He received his BE, ME and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Tokyo in 1977, 1979 and 1982 respectively. Currently, he is a professor of human interface at Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo. His research interests include enhanced human interface, interactive computer graphics, wearable computer and virtual reality. He has served as a project leader of Virtual Reality project sponsored by The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. Through these projects, he successfully demonstrated sophisticated VR based museum exhibit and contributed to improved quality of VR technology. He was awarded “Tokyo Techno-Forum Gold Medal Award” in 1998, “The Chairman Prize“ from The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications in 2003, “Best Paper Award” from VRSJ in 1999, 2004, 2005, and “Okawa Publication Prize” in 2004. French Research Leader’s Information Dominique Bechmann (http://dpt-info.u-strasbg.fr/~bechmann) is a professor of computer science at the Strasbourg University and a researcher at the LSIIT CNRS Lab since 1996. For 10 years now, she has also been head of the computer graphics research team in Strasbourg, France. From 1986 to 1989, she did her PhD at the IBM scientific centre (Paris, France) on geometric modelling of anatomic organs. In 1990, she did a postdoc at the T.J. Watson research centre (Yorktown Heigths, New York, USA) on deformation models. In 1991, she became an assistant professor and since then she is working on geometric modelling and virtual reality. Starting from 2004, Dominique Bechmann has been leading the ICT France-Asian project on Virtual Reality. This project includes 8 French labs, 7 Korean labs, 6 Japanese labs, 3 Chinese labs, 2 Taiwan labs and 2 Singapore labs. She has been reviewing papers for 3DUI symposium of the IEEE Virtual Reality conference 2007, Edutainment’2006, Eurographics Symposium on Virtual Environments 2004, ACM Solid modeling, The Journal of Visualization and Computer Animation, International Journal of Shape Modeling, The Visual Computer, Computer Graphics Forum, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, Computer & Graphics, Graphical Models. Abstract The goal of this project is to take advantage of the french-japanese relationships that were initiated during the STIC France-Asian project in VR (2004-2006), by concretising the exchanges through collaborations around the improvement of immersion in Virtual Reality environments. We aim at enhancing the behaviour, visualization, and interaction between entities or between the user and the entities evolving in these virtual worlds. At the end, the expected results are an improvement of the realism in immersive environment, in particular of expressiveness, intelligent behaviour of entities, and interactive gestures to communicate intuitively with these entities. The possible outcomes of these works could concern realistic simulators for instance in the military field, or in games, entertainment, and education. Description Virtual Reality (VR) is a scientific and technical domain, making the most of computer science and behavioral interface to simulate the behavior of entities in a virtual world. One of the most important and difficult topics of VR is to obtain the best possible feeling of immersion. To reach this goal, it is necessary to combine a correct representation of the behavior of entities in the 3D scene, an intuitive and natural interaction, and a relevant visualization, all of this in real time. To overcome this scientific challenge, we identified the three following points: - Intelligent behaviour of virtual entities: improvement of the believability of virtual humans by combining together reactive and cognitive behaviors. We would like to explore multilayered approaches allowing to combine reactive path planning and collision avoidance together with cognitive task planning, - Non photorealistic rendering of virtual worlds: non photorealistic rendering (NPR, also mentionned as expressive rendering) is a very promising way to visualize virtual worlds. NPR is based both on very ancient graphical technics (drawing, painting) as well on very recent ones (cartoons), - Interaction with virtual worlds: improvement of the gesture in immersive environment. Among others, by physically constraining the motion of the hand or a hand-held tool thanks to haptic or pseudo-haptic techniques. STIC France-Asian project in VR (2004-2006) initiated collaborations with french and japanese actors in VR, and allowed to discover mutual interest between french and japanese labs around this scientific challenge. The three mentioned topics were found most interesting and meaningful after a series of long communications among members of STIC France-Asian project in VR. We would like to join our forces on a common project on these topics, and we think that an international collaborative JST France-Japan program in VR would be the best way to concretize this project. The proposed research areas take the interests and strengths of all french and japanese groups into account, and the so formed partnership gives the project the best chances to succeed.
