Annual Report - Currier Museum of Art
2008
Annual
Report
Dear Members and Friends,
The last fiscal year (July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008) culminated in
the landmark achievement of reopening the new Currier Museum of Art.
On March 30, 2008, the museum opened to the public after 22 months of
construction. Governor Lynch and Dr. Susan Lynch, along with Manchester
Mayor Frank Guinta, helped to cut the ribbon as hundreds of visitors waited
with anticipation to enter.
Staff, volunteers and trustees eagerly greeted more than 25,000 people
during a week of free admission. In the days immediately prior to the public
reopening, we had the opportunity to celebrate and thank donors and
members for their support of the Currier. Their dedication and generosity
were key to the success of the $13.4 million capital campaign, which funded
the expansion.
The reaction of visitors was overwhelmingly enthusiastic as we learned
from a survey conducted during the first eight weeks of operations. Never
before has so much of the collection been exhibited at one time. Every
gallery – including three new ones – was completely reinstalled. Much of the
new reinterpretation plan – including new labels, special videos, brochures
for self-guided tours – reintroduced visitors to the Currier’s outstanding
collections. Many recently acquired works of art – from the murals by Sol
Lewitt installed in the Henry Melville Fuller Winter Garden, print portfolios
by Donald Judd and Terry Winters to the Pop Art sculpture The Family by
Marisol Escobar – were on exhibition for the first time. Likewise collections of
glass, contemporary ceramics, furniture and photography are now more fully
revealed in the expanded museum. For the first time, there is a gallery devoted
to art of New Hampshire and the region. The library, with new compact
shelving, has received several important gifts from David G. Carter and the
estates of Ed and Mary Scheier and of Robert Cross Vergobbi.
Visitors clearly enjoyed the Currier’s new shop, which had moved from its
temporary home at the Currier Downtown on Hanover Street in Manchester
to its new, visible location in the Charlotte and Ruth Anderson Lobby. Another
new amenity that enhances a visit to the Currier is the Winter Garden Café,
which served more than 1,500 meals during reopening week.
The outreach into schools that was carried out through Currier on the
Move, while the museum was closed for construction, readied and inspired
many teachers to bring classes to the museum. The two new classrooms
accommodated 3,051 students in just three months alone, and also offered
activity space for several new education programs for families on Wednesdays
and Saturdays.
2
The concert series opened to great acclaim with
performances by the Borromeo String Quartet, Cody
Michaels and Virginia Eskin. The180-seat auditorium,
which has outstanding acoustics, has been proclaimed
by many who have performed there as one of the region’s
finest venues for chamber groups.
In the months of preparation for the reopening, staff and
Board engaged in a re-branding and comprehensive
communications strategy to clarify for the public the
museum’s vision to serve a broader constituency.
This effort led to the redesign of all publications and
communications vehicles, including a complete redesign
and amplification of the website. Now at www.currier.
org users can find a wealth of information about the
collections, exhibitions, and programs; they can also join
as members, peruse the catalogue of books in the library,
or sign up for classes at the Currier Museum Art Center.
Throughout this time of transition, the Currier Museum Art
Center flourished with strong enrollment and additions to
the curriculum. New class offerings in its “Art Foundation
for Children” included Drawing for Kids and Home
School: Fundamentals of Art for children ages 4-10 years,
and cartoon animation, jewelry-making, painting and
photography in “ArtVentures for Preteens.”
The Art Center continued its outreach commitment to
studio-based learning experiences through its partnership
with the Manchester Schools, under the umbrella of the
21 st Century program. Art Center faculty taught curricula
based upon the museum’s collection in four elementary
and four middle schools reaching 250 Manchester Public
School students. In a parallel effort, faculty reached more
than 350 students in schools as far away as Milford,
Amherst, Brookline and Concord in the popular foursession “Art from Art” program. This year was the tenth
anniversary of New Hampshire Art Allstate, which invited
alums – now numbering more than 500 – to visit the new
Currier and report back on their current art experiences.

Museum visitors enjoy the Family Studio activities. Manager of Donor
Relations Karen Moynihan, Director of Public Programs Leah Fox, and
Visitor Services Manager Barbara Case helping out during the reopening
week. Visitors to the museum explore and enjoy the new glass gallery.
The Guild of Volunteers was a source of tremendous
support in helping reach communities throughout the
state and, equally important, in welcoming visitors back
into the museum. With many new opportunities for
volunteering, the Guild stepped up and more than met the
challenge of running a new facility.
3
The Advisory Council took a leadership role during the
construction period in introducing new audiences to the
Currier, its programs and collections through events held
in Portsmouth, Exeter, Peterborough and Jaffrey Center.
Because of the Council’s efforts, the museum is better
known across much of the state.
This year also saw a transition in leadership of the Board.
Patrick Duffy served with great distinction as President of
the Board for five years of exciting change for the Currier.
Board and staff thank him for his tremendous dedication.
Each year it is a privilege and great pleasure to
acknowledge and thank all who have enriched the
Currier. This past fiscal year (July1, 2007 through June
30, 2008) was a milestone in the museum’s history. The
transformation of the Currier’s facility and the enhancement
of its collections and programs could not have been
achieved without the partnership of volunteers, trustees,
advisory council members, donors, and staff. We extend
many, many thanks to one and all.

current year’s operations in excess of expenses
Note: The pro forma statement of operating activities recognized the investment income and transfers from the endowment funds in accordance with
the Board of Trustees funding policy as support revenue rather than all investment income, gains and losses. In addition, certain non-operating
expenditures are not recognized, including collection items purchased but not capitalized, depreciation and interest expense. This presentation
also excludes the change in fair value of the interest rate swap. Accordingly, this presentation differs significantly from the statement of activities
as presented in the Museum’s audited financial statements and from generally accepted accounting principles. The Museum’s policy is to annually
allocate 5% of the average valuation of the operating endowment funds over the previous ten (twenty in 2007) quarters to fund the Museum’s
operations. Management believes this pro forma presentation reflects the true support and revenue available to fund the Museum’s annual operating
expenses for the periods presented. The Museum does not capitalize its collection and objects of art. The Museum support and revenues excludes
proceeds from deaccessioned collections and objects of art.
