in, just relate your experience with the event. Plus, you get member
points when you submit an article!
In this issue of the Grand Sport, you will find the usual articles and reports plus a feature on the Fall Foliage Run, the Veteran’s
Day Parade and the Vettes and Jets event. As well as Club News, Advertisers, Event Flyers, and the Calendar are all in there too.
Please take some time to read all about this past month’s fun.
Be sure to check out the flyers for upcoming events and start making your plans to join us for the fun!
Be safe out there!

MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Membership
(as of 11/18/2013 )
December, 2013
We had one new member approved at the October Board meeting, but after the GrandSport deadline for
this article. So let us now welcome—and wish a belated October birthday--to

Brianna Bakenhus, daughter of Fred and Lourdes in Katy; she has her hands on a white 1987 coupe, and
expands this ‘B’ clan to seven members.
For this month of November we enjoy two former members moving back to Houston…
 Ben Raguse of Houston, now flexing a black 2008 Z51 coupe
 Rick Owen of Pearland with his 2008 silver coupe
…and a new 4-member ‘B’ clan to challenge the Bakenhus dynasty
 Danny and Beverly Beaty of Katy, breaking in a days-old torch red 2014 Stingray coupe
 Adam Beaty and Claudia Sandoval of Houston, also breaking in a 2014 velocity yellow Stingray coupe
Our membership climbs to 209! Renewals and auto-renewals for 2014 currently are at about 80%.
New membership and late renewals remain at $70 (single) and $90 (couple). New members joining after
September 1 receive membership for the balance of this year and all of next year as well, and thus are
“automatically” renewed for 2014. Please make out your check to SJCC and mail to me, or give it to me or
an officer. Thanks!

SAN JACINTO CORVETTE CLUB, Inc
Board of Director’s Meeting Minutes for Grand Sport
October 21, 2013
The Board of Directors of the San Jacinto Corvette Club, Inc. held their monthly meeting at AutoNation Chevrolet Gulf Freeway, 13800 Gulf Freeway, Houston, Texas 77034. A quorum of the Board was present. President, Suzanne Ansley, officiated and called
the meeting to order at 7:00 P. M.
Directors in attendance were Ken Bakenhus, Frank Bobbie, Bob Pattillo, Mark White, and Charles Ynman.
Carolyn Cannata did not attend. Officers present were: Suzanne Ansley, Mike Kochanowsky, Marcia Ynman, Chip Pearce, Bill Heede, John Walker, Patty Walker, Marlene Pattillo and Paul Grout. Other club
members present were: Marilyn Bakenhus, Paula Bobbie, Ginny Pearce, Geoff Ansley, Ken Koenig, Kitty
Berger and Bob Berger.
The Board approved the Board of Director’s Meeting minutes from September, 2013.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer, John Walker, distributed the Treasurer’s Report to Board Members and
announced the club’s monthly expenses. The Board approved the minutes.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
National Corvette Museum - Ken Bakenhus discussed the following issues:
The Motor Sports track is still under construction and on schedule.
Regarding the Baron River Lodge accommodations in Kentucky, Ken advised that the Lodge wanted a
rental contact signed that would pledge payment for a minimum number of rooms. After a brief
discussion, it was decided to not sign the contract. Accordingly, the Lodge will release the rooms
on October 31, 2013.
News Editor: Patty Walker requested all newsletter items by October 22, 201, and also asked for pictures
from the Ryan Hunter Ray meet and greet event.
New Business: Patty Walker advised that since she will not be the Grand Sport Editor in 2013, the new editor would need the software “Microsoft Office Publisher”. Accordingly, the Board authorized $200 for the
purchase of the “Microsoft Office Publisher” for the new News Editor to be elected at the November, 2013
Members Meeting.
Old Business:
1. Bob Pattillo stated that the Funkana Rally raised $205.00 and had expenses of $205. 00. This resulted in
a zero net statement for the event.
Regarding the club property, Ken Bakenhus completed the inventory and emailed the list to all board members prior to the meeting. He noted that the title to the trailer is still missing. Bob Pattillo suggested that
Ken secure a duplicate title. Ken asked the board members to email to him any corrections needed on the
inventory list.
Suzanne Ansley, President, thanked members who attended the Ryan Reay event and Bob Pattillo for chairing the Funkana event.
Since there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:10 P. M.

From your VeeP
Well, the time for our club Christmas party has finally arrived, well almost, just days away. I
hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving and enjoyed sharing with family and friends.
I am running full speed ahead finalizing details, even though it appears I am running in a
tight circle. This action is referred to as a Kochanowsky-ism and is generally described by
me with another of my stupid quotes… “When in danger, or in doubt, run in circles –
Scream and Shout”
Before I get any further in this epistle I really need to thank everyone for participating in the
monthly raffles, and auctions, you are the ones that made it possible for us to have the
great band for the evening. Thanks again to those that donated items for the raffles, they
were much appreciated. Special thanks to Marilyn Bakenhus, and Ken Koenig for helping
with the raffles each month, I would never have survived without them.
The other day I was rooting around in the Dungeon of Marvelous Prizes and Stuff when
Kathie called out to see what I was doing saying “Get out of there, you don’t have another
raffle till next year.” “Ha” I said. “I happen to be looking for my tux, I know it is in here
somewhere!”
You will need to watch your email notices from San Jac communications for a lot more details on information for the party. Ie where we will be gathering before the festivities begin,
what we are having for dinner – this is the most trusting group. But someone said when it
comes to food I have never done wrong.
Congregations to Al and Karen Schubert on winning the room raffle at the Hilton.
See ‘ya at the Party

HAPPENINGS...
Happenings….
This is my last article as Activities Director and I want to start by saying “Congratulations!” (and thank you!)
to Valarie Hendershot for being elected the 2014 Activities Director. I know she will do an outstanding job,
and I am looking forward to all the activities she will add to the calendar for next year. Does this make me a
“POM” again??
We were once again well-represented at the Veteran’s Day Parade thanks to the efforts of Charles Ynman.
This is a great time to not only show off our cars, but to also express our patriotism and our thanks to all the
veterans. Hope everyone who participated had a great time.
And, as usual, Jeb and Lori Jonas put together a wonderful Fall Foliage tour. Not only did we get to drive on
some great back roads, we had a fine meal waiting for us at the end of the run. Thanks to Jeb, Lori, Mike,
Geoff and everyone else who made this happen.
We only have a couple of club events left on the calendar for 2013. On December 7 th, Denise Munoz and
Charles Ynman have arranged our annual visit to the children at Kidz Harbor. This is a big event for the kids
as they not only get gifts - they also get to go for a ride in our Vettes. Check out the flyer in this newsletter
and on the website for all the details.
The annual Awards Recognition Banquet and Christmas Party will be held on December 13 th at the Nasa
Road Hilton. With Mike and Kathie Kochanowsky planning this event, I know it is going to be spectacular. If
you have not made your reservations, please do so immediately – you don’t want to miss this event. Again,
the flyer is in this newsletter and on our website.
Thanks to everyone who stepped up and made my job easier this past year by planning events. It has been
a pleasure to work with each and every one of you! I feel that we had a very good year with a variety of activities to choose from. That is what makes SJCC the BEST Corvette club around.
Let’s continue to have some fun!

Championship littered with wannabee’s, never couldbee’s , whiners ,and some few like the legendary Fluffy
(driver) and Fast(corvette) who made heroic attempts for the top spot.
Remember , SJCC men had wannabee’s and whiners like ole Fred (retired master sommelier) who could not
even catch a cowboy hat, Mr. C. Huck who folded the tent after one lap(same bad tranny), the token White
guy who talked a good race, and the people counter who scared the beejeepers out of flagmen by going
backwards thru the finish line.
Then along came the ole Chicken Rancher ,that payed no never mind to the wannabee’s and whiners, and
single handley drug the SJCC men to the very top like a squirrel in a big Oak tree.
Some will say our SJCC governor and prez made it to the top, but that’s girls racing.
For evermore, the ole Chicken Rancher will be at the apex of SJCC racing lore.

Vettes & Jets
September 13-15
Vettes & Jets is an event I have always thought would be great fun and something to see. Just imagine
seeing all those pretty corvettes shined up and glistening on the deck of an aircraft carrier right next to a
sleek jet. Unfortunately it did not work out this year, but I have not given up, someday...someday.
In the mean time, check out all the fantastic pictures that Larry Webber took, a few are below, but there
are many more on Shutterfly, so check them out.

Veteran’s Day Parade
November 11, 2013
Houston Salutes American Heroes
Veteran’s Day Celebration Parade
Monday, November 11, 2013
Once again, the San Jacinto Corvette Club paraded alongside veterans to the sounds of marching bands. SJCC has several members who have served our Country and stood firm during both wartime and peacetime.
This annual SJCC event honors our brave veterans and celebrates our Country’s freedom. This year was especially successful
because it was a workday and thousands of people came to the streets of downtown Houston to make sure veterans knew they
were appreciated. As was the case last year, we were authorized by the City to have a limited number of Corvettes in the parade, and slots for the parade were filled within one week of the event announcement.
The majority of our Vettes had veterans from different wars riding in them. The City of Houston organizers were so impressed
by our appearance last year that we were asked to have State Representative Mary Ann Perez of the 144 th District as one of honored guests.
Our 12 cars, parading two by two, gleamed in the sunlight as they passed the reviewing stand. Our drivers held their Corvettes
within inches of each other throughout the parade. They resembled the precision flying teams of the Navy Blue Angels and Air
Force Thunderbirds. The group received applause and recognition throughout the parade route. This year, the parade was televised for the first time and made available on Channel 13’s website.
This wonderful event would not have been possible without the support of the entire club and the participation of the members
who take their valuable time to prepare their cars. We already have a few members who have reserved a spot in the Parade for
2014.
After the Parade, Co-Chairman Larry Webber made arrangements for the participants and the veterans to meet at Chile’s where
all enjoyed lunch. Chile’s provided a complimentary entrée to the veterans.
Thank you to all SJCC members who supported this event and to Larry Webber, the event co-chairman.

Fall Foliage
November 17, 2013
I am really sorry I had to miss this great run. It looks to me like it was a really fun run, followed by delicious barbeque. What a
time to have the grandkids stay over and make us miss this fun trip. Just take a look at the pictures ! Fun right? Although I did
hear a few stories of a couple of groups getting separated and lost along the way. I bet there is more to those stories, I’ll have
to dig a little more and find out the real scoop. Check back for an update!
