WELCOME
Welcome to the award winning Coca-Cola
Cinemagic International Film & Television Festival
for Young People. 2009 has been a great year for
Cinemagic with lots of exciting new projects and
partnerships. The past year has also witnessed a
significant growth in the Film Club programme to
numerous schools throughout Northern Ireland.
As you can see we have programmed another action packed
festival full of fantastic film screenings including special
premieres, international feature films, documentaries, shorts,
foreign language films and education screenings.
Throughout the festival Cinemagic will be offering young people
the opportunity to take part in practical industry events such as
Cinemagic Stars, the hugely successful Cinemagic Young Film
Maker Competition, the high profile Cinemagic Talent Lab and
our comprehensive Education Programme.
I am delighted to announce that in the lead up to our 20th
Anniversary in 2010, Cinemagic will be delivering events in
Dublin, France, Glasgow, Nottingham, New York and Los Angeles.
In 2010 alone, it is expected that over 35,000 young people will
be involved in Cinemagic events internationally.
Coca-Cola is proud to sponsor the Cinemagic International
Film and Television Festival for Young People once again
this year. The festival provides the opportunity to gain
hands-on experience in many arts based disciplines,
giving a unique insight into the world of film and
television and showcasing the talents of the young people
of Northern Ireland.
We are delighted to support activities for the 12 – 25 age
group such as the exciting range of movie screenings and
the Talent Lab masterclass programme, that provides a
fantastic opportunity for young people to learn and gain
experience from industry experts in a variety of cinematic
and media disciplines.
I would like to congratulate Cinemagic on another action
packed programme and wish everyone participating a
very enjoyable and rewarding festival.
Maire Campbell
Head of Public Affairs & Communications
Coca-Cola HBC Ireland & Northern Ireland
Thank you to all our funders, sponsors and loyal industry
guests who have put their trust in us and remain committed
to providing important opportunities for young people, and a
very special thank you to Coca-Cola who have kindly agreed to
continue their title sponsorship for another 3 years.
I am delighted to take this opportunity to congratulate
Cinemagic for the work that it does and the reputation of
excellence it has established in children’s programmes
over the last eighteen years.
I would also like to thank the Cinemagic Board for their support
and guidance throughout the year and a big thank you to the
hard working staff at Cinemagic for their creativity, enthusiasm
and commitment. And finally to you, the audience, thank you for
supporting and being part of what is now the largest Film and
Television Festival for Young People in the UK and Ireland.
As First Minister of Northern Ireland it is particularly
pleasing that the Cinemagic core festival activities
are held in Belfast. To all those involved over the next
number of weeks I wish you well and trust that this year’s
Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for
Young People will again be another resounding success.
I look forward to seeing you at the festival.

young consultants
Continuing the success of the Cinemagic Young Consultants from previous years let us
introduce you to the class of 2009.
Hi we’re the Young Consultants and we all met up in July
in Queen’s Film Theatre to help Cinemagic choose this
year’s festival films. We did everything from deciding on
programme design, came up with ideas for radio ads, wrote
film reviews and most importantly decided what films
should be selected for the festival.
The films we have selected are all fantastic and we promise
there is something for everyone. From exclusive previews
and family favourites, to films from all over the world we
hope Cinemagic 2009 provides you with as much enjoyment
as we had being young consultants.
See you in November!

jury competition
One of the unique aspects to Cinemagic is that it is one of the few festivals that’s winners are selected by juries made
up solely of young people. The Cinemagic juries will watch all the competition films and select the Best Feature and
Best Short Films of the festival.
So how do you become a member of our young jury?
Well if you have a passion for film and like nothing better than going to the cinema then we would love to hear from
you. Cinemagic is offering you the chance to spend 17 fun-filled days with the festival team helping to decide who the
winners of this year’s festival should be.
All you have to do is write us an imaginative letter or email (300 words max.) telling us why we should choose you to
be a member of the jury. If you are selected you’ll get to watch all the films, meet international directors and celebrity
guests, as well as making lots of new friends. Plus, you’ll get to present the best film awards at Odeon Cinemas on the
awards night.
Award Categories
Best Feature Film for a Children’s Audience
Best Short Film for a Children’s Audience
(as judged by a jury of 10-14 year olds)
Best Feature Film for a Teenage Audience
Best Short Film for a Teenage Audience
(as judged by a jury of 15-18 year olds)
The directors of the winning films will receive £1000
for a feature and £500 for a short.
Rules
You must have permission from your parent/guardian and your school to be a jury member. You will be expected to watch all the films in
competition. You must arrange your own transport to and from the festival. A Cinemagic panel will select the jury. The panel’s decision is final.
Send your letters or emails by Friday 30th October to Jury Competition, Cinemagic, 49 Botanic Avenue, Belfast BT7 1JL or email: claire@

nursery school programme
Cinebabies
Monday 23rd & Tuesday 24th November
Cinemagic and Debutots will be offering Belfast nursery schools
the chance to become involved in the festival experience!
Angelina ‘©2009 HC+KH
Cinemagic plan to turn each participating nursery school into
a mini cinema for the day. Not only will we provide young
children with a fun filled and safe environment to interact but
we will introduce them to the wonder and magic of film and
television. Each nursery will be provided with plasma/projection
screens so the young audience can view the latest preschool
entertainment programmes.
Fireman Sam ‘©2009 Prism
Art&Design Ltd
As well as the special screenings the Debutots team will be
teaching the young children about drama. The early years
drama classes are designed to take the children into an
imaginary world where they can comfortably explore feelings,
words, sounds, movement and develop their relationships
with others. Skilled drama practitioners will guide the children
through each tale creatively, allowing them to imagine their very
own version of the story as they all become the sights, sounds
and characters.
The Cinebabies team will be visiting nursery schools in Belfast
on Monday 23rd & Tuesday 24th November.
PLEASE NOTE: Cinebabies visiting times can be arranged to suit
the individual nursery school.
MORE INFORMATION?
If you would like the festival team to visit your nursery school please contact

The Art of Shadow Play with Frank Quinn
Shadow play or shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment
using opaque, often articulated figures in front of an illuminated backdrop to create
the illusion of moving images. It is popular in various cultures across the globe. At
present, more than 20 countries are known to have shadow show troupes.

Weaving elements of historical fact with the personal quest
of young Brendan, this breathtaking film is a fantastic
blend of humour, adventure and artistry. Brendan is
educated by his uncle, Abbot Cellach, who holds a firm grip
on his nephew and expects him to follow in his footsteps.
However, Brendan decides to break free in search of his
dream: completing the valuable Book of Kells.
We are delighted to welcome writer and director Tomm
Moore to the festival. Tomm will participate in a special
Q&A with the audience after the screening.

Every movie that gets
released in the UK has
to go through one final process before it hits the cinemas
- classification. It’s the job of the British Board of Film
Classification (BBFC) to view them all and decide on a suitable
classification or rating: U, PG, 12A or higher. What a job! Here’s
a great opportunity for youngsters to get the lowdown on how
it’s all done and meet some of the people who do the job for
real. This workshop will feature plenty of interactivity and film
clips as well as providing young people with the opportunity to
ask their own questions about the BBFC’s work. Teachers will
be provided with follow-up worksheets that link to the BBFC’s
Children’s website, cbbfc.co.uk.

Story Shorts
This entertaining and interactive session is an introduction
to studying film for Key Stage 2 pupils. Children view short
films taken from the BFI’s Story Shorts resources within
a framework which can be applied to all moving image texts, and
which encourages them to become more active viewers. They will explore
key themes such as story, sound and character and be introduced to the
important moving image concepts of camera and sound and how these
contribute to the meaning of a film. The session is an ideal springboard for
literacy activities based on the Story Shorts resources and is a fantastic

At 10.00am on Saturday morning they received their instructions and had 2
days to write, shoot, edit and deliver a completed film. On Monday morning,
70 films had been completed! The top 5 films from the challenge have since
been seen at several film festivals and broadcast on the

Cinemagic, Queen’s Film Theatre and Film Education present Little
Moscow a School’s Out Screening.
A smoothly produced period melodrama unfolding in the southwestern
Polish city of Legnica, headquarters to the Soviet forces stationed in
Poland from 1945-90, Little Moscow traces the politically dangerous
love affair between Vera the beautiful wife of a Russian military
pilot, and Michal a dashing Polish lieutenant. Delving into a period of
Eastern bloc history not previously exploited by popular cinema Little
Moscow paints an affecting portrait of the tension-filled Soviet-Polish

Castres International Short Film Festival Presents
A Film Competition for Schools
Cinemagic and Castres Short Film Festival have been working in partnership throughout 2009. In April we
attended the Castres Festival in the south of France to present to local schools a compilation of international
short films that had screened at Cinemagic events throughout 2008. The young people watched and reviewed the
selection before voting for their favourite film!
Florence Panis director of the Castres Short Film Festival has selected a number of fantastic short films that she has screened in
France over the last year and put together a programme for the young people of Northern Ireland. This is a great opportunity to
view, discuss and debate an international short film programme before selecting your winner!

roald dahl - A Celebration
James and the Giant Peach
After James's parents are killed by a rogue rhinoceros, he is forced to live
with his nasty aunts far from any kind of fun. But when a gigantic peach
begins growing in his back yard and James befriends the large insects who
live inside, he sees a way to escape from his wicked aunts to New York City.
James and the Giant Peach is a magical musical adventure based on the
classic children's book by Roald Dahl, featuring an all-star cast as the voices of
the assorted insects. Enjoy -- it's a peach of a journey!

It's the near future and androids are in common usage.
One day Rikuo, who has taken robots for granted all his life,
discovers that Sammy, his home android, has been acting

strange phrase recorded in her activity log, "Are you enjoying

rule is to not discriminate between humans and androids.
Within the cafe androids do not display their status rings,
and, when patrons depart, the door is automatically locked
for two minutes to prevent anyone from following them to
discover their true nature. There are plenty of references to

Although most of us seem to be living the lives of eternal adolescents it is a lifestyle
choice of our own and not one forced upon us like the Kildren in this film. Set in an
alternate history where the world is at peace, but in order to ease the tension of
those accustomed to war and aggression, private corporations contract fighter
pilots to stage combat operations against each other for show. The Kildren are
genetically designed humanoids who have the blessing/curse of eternal youth
but are also conscious that every day could be the last, because they have to
take part in the staged battles. Rather than being typical maudlin teenagers,
they embrace the reality of their situation and live their day-to-day lives to the

Schools Programme
The Cinemagic Young Jury
As part of Cinemagic Dublin we will be
programming a short film competition that will
see a young jury reviewing and critiquing new
films from all over the world.
Cross Border Film Camp
Cinemagic will offer a group of young people from the North and
South of Ireland the opportunity to take part in an intensive film
camp residential course. The young people involved will produce
a short film under the guidance of industry professionals.
Education Workshops
Education events will see practical hands-on
workshops for schools with the Evening Herald,
Today FM and Filmbase. Cinemagic will also
be partnering up with Cinemobile – Ireland’s
Traveling Cinema – to bring the magic of movies
to schools throughout Dublin.

where are they now?
A number of young people who have participated in Cinemagic activities have gone
onto further their skills base and achieve great success by gaining employment in
the film & television industry. Here are a number of the success stories…
Michael Lennox
Michael won the Cinemagic Pitch Idol competition in 2004.
He also competed in Cinemagic Young Filmmaker in 2005.
Over the last 4 years Michael has participated in the UK wide
initiative Make your Mark in Film and has directed two short
films supported by the UK Film Council and Northern Ireland
Screen. His 2008 Deviate film Rip and The Preacher was
screened at LA Shortsfest , Aspen Shortsfest, Cinequest Film
Festival and Dallas International Film Festival. In January 2010
Michael will attend the National Film and Television School in
London.
Paul Gilmore

in 2005 while studying at university. Paul now works for
BBC Northern Ireland as a Sports Commentator and News

and direct an online episode of the hit show Skins. Darren has
since worked on season four of the award winning television
series.
Sammy Nutt
Sammy first got involved with Cinemagic through the
Young Filmmaker Competition and Filmmaking Production
workshops in 2004. He was awarded the most promising

messages of support
Cinemagic provides a rare opportunity for young people to learn about the reality of a life in the Arts. Many come from
homes where a career in films or theatre might seem a million miles away from reality, but Cinemagic bridges that gap with
the chance to meet directors, actors, writers, musicians, who can help them to find the right way forward. In other words,
these boys and girls can break the glass wall that seems to separate them from their own ambitions. That they come from
both sides of the border and from different religious and economic backgrounds only adds to my enthusiasm. Well done,
Cinemagic.
Julian Fellowes
I am really honored to be a patron of Cinemagic. I believe that cinema is the central artistic medium of our time and a child's
vivid imagination can flourish with the enchanting power of film. Great movies can encourage kids to connect with both their
own creativity and a whole world of artistic possibility.
Seamus McGarvey
We have long had an interest in Cinemagic because of the significant contribution it has made to the lives of young people in
Ireland who wish to be involved in the film business. Their workshops and classes and training events for children of all ages
and young adults know no borders or creeds or racial or economic prejudices. All are welcome and treated with respect. We
are very proud to be patrons of this organisation.
Ros and John Hubbard
I have been involved with Cinemagic for several years. Both the commitment of the staff and the participants makes me
proud to be patron. Cinemagic stands for allowing young people access to the world of Film and Television irrespective of
their background. It is worthwhile and a great way to foster talent at the grass roots of the industry.
Dermot O’Leary
When in Belfast I am always struck with the commitment and passion of Northern Ireland’s young people. The humour and
talent of these children impresses me immensely. This year promises to be a fantastic festival, all the team and the many
volunteers will no doubt again bring unique and exciting opportunities to the young people of Northern Ireland.
