JOIN US, FRIENDS!
At the Y, we believe we have something special—a sense of community—that provides a welcoming place
for everyone. Our members, program participants, volunteers and staff include men, women and children
of all ages and from all walks of life. Here, you’re not a member of a facility; you’re part of a community
and a cause—where you can improve the lives of others while enhancing your own.
The Y is a nonprofit like no other. Join us and belong to a place where:
• Parents find a safe, positive environment for children to learn good values, social skills and behaviors.
• Families come together to have fun and spend quality time with each other.
• Children and teens play, learn who they are and what they can achieve, and are accepted.
• Adults connect with friends, pursue interests and learn how to live healthier.
• Communities thrive because neighbors support each other and give back.
• We all build relationships that further our sense of belonging and purpose.
We are committed to meeting needs and changing lives. Our programs and services will continue to
evolve, but our unwavering willingness and ability to support our community will always be at the core of
the Y. We’re for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
For a better you. For a better community. For a better us.™

FAMILY TIME
Serving families has always been at the heart
of the Y. We have a fundamental desire to
provide opportunities for every family to
build stronger bonds, achieve greater worklife balance, develop new skills and interests,
improve health and well-being, and connect to
the community.
WE’RE OPENING THE Y... TO EVERYONE!
Sunday is meant for family time, and we invite you to spend
it with us! The third Sunday of every month this fall, we will
open our doors to the community—providing an opportunity
to enjoy fun activities, exercise and quality time together.
Explore the Y and enjoy our KidZone, gym, pools and
Wellness Center. You’ll also have an opportunity to
participate in The Great YMCA Hunt, with prizes for those
who complete the challenge.
Registration is not required and there is no fee to attend. All
guests will be required to sign a waiver.

volunteer opportunity is open to individuals, families and
organizations. Sorry, no furry friends allowed.

Y GUIDES AND
Y PRINCESSES
The Y has long been a place where families
come together and create memories. Our
parent/child programs—like Y Guides (dads
and sons) and Y Princesses (dads and
daughters)—promote quality facetime that’s
actually spent face-to-face, not over a phone.
With a menu of activities including camping, a museum
sleepover, a daddy-daughter dance, a hayride, bowling and
Pinewood Derby, you decide what to attend based on your
schedule. The time commitment is flexible, but the unique
bonding you and your child experience is invaluable.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Y has been listening and responding
to our communities’ most critical social
needs for close to 100 years. We know that
when we work as one, we can move people
and communities forward. That’s why we
are committed to providing support to our
neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults
and families to learn, grow and thrive.
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
VOLUNTEER
The Y—and our supporters who make the Scholarship
Program possible—provide much more than a workout
facility for the benefiting individuals and families. We help
provide support and security that impact lives.
Without volunteers, little of what the Y does is possible.
From helping with special events to coaching or mentoring,
your skills and interests can make a difference here.
Volunteering is more than just sharing your time and
passion, it’s about the satisfaction of knowing you’re helping
people become stronger and giving back to your community.
Last year, we were proud to share the Y with more than
300 children, seniors and families who otherwise would not
have been able to become part of our Y family. It is only
with the generous support of our donors and community
partners that we can provide financial scholarships to
individuals and families in our service area in need of
assistance. Scholarships are awarded to those who qualify
based on income, and are limited by the funds available for
disbursement.
Y volunteer roles include preschool reading buddies, special
event volunteers, class instructors (share a talent) and more!
JOIN THE Y SERVICE CLUB
The Y Service Club is part of an international organization
that works to help YMCAs and people reach their fullest
potential. This includes featured presentations, benevolent
programs and fellowship activities. The Club meets the
second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Everyone is
welcome; membership is not a requirement.
SERVE AS A Y AMBASSADOR
We’re looking for individuals, couples and families to
serve as Y Ambassadors—helping welcome our Y’s
newest members and answering their questions.
A one-hour orientation session will be required, as well
as an ongoing commitment of approximately two hours
per month. For additional information or to volunteer,
call 630.547.2005.
CELEBRATE COMMUNITY SERVANTS
AND MILITARY
In recognition of the work and service of firefighters, police,
military and clergy, we provide individuals in this line of work
a 25 percent discount on their monthly fee.
Join us for our Veteran’s Day Celebration—to show appreciation for our members who have served our
country—on November 13 at 2 p.m.!

B.R. RYALL YMCA
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR A VERY
SPECIAL SUMMER CAMP
In June, the B.R. Ryall YMCA hosted 40 children and
teens for the inaugural Billy O’Donnell Basketball
Camp. Founded to honor the memory of its namesake,
a former Y youth basketball coach and local high
school sports star, the camp offered youth entering
grades 3-9 an opportunity to learn the sport, gain
leadership skills and continue to develop important
character traits that align with the Y’s core values:
caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
The full-day weeklong camp was funded in large part
by the O’Donnell family, their friends and loved ones
who made donations to provide scholarships for local
children without financial means.
“Billy loved the Y and absolutely loved coaching the
kids,” shared Brenda O’Donnell, Billy’s mother. “There
is nothing that would make him happier than seeing
the joy on the faces of these children, and helping
them learn and grow.”

SWIM LESSONS
Here at the B.R. Ryall YMCA, we are proud of
our rich history of teaching children to love
water and to swim. Swimming is an important
life skill that all kids should learn at an early
age. Our classes help little ones gain the
confidence and skills necessary to be safe and
have fun in the water—which will later bring a
lifetime of memories and experiences.
Our lessons are structured to promote incremental and
consistent improvement. Each level has been developed for
the specific needs of that age group. Class sizes are small
to allow the maximum amount of student to swim instructor
time—ensuring everyone learns skills appropriate for their
abilities in a safe environment.

DISCOVER
The Discovery Phase encourages beginning to intermediate
swimmers to experience the fun of the sport. Practice
groups are geared toward teaching basic fundamentals, and
instilling focus and pride for accomplishments.
DEVELOPMENTAL GROUPS (must be at least age 6)
WHITE: Aimed at new swimmers, this group is focused on
learning the basics of the four strokes.
BLUE: For youth who can swim all strokes, Blue Group learns
about proper training and finer stroke details. Dryland is
introduced with a focus on foundational movement.
IMAGINE
The Imagination Phase is intended to guide the mind of
intermediate to advanced swimmers toward the future.
They begin to learn and understand goal setting and the
competitive process, helping them advance to the next level.
AGE GROUPS
BRONZE: An introduction to training group, swimmers
will learn to push past comfortable physical and mental
boundaries, and to use advanced mechanics while training.
Dryland is incorporated with recovery and self-awareness.
GOLD: Focused on training and energy system development,
athletes will work on fine tuning of mechanics while setting
short- and long-term goals. Dryland becomes key in training.
PREPARE
The Preparation Phase is about being competitive and
reaching the next level. Athletes’ focus is on what’s
necessary to achieve goals based on current ability.
SENIOR GROUPS
SENIOR: Shifting from skill development to competition
training, aerobic endurance is stressed with suggestions on
what to do outside of practice time.
SENIOR ELITE: This group takes foundational blocks built over
time and uses them to start reaching for the top. Athletes will
be expected to attend every practice. Training varies heavily
based on time of year, goals and body composition. Strength
training becomes key, as does open dialogue about goals and
what is going on within the workouts.

YOUTH SPORTS AND REC
The Y is the starting point for many youth
to learn the importance of being active and
developing healthy habits they will carry with
them throughout their lives. But the benefits
are far greater than just physical. When kids
play sports, they build confidence, discover
their potential, have fun, and learn teamwork
and sportsmanship. Playing virtual games just
can’t compare to the real thing.
YBL - YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE (grades K-4)
Everyone plays; everyone wins. YBL maximizes the positive
effects of athletics by emphasizing healthy competition,
while promoting teamwork and good sportsmanship. Your
child will learn the fundamentals through a weekly evening
practice and game on Saturday morning.
GRADES K-1 520
This league introduces kids to the rules and game of
basketball. With loose refereeing and no score kept, your
child will gain an understanding of the sport and begin to
fall in love with it. Basket height is lowered to 8 feet.
GRADE 2 521
Basket height is set at 8.5 feet, with stricter officiating as
older kids learn the game. This league prepares players for
the next level.
GRADES 3-4 522
With the basket at 9 feet and all rules enforced, this league
is perfect for strengthening fundamentals while still allowing
kids to have fun.

connected to others. That’s why you’ll find a

something to offer everyone, there’s no such
thing as being too old to get in the game.

NO PAIN, BIG GAIN
Muoi Sears of Glen Ellyn is always on her feet, and always moving—
both in her work as a server and in her free time. So when she started
experiencing debilitating pain in her feet three years ago, it was a
potentially life-altering issue. In addition to having arthritis in her knees
and legs, Muoi was diagnosed with planter fasciitis. After injections in
her foot provided no relief, she was told she would need surgery.
Despite the pain Muoi refused to give up her active lifestyle, so she
joined the Y in November 2014 to keep moving. She started running,
and became a regular in Ada’s Cycle, Gilda’s Half and Half, and Suzi’s
Body Pump classes, where she found motivation from her instructors
and fellow Y members. Not only did she quickly lose 10 pounds, she also
eliminated the tremendous pain in her feet and legs through exercise—
and without surgery—which amazed her doctor.
“The pain is completely gone now; I feel so much better and have so
much more energy,” shared Muoi. “The Y is my happy place and I can’t
wait to retire so I can come to the Y even more than I already do!”

BRIGHT BEGINNINGS PRESCHOOL
Children are like sponges: They watch and
absorb knowledge, skills and values from
everyone and everything around them. At the
Y, we believe the values and skills learned
early on are vital building blocks for quality of
life and future success. That’s why our Bright
Beginnings Preschool is staffed with people
who understand the cognitive, physical and
social development of young kids, the need
children have to feel connected and supported
in trying new things, and the caring and
reinforcement parents and families need to
help each other.
Our full-day curriculum is based on a philosophy of learning
through play. Your child will enjoy educational hands-on
activities in art, math, science, music, cooking and phonics.
As the Y is the starting point for many kids to learn the
importance of being physically active, there is dedicated
time on our playground, and in the KidZone, gym and pool.
Breakfast, lunch and two snacks are served daily.
HOURS: Monday - Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
We ask that children arrive no later than 9:30 a.m.
Please call for pricing and availability.
NOTES: Children must turn the required age by September 1.
Children must be toilet-trained for Butterflies and Rockets.
CATERPILLARS: AGE 2 *NEW*
This class is designed to ease parent-separation anxiety and
encourage independence. Your child will have fun learning
songs, stories and finger plays; and playing with Legos,
blocks and puzzles while honing fine and large motor skills.
BUTTERFLIES: AGES 3-4
Through games and group activities, your child will develop
self-awareness and fundamental socialization skills such as
cooperation, listening, sharing and interacting with peers.
Letters, numbers, shapes and colors are introduced.
ROCKETS: AGES 4-5
The goal for this class is to nurture a love of learning and
prepare your child for kindergarten. Weekly theme-based
lessons teach letter recognition and sounds, art, music,
beginning math skills, and mastery of shapes and colors.
