As an added feature to this year’s furnace guide, we offered all furnace manufacturers some ink for commentary on 2015-2016 heating offerings. Here are comments by those who responded. Q: What’s new and exciting about your new furnace line? American Standard: “This is American Standard’s most efficient and powerful gas furnace – and also its most comfortable. With AccuLink™ communicating capability, continuous Comfort-R mode and an array of other innovate features, the Platinum Series gives your home maximum efficiency with controlled comfort.” — Jim Lowell, HVAC product manager, Ingersoll Rand. Carrier:“We are launching a new, lowcapacity furnace for applications needing 26 kBTUs. This product will be very efficient, 95 AFUE, with blower options of both a PSC and BLDC. This product was designed for multiCarrier Infinity 98 family housing applications, a segment that is experiencing tremendous growth. It’s also attractive to the low energy home segment, which we believe will continue to expand. Carrier is committed to developing new products to meet the new and changing demands.” — Tom Archer, heating product manager. Rheem & Ruud: “Rheem and Ruud product developers are always taking suggestions from contractors to make their lives easier out in the field. For example, now both Rheem Prestige Series furnace Upflow/Horizontal and Downflow models have the PlusOne Di- Rheem Prestige agnostics, easy-to-read dual 7-segment alphanumeric LED display and are also EcoNet-enabled — a service technician’s dream because both make diagnostics easier. “The Upflow/Horizontal model has 20-plus new features for a completely redesigned, trouble free furnace that installs easier than ever — just what a contractor wants. Some of these new features include quarter-turn door knobs for easy access inside REVERSE YOUR THINKING 4-WAY REVERSING VALVES FOR HEAT-PUMP APPLICATIONS DiversiTech’s new DRV Series of Reversing Valves are built to OEM-quality standards for years of reliable performance. They are designed as drop-in replacements for use in most heat pump air conditioner applications. Ask for them at your local DiversiTech distributor. www.diversitech.com circle 20 on reader service card 32 | CONTRACTING BUSINESS.com | SEPTEMBER 2015 0915 Gas Furnace Guide_AMD.indd 32 9/21/15 2:33 PM 2015 2016 Guide to High-efficiency Gas Furnaces the unit without using tools and the blower is mounted on a rail system – it only takes two fasteners to be removed to pull the blower shelf out for service. “We use our PEP (Product Excellence Panel) and “360° +1” design process to get direct feedback/input from our distributors and contractors through every stage of the product development. Rheem makes sure the design meets the needs of our customers (distributors, contractors and homeowners) by meeting our 360˚ Performance, 360˚ Installability, 360˚ Servicability and 360˚ Integration philosophy. Our products must be designed to perform well, install easily, service quickly and communicate better than any other product we’ve developed previously. Contractors have been very pleased with the features and benefits of these furnaces, and we’re seeing solid demand for them in line with our expectations.” — Farooq Mohammad, director, product management, air conditioning division. Trane: “Trane’s top of the line furnace features the industry’s first true communicating fully modulating gas valve and an AFUE of up to 97.3 percent. Thanks to the ComfortLink II technology, the XC95m works with other system components to learn and adapt to your specific home, providing truly optimized, customized comfort and efficiency.” — Jim Lowell, HVAC product manager, Ingersoll Rand. Q: How did your design team go about balancing the need to meet efficiency standards with the need to provide products that are also easy-to-service and install? American Standard & Trane: “Energy efficiency and a product design that is easy for our dealers to service and install are not mutually exclusive concepts. We start with performance requirements, and then ask ourselves how our customers will use and interact with our product, and how can we make that interface easier and more trouble free. If we can’t achieve both, then we haven’t done our American Standard Gold job.” — Jim Lowell, HVAC product manager, Ingersoll Rand. Carrier: “Efficiency regulations are critical, and we are proud of our ability to design and manufacture products that meet contractor requirements for ease of installation while complying with the government’s evolving efficiency standards. “The design team is always focused on making our products easy to install. We recognize the challenges dealers and contractors face in the field, and we work during the design and development phase to help make their jobs as intuitive and streamlined as possible.” — Tom Archer, heating product manager. Geothermal Innovations Increase Mainstream Acceptance We also asked geothermal product manufacturers to provide commentary on new developments: Bosch Thermotechnology: “Because geothermal systems operate more efficiently than ordinary heating and air conditioning systems, annual operating cost are 30% to 60% lower in most cases. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, GSHP can reduce energy consumption and resulting greenhouse gas emissions by up to 44% compared to air sourced heat pumps, and 72% compared to electric resistance heating in standard air conditioning systems.” — Gonçalo Costa, director, product marketing. Geostar: “The integration of advanced vapor-injection technology to our time-tested water-to-water systems has answered contractor requests for higher temperature hydronic systems. The Aston Single Hydronic with OptiHeat is perfect for replacing many applications that would have required a conventional boiler. The compact Aston Single Hydronic with OptiHeat still allows for easy access to all internal components. Our communicating Aurora Controls, with the hand-held Aurora Interface and Diagnostic Tool (AID Tool) allow quick and easy access to unit setup and troubleshooting. Demand continues to be steady as interest in more environmental friendly comfort systems grows.” — Dave Salyer, product manager, WaterFurnace International, Inc. Modine Manufacturing Company: “Geothermal needs to become more mainstream, like conventional residential systems. The performance, comfort and life span of geothermal systems outlast regular systems and it’s important for homeowners to understand that. I believe that educating homeowners about the simple facts of geothermal technology will help to increase awareness of these systems. Explaining that geothermal is a renewable energy source that will help the save up to 50 percent on heating and cooling costs annually, and that those savings will pay back their system cost in about seven years, would a huge help as well.” — Scott Campana, sales manager, geothermal products. WaterFurnace: “The 3 Series feaWaterFurnace 3 Series tures a smaller footprint in response to smaller and smaller mechanical rooms in today’s homes. Additionally, the factory mounted return air flanges allow for easy ductwork connection, and for compatibility with after-market IAQ products. The need for a smaller footprint, yet capable of easily meeting the stringent ENERGY STAR tier 3 ratings were at the heart of the design of the 3 Series. Our communicating Aurora Controls, coupled with the hand-held Aurora Interface and Diagnostic Tool (AID Tool) allow quick and easy access to unit setup and troubleshooting. — Dave Salyer, product manager, WaterFurnace International, Inc. 34 | CONTRACTING BUSINESS.com | SEPTEMBER 2015 0915 Gas Furnace Guide_AMD.indd 34 9/21/15 2:33 PM
