August 2016 Celebrated Fiddler Visits The Commons We’re Flying High with the USAF Thunderbirds About a week ago there was a rumor going through the halls of The Commons, Enid’s native son and celebrated fiddler, Kyle Dillingham was going to bring his fiddle and play for us. Well, the flyers went up and the rumor was true. Mr. Dillingham would be here next week to play his fiddle for us. We were really excited to have the World renowned fiddle sensation and the University of Central Oklahoma’s Musical Ambassador, Kyle Dillingham, and his band Horseshoe Road at The Commons! Named Oklahoma’s Musical Ambassador by Governor Henry, Kyle has helped develop over thirty relationships between universities in Oklahoma and overseas universities, and brought attention to the name of Oklahoma in 30 countries.Even with all of his awards and honors Kyle still remembers his roots, and he agreed to come back to The Commons where he used to play once every month while he was in in high school. Like years ago, the residents and staff packed in the great room to listen to the musical magic that Kyle can bring from a instrument called a fiddle. What a joyful time we had with Kyle and the Horseshoe Road! We enjoyed it so much that maybe next time Kyle is in town rumors will fly again. On the morning of July 22 the residents of The Commons were very honored to host a Meet and Greet with some of the highly experienced fighter pilots and support team of the Air Force’s official air demonstration team-The Thunderbirds. Our time with the Thunderbirds started out with the team, #3 Major Alexander Goldfein, Right Wing Pilot, #12 Captain Sgt. Sara Harper, Master Sgt. Chris Lanning, Staff Sgt. Jonathan Dayao, and Tec. Sgt. Michael Duckens introducing themselves and telling us a little bit of the history of the Thunderbirds. After the introduction the team members informally visited with our residents. That afternoon The Commons was invited to pull up right up to the flight line at Vance Air Force Base to watch the Thunderbirds perform their heart stopping demonstration of aerial acrobatics with F-16 fighter jets. After the demonstration we were once again treated to meeting more of the pilots and support team. Just before The Commons’ bus rolled away we had Staff Sgt. Derric Young and Tech. Sgt. Allan Habel hop on the bus and visit with our residents. It is always an honor to be able to shake the hands of those who serve our country and it was a special honor to meet these young men and women who wear the distinguished emblem of “America’s Ambassadors in Blue.” 8/2 Shopping at Walmart Enid Symphony Summer Series “Maestro & Missus” 8/3 Back Porch Grilling 8/4 Mennonite Choir 8/8 Janae Buller 8/9 Healthy Eating- Avocados Resident Council Meeting @4:00 p.m. 8/10 Lunch & Learn- Enid `“From Tumbleweeds to Traffic Cops: Early Memories of Vance AFB” 8/11 The Commons Birthday Party w/ Doug Swanson 8/12 Game Night 8/15 Maynard Nightengale 8/16 Enid Symphony Summer Series “ Juliana Overmier-Flute” 8/17 Book Club 8/18 Ice Cream Social 8/19 Supper Out- Pond Creek* “Greasy Steve’s Cafe” 8/22 Vance Lecture Series “WWII and the Oklahoma Homefront” 8/23 Enid Symphony Summer Series “Jazz Night” 8/24 DOG DAY DERBY Melody Girls 8/25 Lunch Bunch-Enid “Pac a Sac” 8/26 Yellow Rose Dinner Theater-OKC* “Elvis” 8/29 Out & About- Kingfisher New time-1:30 *-Please Sign Up Meet Your Neighbor… Ed Polk has been an Enid transplant since October 1979. Please sign up before Aug. 12th. Liz’s Laughs No matter what we do, we can never get away from the telemarketers – here are 10 ways to Terrorize a Telemarketer. 1. Tell them to talk VERY SLOWLY, because you want to write EVERY WORD down. 2. When they ask ”How are you today?” Tell them! “I’m so glad you asked because no one these days seems to care, and I have all these problems; my arthritis is acting up, my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died.” 3. If they say they’re John Doe from XYZ Company, ask them to spell their name. Then ask them to spell the company name. Then ask them where their company is located. Continue asking them personal questions or questions about their company for as long as necessary. Such as: When did their company start, who was the founder, are they still with the company? 4. Cry out in surprise, the name of the telemarketer such as “Judy! Is that you? Oh my goodness! Judy, how have you been?” Hopefully this will give “Judy” a few brief moments of pause as she tries to figure out where she could know you from. 5. If MCI calls trying to get you to sign up for the Family and Friends plan, reply, in as SINISTER a voice as you can, “I don’t have any friends…would you be my friend?” 6. If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for bankruptcy and you could sure use some money. 7. Tell the telemarketer you are on “home arrest” and ask if they could bring you some Dr. Pepper and chips. 8. After the telemarketer gives their spiel, ask him/her to marry you. When they get all flustered, tell them that you could not just give your credit card number to a complete stranger. 9. Tell the telemarketer you are busy at the moment and ask them if they will give you their HOME phone number so you can call them back. When the telemarketer explains that they cannot give out their HOME number, you say “I guess you don’t want anyone bothering you at Home, right?” The telemarketer will agree and you say, “Now you know how I feel!” 10. Insist that the caller is really your buddy Leon, playing a joke, “Come on Leon, cut it out! Seriously, Leon, how’s your momma?” Monday, August 29th @ 1:30 $4 admission fee Let’s go back to the time when variety stores were the norm when we visit the TG&Y is Still Alive: The 80th Anniversary Exhibit! at the Chisholm Trail Museum in Kingfisher. After visiting the good old days at the museum we will stop for a refreshing orangeade at the local soda fountain. They joined right in and played Bingo with us! The North Carolina youth were on a mission trip to Enid to help repair playground equipment and teach at Vacation Bible School. They had some extra time and dropped into The Commons for a quick visit. What a joy it was to meet and play games with them. We are so glad serendipity smiled on us and brought us some new young friends. Trinity was in the Pink on July 7th at 2:00 as we all gathered together to celebrate Bea, Wilma and Lucy’s birthday. We are so grateful to Wilma’s family for providing all the birthday goodies. Not only were our tummies filled with yummy cake and ice cream but our ears were filled with sweet music from the little black piano as Doug Swanson played beautiful tunes. Bea even joined in singing New York, New York. And Lucy danced with Letta a step or two. We had a very good time celebrating with our July birthday ladies. Arm Chair Travel To Old Mexico Book Reading Local author Joyce Martin came to book reading on July 18 and 20 to share from her personal writings. We gleaned from her that it is very important to be a grandparent who is willing to pour time into grandchildren. Because Joyce had a grandmother who shared with her she knew where to turn to in hard and difficult times. Her writings come out of personal encounters of comfort and encouragement from the Lord. Joyce encouraged us to start writing our own stories, feelings and thoughts. You never know who they might encourage. Our tour guides through Mexico were three beautiful senoritas from old Mexico, Consuela, Irene and Sylvia. They took us to many places in Mexico, some we knew of and some we did not. We dined on authentic rice, beans, chicken enchiladas. Our guides hand made tortillas and salsa the Mexican way right before our eyes. We also sipped on a cantaloupe drink that was not too sweet but very refreshing. Many stories were shared about their childhood and how they came to the USA. We all enjoyed setting in our chairs and traveling to Mexico with these fine ladies.
