There are clan gatherings, festivals, special sporting events, music and concerts taking place all across the country, all year long. Communities throughout Ireland are showcasing and sharing the very best of Irish culture, tradition, business, sport, fighting spirit and the uniquely Irish sense of fun. Over 70 million people worldwide claim Irish ancestry. The Gathering Ireland 2013 provides the perfect excuse to reach out to those who have moved away, their relatives, friends and descendants, and invite them home. The Gathering is the people’s party. It kicked off in spectacular style at the New Year’s Eve Festival in Dublin and is being celebrated through gatherings of the people and Ireland’s major festivals during 2013. So now it is over to you. It is in your hands. Be part of it. As chairperson of The Rhode Parish Gathering I welcome you all home to our Gathering Festival weekend and I hope you have a very enjoyable but safe stay back in the Parish. I am sure you will see changes from the last time you were home but we hope that you will see this visit in the positive nature that The Rhode Parish Gathering committee have endeavoured to put this weekend of events on. I would like to thank IPB Gathering Ireland for choosing our Gathering as a flagship event for the county and indeed to Offaly Local Development Company for their outstanding support in helping us achieve our goal. To all our local businesses, our priests, our clubs and organisations, our local media and of course our committee, I extend sincere thanks in helping put on this wonderful event. You will of course notice our state-of-the-art Information Centre and again it is with thanks to Evelyn Mulvin for supporting with this and also to the Parish enterprise in their help with works carried out. Our weekend is all about fun, enjoyment, song and dance and of course if you’re into sport, there is something there for everybody too. I would like to congratulate Croghan School celebrating 50 years on Friday and I extend a warm welcome to our Olympic hero from Bejing 2008 Kenny Egan for coming down to meet all the boys and girls taking part in our school olympics. Also on Friday we hope to break the world record for the most people taking part in ‘rock the boat’ and we will open our Museum and have a super opening ceremony celebrating local talent at 7:30. A Macra reunion with an Elvis theme has been put together by Charles Malone which will close events on Friday, but Saturday morning another record attempt of vikings at The Croghan Hill Challenge is followed by Rhode GAA Club beginning their 125 year celebrations hosting the Tullamore Court Hotel Senior Football Championship match in Fr. Dowling Park. Both Cemetery Masses take place in the Parish over the weekend and another highlight of the weekend is our Gathering Rose. Finally, the ESB reunion takes place on Sunday and Clonmore Harps celebrate 25 years since being reformed in 1988 with a 12km Run, a Sports Day, 6km Walk and the Clonmore 88 which is not to be missed. Lots of entertainment, great food and drink and a friendly warm atmosphere will hopefully help you enjoy your stay. To all our local parishioners too we extend sincere thanks for your support and I hope that everybody has a wonderful weekend and let’s make it a weekend to remember and cherish. Go raibh míle maith agat, Jody Gunning 3 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:18 Page 4 The Gathering Information Centre The Gathering Information Centre opened on Easter Sunday, March 31st, and was very kindly donated to the Parish Gathering committee for use by Evelyn Mulvin. This facility will no doubt be showcased on our Gathering Weekend and many people will see the true potential of this wonderful building. To the FÁS employees who helped out with getting the Centre ready we extend our sincere thanks and Chairperson Jody Gunning also played a pivotal role along with Mary Pender in ensuring that the work was completed in the tight timeline. The Information Centre looks brilliant and it hosted the Offaly Gathering steering group meeting on Wednesday, April 10th and also Fáilte Ireland also paid a visit. The praise from Offaly Gathering steering group chairperson Peter Ormond summed it all up when he outlined the innovation of The Rhode Parish Gathering to secure such a facility which plays a huge role in The Parish Gathering. Finally it is worth mentioning a second time, sincere thanks to Evelyn Mulvin and the Mulvin family for this wonderful facility. 4 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:18 Page 5 Scoil Bhríde Croghan 50 years old Scoil Bhríde has been an integral part of the community of Croghan since it first opened in 1963. The school has a great legacy of history and legends in the Croghan area and is well presented on the school website www.croghanschool.ie ICT is very important to the future development of our country and the new computer room built in 2009 is a real help to Scoil Bhríde’s pupils in developing their IT skills. Pupils at Scoil Bhríde are using these skills to take part in the Comenius European Partnership Programme. We’re very much part of Europe and this is a great way to learn about European cultures and languages. The area around Croghan has a notable history of traditional music and artistic endeavour, and it is borne out by the number of pupils winning awards for music and art competitions - and by the excellent singing skills. Sport has also been an important tradition for this school, especially Gaelic Football, with the school team winning several titles over the years. There is a well developed sense of community in Croghan. The school plays its part in this to the full. Currently Parents and Toddlers group, the ladies’ football team, and those attending Adult Education courses make good use of the school’s new facilities. Also the new General Purpose Area has been used to celebrate victorious homecomings for local GAA teams including the recent Intermediate successes. The extension and refurbishment project which was opened by An Taoiseach Brian Cowen in 2009 was funded by the Department of Education and Science to the tune of almost €900,000. The Croghan community made a much valued contribution of over €70,000. This was down to the then Board of Management, Principal, Gerry Hickey, his staff, the Parent’s Council, parents, the GAA Club, past pupils and all members of the wider community who were involved in fundraising for the project. The legendary Gerry Hickey has since retired from the principal role and his contribution for over 25 years was valued by everybody. However the legacy of the Hickey contribution will still carry on as his daughter Kathleen is now the Principal of the school. On Friday, May 3rd 2013 Scoil Bhríde Croghan celebrates a fantastic 50 years with great credit to all who have contributed to the wonderful success of the school. Here’s to the next 50. 5 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:18 Page 6 & The School Olympics & RCB Community Games RCB Community Games are an independent voluntary organisation providing opportunities for children and young people to grow and develop in a positive and healthy way while experiencing a wide range of sporting and cultural activities. PATRICK’S DAY The Rhode Parish Gathering organised a Balloon Launch of over 700 balloons as a symbol to welcome all our friends and family from all over the world on top of Croghan Hill on St Patrick’s Day. This was a wonderful sight and a treat for all the children as the balloons made their way in the strong breeze at the top of the hill. Fr. Corcoran counted down the launch before the now traditional Mass on top of Croghan Hill and off the flew. After the balloon launch it was down the hill and into Edenderry as the Rhode Parish Gathering also had a float in the Edenderry St Patrick’s Day Parade and then back to the Parish Centre to meet Claire Lynch, the 2012 Melbourne Rose representative at the Rose of Tralee Festival, who came to meet the Gathering Roses as they prepared for The Gathering Rose competition which takes place on Saturday May 4th and Sunday May 5th. The Rhode Parish Gathering committee were delighted and honoured to have Claire come and meet the Roses. Claire is a relative of Kim Murphy, one of the Gathering Rose entrants who represents Posh Wash Laundrette in Rhode. 8 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:18 Page 9 Ryan’s Pharmacy we hope to line up 2,000 people starting from the village and stretching down towards the Parish Hall on the footpath as we hope to create the longest every chain for the song ‘Rock the Boat’ which was a huge hit for Hues Corporation in 1974. ‘Rock the Boat’ was written by Waldo Holmes and later a hit for the Dutch/American singer Forrest Thomas in 1982 when it reached number 4 in the UK charts and was played at weddings and birthday parties all over the world. Now on Friday May 3rd he will perform with Gary Moore and The Gathering Junior Choir. Brendan Keeley is now a singer / songwriter from Tullamore and is probably best known for his huge hit “I’ll always be Lonely” which he first released on his own label in 1995. “I’ll Always be Lonely” stayed in the Irish Charts for a staggering 6 months. His next two singles “Take the Chains Away” and “Heart and Soul” were also huge hits. The same year Brendan released his first Album “I’ll always be Lonely”. Thanks to huge airplay and media attention, “I’ll Always be Lonely” went Platinum in its first week of release. In 2000, Brendan met the amazing French Eurovision Winner “Jacquline Boyer”. We have also got a one hundred year old car for the opening of the Museum. The Museum The idea of a historic museum for the Rhode Parish Gathering weekend was mentioned at an early meeting back in October 2012. Since then the idea has taken off and Gary Moore was asked to form a sub-committee to get things moving. He got a great response when he asked for help. Every Monday evening for the past couple of months Gary, David Duffy, John Jones, Noel Hickey and Liam Quinn met for a couple of hours and discussed how the Museum was going to be set up. Everyone played their part from knocking on doors and asking for old 11 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:18 Page 12 The Croghan Hill Challenge Croghan Hill is situated in the heart of the Irish midlands in Co. CROGHAN HILL VIKING CHALLENGE Viking Theme & World Record: ON the 4th of May 2013 WE ARE GOING BACK IN TIME! At the end of the eighth century the first Viking raiders appeared in Irish waters. It’s an area of our history that has slowly faded into the past but is visible all around us today. Centuries of raids, settlements and battles took place on the very ground we stand. The midland Counties of Ireland are steeped in Viking History. The reason for the Viking Challenge in operation with the Gathering 2013 is to not only revisit this time in history but to invite our friends, relations, the Irish Clans and even our Viking ancestors home to take on the Viking Challenge. Your two challenges will be to: (1) Complete the Croghan Hill Challenge Obstacle Course. (2) Help us set a world record for the biggest gathering of Dressed Vikings that won’t be beaten. Come dressed in Viking (Medieval) attire even if you are spectating, We need as many as possible for the group photo. 12 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:18 Page 13 St. Brigid’s GAA Club St Brigid's GAA Naomh Bríd was founded in 1954 and have won 6 IFC titles in their history. 2006 was a major years reaching the semi final of the Tullamore Court Hotel SFC losing to eventual winners Rhode. Rhode GAA is legendary as once written by Offaly GAA historian John Clarke in an article entitled “Rhode - The Triumphant Enigma” sums up what is the essence of Rhode GAA Club. Rhode GAA have won 25 Senior Football Championships which is a record that no other small rural village in the country could boast. The first in 1900 and the most recent in 2012 sees Rhode’s dominance continue so much that they are now only one title behind the county leaders Tullamore. The history of Offaly football is lavishly adorned with the contributions from Rhode. There were great battles with Rhode and Tullamore in the 1920’s and early 30’s, the razor sharp rivalry with near neighbours Edenderry through the years to the most recent dominance of Offaly football from 1998 – 2012. Rhode’s impact on Gaelic football has not been confined to the domestic scene. Every Offaly success has brought a generous contribution from Rhode and the representation of five of the victorious panel of 71 / 72 was the highest of any club. More success followed through the early 80s with another 4 representing the club in 82 and returned again in 97/98 with Leinster and National Football League wins. Behind every successful club are a handful of dedicated people who receive little credit for their services yet without whom the whole organisation would grind to a halt. In Rhode, we have been fortunate to have had such a dedicated group of club officers over the past 125 years. To all who have served on the committees or helped the club in any way down the years we say a very special Go Raibh Maith Agaibh! On October 8th 2006, Rhode completed their first three- in-a-row of Offaly Senior Football titles since 1929. The following is a brief synopsis of each final. 2004: RHODE 3-12 • GRACEFIELD 1-5 RHODE made amends for missing out on the 2003 Offaly senior football title when they swept aside the challenge of Gracefield at Tullamore on September 5th 2004. They led from start to finish and reached the halfway stage well in control of the game and leading by 1-5 to 0-2. Niall McNamee produced a man of the match performance and finished the game with a personal tally of 2-8 to beat Gerry Hickey’s top county final scoring of 1975 by one point. Gerry scored 1-10 in that final. 2005: RHODE 2-10 • SHAMROCKS 0-13 Pascal Kellaghan wrecked Shamrocks' dream of a first Offaly SFC title with a dramatic injury-time goal for Rhode at Tullamore on September 18th2005. After 58 minutes, Shamrocks levelled for the first time when sub Derek Molloy shot a fine point. But in the first minute of injury time, Kellaghan expertly fielded a high ball delivered by county team-mate Alan McNamee, shrugged off the challenge of Conor Mooney and unleashed a low left-footed shot past another Offaly player, goalkeeper Padraic Kelly. 15 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 Page 16 2006: RHODE 2-6 • CLARA 0-9 IT WAS a day of firsts for the mighty men of Rhode, watched by 5,000 fans at O'Connor Park on October 8th 2006. The club's first three-in-a-row since 1929. Their first minorsenior double since the same year. And it all ended with Alan McNamee becoming the first man to lift the Dowling Cup for the third straight year. The final had been preceded by the official opening by GAA president Nickey Brennan of Tullamore's new 7,000-seater stand, constructed at a cost of €5.7m. OFFALY SENIOR FOOTBALL FINAL 2008 RHODE 1-20 • TULLAMORE 2-4 TWO OF the giants of Offaly football came face to face for only the first time in 54 years on October 5th 2008 and there was no arguing about who went home with the bragging rights. Tullamore may still hold their record 26 county titles but the reigning champions were completely steamrolled by the club who now have 23 and, as captain Roy Malone was keen to point out, picked up their fourth in five years yesterday. Refreshed under new manager and former county star Tom Coffey, Rhode looked right back to their best, with Niall McNamee taking a veritable wrecking ball to the Tullamore defence. Rhode's platform was a rock-solid defence led by Brian Darby, Eoghan Byrne, Shane Sullivan and Paschal Kelleghan dropping selflessly deep. They were totally dominant in midfield where Alan McNamee almost outshone his brother. And of the excellent Darby brothers (sons of Stephen), wing-forward Niall was another serious man of the match contender, scoring 0-6 and central to most of their attacks. But in Niall McNamee they had their trump card. He scored 1-6 from his 1-9 in the second half, including a cool 49th-minute goal. Fr. William Dowling Very Rev. William Dowling came to Rhode for 7 years in 1930 and returned in 1955 as Parish Priest. Fr. Dowling was a keen GAA enthusiast and was Chairman of Rhode GAA Club for many years seeing Rhode winning many county titles that made Rhode a dominant force in Offaly football. His dedication to the game was reflected in his deep concern for the youth of the Parish and the Club’s ground is named after him - Fr. Dowling Park Rhode. The first title in 1900 At the time is was call the King’s County Championship and Rhode defeated Quarrymount in the semi-final on July 21st 1900 to set up a final meeting with neighbours Daingean who were at the time called Cillín. The final was played on September 22nd 1900 and Rhode emerged victorious winning the final by 0-7 to 0-2. Dick Murphy played a captains part that day and other players who also stood out were by Peter and Jim McGlynn. Peter Coyne, Joe Kilmurray, Tom Kelly and Joe Hughes. Second, third and fourth titles followed between 1918 and 1923 but the inevitable three-in-a-row came four years later. Rhode famously recorded their first three-in-a-row from 1927-1929. 16 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 Page 17 TULLAMORE COURT HOTEL OFFALY SFC FINAL 2010 RHODE 3-9, CLARA 2-11 INSPIRED by their prolific captain Niall McNamee who bagged 2-4, Rhode captured their 24th Offaly SFC title and exacted sweet revenge after they overcame reigning champions Clara in front of 6,500 spectators at O’Connor Park, Tullamore on October 10th 2010. The sides were deadlocked on six different occasions in this repeat of the ’09 final which didn’t ignite until the concluding half. Both clubs had only three scorers during a tension filled battle and eight yellow cards were brandished while the new champions didn’t score their first point from play until the 41st minute. Man of the Match McNamee dedicated the victory to the memory of Christy Kellaghan, father of Rhode stalwart Paschal, and as he accepted the Dowling Cup he also paid tribute to Clara full back Joe Quinn who bounced back from a life threatening illness and said he looked forward to seeing him back in the county jersey in 2011. TULLAMORE COURT HOTEL OFFALY SFC FINAL 2012 RHODE 0-16 • CLARA 1-6 Trailing by 1-5 to 0-6 at the break, Rhode dominated the second-half restricting Clara to just one further point while they added ten of their own. With Thomas Deehan in fine form, Clara worked their way in front and were in a strong position to defeat Rhode for the third time in their last four meetings. Deehan scored 1-4 in the first-half while his opposite number Niall McNamee accounted for all but one of Rhode’s scores. Clara had lead by as many as three midway through the half after Deehan’s goal and a subsequent point from John O’Hara. Eoghan Byrne and Niall McNamee reduced the gap for Rhode with points but Deehan was again on the mark before the break to leave the half-time score at 1-5 to 0-6 in Clara’s favour. The second half however was all one way traffic as Rhode took total control to win their 25th title in total and their sixth since 2004. By the midway point of the half they had moved 0-13 to 1-5 clear thanks to points from Anton Sullivan (2), Paul McPadden (2), Niall McNamee, Mark Dunne and Ciaran Heavey and while Clara pulled one back, it would prove to be their final score as Rhode tacked on three more points to claim the win. RHODE REACH 3 LEINSTER CLUB FINALS IN 4 YEARS 2006 - 2010 Rhode have contested 3 Leinster finals coming, unfortunately out at the wrong end of fascinating encounters on all 3 occasions. Their best chance for glory was in 2008 against Kilmacud Crokes when we had a good half time lead but two soft goals in the second period saw out chances fall through our hands. Our latest venture in 2012 was a short one with an early exit to St Pats of Louth with a superior physical presence on a damp day in Tullamore. The “Quest” goes on and if the success of our local School team is anything to go by we will be successful in the near future. Brothers Conor and Ruairi McNamee were successful in 2011 with St Mary’s Edenderry in the All-Ireland Colleges championship, with Conor McNamee being the first Rhode man to raise a Cup in Croke Park. Philip Foy from Clonmore Harps was also on that winning team. 17 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 Page 18 AIB LEINSTER CLUB SENIOR FOOTBALL FINAL 2006 3rd December - Moorefield (KE) (3-6) Rhode (OY) (0-8) AIB LEINSTER G.A.A. We’re excited to present our playground and look forward to sharing the Gathering experience with our community and visitors. 18 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 Page 19 Rhode – the greatest story ever told 1955 County Champions Back, from left: Peter Leavy, Brendan Hoey, Fay Eustace, Peter Jones, Mick Casey, Paddy Kerrigan, Tom Murphy, Billy McCabe, Eamon Rigney, Paddy Casey, Greg Ennis. Front: Johnny Owens, Mick Kerrigan, Chris Jones, Tony Delaney, Joe Murphy, Rev. Fr. Dowling, Jim Foy, Dermot O’Mara, Eamon Lenihan, Willie Leonard, Ned Eustace. The “Butcher” is also in the picture. After the 1954 final defeat to Tullamore, Rhode faced Gracefield in the first round of the 1955 championship. Lining out without Paddy Casey and Johnny Owens the veteran Billy ‘Spot’ Leonard was included in the team. Gracefield who were then St Patrick’s then started well but Rhode managed to hold on to win 1-6 to 0-5 and set up a meeting with the reds of Edenderry. Edenderry were strong opposition with no fewer than 13 players on the starting 15 that represented the county at one time or the other. Rhode’s preparation for this game was far from good with poor attendance at training and practice matches but when Sunday August 7th came round the men from Rhode were up to the task. At half time the village led 1-3 to 0-2 with Mick Casey, Johnny Owens, Peter Leavy and Tommy Murphy being consistent pillars in the edifice of Rhode football for many years once again these 4 veterans were producing a magnificent performances as Rhode marched to victory on a scoreline of 1-5 to 1-2. This put Rhode back into the final for another meeting with Daingean on Sunday August 28th. Rhode were looking for title number 13. Rhode trailed at the break by 5 points 1-4 to 0-2 and things got worse as 18 minutes into the second half Rhode were 9 points adrift and staring defeat in the face, but this began the most dramatic comeback in the history of county finals. Paddy Casey now operating at full-forward, punched a long range free from his brother Mick into the Daingean net and suddenly Rhode began to believe. Moses Murphy and Fay Eustace swapped positions from goal-keeper to left half-back and Rhode started to dominate possession. Points from Mick Kerrigan and Mick Casey followed by a goal from Peter Leavy left just the minimum between the two teams as up stepped Mick Casey to tower over an effort 19 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 Page 20 from 50 yards to bring the sides level with minutes left on the clock. Some Daingean supporters had the game left early to begin celebrations but as the clock ticked down Rhode were awarded a 40 metre free which Mick Kerrigan was entrusted to take. “Over the bar with it Mick” shouted one enthusiastic official to which Mick politely replied “What do you think I’m going to do” as he coolly stepped up and put it between the uprights. Delight once again for Rhode and title number 13 safely secured. The First Title of the Sixties Back, left to right: Tom Ward, Liam Swaine, Mick Casey, Bill Heavey, Sean Malone, Joe Hannon, Pat Kilmurray, Patsy Murphy, Jody Gunning, Paddy Kerrigan. Front: Jimmy Byrne, Sean Murphy, Eugene Mulligan, Paddy McCormack (Capt.), Brendan O’Toole, Martin Heavey and Pat Swaine. Rhode added their fourteenth title in 58 and in 1966 secured title number 15 with a thriller. In 1966 Offaly County Board struck a special medal to commemorate the Easter Rising 50 years earlier. Rhode defeated North Offaly in the first round. The led by 4 at the break with the ironman Paddy McCormack and Sean Malone playing well in the middle went on to win 1-8 to 0-2 to set up a meeting with Gracefield. Gracefield were a fancied outfit and goals from Sean ‘Spud’ Murphy sent Rhode through. The semi-final against Tullamore was a close affair with Rhode edging it 1-9 to 1-6. Bill Heavey, Brendan O’Toole and Patsy Murphy capped great performances. The final was against Clara and Rhode’s chance to avenge defeat of two years previous. This game had it all, played in front of 3,073 supporters who got great value for money. Sean Murphy opened the scoring after 30 seconds with the game played at a tenacious pace. Points from Martin Heavey, Sean Malone, Pat Swaine and Jody Gunning were added to leave the score Rhode 0-7 Clara 1-4 at the break. Clara edged ahead in the second half as the fever pitch final continued to be played on a knife edge. Entering the final 10 minutes Rhode pressed forward and the half back line of Eugene Mulligan, Paddy McCormack and Martin Heavey moved up to aid the midfield. The iron man began to dominate the play and equalised with a 30 yard free. The iron man 20 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 Page 21 The iron man was everywhere and a solo effort in the 25th minute pushed the village ahead. Clara had given it their all but Rhode’s strength in depth was powerful as title number 15 was secured. Rhode retained the title in 1967 and for the 5th time in history they played and beat Daingean in the final 1-7 to 0-7 with Jody Gunning, JJ Grehan, Paddy McCormack and Frank Higgins all contributing to the scoring tally of 1-7. Defeat in 68 stopped a second three in a row but 1969 brought title number 17. Due to Offaly reaching the All-Ireland Final in 1969 the domestic final was not played till June 7th 1970. Rhode played Erin Rovers in the final that day and were lucky in the end to live and fight another day. The replay was fixed for O’Connor Park on June 21st. Rhode had to play with Paddy McCormack and got off to the worst possible start conceding an early goal and point. Jody Gunning settle Rhode down in the 7th minute with a free. Rhode goalie John Kavanagh had to pull off a major save to deny Rovers a second goal chance and this was the tonic Rhode required. Gunning set up Carthage Grennan who blasted to the back of the net. With Eugene Mulligan outstanding for Rhode added points through Sean Malone, Gunning and Grennan, while in between Seamus Darby goaled. Rhode led 2-7 to 1-3 at the break and had the aid of the breeze in the second half, however despite being comfortably ahead Erin Rovers began an amazing comeback with their forwards laying siege on the Rhode goal mouth but Eugene Mulligan was outstanding and Rhode held on to win 2-10 to 2-8. Title number 18 came in 1975 as Rhode continued their marvellous record of winning at least one championship in every decade. Again for the sixth time in the history Rhode and Daingean were set to meet in the decider. Daingean this time emerged as favourites after defeating Ferbane 1-17 to 2-8 in the semi final, but on final day as was the previous 5 occasions Rhode had the sharper edge and were more methodical with Tom Darcy and Joe Mullgan holding the advantage in the middle of the park. Playing well Rhode raced into a four point lead Gerry Hickey who eventually scored 1-10 that day clinical in front of goal. Daingean replied with a goal from Con Nolan. Tom Darcy added a point to restore Rhode’s dominance and Gerry Hickey continued to score for sport. Jody Gunning collected a good pass from Stephen Darby and beat his man before passing the perfect ball to Hickey who grabbed it, side footed his man and drove the ball to the back of the net to give Rhode a 1-7 to 1-3 lead at the break. Rhode stretched their lead in the second half to 6 and appeared to be coasting but when Sean McCann was fouled inside the parallelogram Mick Spain pointed to the spot and Daingean had a lifeline. Up stepped Mick Wright, noted for his strong kick, but could only watch in despair as a brilliant save from Rhode keeper Noel Slevin marched Rhode to the 18th SFC title on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-7. Gerry Hickey that day set a record scoring 1-10 in that final which was not beaten for almost 3 decades until Niall McNamee beat it in 2004 scoring 2-8 against Gracefield. The 80s was the only decade that Rhode failed to win the SFC title. Walsh Island and then Ferbane were the dominant forces. Walsh Island beat Rhode in the decider in 1982 by 0-11 to 0-9 and 7 years later Ferbane inflicted defeat on Rhode too 3-14 to 21 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 Page 22 to 1-9. It was another 9 years before Rhode reached a final and 23 years since title number 18 had been secured. Rhode were looking like going through a second decade without a title but in 98 the Dowling Cup came home to Rhode and title number 19 was finally won. Rhode defeated Edenderry in the final 0-11 to 1-4 to bring glorious scenes to the village. OFFALY SFC FINAL 1998 Rhode 0-11 Edenderry 1-4 Rampant Rhode brought 23 years of frustration to an end at Tullamore on Sunday October 4th 1998 when they dethroned reigning champions Edenderry to win their first Offaly senior football title since 1975. And they did it in style, completely outclassing an Edenderry side who were contesting their third final in four years. Indeed, Edenderry were flattered to be just four points behind at the finish, as it was only a late goal from a penalty that enabled them to improve on their meagre total. Barry Malone, who had been a doubtful starter for Rhode was declared fit to line out at midfield and despite missing two weeks training, he had a fine game and his partnership with Fergal Dunne gave Rhode control in an area which Edenderry had been expected to dominate. Rhode defended magnificently in winning the title for the 19th time, with wing backs Richie Harnett and Joe Kilmurray proving particularly effective in curbing Edenderry's perceived dangermen Cillian Farrell and Sean Óg Farrell who failed to raise a flag between them. Further back, brothers Alan and Ken Kelleghan, together with Padraig Dunne, formed a solid full back line which Edenderry were unable to breakdown. Rhode captain Pat Daly had a very rewarding hour, and although six of his seven points were scored from frees, his running off the ball was excellent. Edenderry got the first score when Peter Brady pointed a free in the first minute, but that was as good as it got for them and they trailed by 0-7 to 0-3 at half time despite playing with the wind in the first half. In the second half Rhode increased their lead to seven points despite missing a penalty when Pat Daly’s spot kick was saved by Donal Seery. Edenderry failed to score for 22 minutes of the second half, but with five minutes remaining, they grabbed the only goal of the game when Kevin Guing scored from a penalty awarded when Tony Kenny’s free was handled on the ground by a defender inside the area. Roy also captained Rhode to success in 2008 while Paschal captained Rhode in 2003 and 2009. 22 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 RHODE SENIOR FOOTBALL FINAL APPEARANCES Year Winner 1900 1918 1920 1923 1927 1928 1929 1930 1931 1932 1935 1937 1939 1940 1944 1945 1946 1949 1950 1953 1954 1955 1958 1964 1966 1967 1969 1975 1978 1979 1982 1989 1998 1999 2001 2003 2004 2005 2006 2008 2009 2010 2012 Rhode Rhode Rhode Rhode Rhode Rhode Rhode Tullamore Rhode Tullamore Tullamore Walsh Island Rhode Rhode Rhode Cloghan Tullamore Rhode St Mary’s Edenderry Tullamore Rhode Rhode Clara Rhode Rhode Rhode Rhode Walsh Island Walsh Island Walsh Island Ferbane Rhode Edenderry Edenderry Clara Rhode Rhode Rhode Rhode Clara Rhode Rhode Runner-up 0-7 4-7 0-4 2-7 4-1 2-4 3-6 1-6 1-4 4-0 2-3 3-8 2-4 1-5 2-5 1-6 2-6 w/o 2-7 1-8 3-7 2-6 2-10 1-10 0-11 1-7 2-10 1-12 0-13 0-10 0-11 3-14 0-11 2-9 1-9 1-9 3-12 2-10 2-6 1-20 2-7 3-9 0-15 Daingean Cloghan Ferbane Clara Ferbane Tullamore Daingean Rhode Tullamore Rhode Rhode Rhode Daingean Walsh Island Tullamore Rhode Rhode Cloghan Rhode Rhode Rhode Daingean Clara Rhode Clara Daingean Erin Rovers Daingean Rhode Rhode Rhode Rhode Edenderry Rhode Rhode Rhode Gracefield Shamrocks Clara Tullamore Rhode Clara Clara 23 0-2 1-0 1-0 1-1 2-2 2-3 2-4 0-2 1-3 1-2 0-6 2-5 1-6 0-4 1-5 1-2 2-4 scr 1-5 1-5 2-2 2-5 2-5 1-7 1-7 0-7 2-8 1-7 1-8 0-8 0-9 1-9 1-4 0-13 1-6 1-7 1-5 0-13 0-9 2-4 1-9 2-11 1-6 Page 23 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 Page 24 Best of luck to Rhode Parish Gathering from all at O’TOOLE’S RHODE FRIDAY 3rd MAY Barbecue from 3.30pm. Major projects have included the construction of many of Ireland’s power plants, large scale transportation solutions and the introduction of the most up to date medical imaging systems to Ireland’s hospitals. 1963: Siemens builds the world’s largest peat-fired power station in Rhode, County Offaly. Something for Rhode ESB to be proud of. Indeed along with that 40 megawatt unit two other 20 megawatt units also operated in Rhode Generating station as the station often boasted excellent efficiency and availability. Rhode ESB opened in 1958 with the first two sets producing 40 megawatts at full output. Rhode ESB for many years consistantly kept in with the national grid with the 60 megawatt output and indeed until the safety incident on set 3 in 2001 the station could have remained producing for a further year or two. In 1993 a special open week in September marked the 30th anniversary of Rhode’s set 3 siemens turbine with the visit of then minister for energy Brian Cowen to mark the official opening. There were many great years for Rhode ESB for the staff, contractors, Bord na Mona, local business and indeed for the wider part of north Offaly, South Westmeath and in latter times west Kildare, North Laois following the closures of Portarlington and Allenwood. Rhode ESB will live long in history for those who knew it and almost every family in the parish had some direct link to the wonderful iconic building that once stood there. Sadly in 2003 the end came and ten years on since the towers came down we celebrate once again the legacy that once was Rhode ESB Generating Station. 29 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 Page 30 KILLEEN’S Bar & Lounge, Rhode FRIDAY 3rd MAY Macra Na Feirme Reunion, Elvis style, music by the King himself SATURDAY 4th MAY Take Your Pick - Jackpot €500.00. Unfortunately, the Club despanded shortly afterwards in 1921 and reformed in the early 1940’s for a brief period of four years. After a long hard battle the Club was reformed in 1988, and has been going strong since. After the reformation Clonmore won their first Junior B Offaly Championship in 1992. On that day Clonmore defeated Drumcullen by 1 -08 to 1-04 in Killurin on 6th December 1992. The team on that day consisted of: Darren Bermingham, Pauric McNamee, Thomas McNamee, David Bannon, Kenneth Glennon, Ambrose Mooney, Fergus Mooney, Richard McNamee, Wayne Mooney, Robert Cole, Kieran McNamee (RIP), Ger Sullivan, Seamus McNamee, Pauric Dunne, JP McNamee, David McNamee, Declan Foy, Keith Dunne, Enda Foy, Micheal Leech, Jason Bannon. Mascots on that day were: Theo Foy and John Dunne. Manager was Paul McNamee. Clonmore then proceeded to Junior A and only stayed at Junior a for three years, returning to junior b football in 1995, they proceeded then to stay in Junior B from 1995-2008, when in 2008 they were successful in another Junior B Championship under Manager Declan Carroll. On that day Clonmore defeated Durrow in O’Connor Park. Again the proceeded up to Junior A and won a Junior A title in 2010 defeating shamrocks in Geashill under Manager Gerry Feery and which seen the Club moved to Intermediate. We remained at Intermediate level only for a short period returning to Junior A in 2012, where we remain at present. 2012 was another successful year for Clonmore, with the lads winning the Division 3 League Final and are now playing in Division 2 League Football. Also in September 2012, Clonmore were successful in winning the All-Ireland Shield in St. Jude of Portmarmack, this was the lads second chance having been there in 2011, and reaching the semi final, but were unlucky on the day. The Club has been going from strength to strength and the current manager is Gordan Kerrigan who is doing an outstanding job and extremely dedicated. In 2012 Clonmore made history by fielding the first ever Ladies Football team who are present competing at Junior level football in Offaly. The ladies are managed by three of our footballers Willie McNamee, Enda Foy and John Dunne who give huge time and dedication. 31 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:19 Page 32 Clonmore Harps Junior A Champions Back Row, Left to Right: Selector Pauric McNamee, Willie McNamee, Frank Heavey, John Dunne, Micheal Murphy, Wesley Slevin, Adrain Foy, Jack Foy, Philip Foy, Darren Connell, Theo Foy, Jamie Leavy, Sean Marshall, Tom Moran, John Foy, Stephen Foy, Josh Cahill, Sean Ludlow, Manager Gerry Feery & Nicole Feery. Since then we have taken home six county titles, the latest been in 2011, and thirteen underage titles. The Club also reached the 2012 County Final only to be defeated by St Rynagh’s who won their first title Last year Rhode Ladies decided to undertake a major fundraising drive in association with the local charity, Irish Autism Action in supporting the 100k for 100k project and used our network of members, players and friends for the betterment of our community. This project raised substantial revenue for the charity and brought a great sense of togetherness within our community something that Rhode Ladies GAA Club are very proud of. Rhode ladies led by Evelyn Malone, Chrissie Maguire and Jan Byrne are constantly looking for more girls to take up the game of football and new initiatives like Gaelic for girls and mothers are very welcome. More parents are also welcome to get involved as Rhode Ladies look to continue the great legacy it has over the past 15 years. Clonmore 88 supporting Autism The Clonmore 88 is a celebration of 25 years since Clonmore Harps GAA was reformed in 1988 and the GAA Club are looking to help the charity Irish Autism Action as once again local man Niall Murphy will do a long distance run on Monday, May 6th in Clonmore. Niall will run the beautiful scenic Clonmore 12km run seven times and finish in his village Rhode to complete his 88km run to support autism. Recent Autism prevalence study shows that 1 in 88 are affected by Autism which has combined the title of the challenge Clonmore 88 supporting Autism. People can run, jog, or walk with Niall over the course of the day as he commences his run at 8:30am from Clonmore Harps GAA grounds with the main run / race taking place at 3pm. Niall hopes to finish in Rhode village at around 5:30pm and each 12km lap will be approx. 1 hour 15 minutes pace. Hundreds of people lined the street and hundreds joined the forty year old as he completed the ‘100km for €100k for Autism’ on Offaly roads, starting at 8am as the frost cleared, and finishing after 7pm, as the evening sun went down. The Community of Rhode show their emotion for Niall as he crosses the line after completing 100KM (62 miles) to raise funds for Autism. But a delighted Niall took no credit for his incredible feat, preferring instead to heap praise on his community. Niall said “The support for this event has been overwhelming, the village of Rhode and surrounding areas have come out in force to help raise funds for a charity that is close to my heart”. Niall was indebted to everybody who took part at so many different stages throughout the day, some people even doing two, three and four laps of the course. Approximately 1,000 did the 10K lap over the course of the day as the people then gathered to the finish line to see Niall finish at 19.10pm a total of 10hrs 55minutes after beginning at Rhode GAA pitch at 8.15am that morning. There were great scenes of elation and joy as Niall had finally completed his challenge. A final total of just over €91,000 was raised as a result of April 1st 2012. A staggering amount raised, for a small, but very big hearted community. Keith Duffy, Patron of Irish Autism Action, also came down that day and he expressed his sincere thanks on behalf of Irish Autism Action to the many people who supported the event and helped raise a lot of awareness for the charity. 38 Rhode Parish Gathering Programme AM:Layout 1 18/04/2013 14:20 Page 39 Seamus Foy & Sons Building Contractors CLONMORE, FAHY, RHODE, CO.
