‘I have been immensely lucky
in that my professional work has
taken me to all corners of the world
where I have been able to see first
hand some of the rarest and most
spectacular wildlife on earth.
But the fate of these creatures which
share our planet lies entirely at the
hands of mankind – it is within our
power to protect them or watch
them become extinct. Let us
choose the first route.’
Sir David Attenborough
— patron of the
World Land Trust
‘Gemfields is very pleased to bring
Emeralds for Elephants to India
this year. Our London auction for
the ‘Indian Elephant Corridor’ project
helped to raise a significant amount
last year, and we are sure of a good
response in India. Gemfields is
proud to have partners who support
us wholeheartedly on this initiative
and we sincerely hope that our
efforts in giving to the environment
will help build larger and more
viable habitats.’
Ian Harebottle
— CEO of Gemfields
‘I am delighted to be a part of this unique and very
special collaboration between the two apparently
disparate worlds of conservation and jewellery.
The Elephant is an integral part of Indian culture
and heritage and it is an inspiration to see the
World Land Trust and Wildlife Trust of India
working tirelessly to protect the environment and
the magnificent animals that depend on it.
‘Emeralds for Elephants’ demonstrates that everyone
has something to give and I believe that we all need
to give something back to the natural world we share
with these animals. If we do not take these steps
now, what world will our children have to enjoy and
what example will they have to follow? We, as Indians,
have always prayed to the Elephant; I now pray to
the people in the hope that they may play their part
in securing the future of the Elephant and the precious
abundance of wildlife our country is home to.’

John A. Burton CEO
of the World Land Trust
World Land Trust (WLT) is an international conservation charity raising funds to purchase and
protect critically endangered habitats around the world and ultimately, the animals which inhabit
them. For 22 years, WLT has been working to protect some of the world’s most endangered places
and is marking 2011 with events designed to focus specifically on projects in urgent need of our help
and attention. WLT has worked with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) in establishing and securing
Elephant corridors in India, and we are delighted to bring a very exciting project to India,
in continuation of this work.
‘Emeralds for Elephants, India’ is a dynamic and exciting exhibition designed to create awareness and
raise important funds for the protection of the critically endangered Asian Elephant. Asian Elephant
habitats are becoming increasingly fragmented with the expansion of India’s cities and agriculture
but by working with the Wildlife Trust of India, land has been identified which can reconnect the
isolated pockets of forest habitats. By funding this land purchase and allowing the elephants to
follow their traditional migration routes, we will create wildlife corridors that will protect not just
elephants but a huge range of other wildlife, too. A ‘corridor’ is an area of land that links existing
protected areas, enabling animals to move safely over larger areas and larger habitats, which results
in more species living safely. To provide a conflict-free passage for Elephants, WTI works closely
with the government and communities living in the corridors by providing people with alternate
land, houses and basic civic amenities. By creating Elephant corridors and engaging communities
in voluntary relocation initiatives, it will be possible to reduce human/Elephant conflict, which
can often result in the deaths of both villagers and Elephants, so that both Elephants and humans
have safe havens and larger, more viable habitats are created. It has been calculated that to fund the
purchase of every identified wildlife corridor and therefore safeguard the Asian Elephant forever
would cost approximately £10 million. Although significant, this is achievable and we hope this
beautiful collection helps us take a giant step towards our target. With an estimated 20,000 Asian
elephants surviving it works out at just £500 to save each Elephant.
We are proud and honoured that ethical Zambian emerald company, Gemfields, has worked with
us to recruit 10 of India’s most talented jewellery designers to create a 10-piece collection that will
be sold at a Grand Auction in Mumbai, in October 2011. WLT are delighted to bring the ‘Emeralds
for Elephants’ exhibition to India, following the success of WLT’s collaboration with Gemfields
on ‘Emeralds for Elephants’ in London in 2010. We look forward to repeating and exceeding this
success in India, this year.
This exhibition demonstrates that whatever your talent or gift in life, everyone can do something to
help the world’s most endangered places and the iconic animals that rely upon them.
Thank you for your generous support.

Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces
Taj Hotels Resorts & Palaces, one of the Asia’s largest and the most admired group of hotels, is
immensely concerned about responsible tourism. To embrace wildlife in India, Taj Safaris - India’s
first luxury wildlife circuit in Madhya Pradesh - has come a long way in collaboration with & Beyond.
Taj Safaris, a TATA initiative, is known to provide its guests with an exquisite, interpretive wildlife
experience based on a proven and sustainable eco-tourism model and Beyond’s collaboration with
Taj Hotels has to its credit, decades of expertise in providing exciting wildlife experiences with a
host of renowned services blended in tranquil hospitality.
Mahua Kothi, the first lodge of its kind was born on the 1st of November, 2006, and paved way for
three more lodges, the latest being Banjaar Tola in February, 2009, completing the Tiger Circuit.
For our guests at Taj Safari, luxury does not come at the cost of environment. Tucked away in the
outskirts of the national parks of Madhya Pradesh viz. Bandhavgarh, Pench, Panna and Kanha,
Taj Safari lodges namely Mahua Kothi, Baghvan, Pashan Garh and Banjaar Tola are sensitively
plugged-in to their surroundings, making use of locally available sustainable resources. Each of
the lodges have their own unique set of characteristics, which defines them.
Mahua kothi features twelve brand new lodges called Kutiyas. Each charming suite is filled with
quaint local touches. Baghvan is located by a stream, on the edge of the sprawling Pench National
Park with spacious rustic standalone suites. Pashan Garh has a cluster of stone cottages, atop a
small hill, offering magnificent views. The Banjar Tola lodge epitomizes eco-friendly design and
community participation in planning.
Reinforcing the signature value system behind almost every venture undertaken by the TATA group,
Taj Safari carries out a host of other conservation initiatives. Like the first ever translocation of gaur
to an area where they were extinct. Taj Safari works closely with the local communities and educates
them about the importance of conserving the jungle for future generations. During the process, it
supports their livelihoods through a number of developmental initiatives. Taj Safari lodges are open
till 30th June 2011 and again from 16th October 2011, with the exception of Pashan Garh which
opens on 16th September and Baghvan Pench which reopens on 1st October, 2011. Itineraries can
be appended with a visit to the majestic Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad, the exquisite Nadesar Palace
in Varanasi or the Taj Royal Palaces in Jodhpur, Jaipur and Udaipur, to name but a few.
In continuation of the Taj Safaris philosophy and in support of such initiatives, we are pleased to
partner with Emeralds for Elephants which shares our concern for the environment and ways to
give back to it.

GIA is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to protect all consumers of gemstones by
providing them with the accurate information about the gems they purchase through education and
laboratory services. This mission is backed by a significant investment in gemmological research to
ensure the latest findings are translated into our training programmes and grading techniques.
Established in 1931, GIA was founded by the visionary and former retail jeweller Robert M. Shipley,
who dreamt of professionalizing the industry and protecting all buyers and sellers of gemstones
through education, research, and gemmological instrumentation. GIA is the global leader in
gemmological grading – be it diamonds, coloured stones or pearls. Using sophisticated technology,
GIA researchers analyse thousands of samples each year. GIA is often the first to detect any new
synthetic gems and gem enhancement processes that enter the marketplace.
Considered the world’s most respected gemmological laboratory, GIA is often entrusted with grading
and identifying more gems than any other lab including famous stones and coloured diamonds like
the Hope, the Taylor-Burton, the De Beers Millennium Star, and the Incomparable. GIA’s clients
include elite auction houses such as Christies and Sotheby’s, gem and jewellery manufacturers and
retailers from around the world. Being the creator of international grading standards such as 4Cs of
diamond quality (Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat weight) and 7 Pearl Value Factors (Pearl Size, Shape,
Colour, Nacre, Luster, Surface, and Matching), GIA sets the standards worldwide.
Ms. Nirupa Bhatt, Managing Director, GIA India & Middle East says, ‘Elephants have been an
integral part of the Indian culture. And over the years, these gentle giants have inspired jewellers
across the world. Lately, we have been increasingly reading about their habitats being affected
by deforestation and human encroachment. Conservation in such a scenario is of paramount
importance. We at GIA are pleased to lend our support to the worthy cause ‘Emeralds for Elephants’
– a project to protect these beautiful animals.’

From New York to London, Geneva to Hong Kong, Sotheby’s international jewellery auctions
totalled more than US$400 million in 2010. In autumn 2010, Sotheby’s held record – breaking
jewellery sales in each of the major salerooms. Following Sotheby’s Geneva world record auctions
in November 2010 and May 2011, Sotheby’s Geneva forthcoming sale of Magnificent Jewels will be
held at the Hôtel Beau-Rivage on Tuesday 15 November 2011 and will comprise an impressive array
of white diamonds and coloured gemstones, in addition to jewels with important provenance,
period jewels and creations signed by the world’s greatest jewellers. The quality and variety of the
jewels presented for sale will, without doubt, appeal to collectors and jewellery connoisseurs from
all corners of the globe.

Commenting on Sotheby’s involvement, Auctioneer for ‘Emeralds for Elephants’, Lord Poltimore,
Deputy Chairman Sotheby’s Europe, said: “Sotheby’s is delighted to be supporting ‘Emeralds for
Elephants’ charity auction in Mumbai this coming October, which will generate much-needed funds
for the protection of the Asian Elephant. The combination of jewellers and gemstones has resulted
in some truly magnificent jewellery pieces of outstanding workmanship, inspired by the very cause
they will be sold to benefit. We very much look forward to playing a modest role in raising funds for

Abaran, Bangalore
“Elephants are one of the most majestic creatures in the world. Being large, powerful, intelligent, useful, and longlived they have therefore become symbols of strength, wisdom, happiness, and endurance. Indians believe elephants to
be lucky creatures. Placed on shelves or by doorways they endure luck and longevity. Some people believe that stroking
the trunk of a household elephant statue ensures success in business or on a journey. They are religious symbols in the
Hindu faith. In fact, the birth of Buddha was announced by a white elephant, and Ganesha is an elephant-headed
god of wisdom and path-clearing.
Elephants have been an inspiration in jewellery designs for eons especially in India where elephants are featured
in legends and are very much part of the culture and heritage. My design inspired by the elephant consists of an
exquisitely designed pendant and a chandelier earpiece to match. Combining the elephant’s magical prowess and
the shine of high quality emeralds and diamonds, these pieces are sure to bring the wearer not only luck but also
a lot of compliments.”
Established in 1935, Abaran is still synonymous with timeless jewellery. The Abaran flagship
store in Bangalore represents the exquisite beauty of its jewellery. Spread over 20,000sq ft, in the
heart of the city, the Abaran store is the epitome of exclusive design and heartfelt customer care.
Dedicated floors and sections feature different kinds of jewellery: ‘Silver Section’ displays silver
merchandise, ‘Diamond Floor’ sparkles with exclusively designed diamond and platinum jewellery,
‘Grand Kohinoor Room’ is designed for clients who like a bespoke service. There is also a design

“Elephants are very close to my heart, and have been since I was a child. This is mainly because they are hugely
important and cherished in Jaipur; you will spot them as a talisman (mostly in the form of the Hindu god Ganesh)
round many a Jaipuri’s neck, but also because they are such elegant creatures despite their size. In fact, it was during
the ‘Jaipur Elephant Festival’ that I was inspired to design the earrings that I have contributed. As I was watching
the graceful parade of elephants I thought how beautiful it would look to have an elephant elegantly hanging from a
woman’s ears, intricately decorated as the real life elephants are in India.”
Sanjay Kasliwal inherited the love and passion for jewellery from his father. Since his childhood he
has been exposed to the splendour of jewels, craftsmanship and design. The Gem Palace archives
are a constant source of inspiration, however Sanjay blends these traditional Indian designs made
for the Maharajas with those of other cultures to create timeless pieces of art. The Kasliwal family
were invited to Jaipur in 1728 by Maharaja Jai Singh when he was building his new city, Jaipur, which
he wanted to become a centre of excellence. The Kasliwals were appointed as the Crown Jewellers.
In 1852 when the Maharaja was expanding the city the Kasliwals moved to a piece of land outside
the old city walls and established The Gem Palace on the site where it remains to the present day.
Eight generations later they are still producing much of the finest work in India for royalty such as;
The Queen of Holland and the HRH Prince and the late Princess of Wales, Charles and Diana, and
international celebrities such as; Jackie Onassis and Gwyneth Paltrow. The Gem Palace has stone
cutting and manufacturing workshops within their majestic haveli in Jaipur, to ensure the finest
craftsmanship is achieved, helped enormously by the fact that the majority of their artisans are at
least third generation. The Gem Palace is one of those rare organisations involved in every field of
jewellery manufacturing, right from the cutting of stones to the designing and making of finished
fine jewellery. The Gem Palace has exhibited at several prestigious institutions; including The New

“Elephants are known for their superior intelligence and structured social order. Female elephants while maintaining
close bonds among themselves interact well with other herds, families, and clans. The unique bangle is designed
and inspired by the bonding of female elephants in the forest. The closeness of the design highlights the elephant
community moving in very close knit groups. Their size is in direct contrast to the gentle quietness they have and their
commitment towards family life and bonding.
The three finger ring is inspired by ‘Elephant Riding’, a tradition dating back to the ancient times of rajas and
maharajas. The design takes inspiration from the days of royalty when riding an elephant was a sign of position,
power and greatness. The trunk, an elephant’s most important and versatile appendage, is sensitive enough to pick up
a single blade of grass, yet strong enough to rip the branches off a tree. The beautiful ring is inspired by the strength
of the largest mammal on earth today ‘The Elephant’.”
Narayan Jewellers creation dates back to 1940 when Chokshi Ambalalbhai Chaturbhai laid its
foundation by opening a small shop in the heart of the old walled Vadodara city, the cultural centre
of Gujarat. In 1986 and 1997 two more jewellery houses were opened in Alkapuri and Vadodara,

embodiment of its founder’s lifelong pursuit to create one-of-a-kind jewels, which combine
diamonds and precious stones and the highest level of aestheticism, innovation and craftsmanship.
Nirav Modi pieces have been sold at both Christie’s & Sotheby’s auction houses. In November 2010,
with his exquisite Golconda Lotus Necklace, Nirav became the first Indian to have a piece featured
on the cover of Christie’s auction catalog.
The Nirav Modi salon is the sole partner in India to showcase exquisite jewelry featuring Rio Tinto’s
Argyle Pink Diamonds, which are among the rarest stones known to mankind. It is also the only
place you will be able to see The Ainra CutTM, designed to create diamond links that replace the
metal clasps traditionally used in jewelry and The Endless CutTM, which brings you an unbroken line
of diamonds, an enigmatic circle of light, where each diamond flows into the next effortlessly.
Adorned with the rarest of the gems from all corners of the world, embellished with breathtaking
motifs and innovative cuts, each Nirav Modi creation qualifies as a singular piece never to be
replicated again – a priceless heirloom to be passed on for generations.

“Elephants are a symbol of wisdom in Asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intelligence. Aristotle once
said the elephant was ‘the beast which passeth all others in wit and mind’, and today they are on the verge of extinction.
We have worked on a lot of themes like wedding, solar eclipse, durga puja and sea shore; all these were creations and
this time we decided to challenge ourselves with the opposite. We wanted to show destruction and the various ways
it was happening.”

“The haunting beauty of the forest, the fleet footed flights of its regal denizens, the never- ending revelations of
surpassing grandeur and luminance in the littlest particle of the flora and fauna and the lushness of the splendour
– this is the jungle at its best. These jewels have been hewn from two of the most precious substances known to
mankind – Zambian emeralds and diamonds. Crafted from a sense of deep humility and reverence for the power of
nature at its bountiful best, inspired by the green effusion of the deepest rainforests, these earrings are a tribute to
Mother Earth’s bounty – the flora and fauna which surrounds us but is fast disappearing… The fabulous beauty of
the flawless Zambian emeralds pays tribute to the green splendour of the forests. The floral design is classic, regal and
opulent – all at once, as befits a jewelled masterpiece which is heirloom worthy in the truest sense.”
Talwarsons Jewellers is now recognised as leading the way in jewellery in Chandigarh. It has brought
the art of jewellery crafting from a heritage to a global grandeur creating not just designs but
masterpieces made for a lifetime. Talwarsons Jewellers history goes back at least 8 generations.
The Talwar family is probably the oldest jeweller family of north India. The first family run
jewellery store was inaugurated in April 1954. In 1993, Sh Sat Pal Talwar and Anil Talwar
transited from Talwar group and took sole ownership over Talwar Diamonds and later renamed
it Talwarsons Jewellers.
By the beginning of the 21st century, Anil Talwar decided to solely concentrate on retail sales,
catering to the needs of Indian discerning customers. Being a strong supporter of traditional and
heritage craftsmanship, Anil Talwar travels extensively in the country and sources masterpieces from
master craftsmen and designers from various regions to maintain the authenticity of each piece.
To achieve this he makes sure that the only original masterpieces are created by craftsmen from the
same region of this country and not a replica created by local vendor. Talwarsons Jewellers was one
of the pioneers in this part of the country getting the BIS certification and 916 hallmarking for all
gold jewellery sold from his store. Anil Talwar is one of the founder members of All India Gems
and Jewellery Trade Federation.

Arzan Khambatta, Mumbai
“The Ganesha is definitely the most popular form in India. Its sheer shape allows for experimentation and thus
I have given it a contemporary form. Besides it being the most sought after deity in our religious environment,
it has universal appeal and is worshipped by one and all, irrespective of their caste. The appearance of the Ganesha
is that of abundance. Somehow your troubles, your daily tensions seem to fade away in front of its imposing form.
The Ganesha is said to give us all we ask for. The Zambian emerald jewel in its hand denotes that. The emerald
jewel is the silent wish of the observer, it is the gift that Ganesha has to give the beholder, it is the sheer life force
that he holds in his hand, and readily is willing to hand it over to the one who asks for it. It is power, it is wealth,
it is health.”
Arzan Khambatta is an architect by profession and a sculptor by choice. Encouraged by his parents,
he started sculpting at a young age. He would scout the streets, garages, construction sites for scrap
metal and weld them into pieces of art he fondly christened ‘Scraptures’. What started off purely as a
hobby, slowly became a way of life, when his first buyer, the architect Dara Mistry bought a piece in
1983. Arzan then had a solo exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery in 1993.
Arzan’s comissions include the ‘Moghul’ outside the jewel of India at the Nehru Centre
commissioned by Noshir Talati in 1989, the ‘Dolphins’ at Worli and the ‘Ceat Rhino’ at Nariman
Point. Khambatta’s works are collected by leading collectors and can be found in a number of high
profile houses, hotels, and private collections around the world. Arzan has had an extraordinary 10
solo shows and over 50 group shows worldwide.
