The second 2011 edition of "The Monty" covers a real cross section of news items about the
worldwide heat treating industry. For instance we have our first ever list of the largest captive
heat treaters in the world and guess what? The largest that we have run across is a mammoth
operation in Russia of all places. Moving from a global picture we turn to Texas, USA to have a
brief look (and pictures) of a few of the heat treaters in this neck of the woods. Well known Heat
Treat consultant, David Pye provides us with a few thoughts, a few new order announcements
are included and from a practical standpoint we tell you where alloy and energy prices are
headed. Also included in this issue is a listing of used heat treating equipment with pricing and a
number of job opportunities and individuals looking for new positions. We welcome your
announcements, comments and thoughts.

Odds & Ends. Recently "Boeing" auctioned off an Ipsen Horizontal Loading Vacuum Titanium Stress
Relief Furnace, Model Number: HR-40x48x240-1-Bar built in 2009. Nothing wrong with the furnace
however as it turns out it was no longer required by Boeing. The auction was held last week and while we
do not know the purchase price it was probably close to $3 million USD at a guess. Our understanding is
that it sold at auction for a little over $400,000 USD including commission and California sales tax, as
reported by industry sources. Speaking of auctions the remaining assets of "Emerson Power
Transmission" in Ithaca, NY were auctioned off very recently also. The newer heat treat furnaces and
associated items were moved to another Emerson plant in Maysville, Kentucky. The remaining heat
treating equipment was let's say "not pristine" and these are the items that went to auction although
some furnaces were scrapped previous to the auction. It was a real shame to see this plant close, it had
been in the same location for almost 100 years and the history was quite something to see. The plant
itself always reminded me of "Alcatraz", the famous US prison just off of San Francisco, CA in terms of the
look of the building. Where are they now? "Mitko Bogojevski". This is not recent news being a few
months old but within the past couple of weeks we have had a couple of people ask where this very
experienced Southern Ontario heat treater now is-an update is in order. Mitko spent a number of years at
what used to be Stackpole, now Gates Canada (powdered metal transmission components) and fairly
recently moved to commercial heat treater Allied Heat Treat in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. What is
scrap alloy pricing worth these days? This is a question we get asked quite a bit. It fluctuates literally
daily but the most recent pricing we have says that HK material is worth $2.05/pound, HT material
$3.55/pound and HU material $3.85/pound (all prices in US funds). Our friends at "Heatbath/Park
Metallurgical" are celebrating their 100th anniversary which when you think about it is quite something.
It means that this company was founded in 1911 before World War I and it is still going strong. The
company is one of the premier suppliers of salts and quenchants for the worldwide heat treating industry.

Dunkirk Specialty Steel LLC/Dunkirk, NY, USA. December 22 there was an early morning fire at
Dunkirk Specialty Steel in Dunkirk, NY. The fire started in an oil tank associated with one of the annealing
lines. The company operates a number of high temperature annealing furnaces, both open fired and
atmosphere. The fire damaged some of the furnaces which are still not up and running (the site is
still marked as evidence while the investigation continues), however the damage was not extensive and
production needs have been met by other equipment and if need be by other plants in the group. The
furnaces were installed in 2008 for increased volumes of work and increased aerospace applications.
Dunkirk supplies specialty bar, wire, rod and rebar products. This plant is quite something to see, 800,000
square feet on 79 acres. January 28/11
Mexico vs; China. A funny thing has been happening recently. A few years ago Mexico was the
destination of choice for manufacturing companies looking for low cost labor areas, the pendulum
subsequently shifted towards China but it is now swinging back in favor of Mexico again. Mexican factory
wages are now about 14% higher than those in China, the Mexican finance ministry estimates. In 2002,
officials calculate they were 240% higher, canceling out Mexico's natural advantage of proximity. This is
having a real effect on exports with Mexico in 2010 posting a bigger gain in US market share than China
for the first time since 2001. Throw in the fact that shipping costs from China to North America are
increasing and it would appear that Mexico is again becoming the destination of choice for lower cost
labor, especially in the automotive parts sector. Pick any example you want, Linamar, Magna, Dana,
American Axle and all are increasing their presence in the country and also their heat treating
capacity. While the crime rate in Mexico is a real concern we comfortably predict that both captive and
commercial heat treating in the country will continue to grow (late last year as an example Linamar
committed to a large vacuum carburizing system at one of their plants in Mexico). This is not to say that
China will no longer be a rapidly growing area for heat treating, rather that heat treating in China will over
the years be more and more servicing the Chinese domestic market. January 28/11
Where have all the heat treaters gone? There are issues in our industry and always will be but the
number #1 issue I keep hearing about these days is how hard it is to find experienced heat treaters. I
know for a fact that a number of heat treaters lost their jobs in the recent recession and I also know for a
fact that a number were forced into other industries but whether this explains why an experienced person
is so hard to find is open to debate. Perhaps coupled with the fact that heat treating is a job that few
individuals in their early 20's consider explains the shortage. Be that as it may I can think of numerous
examples where retired heat treaters are asked to return by their previous employers either on a full time
or part time basis. This is a situation that I personally do not see a resolution to in the near future.

General Metal Heat Treating/Cleveland, Ohio. The news item below appeared in several local
newspapers recently. While we do not know any of the details I can say that this family owned commercial
heat treating business is a very well run operation so this surprised me. However I will say that it is very
easy to unintentionally run afoul of EPA regulations and when doing an internet search for this news item I
was shocked at the number of fines Ohio EPA has levied in the Cleveland area alone. A quick search
revealed a long list of companies in every industry you can imagine including a taxi company of all things.

"Ohio EPA reached a settlement with General Metal Heat Treating, Inc., for past hazardous waste
violations and issued an administrative consent order on December 23, 2010. The violations occurred at
the General Metal Heat Treating, Inc., facility located at 941 Addison Road, Cleveland, Ohio. The
settlement includes a $23,000.00 penalty, of which $18,400.00 will be deposited into the state's
hazardous waste cleanup fund and $4,600.00 will be paid to the Ohio EPA Clean Diesel School Bus
Program."
Where are they now/Skip Jones. Skip Jones has long been a fixture of the heat treating market in
California, USA working with companies such as Lindberg and Bodycote where he was Western Regional
Manager until he parted ways with the company in June of 2010. Like virtually everybody involved in the
heat treating industry it is a hard field to leave and Skip will be continuing in the industry as a
manufacturers’ representative selling for a few different suppliers. The name of Skip's firm will be "2

Inductoheat/Robert Maderia. "Inductoheat, Inc. Madison Heights, MI, has appointed Robert Madeira
as the Vice President of Heat Treating. Mr. Madeira has worked in the induction heat treat industry for
more than 26 years, most recently as the Director of Sales for Fluxtrol, Inc. He has a BS from Michigan
State and a MA from University of Detroit. As the VP of Heat Treating, Mr. Madeira is responsible for
successfully managing customers needs, leadership of Inductoheat’s business strategies and spearhead
the North American sales efforts. This position reports directly to the President. “With his extensive
background in the heat treating industry, we are excited to see what new business opportunities Rob will

Commodity Pricing. While many costs that heat treaters face are relatively fixed or at least predictable
such as labor, rent, insurance (excluding health care costs) some such as energy and alloy pricing can
vary wildly, which is every heat treaters worst nightmare. What does the future hold: January 25/11

Natural Gas. In North American the energy source of choice is natural gas while Asia, and Europe tend
more towards electrical heating (certainly in many areas of Asia natural gas is not readily available).
Historically in North America natural gas pricing (Dollars Per Million BTU, source Dow Jones & Company)
between the periods of 1993-11-01 and 2010-04-01 has fluctuated between a low of $1.44 USD in June of
2005 and a high of $13.05 at the end of 2005 (part of this enormous difference was due to Hurricane
Rita). Over this 17 year period there have been two instances of very high pricing, 2005 and mid 2008.
Currently pricing is at a relatively "modest" level of $4.82USD/MMBTU with a short term forecast (as
shown in the graph below) showing a small decline. Long term forecasts show no signs of a substantial or
possibly any increase due to the enormous strides in "shale oil" drilling techniques and the resulting glut
of natural gas sources. When we look at these figures we see a 1300% change over a fairly short period
to time, a tremendous fluctuation in anybody's book. Generally captive and commercial heat treaters
handle these "swings" with an added energy surcharge.
Natural Gas Prices
Past Trend Present Value & Future Projection
U.S. Henry Hub. US Dollars per Million BTU.
Nickel Pricing. As the main cost of high temperature alloy components for heat treating furnaces, nickel
is what we watch to determine current and future costs of radiant tubes, base trays, baskets and fixturing.
As natural gas pricing fluctuated wildly over the past number of years so has nickel. Pricing for nickel is
largely determined by the amount of stainless steel products being produced around the world and the
recent recession knocked the heck out of demand and consequently pricing. From "Commodities Now" we
have this explanation and forecast; "The fallout from the financial crisis that afflicted the world economy
has seen nickel prices fluctuate wildly. LME prices peaked at just over US$52,000/t in May 2007, on the
back of strong demand and low stocks, but had fallen by over 80% by the end of 2008, as demand
collapsed. By the fourth quarter of 2009, however, prices had recovered to US$18,500/t. The fall in nickel
prices has been largely due to a collapse in demand. Data for the first nine-months for 2009 shows nickel
consumption at the world level has declined by 9% year-on-year, as end-users aggressively cut
inventories. Output of nickel has also declined sharply. For the first three quarters of 2009, nickel mine
production fell by 18% year-on-year, while primary production was down by 6%. Producers responded
quickly to the fall in demand, with around a quarter of all production suspended during the first half of
2009. Although global demand for nickel has fallen for three consecutive years, a recovery in the global
economy should follow through to see consumption of increase in 2010. Roskill forecasts nickel
consumption will increase by around 7% in 2010. The rise in demand for nickel in the coming years is
primarily due to an increase in demand for stainless steel. Stainless steel production, the largest end-use
for nickel, is forecast to reach 27Mt in 2010 (an 8% increase year-on-year), and almost 30Mt in 2011. As
demand for nickel increases across the globe, production is likely to follow suit. A market surplus of
around 75,000t is forecast for 2010, as output of primary nickel increases to 1.4Mt. Given the market
surplus forecast to develop between 2010 and 2012, nickel prices are expected to be stable. The annual
average price in 2010 is forecast to around US$20,000/t, and expected to rise in both 2011 and 2012. The

average price between 2010 and 2012 is forecast at just over US$22,000/t." To phrase this another way
the Nickel Spot price in June of 2007 was just under $25.00/pound USD in November of 2008 it was just
under $5.00 pound USD, a swing of roughly 500% in just over 1 year.
Electricity Pricing. So far we have seen that natural gas pricing and nickel pricing are expected to
remain stable for the short and medium term. What about electricity? Electricity is an entirely different
beast than natural gas or nickel in that pricing is determined more at a local level than a world level. For
instance in Quebec and Tennessee in North America electricity is dirt cheap because of state level hydro
electric projects. Other areas such as New York State, California and Ontario have very high electrical
rates, largely because of state taxes, generating costs and in our opinion misguided government policies
which force electrical providers to use very high cost renewable energy sources such as wind and solar
(this of course also applies to large areas of Europe). Our research into electricity cost forecasts gave us
exactly what we expected, no national, continent or worldwide forecasts, rather a million different
forecasts mainly at the state level. So we're going to have to rely on anecdotal evidence which tells us
virtually every single heat treater around the world that we have spoken to has been seeing price
increases over the past few years with much larger increases to come. As an example in Ontario electrical
costs for heat treaters are expected to rise 50% in just 5 years and Ontario is not alone in this. For many
heat treaters using electricity (the vacuum guys comes to mind) electrical costs are there single biggest
cost so this is an issue which is only going to get worse.
In summary my advice would be use natural gas to heat as much as you can, replace your alloy over the
course of the year, and figure out ways to cut down on your electrical usage.
Odds & Ends. Mr. Helmut Steinmann, General Manager of "IVA" very recently parted ways with the
company after over 20 years of service. Top management of the company now includes Mr. Helmut Egger
- Managing Director, Mr. Thomas Heine - Authorized Signatory - Head Dept. Personnel and Finance and

Mr. Josef Weißgärber - Authorized Signatory - Head Dept. Service. IVA, based in Dortmund, Germany and
part of Metall Technologie Holding, is one of the largest new furnaces builders in the world. "ALD Vacuum
Technologies GmbH" of Germany recently received a large order from "Xiamen Golden Egret Special
Alloy Co. Ltd.", of China. The order will consist of 3 systems all designed for high pressure vacuum
sintering. "Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited" of Visakhapatnam Steel has plans to set up a new railway
axle manufacturing plant in New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, India. The new plant will have the ability to
forge and heat treat 50,000 forged axles/per year. Our understanding is that "Steve Cargill", who was
the General Manager of the Bodycote facility in Houston, Texas, USA has moved back to the Oklahoma
City, OK Bodycote plant. In response to our recent listing of the largest European new furnace builders a
reader in Europe suggested we had missed two, the "LOI Group", in Essen, Germany and "Chugai Ro of
Japan". Chugai Ro of Japan is of course not European, LOI we are familiar with however we think of the
company more for steel mills than heat treating which is why we did not mention them. January 24/11
Where are they now? Avion. Going back a couple of years we had an advertiser by the name of Avion.
Interesting company in that they claim to be furnace optimizers: service, systems, and spares but with an
international presence which I have not run across before. Anyway we did lose track of the company
during the dark days of 2009 however it would appear that they have been busy. Paraphrasing what we
have heard about the company and what we have received from them we end up with this; January 21/11
"At the beginning of 2010 AVION added another sister company in Turkey called SARVION. Like AVION
the new kids on the block are servicing the heat treating industry in Turkey and connected countries (e.g.
Iraq…) with re-bricking, spareparts, recuperative burner systems and Si/SiC tubes which are not as
popular in Turkey as for example in Germany. Now seven companies belong to the AVION group and they
have found a nice umbrella under which all the members find their forum. This umbrella is the so called
"HEAT ALLIANCE". The members of the HEAT ALLIANCE are, AVION Manufacturing (USA), AVION
Europa (Germany), AVION Central Europe (Poland), SARVION (Turkey) and Thervion (France). Associated
members are Sistem Teknik from Turkey (furnaces), Zink KÖRNER GmbH from Germany (Galvanizing
furnaces), EMB Elektro, Germany (Service and Maintenance). The HEAT ALLIANCE mainly functions as
coordinator for the different marketing activities of its members, e.g. editorials, trade shows
(e.g.Thermprocess). Sales activities of the HEAT ALLIANCE are in niche markets like Hot Dip Galvanizing
Furnaces or Perlite production furnaces (Perlite is used as fertilizer, gypsum additive or building
insulations). HEAT ALLIANCE and its members are now exclusive representatives and distributors for SBS
Corporation (Quench Oil Coolers) and SSI Super Systems (Probes and Analyzers) for the european
markets that HEAT ALLIANCE is represented in. As things progress with these companies we will keep you
updated."
Offshore Steel Certifications. Because we have heard this common refrain so many times over the
years, that steel from the Far East does not meet certifications we felt this brief news items was very
relevant. Mike Emmott of "Keighly Labs" in the UK, a commercial heat treater and testing lab, comments
on this with the usual British flair for understatement. January 21/11
"Manufacturers have been warned to check up on materials certifications for imported metals to protect
against component failures. Firms could be putting themselves at risk by sourcing materials from unknown
suppliers in the Far East, a metals specialist said. Michael Emmott, labs heat treatment commercial
manager at Keighley Labs, said: "Often we find that the raw material is not as specified, even with the
correct certification, creating potential problems down the line." One US study found 60% of imported
steel rods were rated as failures during lab testing, Keighley Labs added. Emmott said: "Given the legal
implications of a failure in the field, it's either a question of verifying incoming material or possibly putting

your own business at risk." Keighley Labs- which offers full analysis of materials- called on manufacturers
to re-inspect or overcheck material certifications."
Lone Star Heat Treating/Houston, Texas. Being in rather a flippant mood I would like to describe Lone
Star as "The Mother of all Heat Treaters" in Texas for the fact that an enormous number of heat treaters
in Texas started their careers with the company as it was one of the first commercials in Texas started in
1945. We have profiled this company before and as this is not the main focus of this news item we won't
worry about it again although we are including our last item about the company from April of 2009 and a
link to their website http://www.lsht.com/. Now what we have today is a fun news item about Lone Star's
annual goose hunt. The company has held a weekend goose hunt for as many years as I have known
them and it is open to customers and friends alike. Held this past weekend the event was as always a
tremendous success with a large turnout. To give you an idea we include two photos below. January 20/11
"Lone Star Heat Treat/Houston, Texas, USA. Everything is bigger and better in Texas including the heat
treating. An example of this would be Lone Star Heat Treat that we have talked about several times over
the years. This is a company which concentrates on the oil and gas industry meaning large volume bar
and tube heat treating which right off the bat puts this company in a very small category of commercial
heat treaters. The basic history of the company is readily available; a family owned business since the
1940's owned by the Van Dorfy family with two operations, one in Houston and one in Denver, Colorado.
However today we mention them for another reason, a reason which should be of interest to most
commercial heat treaters; adding value added processes. Commercial heat treating is a down and dirty
business with small margins which is why a number of commercial heat treaters, looking for a way to
expand their businesses have added "value added processes". The logic is simple, if you are heat treating
a product why not add another process which adds value to your customer, decreases shipping costs and
gives you another revenue stream? In the case of Lone Star it was obvious, their customers required
"deep hole drilling" (drilling out the ID of bar stock to produce a tube suitable for the oil and gas industry)
without the added cost of shipping to another supplier. April 2009."

Turbine Engineering Concepts /Nitrex Metal. Turbine Engineering Concepts a premier provider of

Lucifer Furnaces, Inc. Has supplied a leading ISO 9001 certified analytical testing facility in the Midwest
with a model 7000 AM box furnace for stress relieving. The 7” x 7” x 18” chamber is powered with 8 KW
and heats to 2050°F. The heavy gauge reinforced steel shell is insulated with 6 ½ inches of multilayered
insulating firebrick and mineral wool block for energy efficiency. Easy to replace radiant panels on both
side walls and floor provide heat to the work load which is insulated from the elements by a RA330 alloy
muffle supporting an argon atmosphere. The muffle design reduces scale, achieves lower dew points and
reduces atmosphere consumption. A silicon carbide heath plate supports the muffled work chamber while
allowing thermal transfer from the floor heating elements. An insulated double pivot horizontal swing door,

ZF Group/Gainesville, Georgia, USA. April of 2010 it was announced that ZF, an automotive supplier
for driveline and chassis technology would expand its existing Gainesville, Georgia operation through the
construction of a wind energy plant. While at some point in time we did announce that they had placed a
large order with Ipsen for the heat treating portion of the plant we did not have the details about the
project, now we do. The furnaces were assembled in Ipsen's plant in Kleve, Germany and shipped to the
US where we believe (but will not guarantee) that installation will commence shortly. As you can see a
great deal of this information comes in the form of a press release and gives details about heat treating of
wind components, actually very interesting stuff about this top end heat treating. The system consists of;
"- 3 box furnaces (max. 1050°C) with 4.6 cubic metre load volume (1.5 x 1.8 x
1.7 m) set up for charges up to 7 tonnes
- 2 nitriding furnaces (max. 650°C) with 6.3 cubic meter load volume (2 m diameter x 3 m high)
- 1 50 cubic metre Ipsen SuperQuench oil bath for rapid quenching of components in hardening oil with
larger drive motors and agitators than the standard model, and optimally routed oil flow.
- 1 gas heated preheating furnace (max. 450°C) to reduce preheating times on the other furnaces – can
also be used as a tempering furnace when needed.
- 1 electrically heated tempering furnace (max. 450°C)

- 1 stainless steel component washer
- 2 loaders – specially dimensioned transport- and lift-vehicles able to transport components weighing up
to 7 tonnes at up to 1,000°C between furnaces or from furnace to oil bath, largely insulated from the
cooling effects of the air in the plant.
The loaders have been optimised not only to insulate the hot components from the cooler surrounding air,
but also for optimal transport velocity. Every second counts between furnace and oil bath and the
transport times have been precisely defined. The nitriding furnaces were constructed to fit the largest of
the windmill transmission components. Able to take loads up to 15 tonnes, these furnaces can hold
several of the massive ring gears at a time. Given that these gears need more than 30 hours in the
furnace, with careful planning, the plant can produce 1,000 of these special transmissions per annum. The
three box furnaces are lined with special ceramic insulation rather than the usual fibre insulation,
lengthening the service life of the entire furnace construction. The entire facility has been designed with a
3-shift, six-day, 50 week work-year in mind. The layout as such supports a manufacturing volume of
approximately 1,000 units per annum. The characteristics that heat treatment gives to components are
extremely important in wind generator transmissions – their surface hardness has direct bearing on their
durability and therefore their service life. Wind generators are usually built for 20-year of more or less
continuous operation. In those 20 years, the blades of a 150-metre high windmill will rotate about
180,000,000 (180 million) times at 13-20 rpm, spinning the electrical generator attached to them at a
1:100 gear ratio about 17,000,000,000 times (17 thousand million times in UK terminology, 17 billion
times in US terms). The size alone of wind generator components means greatly increased demands are
placed on the heat treatment of steel components. Their ring gears can be two meters in diameter; the
matching axle shafts up to three metres long. Even the most compact of a wind generator's transmission
gear sets are generally handled with cranes. Though they are only about 30 centimetres across, but weigh
over 50 kilograms. These transmissions are built to take the windmill's roughly 0.3 rpm rotation and step
it up by a factor of 100 so that the generator is delivering under maximised efficiency. The focus of
development centres around the fact that wind generators need to "run forever" –that is, if possible,
maintenance free over a service life of 20 years. Their sheer size multiplies the cost of repair
astronomically, as does the difference between a location on- or off-shore ... not to mention the loss of
profit if power generation is stopped. Wind power durability aspects – background information The
organization “New Zealand Windfarms” recently experienced just how unpleasant transmission failures can
be in high tech windmills. Mechanical defects in their twin-rotor systems caused losses of 6.3 million New
Zealand dollars (ca. 3.4 million euros). The complete breakdown of the affected turbines was caused by
enormous wear to transmission components that had undergone faulty heat treatment. The reported cost
of the subsequent retrofitting and repairs to their several hundred windmills was 24 million New Zealand
dollars (13 million euros)." January 19/11
GM Heat Treat Related Vehicle Recall. Nobody in the heat treating sector needs a lesson on how
important heat treating is but if you do need another example read on (no idea who the supplier of this
product was by the way but they are in big trouble). January 18/11
"Late in December, General Motors recalled 1,262 2010 model year light duty pickup trucks for a rear axle
pin issue but today, GM has expanded that recall to include a much larger group of 2010MY GM trucks
with 26,751 vehicles now involved in this recall. The original GM light duty truck axle recall in December
included the Cadillac Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra (click here
for a look at the original recall announcement). Today's announcement adds to that group a handful of
smaller trucks and a couple SUVs including the standard and ESV versions of the Escalade; the Chevy
Colorado, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe; and the GMC Canyon, Yukon and Yukon XL. This problem
stems from incorrect heat-treating of the pin during the manufacturing process and owners can expect to

receive an email instructing them to return (carefully) to their local dealership where the axle pins will be
removed and replaced by pins that have been properly treated to deal with the inherent abuse. General
Motors asks that if you are the owner of one of these GM trucks, you refrain from driving the vehicle until
the problem is repaired as there are no early warning signs of the problem coming. Once the pin fails, it
happens all at once and that leaves piece of metal floating around the internal workings of the axle
assembly. Should some of that metal get into the wrong place, there is a great risk of the rear axle locking
up sudden - making it much more difficult to control the truck at speed."
SEI Heat Treatment/Magnum Metal Treating Inc. While heat treaters around the world almost
universally had a sleepless year during the recession of 2009, heat treaters in Texas largely slept as well
as they always have. It's a funny thing but Texas is so use to the boom and bust cycles of the oil and gas
industries that one more bust was completely taken in stride. Take commercial heat treater SEI in
Houston, Texas and sister company Magnum Metal Treating in nearby Conroe, Texas. Both are what I
would consider medium to large sized commercial operations, both are dependent upon the oil and gas
industries to a certain extent, both saw a downturn in the recent recession and neither laid employees off,
sold off equipment or drastically reduced hours. Quite the contrary in fact, the two companies took the
opportunity to take advantage of their strong financial positions and upgraded equipment and processes.
SEI was started over 40 years ago and the name originally stood for Spring Engineers Inc. (a company
which still exists but all ties between the two were severed many years ago). It has approximately 14,000
square feet, 20 employees and presents gas nitriding, batch IQ and stress relieving to their customers.
Magnum Metal Treating in Conroe is approximately the same size but it's focus in on Vacuum heat
treating, Ion Nitriding with some batch IQ atmosphere lines. SEI acquired Magnum in August of 2006 and
the two companies naturally complement each other. The owner since 2001 has been a fellow by the
name of Richard Rau who is not a heat treater by background but an individual who did impress me upon
my first meeting with him as a common sense, forward thinking businessman with a very good grasp of
the heat treating market (Rich is shown in the photo below). From right to left; Louis Flores, General
Manager, Mirna Barrera, Office Manager, Rich, John Starkweather, QA Manager for both plants and Gord
Montgomery. We have often commented on how small the worldwide heat treating market is, as an
example John's father is at Phoenix Heat Treat in Phoenix, Arizona, and both John and Louis have spent
part of their working careers with Lone Star Heat Treating in Houston, one of the largest commercials in
Texas and quite a unique operation (more on Lone Star later). January 18/11
"Do we practice an art or a science in Heat Treatment? As heat treaters, are we practicing an art or
a science? That is a question that I keep asking and pondering over. I believe that the ‘art’ has become
the science of metallurgy. Contrary to some who say that heat treatment is not a science or even a craft,
it is a science. The science of metallurgy extends down from the graduate metallurgist down to the
furnace associate who works to loading and unloading of the furnace work baskets. Heat treatment of both
ferrous and non ferrous material requires an understanding of the consequences of:

These are just a few of the subjects that can ultimately lead all of us to be better heat treaters, for after
all, some of the components that are heat treated are life and limb components. We serve industries

Heat treatment will touch (literally) the very fabric of our lives in almost everything that we touch, wear,
travel in, sleep on (springs) and even to venture into space in. How can it not be considered a science?
How can we not have the goal to grow by education? If we grow in our knowledge, we become a more
valuable employee, a more responsible heat treater to the clients that we serve. But most of all we secure
jobs and keep jobs in our country. We can become better heat treaters in the world of metallurgy. I
started my working career in an aircraft manufacturing company and who asked if I would consider
finishing my indentured apprenticeship in the heat treatment department. I was put into the foreman’s
office and told to read! I grew up on books by Dennis K Bullens, Frank Palmer on tool steels, Gregory and
Simmons, Karl Thelning, Albert Sauvoir, and many many other others. It has always been evident to me
that heat treatment is a leading scientific subject that will change on almost a daily and frequent basis. I
have been privileged to get to know many of the world’s great metallurgists and heat treaters of today
and yesteryear.
But there is a common thread that runs through all of what I have talked about, and like or not, we are all
linked to that common thread and that is the thread of education. Knowledge is power and power is
strength! But I so often hear the cry but we cannot take advantage of a metallurgical education system
and education. Yes we can!! Even here in North America, there is The Heat Treatment Academy. This
Academy is organized and run by The Metal Treating Institute with VERY affordable courses with

certificates of completion. These courses embrace many different heat treatment and metallurgical
subjects. It also surprised me to learn just how many people involved in heat treatment have taken these
courses. In excess of 13,000 in three to four years! Even if our company management will not support us
financially, the courses would cost the individual not much more than two or three cartons of cigarettes.
These courses are very affordable to both the individual and the company management The American
Society of Materials runs heat treatment courses such as ‘An introduction to Heat Treatment’, ‘Advanced
Heat Treatment’, ‘Practical Heat Treatment’,’ Induction Heat Treatment’ and many others. Heat
Treatment is and always will be the science of metals and the transformation of metals. But we need

Bodycote PLC/Bullet Proof Clothing. I have heard this story before, however I don't believe it is widely
known. Trivia time; Did you know the world's largest heat treater actually started in the textile

"Bodycote plc (LSE: BOY) is a leading supplier of heat treatments, metal joining, hot isostatic pressing and
coatings services. Based in Macclesfield, U.K., it is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a
constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. The Company was founded by Arthur Bodycote in 1923 as a textile
business under the name of G.R. Bodycote Ltd. It was acquired by Slater Walker in 1951 and demerged
from them in 1973. It refocused on its present activities in the 1970s: its expertise in bullet-proof and
flame retardant clothing facilitated its transformation into the specialist materials sector. From 1979
onwards it made a series of acquisitions, the first of which was Blandburgh, a heat treatment business. In
1980 it went on to buy Zinc Alloy Rust Proofing Ltd, which was the beginning of its metallurgical coatings
business. In 1990 Bodycote acquired Metallurgical Testing Services Ltd (MTS) of Edinburgh from Murray

Texas Vacuum Solutions. At the end of the day there are not a great number of companies based in
Texas that can service and support Vacuum heat treating furnaces. During a recent trip to Texas we
stopped by to visit Texas Vacuum Solutions in the Houston area which is a good, well run, experienced
company started by Matt Burnett a couple of years ago. We took the opportunity to grab a quick photo

"Batch Oven Used for Hydrogen Embrittlement Relief in the Automotive Industry. Wisconsin
Oven designed and manufactured a gas fired batch oven for a supplier of specialty tubing and bar
products. The industrial oven is being used for hydrogen embrittlement relief of steel rods for the
automotive industry. The batch oven has four (4) zones and a load capacity to heat 3,000 pounds of
steel. The heat treating oven has chamber dimensions of 6’6” wide x 28’0” long x 6’0” high, a maximum
operating temperature of 500º F and normal operating temperature of 430° F. The heat treating oven is
constructed with 4” thick tongue and groove panel assemblies and 20 gauge aluminized steel interiors and
ductwork. The heating system features an industrial 850,000 BTU per hour air heat burner which includes
a motorized gas control valve, flame detector and flame relay with alarm horn. The recirculation system
has two (2) 6,000 CFM @ 15 HP blowers, and utilizes combination airflow to maximize heating rates and
temperature uniformity. The batch oven is AMS2750D compliant and required a 15-point temperature
uniformity of +/-20° F at 430° F. The heat treating oven has a NEMA 12 control enclosure with IEC style
motor starters, push buttons, and pilot lights. The temperature for the industrial batch oven is controlled
by a Honeywell UDC2500 programmable controller with auto-tune. January 14/11
Houston HT/Houston Texas. It is always interesting to see how companies grow and expand. In 2007
we had this note about commercial heat treat Houston HT; "Commercial Heat Treating, Texas. Largely
because of the oil industry, the area of North America with the largest growth when it comes to heat
treating, has to be Texas. We've seen captives growing, commercials growing and new commercial
operations springing up. Today we're telling you about another new start up. Robert Gutierrez is a long
standing heat treater dating back to when he was with Hinderliter Heat Treating (which subsequently was
bought by Bodycote). Most recently he was with JMA Heat Treat in Cypress, Texas a medium sized shop
owned by James Arnold. Just over a month ago, Robert left JMA to start up his own company in the
Houston area. He is not yet up and running, but every day brings him a little closer and we would expect
it will not be much longer before he is in operation offering a mix of Induction, Vacuum, Carbottom and
Batch IQ processes. July 2007". In 2009 we mentioned how this company was probably the fastest
growing commercial heat treat in North America. The recession obviously affected the company however
their growth plans are now on fast forward again. Currently the company has 32,000 square feet under

roof but plans are in the works for an additional 40,000 square feet, with a total of 72,000 square feet this
would be quite a feat in just 4 years. Worth mentioning is the fact that Houston HT has probably the
largest gas nitrider in the Southern US, a 64" diameter by 96" deep gas nitrider capable of 15,000 pound
loads. Always a pleasure to watch companies grow and expand. January 13/11

"Solar Manufacturing Ships High Performance Furnace To Major Aircraft Engine Manufacturer
Souderton, PA- Solar Manufacturing recently shipped a high performance vacuum furnace to be used by
a major aircraft engine manufacturer. The furnace, which incorporates super cooling and high
temperature capabilities, will be used for research in heat treating and further development of super alloys
for new and existing applications in the aircraft engine industry. The vacuum furnace is a Model HFL2624-10IQ horizontal front loading system with a work zone that measures ″18
wide x 14″ high x 28″
deep and a load capacity of 500 pounds. “The hot zone incorporates a combination of 0.075
″ thick CFC
graphite hot face backed by multiple layers of high purity graphite felt allowing for an operating
temperature up to 2800oF,” explained Pete Reh, vice president of sales. “The
durable, curved graphite elements provide for rapid and uniform heating; and
the vacuum system will allow for operation in the 10-5 Torr range or better,”
he added. According to Reh, the high velocity gas cooling system will be
capable of quenching at pressures up to 10 bar positive. The cooling system
will consist of a 100 HP blower motor; a variable frequency drive; an allcopper, water-cooled, fin and tube heat exchanger; and unique, tapered graphite gas nozzles which

Ten Largest Captive Heat Treats in the World. Shortly before Christmas we embarked upon a quest to
find the 10 largest captive heat treat departments in the world. While we had some preconceived ideas
about who some of these companies might be, our readers gave us a number of great suggestions-some
of which were new to us. The criteria for being on this list was a combination of number of furnaces and
the total pounds/year of heat treating capacity. Of no surprise to us is the fact that virtually every
company on this list are manufacturers of auto and truck components. Disclaimer time; we do not pretend
that this list is 100% correct as captives generally have no interest in sharing their heat treating capacities
with the world, however we do feel very comfortable saying that the companies on this list all have
enormous heat treat departments and are amongst the largest in the world. So here we have our
suggestions for the 10 largest captive heat treat departments in the world. January 12/11
#1) KAMAZ-Diesel/Naberejnye Chelny, Russia. We actually feel pretty comfortable with our #1
choice. Kamaz is an auto and truck parts manufacturer who over the years has purchased over 50 brand
new multirow pushers, aluminum processing equipment and various other forms of furnaces from Holcroft
alone (AFC-Holcroft). Quite frankly I cannot conceive of a facility with over 50 very large capacity
furnaces.
#2) Volkswagen Gear Heat Treat Kassel/Germany. Producing over 2.5 Million gear boxes a year
means you have to have to have the heat treating capacity to go with it and VW certainly has with a
number of types of furnaces including as you would expect pusher furnaces.
#3) Hyundai/Korea. With at least 30 continuous pusher cells, batch furnaces, pits, vacuums and 9
furnaces in the aluminum shop alone Hyundai is certainly one of the largest in the world. Personally I
expected this facility to be #1 on our list however consensus seems to suggest that it is probably the third
largest in the world.

#4)Timken/Wuxi, China. If you take into account all the Timken plants in the world their combined
heat treating capacity might put them as #1 in total. Looking at their various facilities it would appear that
the fairly new Wuxi facility is their largest and should rank amongst the 10 largest in the world (please
note that while I have visited this facility I am not allowed to describe the operation).
#5) DYMOS/Korea. This operations has at least 7 multi-row pushers (complete cells), 9 batch
carburizers, 2 batch nitrocarburizers 1 massive LOI rotary plus other associated heat treating equipment.
#6)AUTOVAZ/Tolyatti, Russia. Another very large Russian auto and truck part manufacturer. The
company has well over 18 Holcroft pushers.
#7) Chrysler/Kokomo, Indiana. Another auto parts maker, the Chrysler Kokomo plant (there are
actually several) is one of the most diverse on the list. There was a great deal of debate as to who the
largest captive heat treater in North America is, however at the end of the day most individuals we spoke
to felt this to be the largest in North America. The facility has vacuum carburizing, batch IQ's, nitriding
and salt capabilities.
#8) NEXTEER/Saginaw, Michigan. While "The Big Three" (which is becoming an outdated term) might
have drastically cut back on their in house heat treating the fact remains that they do still have a number
of very large heat treating departments. This facility (which was formerly Delphi) at one time boasted the
largest number of batch IQ furnaces under one roof in North America.
#9) Allison Transmission/Indianapolis, IN. Everybody we spoke to about the largest North American
captive heat treats was in complete agreement that the Allison plant in Indianapolis was amongst the
largest-the only debate was where they should be ranked. At the end of the day we ranked them #9 in
the world.
#10) Hansen Transmissions/Bangalore, India. This one is a bit of a wildcard and also the only
company on our list which is not associated with the auto or truck parts industries. Hansen Transmissions
is based in the Netherlands and as you can guess by the name manufacturers gearing. The Bangalore
facility is reasonably new and our understanding is that it has very 26 very large pit furnaces. furnaces,
virtually all large pit furnaces.
While we have rated these ten companies as the largest captives in the world let's mention a few other
suggestions we received. ZF and Volkswagen in Brazil were both mentioned to us several times, WSK (P &
W) in Rzeszow, Poland has almost 50 vacuum furnaces, Hyundai Powertech, Korea has 10 continuous
furnaces and DongWoo (again in Korea) has 17 batch furnaces and three vacuums. Other mentions
included DANA ENCO, Tremec and American Axle all in Mexico. While very large operations I would have
to say that based upon my experience none would be in the 10 largest worldwide. In North America other
suggestions included Rolls Royce in Indianapolis, Indiana, Honeywell, South Bend Indiana with 27 or 28
enormous vacuum furnaces and Ford Sharonville, Ohio with one of the largest vacuum carburizing
operations in the US plus other assorted equipment. We appreciate all the suggestions and welcome your
thought and comments.

Dana/Glasgow, Kentucky, USA. The fate of Dana's Glasgow, Kentucky plant has long been up in the
air. It had been slated to close, however this keeps getting postponed. The abbreviated update below from
the Glasgow Daily Times still doesn't tell us a great deal. It is interesting to see that the heat treat
department at this auto parts manufacturer continues to run 24/7 in spite of the fact that some of the
equipment was actually listed for auction. The facility has a large in house heat treating department
featuring Vacuum Carburizing, batch and continuous furnaces. January 11/11
"GLASGOW, Jan 09, 2011 (Glasgow Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -More than 200 Glasgow factory workers still have jobs in the new year after a local facility did not close at
the end of December as originally planned. The front parking lots of Dana Corporation on U.S. 68/Ky. 80
were filled with cars and trucks each morning this week as the employees returned to the workplace they
had been told back in March would no longer be open at this point in time. According to Doug Smith,
president of Local 9532, United Steel Workers, the workers weren't given much advance notice of the
company's decision to keep production at the facility going. "We were just told on Dec. 31 that it was
extended until February," Smith said during a phone interview Friday morning. Approximately 225
employees will continue to work primarily first and second shifts at the local plant at least through
February. An additional 14 to 20 workers will be on third shift plus heat treat at the facility is a 24/7
operation, which is always manned, according to Smith. The plant is currently manufacturing secondary
gearing and some primary gearing for the automotive industry and will continue to do so through the first
two months of 2011. "These employees are machining heavy-duty truck axle components," said Chuck
Hartlage, manager of corporate communications for Dana Holding Corporation. "Production is expected to
continue at least through February. Specific plans beyond this haven't been determined, but are being
considered and, when final, will first be communicated to our employees." Those specific plans will be
contingent upon talks between Dana and union representatives that have been scheduled to take place in
Detroit at the end of this month and in early February, but the Glasgow facility won't be the only one
involved in negotiations. The fate of all Dana plants in the United States will be discussed during the
meetings, according to Jim Robinson, director of District 7, United Steel Workers, and the chairman for the
steelworkers' side of the Dana negotiating committee. "We have negotiations for all 21 U.S. (Dana)

facilities coming up the end of January and in February. A number of them are steelworker facilities and
another group are United Autoworker facilities. Steelworkers and autoworkers bargain together with
(Dana). Those issues about what work will be done and where it will be done will be a subject of our
negotiations," he said. As far as the future of the Glasgow plant specifically, Robinson couldn't give any
definite promises. "The Glasgow plant -- the decision had been made by the company to close that plant
actually before we organized it four years ago and obviously it hasn't closed. We would like the plant to
remain open, of course, so we'll be talking to them about ways to get that done," he said. There haven't
been any formal talks about concessions or other requirements to keep this last operation in Glasgow
instead of moving it to Mexico as some of the other operations already have been, according to Robinson."
Ajax Tocco/Pillar. Moving to the world of Induction heating we have this interesting news item about
Ajax Tocco acquiring what was formerly Pillar. Very few segments of the heat treating industry are as
dominated by a few major players as is the Induction heating field-this release would tend to reinforce

Odds & Ends. Unlike a year ago all we see in the captive and commercial heat treating industry is signs
of growth-a few examples. Commercial heat treater "Advanced Heat Treat Corp.", in Waterloo, Iowa,
USA has a new Gas and Oxide system. The equipment will bring UltraGlow Gas nitriding, Gas
Nitrocarburizing, Ferritic Nitrocarburizing and Oxidation Treatment processes to AHT's Waterloo, Iowa
facility in the spring of 2011. Between Advanced's four plants the company is far and away the largest
commercial heat treater in North America when it comes to Ion (Plasma) Nitriding. Moving to Texas we
see that commercial heat treater "Southwest Metal Treating Corp.", in Fort Worth Texas is in the
process of adding capacity in their batch IQ department. Owned and run by Ryan Fussell the company is
planning on being very aggressive in the future in their growth. In Michigan we see that "ALD Thermal
Treatment" in Port Huron is also considering adding more capacity. This plant is the largest commercial
heat treater in North America when it comes to vacuum carburizing and has seen tremendous growth over
the past few years. Along the same lines this facility is amongst the largest commercial heat treats in the
US under one roof. Moving on to other topics "Metal Treating Institute" (MTI, the largest organization
of commercial heat treaters in the world) has scheduled their spring meeting April 7-9 at the Naples
Beach Resort & Golf Club in Naples Florida. Our final news item for today actually comes from the
"Democratic People's Republic of Korea" (North Korea to you and I). For reasons unknown to us it
has been popping up here and there on the internet that the country has developed a new type of Plasma
Heat Treating; "Pyongyang, January 7 (KCNA) - A new technology of plasma heat treatment has been
developed in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The technology ensures required hardness and
rational composition of metal by using air instead of argon gas." I don't expect to see many systems in
North America in the near future. January 10/11
10 Largest Captive Heat Treaters in the World. Shortly before Christmas we embarked on a journey
to find with our readers help the largest captive heat treat departments in the world. A news item from
December 23 which is further down this page listed a number of possibilities, since that time we have
received at least 20 more suggestions. These include Volkswagen gear heat treat in Kassel/Germany
which produces 2.5 Million gear boxes a year, Dana Toluca, Mexico with 20 batch furnaces, Ford
Sharonville, Ohio with a number of very large ECM vacuum carburizing systems, Rolls Royce,
Indianapolis, Indiana which is probably the most diverse in North America with "Nitrex" nitriding
systems, batch IQ furnace and pits just to mention a few, Allison Transmission again in Indianapolis,
Volkswagen in Brazil and Tremec in Queretaro Mexico which is probably the largest in that country.

Al-fe Heat Treating/Defiance, Ohio, USA. In the darkest days of 2009 many questioned whether the
auto industry would ever come back. Needless to say it has and this is translating into a lot more heat
treating projects for commercial and captive heat treaters alike. A perfect example is Al-fe Heat Treating
in Defiance, Ohio (Al-fe is the largest commercial processor of aluminum work in North America). The
plant was closed down during the depths of the recession however it has been reopened and the company
is making major new investments in the facility. Al-fe has planned a $15 million investment in equipment
in connection with Powertrain's Ecotech and Gen V engine programs. Specifically, the company will
provide heat treating services for these programs. As part of the program Al-fe is entering into a
partnership with a local company by the name of Godfrey & Wing who will invest $1 million for
"sophisticated industrial X-ray equipment." This will provide vacuum impregnation of castings and X-ray
analysis of castings for the Ecotech and Gen V engine blocks". January 6/11

"Retech Systems LLC, a Seco/Warwick company, signs contract for PLN 65.4 million 5th Jan, 2011. Retech
Systems LLC, a company from the SECO/WARWICK Group, one of the world's leading producers of
equipment for heat treatment of metals, has signed a contract for about PLN 65.4 million (USD 21.56
million) to manufacture and deliver equipment for production of large-scale titanium metallurgical semimanufactured items for one of the largest investment projects of this kind, being carried out in
Kazakhstan. The buyer is an international joint venture that includes the largest titanium producer in
Kazakhstan. The contract for signed for a period running through May 2013. Retech Systems LLC is one of
the world's top three producers of equipment for vacuum metallurgy of titanium and specialty metals
(including zirconium, niobium, tantalum, nickel and cobalt), with a brand recognized worldwide. The
vacuum furnace that is Retech's main product uses an electron or plasma beam to melt titanium and
alloys of nickel or other specialty metals (cobalt, zirconium, platinum and others). Retech equipment is
also used for casting of turbine blades for aircraft engines and gas turbines. Other equipment employs
incineration in plasma for utilization of difficult wastes, such as waste from nuclear power plants or
nuclear-powered ships. SECO/WARWICK SA has been the owner of 100% of the shares of Retech Systems
LLC since December of this year (previously, from July 2007, it held 50% of the shares). "We are very
pleased with the signing by Retech Systems LLC of a major contract with a customer from Kazakhstan,"
said Leszek Przybysz, CEO of Seco/Warwick SA. "This contract reinforces the already strong backlog at
Retech and confirms the excellent prospects for development of the company over the upcoming years.
This is especially gratifying since Seco/Warwick SA became the 100% owner of Retech earlier this month."
Solar Atmospheres/PID Tutorial. "Souderton, Pa. Solar Atmospheres Creates "Tutorial on
Understanding PID Control As Applied to Vacuum Furnace Performance". Solar Atmospheres, Inc. has
written a technical white paper on understanding and proper usage of PID parameters as they relate to
controlling vacuum furnace temperature. This tutorial will assist furnace engineers and operators to better
understand and properly use the functions of a PID Controller and thereby obtain improved temperature
control, particularly in program ramping and minimizing temperature overshoot, required for AMS 2750D.
This paper describes how to both manually and automatically set PID values for various temperatures of
operation. It highlights how to establish better results especially in the lower temperature ranges of
operation (300 - 1500oF) and also how to better understand instruments that have the Autotuning
feature. Solar Atmospheres is one of the largest privately owned commercial heat treating and brazing

Schafer Gear Works/South Bend Indiana, USA. Gear manufacturer Schafer Gear Works in South
Bend, Indiana is working on a joint venture with a foreign company that should result in a new
manufacturing facility which will produce timing gears for engines for the heavy duty truck market. The
facility with an estimated cost of $15 million will be located on the South Bend campus of Schafer Gear
Works, at 4701 Nimtz Parkway. Currently the heat treating is outsourced however the company is thinking
of putting in their own heat treating department in the new facility. Over the years we have had a number
of debates on this website about whether it makes more sense to outsource heat treating or to do it in
house. I have to confess that my feelings have changed to some extent. I have reached the point that I
would suggest every manufacturer should at least look at outsourcing and while every case is different I
strongly suspect that a number of companies would find it makes more sense to send their work out to
commercial operations than to do it in house. January 5/11

General Motors/Willow Run, Michigan. December 15/2010 the GM Willow Run, Michigan, USA plant
produced their last automatic transmission. This is a well known story, the "Big Three" closing down older
plants and largely exiting the heat treating business but it is still hard to watch. One former employee at
the plant had this to say; (heartfelt but comparing the heat treat department to hell seems a little over
the top). "Goodbye old friend. I'll remember your cobbled wooden floors, the deafening thumps from the
bank of multi-ton stamping presses as it hammered 5+mm steel into torque converter housings, the
heavy taste and smell of machining fluids that would fog the plant on hot days, and finally the sight of the
heat treatment furnaces belching their flames. Willow Run, when standing near your furnaces and feeling
its radiative roar of fire, you were the earthly incarnation of hell." January 4/11
Fengdong Thermal Technology/China. While I seriously doubt that anybody is not aware of the
growing size of the Chinese heat treating market this is a further example of the incredible growth over
the past few years. New furnace builder and commercial heat treater Jiangsu Fengdong Thermal
Technology as of December 31 2010 became a publically traded company. The company located in
Yancheng, China was founded in 1988 and according to the press release below had sales of 220 million
yuan in 2009 which is approximately $34 million USD. The company offers virtually every type of heat
treat furnace and primarily sticks to the Chinese market with heavy exports to neighbouring countries
such as Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, and Malaysia. In 2008 the company
entered into a distribution agreement with Consolidated Engineering Company (CEC) of Georgia and sold
one batch IQ line into North America however since that time we have not run across the company in NA.

"December 31 -- Jiangsu Fengdong Thermal Technology (002530), Titan Wind Energy (Suzhou) (002531),
Zhejiang Shimge Pump Industry (002532) and Goldcup Electric Apparatus (002533) debuted on the Small
and Medium-sized Enterprises Board today, according to a filing by the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
Fengdong Thermal Technology issued 34 million shares at a price of 12.00 yuan per share, raising 408
million yuan from its initial public offering (IPO). It will have an enlarged share capital of 134 million
shares after the completion of its IPO. The company specializes in the research, development and sale of
thermal machines and provides heat treatment processing service for the metal components of machine
manufacturers. It posted revenue of 220 million yuan in 2009 and net profit of 40.87 million yuan."
NTN Joint Venture. The press release below from bearing giant NTN Corp., tells us how the company is
setting up a joint venture to manufacture hub bearings. What is known is that the venture will be located
in Carol Stream, Illinois, USA, will have approximately 180 employees and will be about 53,000 square
meters in size. Turning and heat treatment will start June of 2011 although there is no word about what
form the heat treating department will take. Currently NTN has several locations in North America with
some incorporating heat treating and others outsourcing their heat treating requirements. January 3/11
"NTN Establishes Joint Venture in North America for the Pre Processes of Manufacturing Hub Bearings.
NTN Corporation (hereafter, NTN), Takao Kogyo Co., Ltd. (hereafter, Takao Kogyo) and Asahi Forge
Corporation (hereafter, Asahi Forge) have decided to establish a joint venture in North America. The new
company will carry out the integrated production of forging, turning, and heat-treatment as the pre
processes of manufacturing 3rd generation hub bearings for automobiles. Purpose of establishing the joint
venture; In North America, with the recovery of demand for automobiles, particularly with an increase in
new orders from American auto manufacturers, a significant rise in demand for hub bearings is
anticipated. NTN has been steadily boosting its production capacity at its plants that manufacture finished

hub bearings, but the company also needs to increase capacity in manufacturing pre processes. At this
time, NTN has decided to establish a new company jointly with Takao Kogyo and Asahi Forge, two
companies that offer high level manufacturing technologies for integrated production of forging, turning,

production of smaller and lighter hub bearings, which will contribute to reduce automobile's fuel
consumption and improve its ride. Also, integrating production of the pre processes will strengthen cost
competitiveness and improve the profitability of products for small-sized automobiles. In the future, the
original manufacturing technologies that the new company establishes will be rolled out in Europe, China,
and other regions. This will make the company's automotive driveline products highly competitive,
including constant velocity joints, and establish a commanding position for the company in the global
market."

Uses a 36" x 36" tray with a 20" high door opening. A typical roller hearth cycles at a preset time and
advances the load, one tray at a time, through the furnace. Based on the dimensions, the normalizing
furnace should hold 13 trays at a time and the tempering furnace should hold 16 trays. If you advance the
normalizing furnace every 18 minutes, you will move a tray through the furnace in about 4 hours. If you
advance the tempering furnace every 15 minutes, you will move a tray through the furnace in about 4
hours.
Both the high heat and the temper have atmosphere. The high heat max temperature rating is at least

temperature control instrument calibrations, repair/corrective maintenance services for
control systems and instrumentation at different client locations throughout the
Southeast. This field service position requires a focus on customer service and a

Our technicians calibrate, troubleshoot, install and service control instruments, as well as perform
temperature uniformity studies on industrial furnaces used for steel processing. We utilize state-of-the-art
equipment with a focus on electronic technology for our primary source of data collection, management
and communication

Qualifications
