inside of the newsletter:
Fr o m t h e D e s k o f t h e D i r e c t o r
Forty five years ago, physician Dame Cicely Saunders first called specialized care for those
facing a life-limiting illness “hospice;” and for the past thirty years Home Hospice has been
journeying with individuals who are living with a life-limiting illness, their family members
and friends, and all in our community who grieve. During those thirty years we have remained
faithful to the vision of our founding board members as to what Home Hospice can do for each
individual whose life touches ours - providing comfort and the highest quality care, focusing
on improving the quality of life when nothing can be done about the quantity, supporting
loved ones in their efforts to make this special journey as caregivers alongside family and
friends, and providing outstanding education, support, guidance and care throughout our
community to those who have experienced a loss.
What would matter to you during your final journey or during the final journey of someone you love? Does
remaining comfortable so you may enjoy each and every moment matter? Does guidance and support at every turn in
order that you know what to expect and how to plan matter? Does it matter to have the opportunity to have loved ones
call in messages of support from wherever they are and have those messages recorded to listen to again and again?
Does having someone talk with you about spiritual concerns at this special time matter? Does spending time doing
what you love most with those you love most matter? Does having time to finish that “pesky unfinished business”
matter? Does the opportunity to have your life story turned into a book for family and friends matter? Does it matter
for your family to know that help is available for them as they grieve? Does knowing your team is part of Home
Hospice, a knowledgeable, experienced provider that has made this journey with over five thousand individuals and
families for thirty years learning valuable lessons each and every time matter?
I was recently asked, “what should drive hospice care – compassion or compensation?” The person who asked
simply wondered if all of the programs and services, all the staff training and education, all the community education
and support, all the community knowledge and involvement that comes from being “from here,” and all the care
and support of everyone with or without insurance, was really important, whether it really mattered at this most
significant time of life, whether building a program based on truly meeting people’s needs, in a multitude of ways
with compassion and understanding, truly matters.
We believe that it all matters because your life matters. When you or a loved one is faced with the news that your
precious final journey has begun, turn to your trusted neighbor and know that you will receive the best in hospice
care available to you. Let us bring our experience and expertise to you and those you love, and share in your journey
supporting you with all the valuable lessons we have learned throughout the years.

Thanks For The Support
Thanks to the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club #163 who
worked with Loose Wheels, Texas to hold a benefit fundraiser
for Home Hospice on October 8. Pictured is the flyer that the
motorcycle club used as well as a picture of some of the many
Home Hospice volunteers who attended the event. Pictured are
employees Kathi Kirby, Sheryl Myers, Nora Montgomery and
Board of Director Lyn Jostes.
Thanks to Wilson N. Jones Community Foundation
for sharing the proceeds from their successful
golf tournament with Camp Dragonfly. Pictured
are Julie Mitchell, Chairman of the Foundation
along with Jolene Senek and Vicky Lindsey, Camp
Dragonfly Directors, and Sherry Little, Executive
Director, receiving the check.
Thanks to the 150 or so students at C.W. Hayes Primary School in Whitesboro for
volunteering to be part of the Love Letters project in which students create cards
and write letters throughout the year to patients of Home Hospice. Home Hospice
Volunteer Coordinator, Barb Samuelson and 2nd grade teacher, Brittanny Bennett
coordinated the project.
Thanks to the Callisburg ISD Art Student’s support.
Under the direction of art teacher Tiffany Rawling,
the students will be decorating gift bags for Home
Hospice to use for our Bear Hugs program, Christmas,
Easter and other events.
Holiday 2011
Thanks to the Texoma
Christian
School
for
selecting Home Hospice
as one of the work sites for
this year’s Service Day. A
group of students under
the direction of Elizabeth
Meeks decorated sacks to
use with our Bear Hugs
project. Bear Hugs is a
project in which the family
of a patient picks out a
favorite article of clothing
and our expert sewers
create a very huggable
memory bear.

In October, the Auxiliary presented the staff with ‘Casserole Ole’ – a buffet
of entrée and vegetable casseroles as well as desserts. After partaking in all the
deliciousness, the staff responded with resounding cries of “OLE!”
Thursday December 1 at 11:30 a.m., The Auxiliary held their Christmas
Luncheon in Kelly Square. Instead of gift giving between the members, they
chose to adopt the Home Hospice Wish List and donate some of these needed
items.

Celebrating November National Hospice Month
The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s 2011 theme is
“Helping you put the pieces into place to ensure that you and your loved ones find
Comfort, dignity and respect.
We listen, we care.”
The modern hospice movement was begun in England by
Dr. Cicely Saunders and is still based on her belief that each
moment of your life matters.
history of hospice and home hospice
The first American hospice was founded in Connecticut in
1974
home hospice of Grayson County was founded in 1982 by
a group of local visionaries
The first Light Up a Life event was held in 1984 and was
run by Patti Castleberry with a logo designed by Dr. Daniel
Setterburg
home hospice of Cooke County’s office was opened in
1988
For-profit hospice companies begin operating in our area
in the late 1990’s
The “rules” for the organization of all hospice organizations
are dictated by Medicare regulations
Interestingly, studies have shown that patients living under
the care of hospice tend to live longer
how home hospice goes over and above the basic
requirements:
Staff members specifically dedicated to working after
hours and on the week ends to meet patient and family
needs
Bear Hugs program to make a teddy bear from a patient’s
clothing as a tangible memory for the family
Legacy program brings in a volunteer to take down an
oral history of the patient, writes the history and the
patient and/or family receives a booklet with pictures
and the history
Petal Pushers flowers are taken to patients and family
weekly with a goal of each patient receiving flowers
monthly

What our Families Say:
I don’t have the words to fully describe the gratitude my family and I have for the excellent team assigned to my mother
and us. They were always comforting, reassuring and caring.
Twice I had to call late at night and the response was excellent.
If it hadn’t been for our main nurse, and my heavenly Father,
I wouldn’t have been able to take care of my mom at home
until she passed. From the aides, minister, social worker and
nurses all made a nightmare into a beautiful experience. I will
never stop praising and recommending Home Hospice. What
a blessing to have such a wonderful organization available to
help the transition from life to death. Thank you!
My mother-in-law had a stroke at the assisted living center
and was hospitalized for one week until her death. During
that time, Home Hospice was so helpful to us. They were
supportive and caring and so professional. The doctor who
visited us was an absolute angel. He was amazing and we felt
so comforted by him and the entire staff. Many thanks.
I was surprised by how thoughtful and caring the volunteers
were. I am so grateful to all those involved who assisted me in
the end. Words can not express my appreciation for all they
did to ensure Mom was comfortable. I thank you all! God
bless.
You guys are a God send for mom and dad, both. It was a
blessing to have you as part of our family, not just for mom
and dad, but us kids, too. Thank you for everything. God bless.

Bereavement Opportunities in 2012
Home Hospice endeavors to provide optimal grief support for all persons in our communities. These programs assist
individuals and families who are struggling with the death of a significant person in their lives and are offered free of
charge. These grief support groups will provide comfort, guidance and support to all those who grieve.
When Life Changes Support group
Because there is a need for those grieving to be able to come to a safe place in order to talk about their grief or
listen to others who are experiencing grief, a new four-week support group will begin in January. This structured
support group will focus on grief and loss. Bereavement Coordinator, Jolene Senek says “Many who are grieving
feel alone and isolated, but you see a ray of hope, through the sadness, in their faces when they realize they are
not alone and recognize that others are experiencing some of the same thoughts.” There is no fee to attend, but
registration is required so that appropriate materials may be prepared. Please contact Jolene Senek at jolene.

Caregiver Talk
Dr. Stan Goldberg
made two Caregiving
presentations
on
Thursday, December

College.
Those who attended, both family
caregivers and professional
caregivers,
learned ideas, suggestions and tips for caregiving and the professionals learned the importance of incorporating the family into the
team that cares for patients.
The seminar was sponsored by Home
Hospice and Dr. Mary Hebert, Texas Oncology.
Spotlight on The Staff
Pictured are the Psycho/Social staff members. This
department includes Bereavement, Social Work and our

spiritual support, advance directives, and assistance with
end-of-life issues, including funeral planning and grief
counseling.
Camp Dragonfly
Camp Dragonfly a grief camp for
children ages 8-12, was held October
7-9th at All Saints Camp on Lake
Texoma. All of the 21 campers
have experienced the death of an
important person in their lives
within the last two years The campers arrived unaware
of what to expect, but quickly bonded while making
their name tags and finding their Project Linus blankets
waiting for them. It was truly a fast and furious weekend,
going from one activity to the next. The camp activities
give a voice to the children’s feelings, whether it’s with
words or body language. Camp Director Jolene Senek
said, “As the volunteers were leaving on Sunday we were

suddenly surrounded by a swarm of dragonflies as if to
tell us ‘good job!’ ‘great camp! we saw what you did and
it was awesome!’”
One of the campers is pictured holding a dragonflyshaped leaf she found

next session of Camp
Dragonfly will be held in
