(noor-dubai.com) Venture — Explore — Discover About Our Organization The Lighthouse for the Blind in New Orleans is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has served people who are blind and visually impaired in southeast Louisiana since 1915. The Lighthouse employs 185 people (over 80% of the direct labor is blind or visually impaired individuals), reaches over 10 parishes, provides employment services for individuals with disabilities and is the only organization that provides comprehensive vision rehabilitation services in southeast Louisiana. OUR MISSION The Lighthouse for the Blind serves people in the region who are blind or visually impaired by providing job training, competitive employment and services. OUR GOAL is to promote individual independence and selfreliance. We are COMMITTED to the proactive development of quality products and services. That vision has expanded to include a wide variety of programs and services over the years. While many suffered with the difficult economy in 2009, the Lighthouse saw record sales in its manufacturing division and served more individuals than ever before. William D. Price Dr. Charles G. Glaser This year’s annual report theme is “Venture – Explore – Discover.” This theme extends not only through our programs and services, but also to our manufacturing and production operations. As you read this report, we hope you will gain a better understanding of the difference that the Lighthouse is making in so many lives of the blind and visually impaired in the region. The success we have experienced is due to many: the community and volunteers who supported us through their generous contributions of money and time; our employees who worked diligently to produce high quality materials for our federal government; our staff who ensured that our programs and services grew to reach as many blind and visually impaired individuals and their needs as possible; and our Board of Directors who volunteered hours of their personal time and provided invaluable expertise and guidance. Venture — Explore — Discover Our clients are also to be recognized as an integral part of the growth we have seen. In 2009 the Lighthouse reached over 4,000 blind and visually impaired individuals. Programs and services were expanded to accommodate clients’ expressed needs, increasing their independence and self-reliance. We are proud of what the Lighthouse accomplished in 2009, and we look forward to continued growth in 2010. The Lighthouse vision continues expanding as we venture beyond the boundaries, explore our possibilities and discover the potential. We thank you for your support and appreciate your dedication and interest in the Lighthouse and its mission. Sincerely, Dr. Charles G. Glaser William D. Price Chair, Board of Directors President Venture Legal blindness does not necessarily mean total blindness; 90 percent of people who are legally blind have some remaining vision. Foundation giving missions aligned Ride a bike? Play golf? Search the web? At the Lighthouse people who are blind can learn to do all these things, thanks to grants from the Jerome and Grace Murray Foundation. In 2001 the Lighthouse received an unsolicited gift for technology from the Murray Foundation. The gift grew out of trustee Kathleen Murray Ramsey’s experience with a visually impaired neighbor and a subsequent visit to the Lighthouse. For ten years Mrs. Ramsey, granddaughter of the Foundation’s founders Jerome and Grace Murray, helped a neighbor with macular degeneration. Mrs. Ramsey read her neighbor’s mail to her, helped with household chores, and ran errands for her. In 2001 the neighbor died, and Mrs. Ramsey donated her friend’s visual aids to the Lighthouse to help others with low vision. In this way she became acquainted with Lighthouse programs and services. In 2004 Mrs. Ramsey joined the Board of Directors at the Lighthouse. In the years that followed she directed eight more grants from the Foundation totaling over $80,000 for various programs and services. Murray Foundation gifts have supported technology, children’s programs, recreational activities for seniors, and public relations. Another Murray Foundation grant was given for capital improvements. “I know that my grandparents would be pleased with my involvement with the Lighthouse for the Blind. Supporting services that the Lighthouse offers to the blind and visually impaired is exactly what they had in mind when they created the Murray Foundation.” Community and foundation support helps individuals with vision loss venture beyond the boundaries, explore the possibilities, and discover their potential. The Murray Foundation has expanded horizons and added to the quality of life for many who are blind and visually impaired. It is with deep appreciation that we acknowledge the Murray Foundation’s steadfast support. (Braille Institute) Board of Directors 2009-2010 Dr. Charles Glaser Chairman Ms. Lynne A. Suggs George Villere Explore Employee Spotlight: Patsy Perkins “She is a total professional and a true friend.”…“Dependable, unflustered, funny, and loyal to everyone at the Lighthouse”…. “I was told I was a younger version of Patsy – that was one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received.” Admiring co-workers offered these thoughts about Patsy Hickey Perkins. In 1985 Patsy answered a Lighthouse ad and was hired right away to be the President’s secretary. Except for a nine-month hiatus, she has spent what she describes as thirty-five very happy years at the Lighthouse. Her job title may be Executive Assistant to the President, but her willingness to tackle any job or problem has given her a wide range of duties. First and foremost, Patsy is President Bill Price’s right hand. She manages projects, maintains records, writes reports, coordinates board activities, and makes sure that myriad details are carefully handled. She also has served as the Human Resources Director and currently is assisting the new HR Director, Terri Brown, with benefits, open enrollment, COBRA and EEOC regulations. Whenever there is a special occasion at the Lighthouse she helps with preparations, greets the guests, then stays to clean up. She has painted walls and floors and assisted with landscaping to beautify the facility for events. She fills in during staff breaks at the reception desk and switchboard. Years ago she was thrust into managing the Services Department when the department head became ill and quit abruptly. “I guess I ran Services for a year!” she laughed. The only area she seems not to have had an active role in is manufacturing – but who knows? Asked why she has stayed so long at the Lighthouse Patsy said, “The people I work with share the same compassion. It’s a thread that connects everyone at the Lighthouse. We’re not just a team, we’re more like a family.” Then she added, “Every day is different, so I never get bored.” She is as generous with her financial resources as she is with her time. For years Patsy has donated to the Lighthouse Annual Giving Fund through payroll deductions. Asked why she donates, she seemed surprised by the question. “I wouldn’t have a thing if it wasn’t for the Lighthouse,” she said. “I believe in the Lighthouse, and I want to be a part of making it great. That’s money that I don’t see, so I don’t even think about it.” Patsy doesn’t mention that she gives additional gifts from time to time when her budget allows. Bill Price said, “Integrity, dependability, and wonderful attention to detail – those traits come to mind when I think of Patsy. I joke with her that she’s so organized she makes doctor appointments three years in advance. And I tell her that if she was run over by a truck and asked how she felt she would say, ‘Fine!’ People go to her when they have issues because she is so trustworthy and professional. She is the rock, the stability of the Patsy Perkins organization.” One colleague summed up the shared feeling about Patsy, “Her value is beyond measure.” 2009 Operating Revenue by Source Approximately 138,100 Louisiana residents have vision loss.
