February 2016 NEXT MEETING TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 6:30 PM AT AZALEA PARK REC CENTER WE A L L C O UNT 2016 A nnual H omele ss Census Thanks to the thirty-one individuals who showed up at Grace Church at 5:30AM on Friday, January 29, for the Regional Task Force on Homeless for the annual We All Count event and the eight Mid-City SDPD officers who accompanied us. San Diego Canyonlands, Ocean Discovery Institute, Park and Rec Open Space Rangers, Mayor Faulconer’s Rep, Veterans Community Services, neighbors and even some volunteers from outside City Heights gathered to count homeless in our canyons and creek areas. This group divided into five teams and covered Manzanita, Swan, Hollywood/Pepper and Olivia (47th St.) Canyons and Chollas Creek. This is an important event as the numbers will be used to apply for Federal funding to help San Diego with this growing Special thanks to Pastor James for making Grace Church available and to Burly and the Bean’s Justin Boone for providing coffee and pastries. crisis. THANKS KEILLER LEADERSHIP ACADEMY On January 15, our long-time neighbor, Mr. Chavez, brought 25 middle school students and two teachers by City bus to Manzanita Canyon from Keiller Leadership Academy, where Mr. Chavez is a counselor, to help San Diego Canyonlands staffers Freddy Arthur and Linda Pennington remove a pickup full of litter and debris washed in by the December storm. They were originally scheduled to help us on November 21 but we had to cancel that event because of the imminent rain storm. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to all of our volunteers who help us restore and maintain City Heights wilderness areas. These young people and their mentors clearly enjoyed being in the canyon and helping with our environment. Feel free to explore the canyon and see the good work of the Friends of Olivia/47th St. Canyon and all the canyon partners. Parts of it are quite remote so take a buddy with you and be safe. The Friends group meets every third Saturday to work in Olivia Canyon. This section of the canyon was once clogged with 16 foot high Arundo donax (giant reed). Now it is a great place to hike or take a nature walk.
