“Before I Die” Global Art Project Comes to Delhi
Project Focuses On Sharing Feelings & Goals

August 2014
Orientation Issue
Before I Die is a global art project that invites people to reflect on their
lives and share their personal aspirations in a public space. The seed
for this amazing program grew from the heart of a young artist in New
Orleans, Candy Chang, in 2011. To date, over 500 “walls” have been
created in 70 countries in 34 different languages, crossing all political,
ethnic, religious and geographical boundaries. This program allows people
to share their feelings, ambitions, dreams, and aspirations in a very public
way. Join other community members to launch a community-based program and spirit focused on bringing people and their thoughts together in a
creative and inspirational way. The kickoff date is Thursday, September 11
(National Day of Service) at Courthouse Square in Delhi at noon.
From Russia, China, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Australia, Japan, to
North and South America, Before I Die simply allows people to share their
dreams, goals, ambitions, and thoughts in a very public, yet anonymous
manner. These three walls are shared spaces where people can post views
on the meaning of life and opportunities yet to be achieved, express sadness, joy, forgiveness…and even shame. The range of emotions will match
the number of people who will share their aspirations with everyone who
views them.
Like us on
Facebook!
We simply ask that people treat these three spaces with dignity and care.
They are, after all, your spaces and thoughts. This program is supported by
concerned, caring people in Delaware County who represent a wide range
of organizations: The Delaware County Office of the Aging, The Catskill
Area Hospice and Palliative Care, SUNY Delhi, Veterans Service Agency
of Delaware County, Delaware Academy Central School District at Delhi,
The Arc of Delaware County, the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi, and
the Delaware County Maintenance Department. Representatives of these
groups will be taking care of the walls every day during the life of this
program.
We encourage all to come and hope everyone will step up, pick up a piece
of chalk, share their thoughts and dreams, and spread the word about this
program…it will feel great to do so! Please visit the Before I Die website: http://beforeidie.cc/ for more information and feel free to post your
comments on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BeforeIDieWall. Twitter and Instagram: @BeforeIDieDelhi.
Come by Courthouse Square, pick up a piece of chalk, and share with
us…IT WILL FEEL GREAT TO DO SO!!

Campus Saw a Busy Summer!
Infrastructure & Technology Upgrades
Construction: Got water? A water main break in June necessitated a flurry of construction to install a new water main. Over 7,000 lineal feet of underground water pipe was
replaced, with roads and walkways milled and repaved.
Class Act: The second and third floors of Evenden Tower (E Tower for those in the know)
saw several equipment and furnishing upgrades.
Website Makeover: delhi.edu got a makeover earlier this month. You will enjoy the new
design changes and navigate to your favorite pages more easily.
What’s a Moodle? Moodle is the course management system we use to facilitate online
courses and staff resources in Vancko Hall. CIS staff labored diligently to upgrade to
Moodle version 2.6. Expect to see some new features in your online courses!
New Wireless System: Farewell, Bronco Wireless. You are being retired. This month,
CIS introduced DELHI-SECURE, our new wireless network, which lets you easily selfregister your devices. See details on page 7 about how to connect to DELHI-SECURE.
Notable Events
Alumni Weekend: In June, Alumni Weekend featured the dedication of the Marty
Greenfield Student Activities Suite, celebrated 2014 Distinguished Alumnus awards and
inductions to the Athletic Hall of Fame and much, much more. Thanks to photographers
Kim MacLeod, Director of Communications & New Media, College Advancement, and
Virginia Giles ’13. You can see photos from this fun-filled weekend at https://www.flickr.

New York State Summer School of the Arts held their second residency program in
July. Thirty-two students participated in classes. Performances in Okun Theatre were free
and open to the public, including “Dust to Dust,” a play written by and starring Elizabeth
Hess, a Shakespeare workshop led by professional actor and director Neill Hartley, and a
workshop led by Addams Family star John Astin.

President Vancko’s Top Ten Tips
for New Students
Welcome New Students!
Instead of a “traditional welcome letter,” I thought I’d welcome you with my
“Top Ten Tips for Success in College.”
10. Go to class, go to class, go to class! It’s hard to believe, but you won’t know what’s
going on if you don’t.
BroncoCHECK
Take Action
9. Check out the Farrell Student & Community Center – the perfect spot for you to
eat, meet, and greet!
SUNY Delhi
8. Get involved! Students involved in campus activities are happier and more
academically successful. Join a club, attend a concert, volunteer. An excellent way to figure it all out is to attend the Student Activities Fair, Thursday, September 18, 12:30 – 1:45
p.m. in Farrell Center. See the details on this page, lower right.
7. Visit the Resnick Learning Center. Lots more than lattes and muffins here. Learn
about free tutoring, opportunities to work on campus and much more.
BroncoCHECK is Underway at SUNY Delhi!!
6. Explore the campus. Know the best eateries? The best places to study? Where commuters hang out? Learn the campus so you can own the best spots.
5. Learn about the community. The Village of Delhi is more than the bank and the post
office. Take a walk, make note of the businesses that honor “Delhi Downtown Dollars
(3D)” where you can buy stuff, and charge it to your 3D account.
4. Be healthy. Attend one of the special events covering important topics for freshmen,
like relationships, student health issues, campus and internet safety, cultural awareness,
and how to get involved on campus. Watch your campus email and Student Activities
page http://www.delhi.edu/campus_life/student_activities/index.php for details!
3. Make a new friend. With more than 900 first-time, full-time students on campus, your
new best friend awaits you. Make an effort to get to know some of the 900—you might
make a BFF.
2. Get to know your advisor. Your advisor should be your new best bud. S/he can help
you with all things academic. Make visiting your advisor a priority.
1. Come say “hi.” My office is 135 Bush Hall and I really would like you to stop by and
introduce yourself. I love meeting students and you never know when it might come in
handy to say, “I know the president.”
I wish you a terrific start and a great year. Welcome to SUNY Delhi!
“A BroncoCHECK is an intentional decision that an
individual or group makes to intervene in a situation that
has the potential to be risky, harmful, unhealthy,
or an emergency.”
A new bystander intervention program is up and running
at SUNY Delhi this fall. Modeled after an award-winning
program at SUNY Brockport, BroncoCHECK is designed
to create a healthy and safe community for everyone at
SUNY Delhi.
A bystander is anyone who is aware of or observes
situations or interactions that could be risky or dangerous. The goal of BroncoCHECK is to increase awareness
and understanding of problematic and unjust behaviors,
instill a sense of community responsibility for helping
solve problems and support others, and to empower
people to act individually and collectively.
As a small and close-knit community that puts students
first, SUNY Delhi is already a supportive and caring
place. BroncoCHECK takes us to the next level and helps
the campus reduce the risks associated with alcohol
poisoning, sexual assault, bullying, and other unsafe
behaviors.
For more information or to get involved with the
BroncoCHECK steering committee, check out our website at www.delhi.edu/BroncoCHECK.

Video Game Central
WIC Fashion Show Was Hot, Hot, Hot!!
by Ryan Wallace
So, with a new year for everyone starting, I would like to extend a welcome
back to the students who have returned.
And for those who are new, I would like
to say welcome to Delhi. I hope you
enjoy yourselves here.
Sadly, this is my last post for the video
game column, so I’m going to make it
count.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Now this was a game that was amazing
to go through. It is a reboot of the classic
Castlevania series (for those who don’t
know, Castlevania first started in 1987),
and I would consider it almost a prequel,
even though it has a very different story
line from other Castlevania games. You
play as Gabriel Belmont, a knight of the
Brotherhood of Light. You are sent on a
quest to defeat the Lords of Shadow, in
order to restore the link between Heaven
and Earth. Gabriel also has a personal
agenda of wanting to restore his dead
wife back to life.
There are three main Lords that you go
after: the lord of the Lycans, lord of the
Vampires, and lord of the Necromancers. As you continue on your journey,
you find out more about Gabriel, and
what his quest is doing to him. The
graphics in this game are amazing, and
it is very much like God of War for the
combat system. Yes, I like hack and
slash games, and this is one of the better
games in that category. There are two
sequels to this game, the first one goes
on a bit more into the Belmont clan and
their legacy, and Lords of Shadow 2 actually has you in a modern day setting. I
highly recommend this game, as well as
any of the Castlevania series.
Drakengard 3
This is one of the
few games that
Square Enix has
actually done a
really good job
on. It is a prequel
to the Drakengard
series, taking
place 100 years before the actual story.
You play as Zero, who is an intoner,
and she has her partner, a dragon named
Michael. Intoners rule the different
kingdoms in the land, and Zero is out
to kill all of them. This game has a
weird plot, but at the same time, if you
like hack and slash games, plus a lot of
blood, then it is a fun game. Besides the
gameplay, it also has a great music to
it, which is something that Square Enix
always does well on.
Another thing that really sets this game
apart is the side quests. Yes, even after
the main stories, there are still more
things to do. They also allow you to unlock items and upgrades that you can’t
get just playing the main story lines.
One other thing I will add in is that there
are multiple story lines to this game, so
even when you think you have beaten
one part, another part starts up and it
could include things from the previous
story line in it, so it is a very fun game
with some very interesting plot lines.
This is a really fun game to play, especially when you just want something for
stress relief (which I know many of you
will need A LOT).
Editor’s note:
The author is a May 2014 Veterinary
Science graduate. Good luck in your
future endeavors, Ryan, and thanks for
serving as Campus Voice senator and
columnist extraordinaire!

The West Indian Coalition hosted their annual fashion show on April 26 and
if you missed it, you missed out. The show was held for the first time ever
in the Farrell Commons after being held at the Okun Theatre for the past
two years and in the gym during the spring of 2011. The setup of the show
was extremely alluring. The seats quickly filled up as the live DJ played
music to warm up the eager and interested crowd. The audience wasn’t only
filled with
students, as we had visitors from schools like SUNY IT,
Oneonta,
University of Buffalo, along with plenty of Delhi alumni,
two of whom were the hosts of the night, and they did a remarkable job.
The evening began with an introductory movie featuring the members of
the club acting as preppy students in a classroom where WIC’s president,
Kelsey Giddings, is left all alone in the classroom as the teacher and the rest
of the students have a party outside. After that the show began! The models
came out to roars and cheers as they sported clothing that was meticulously
selected for each scene. The lights provided for the show gave it an ethereal
feel, and made you feel as if you were sitting at a fashion show somewhere
in midtown Manhattan. The show was filled with several scenes that were
perfectly executed, intermissions by the hosts that were entertaining, and
even dance performances during the cultural scene that added a whole new
element to the show.
The show was cut short about two scenes due to a fire during the lingerie
scene. No one was injured as the fire was put out, and the after-party, cosponsored by Delta Omega Epsilon and Lambda Alpha Upsilon, ensued following an hour and a half recess. Congratulations to the West Indian Club
and all of its members and models for an amazing show.
Can’t wait till next spring!!

UDEFest Lightened the Load Before Finals Week
Story and photos by Carissa VanDusen, Campus Voice President
UDEFest is a campus-wide carnival created and organized by the brothers and sisters of
Upsilon Delta Epsilon. Held in mid-May, it was a great tension tamer for the end of the
semester. This year’s theme was Military. Clubs and organizations alike had a chance to
participate in this event with the faculty and student body.
This year there were activities such as engraving dog tags, wax hand statues, henna
body art (see photo at right), and inflatables. Spencer Lightfoote chaired the committee
for this year’s carnival. With help from the brothers and sisters of Upsilon Delta Epsilon
he pulled off another fun and entertaining UDEFest.

Degree Works is Live!
Degree Works is a tool that allows students to track courses in progress and help
determine what courses are still required for their program. Degree Works helps
as students work with their advisers on creating a course schedule. This program
will replace the current Curriculum Advising and Program Planning (CAPP). Degree
Works is designed to collaborate with current campus software to provide an upto-date academic history and degree audit.
Why the transition from CAPP to Degree works?
SUNY has purchased Degree Works for their entire system in order to support the
Seamless Transfer and Student Mobility Initiatives.
Degree Works is required by all SUNY institutions. SUNY Delhi has been directed
to move to the new system to support system-wide initiatives as outlined in
the SUNY Degree Planning and Auditing project.
Degree Works is a powerful degree auditing tool, and has a much more robust
feature set. The system offers many advantages over CAPP, especially in its visual
display and ability to convey and represent more information and requirements.
Students, faculty, and advisers can use Degree Works to understand the program
requirements as well as plan their course more easily than before. Additional
features include:

A Special Message From
the SUNY Delhi Advancement Team
Welcome back students, and congratulations to the hundreds
of students who earned scholarships from The College
Foundation at Delhi this year.
The Foundation works closely with SUNY Delhi’s Financial
Aid and admissions offices and academic departments to
provide financial assistance to deserving students.
Individual scholarships are created by generous donations
from alumni; current and retired faculty and staff; your
student colleagues and your parents; local and national
foundations, associations, companies, and the many friends
of SUNY Delhi.
More than $550,000 in student assistance was approved for
2014 – 2015. This is an increase of 17% over last year and
we expect this total to increase each year as new gifts and
pledges enhance the Foundation’s scholarship program.
Have a great semester!
The SUNY Delhi Advancement Team

The Hold Steady Headlines
“Brooklyn @ Belleayre”
August 30
Highmount, NY — The 2014 season at Belleayre
Music Festival wraps up in ultra-cool style with
The Hold Steady headlining a packed lineup of
Brooklyn@Belleayre bands on Saturday, August
30. Joining The Hold Steady will be up-andcoming bands Big Data, Lily & The Parlour Tricks,
and Joni Fatora. This concert features some of
Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s brightest upcoming bands, DJs, and brands. This festival-style
event will be a great way to hear the coolest, cutting edge music and to sample some iconic
Brooklyn brands. The show begins at 6 p.m. and will be held on several stages. Ticket sales
from this event will also benefit Brooklyn’s Horizon Foundation, providing academic support
and enrichment to students in grades K-8, as well as the Belleayre Conservatory.
The Hold Steady
The Hold Steady developed a rabid fan base and a reputation as the best bar band in America,
even though they graduated from playing bars early in their career and opened for the Stones
in 2007. The band’s songs worked sly updates on classic rock, mixing huge riffs and shoutalong choruses. Craig Finn’s lyrics chronicle the lives of hard-drugging rock & rollers and
damaged young persons: tramps seeking salvation, religious or otherwise. Longtime Minnesota Twins fans, they also recorded a lilting rock version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”
for use during the seventh-inning stretch of Twins games and covered Bob Dylan’s “Can
You Please Crawl Out Your Window?” for the soundtrack to the 2007 Dylan biopic I’m Not
There. The band’s current release, “Teeth Dreams,” received critical praise. The band will
open for The Replacements September 19 at Forest Hills Stadium. (from Rolling Stone)
Big Data
Formed in 2013, Big Data is an Electro-Rock project based out of Brooklyn, founded by
producer + composer Alan Wilkis and vocalist Daniel Armbruster. The duo “aims to explore
the relationship between man and machine and how the Internet has reshaped the human
experience.” In October 2013, Big Data came out with a 4-track CD simply titled “1.0.” The
set includes the Alternative Songs’ top 40 hit “Dangerous.”
Lily & The Parlour Tricks
Lily & The Parlour Tricks’ influences range from The Andrews Sisters and The Everly
Brothers to Nine Inch Nails and The White Stripes. They pay respect to the past, indulge in
the present, and march steadily into the future with their idiosyncratic brew of siren-song
harmonies, thundering bass + drums and wickedly distorted guitar. They are working on a
series of new recordings in Nashville, set for 2014 release.
Tickets for Brooklyn@Belleayre range from $66/56/46/26 lawn. For tickets and information,
contact the Belleayre Music Festival at 800 942-6904, ext. 1344, email
belleayremusicfestival@gmail.com or visit belleayremusic.org. Belleayre Music Festival
concerts are held on the grounds of Belleayre Mountain in Highmount, NY.

Poetry Corner
Remember
by Kristina Nunley
Hey, remember me?
I’m that little voice inside your head.
You know, the one that goes:
Don’t do that; that’s a bad idea.
Oh, yes, that’s right.
You were driving.
That little thing went off.
And now, here we are.
It’s nice to finally meet you,
You know, face to face.
You’re probably wondering:
How is this even possible?
Texting while driving.
Everything that we’ve heard about.
I didn’t think that was dangerous.
It was more than that: it was deadly.
Don’t you remember?
That little thing couldn’t wait.
I forget what it’s called.
It goes: ring, ring!
Hey, do you remember?
