Exempla Saint Joseph Heritage Project
Large scale prefabrication leads to significant schedule and cost savings
At ESJH, prefabrication strategies shaved GJWFNPOUIT off a
more traditional linear-based construction delivery. The
solutions include 44 bathroom pods. At a warehouse
within five miles of the project site, 25-foot above-theceiling multi-trade racks are being assembled ahead of a
typical onsite installation.
44 patient bathrooms were prefabricated down to the shower curtain.
Other prefab elements include head walls and exterior
panels. The benefits from concurrent prefab construction,
combined with the detail from Mortenson’s modeling
efforts ensure these “plug and play” components are safely
and efficiently installed at the site.
Fast Facts
• 831,327 square feet
• $623 million overall project; $389 million in
construction costs
One of the nation’s largest hospitals - being built in less than three years
Located in Denver’s urban core, the Exempla Saint Joseph
replacement hospital is currently being built by Mortenson
Construction. The project includes:
•
360 patient beds
•
21 operating rooms, including two hybrids
•
40 emergency department rooms, including a dedicated emergency department for seniors
•
Three outpatient clinics that will remain on site: The
Caritas clinic, The Bruner Family Medicine Center and
The Seton Women’s Center, which manages about
40,000 patient visits each year.
“The integrated approach is, without question, the way
to do it. It’s precise and helps with the construction
speed, without compromising quality. We are confident
we are building an efficient, sustainable, 21st century
health care facility that will serve our community’s
needs for the next 50 years or more.
Multi-trade racks + head walls are assembled at a local offsite warehouse.
I’ve had a very, very positive experience with
Mortenson and would highly recommend them. “
Part of the design and construction team’s efforts to
ensure the new hospital will meet patient and staff needs
included “Day in the Life” visits. These tours with various
department staff members provided the team with a
strong understanding and appreciation for how Exempla
manages their hospital, what is most important to them,
what defines their success as an organization, and what
special needs the patients and staff have
Understanding these components of a project and
investing the time together helps deliver a better product
best serving the needs of Exempla Saint Joseph patients,
staff, and visitors well into the future.
• Construction start date: December 15, 2011;
Construction completion date: July 25, 2014
for 30.5 month construction schedule.
• The project is expected to create 1400
construction-related jobs and contribute $340
million in labor compensation until its opening in
December 2014.

A Day in the Life
Day in the Life: The Mortenson team observe hospital staff in action.
• One of the fastest-paced projects to ever be built
in Colorado (based on volume)
The 25-foot racks are delivered to the job site and hoisted into place.
• Peak manpower is ~850 construction workers on
site.
• The project is expected to infuse $8 million into
Colorado in use taxes.
• Exempla Saint Joseph currently employs
approximately 2500 people and contributes $177
million in annual labor compensation.
The rack sections are then connected for a plug and play solution.
