years
ago,
while
working with the

Heron streets, I Greater GH, Inc.
learned a valuable
lesson from the local director of
WSDOT about the economy in Grays
Harbor.
The lesson was: “if you want a quick
check on the economy in Grays Harbor, count the number of log trucks
and dump trucks on the road each
day.” Being in the retail business, I had
never thought of the economy in those
terms. As it turns out, that lesson holds
true.
What it really means is the economy
in the Harbor is dependent on the success of industry. When you see log
trucks, that means jobs in the timber
industry, lumber, log export, and construction are rolling.
When you see dump trucks, that
means construction, road and bridge
projects, and development are in process. Add to that the success of the Port
with import and export projects, and all
The Leadership
Grays Harbor Class
of 2013 helped the
Children’s Advocacy Center cut the
ribbon on the new
play shelter at the
center, which is a
daycare and serves
children who have
been victims of
abuse.
The LGH class
raised about
$22,000 and secured
volunteer labor to
build the shelter,
which will allow
children who use the center to play outside, and a fence around it.
“We have used it every day,” CAC
Director Angela Coulter said.

EXPO and Bite 2014 a success again
Another March, another
successful EXPO Grays
Harbor and Bite of
Grays Harbor.
With 68 businesses and
organizations in Sam
Benn Gym and another
four downstairs in the
Bite, there was a lot of
excitement in the air.
As the Harbor’s only
locally-produced trade
show that aims to connect local businesses with
local customers, the
EXPO gave the many,
many attendees a chance
to get to know the local
business community
better.
GGHI is always looking

Doris Reed finds business, balance in acupuncture
By Callie White
Communications
Greater GH, Inc.
When Doris Reed settled into the
Harbor, so her family would be closer
to the surfing at Westport, she was in a
common position for many Harborites.
She had trained as a typesetter in Seattle
and found that there just weren’t jobs
for her skills with the rise of desktop
publishing, and now, in the midst of her
mid-life, when she looked for a different job, most were part-time, or otherwise unworkable.
“I couldn’t find anything that fit,”
Reed said.
So she decided to create her own job.
It didn’t happen overnight, but it did
start at Grays Harbor College. There
she thought she might become an XRay tech, because it was the kind of job
where she could help people, and influence their health. But after an acupuncture experience with Dr. Fran May, she
knew she had found something she
could do for the rest of her life.
“I’ve always been interested in helping other people, and the things we do
to bring us back to nature,” Reed said.
Acupuncture was all about healing, and
coming into balance, and it appealed
deeply to Reed, who transferred to
Bastyr University in Seattle to finish her
Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental
Medicine.
Bastyr had a required class on ethics
and practice management, which talked
about marketing and establishing a
practice. This helped Doris form a business plan. Once she finished school,
Erik Stewart at the Small Business Development Center really helped her pull
together some of the vital pieces of her
business. She started her business both
in Westport and partnering with Soul
Picnic and later with Kathryn Hughes at
Southshore Massage. By 2010, she
struck out on her own.
She moved to State Street – a central
location with plenty of parking and a
quieter building.
Since 2009 Reed has been building
her practice, which mostly serves clients
who deal with pain, which, coincidentally, is what insurance reimburses for
acupuncture treatments. Reed said as of
January 2014 Washington state law requires acupuncture coverage (a minimum of 12 visits per year), which is a
big deal for a small, rural practice like
hers, which doesn't draw the quantity of
clientele found at a boutique practice in
an urban setting such as Olympia or
Doris Reed
Tacoma.
For those with more limited means,
Reed hosts “community acupuncture”
days from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. every
second Saturday of the month. Anyone
can drop into her office and get basic
acupuncture – needles in the ears, generally – for $10.
For those who deal with chronic issues, Reed has invested in special equipment that she uses to provide rapid
relief -- an AcuGraph® which helps
diagnose a patient with only the feeling
of the pressure of a wet cotton swab,
and the Acutron® which uses microcurrent and colored light at points on
the body to speed healing or even do
aesthetic work – lifting and toning the
face reducing wrinkles and improving
skin tone.
To build success, Reed not only
opens her practice up for community
acupuncture, she does talks anywhere,
has taken part in health fairs and other
events, and goes to every Business Forum she can.
“It’s just so cool, the things you can
learn there,” Reed said.
While Reed has, like every other busiCont. on Page 7

New ChamberMaster developments

together, it means jobs for our local
economy and customers for our retail
businesses.
As our economy continues to grow,
it is an important reminder of what
happens when you Shop The Harbor
First. Your tax dollars stay in your local
community to help support your local
government, law enforcement, fire departments and much more.
What is exciting for me is GGHI has
moved forward to make our Shop The
Harbor First campaign year-round,
rather than just during the holiday and
Christmas shopping season.
Starting in April, with both of our
local radio groups, you will hear the
driving reasons and the importance of
what happens when you Shop The
Harbor First. This will be followed by
changes currently being developed for
our website.
Speaking of our website, as we move
into spring with longer daylight hours
and warmer weather, it’s always a good
time to review how you are marketing
your business, especially if you have a
limited budget to work with.
On our website, make sure your
members listing is up to date with current information and stay tuned for
upcoming changes to ChamberMaster
that will offer you a more diverse selection of services to help you promote
your business, products, and services.
As you chart your course for 2014 for
your business, make sure you take the
time to tie in what you plan to do with
what’s happening in your community
with planned events. A quick way to
find that information is to go to
www.graysharbor.org, click on the
“Live” tab at the top of the page and
then “calendar of events” on the left.
Once you get to the events page,
clicking on “full view” will show everything in detail. This can also help you
see important business to business potential.
Remember, anyone can submit events
— there is a “Submit your event” button right on the page!

AHS gets educational grant
from GGHI for Biz Week
Greater Grays Harbor, Inc. is
pleased to announce that the board has
elected to grant $2,500 to Aberdeen
High School’s In-School Business
Week.
The money comes from GGHI’s
Educational Fund, and will mean approximately 220 high school juniors
will be able to participate in their annual In-School Business Week in April.
There, juniors form teams, called
“companies,” that develop a product,
develop marketing and production
plans, and then search for “investors”
– adults from the local business community – at a culminating trade show.
Their companies have local business
people as advisors, so it is a rare opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of capitalism from experienced
professionals.
Along the way, students get lessons
in personal finance and budgeting, how
to behave in the workplace, appropriate office dress, and teamwork.
“Business Week has been a part of
our organization for a long time, but
we asked them to apply like any other
program,” said CEO Tim Gibbs. “We
have seen the value of this program,
and we have heard from past participants how it has sharpened their focus
and ambition for when they leave the
world of academia behind for a job.”
The Educational Fund was established to promote opportunities for
local schools to have students to experience business, career and vocational education.

Mother/daughter members join GGHI board
By Callie White

Greater GH, Inc.
Cindy DeBard, owner of Harbor
Shoes in Aberdeen, and Georgia Bravos, Senior Marketing Representative
for Jodesha Broadcasting, have been
appointed to the board of Greater
Grays Harbor, Inc.
Bravos will serve a one-year term and
DeBard will serve a two-year term.
DeBard, who has been a member of
the Aberdeen Downtown Parking and
Regulations Committee, said she was
interested in representing the small
business owners in the membership,
and in education about the Shop the
Harbor First message.
“I believe as a small business owner I
bring to the board a perspective that is
very much needed,” DeBard wrote in her application.
Bravos is a longtime
ambassador with GGHI
and has served as co-chair
for the past two years.
She has also been involved in multiple nonprofit organizations, went
through Leadership Grays
Harbor last year, and is
currently on the LGH
steering committee.

she has plans to expand into an adjacent

“I like the Harbor, I like that you can
