JUNETEENTH COMMITTEE
PO BOX 84112
AUSTIN, TEXAS 78708-1142
(512)413-5681
Dear,
Helping one child can make all the difference for our families, schools and
community. Helping one child means helping her understand her heritage, family
values and her special place in the world. Helping one child means encouraging
him to realize his dreams, whether it is sports, science, the arts or even
becoming President of the U.S.
When you help one child, you demonstrate your belief in her, and she, in turn,
will believe in herself. When you help one child, you help many others. Your
donation towards the 2009 Juneteenth Celebration will not only help honor the freedom, courage and
diversity among the African-American community, but you will also support the efforts of the Greater East
Austin Youth Association (GEAYA).
GEAYA, a 501c3 nonprofit, volunteer organization, provides quality programs for more than 500 boys and girls
in year-round sports every year. Through their involvement, these children gain a strong sense of values and
teamwork. The GEAYA provides a safe and fun environment, while allowing participation in a competitive
space. The impact your donation can make on one child will reverberate throughout the community for years
to come.
“When I am at the park practicing football I feel that it is okay for me to be myself. Greater East Austin is
awesome because no one is treated differently.
Enclosed is your 2009 Sponsorship packet and application. You can also take a step further and
become a part of our “Family of Donors Circles.” The full details of these sponsor opportunities
are included, but we welcome the chance to meet with you to discuss these partnerships.
Please help us secure the future—and dreams—of our children.
Thank you in advance for your time. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at 512.413.5681 with any questions.
Sincerely,
TJ Carter

Support the 2009 Juneteenth Celebration and You Support a Child’s Dream
through Donations to the Greater East Austin Youth Association (GEAYA).
"GEAYA played an influential role during my childhood. My family
could not afford to pay for extra activities, but GEAYA allowed me to
participate anyway. GEAYA, along with P.A.R.D. Recreation Centers
became the community that raised me. The coaches and volunteers
provided an open environment where I felt comfortable being myself.
They gave me direction, correction and tough love when I needed it.
Because GEAYA played such a major part in my life, I began
volunteering with the organization, so that I may turn around and
become the community for the youth of East Austin.” Tonia, Admin
Asst II
“I love Greater East Austin, because when I meet new people, we
always become close friends. Also because it is a place where you can
just feel comfortable, and feel free to just be yourself… nobody gets
treated differently because of the color of their skin….” Terrence
“I like the community because it is cool…and the gym always supplies
you with anything you need like a football…and basketball….” Xavier,
age 10, Warriors
A Celebration of Freedom,
Courage, Diversity and American
History
Also known as “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day,” this annual event, June 19, commemorates the
announcement among Texas African-Americans that slavery had been abolished. It is an official holiday in 29
states in the nation, but originated in Galveston, Texas.
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on Sept. 22, 1862 and took effect
early that following year:
“That on the 1st day of January, A.D., 1863, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a
State the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, and
forever free….” President Abraham Lincoln and William H. Seward, Secretary of State
Austin’s GEAYA Juneteenth Celebration, now in its 12th year, combines history, fun and healthy competition
for the whole family through a week-long calendar of music, games, dances, food drive, parade and Run/Walk,
plus the popular Miss and Little Miss Juneteenth Pageant.
Proceeds from the 2009 Juneteenth Celebration will help support the Greater East Austin Youth Association
(www.geaya.net), so please give generously.
